Vietnam will showcase locally made weapons at an international arms fair in Hanoi on Thursday, as it seeks to boost its domestic industry and possibly export military equipment.

Among the nearly 250 exhibitors will be top defence companies, including from the United States, Europe, Turkey and countries at war with each other, such as Israel, Iran, Russia and Ukraine.

The Southeast Asian nation is a major importer of weapons, especially from Russia, having invested for years in its defence capabilities in an unstable region where it has clashed with China over boundaries in the South China Sea.

But recently it has also bolstered its domestic defence industry and promoting exports of military products is now a priority, defence ministry officials have repeatedly said.

State-owned defence firm Viettel and other local companies will showcase missile defence systems, drones, air defence radars, armoured vehicles and artillery, according to defence ministry media.

Some of these weapons will be displayed for the first time, said Nguyen The Phuong, an expert on Vietnam security at Australia’s University of New South Wales.

He noted a key strategy to strengthen the local industry had been the signing of deals with foreign arms exporters to have some of their components produced in Vietnam.

Talks with South Korean companies were underway for possible new deals under those conditions, especially for artillery and aviation, he said.

Similar talks had also been held with companies from other countries, including the Czech Republic, officials said.

RIVALS’ GEAR ON DISPLAY

At the expo, Iran’s defence ministry will have an entire pavilion, not far from the booths of Israel’s defence firms Israel Aerospace Industries (ISRAI.UL) and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

The fair will also host a dozen booths of Russian firms and one for Ukraine’s Motor Sich (MSICH.PFT) an aircraft engine manufacturer.

A dozen Turkish defence companies, including Aselsan (ASELS.IS) Turkish Aerospace Industries and Roketsan, are among listed participants, making Turkey’s one of the largest delegations.

China’s Norinco will be one of two Chinese exhibitors, in a first for a Vietnamese defence fair.

U.S. defence giants Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) Boeing (BA.N) and Textron Aviation Defense (TXT.N) will also have their booths at the fair.

They have all been involved in talks with Vietnamese authorities for the sale of helicopters. Lockheed is also discussing a possible deal on C-130 Hercules military transport planes, sources had told Reuters.

Brazil’s Embraer (EMBR3.SA) said it will exhibit its C-390 Millennium plane – a rival to the C-130.

Top European defence firms will also attend, including aerospace giant Airbus (AIR.PA), Britain’s BAE Systems (BAES.L) Germany’s Rheinmetall (RHMG.DE), Italy’s Leonardo (LDOF.MI) and France’s Thales Group (TCFP.PA). (Source: Reuters)

Government sets out a range of major initiatives set out to boost security at home and around the world

The UK and Australia will reinforce their economic and defence partnership and bolster co-operation on shared global challenges at an annual ministerial meeting – known as AUKMIN – today (16th December).

The Foreign Secretary and the Defence Secretary will host Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles in London. They will discuss cooperation on issues including Ukraine, the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific. They are expected to announce a series of major initiatives:

The deployment of the UK Carrier Strike Group to Australia in 2025
Extended Australian support for training Ukrainian Armed Forces
New submarine programme office in Bristol

In a turbulent world, the UK-Australia friendship matters even more. Both countries must work together on shared security in Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic, boosting our security at home and abroad.

Foreign Secretary, David Lammy said: “The UK and Australia have a long and enduring friendship underpinned by close trade ties that are benefiting Brits and Aussies alike. The growth mission is the central mission of the government. We want to go further to deepen our cooperation with countries like Australia to boost economic growth, build supply chain resilience and transition to net zero. Together, we are modernising our partnership, working to tackle the biggest challenges around the world and furthering our co-operation on defence, security and foreign policy matters.”

Defence Secretary, John Healey said: “Our unique and historic partnership with Australia is more important than ever in the face of increasing global threats. Today’s announcements demonstrate how our two nations, working in lockstep, can help drive jobs and growth while reinforcing our collective security. Through our joint support to Ukraine, AUKUS partnership and high-end military exercises, we are proving the value of cooperation in delivering security and prosperity in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific.”

A key pillar of AUKMIN is cooperation with Australia on defence, working together to make the UK and Australia more secure. The UK is committed to AUKUS, our defence and security partnership with Australia, and the US, and the jobs and growth it can deliver for Britain. AUKUS will transform UK-Australia defence industrial cooperation. The Ministers are determined to make it the floor, not the ceiling, of the security partnership, using it to ensure strategic stability as well as driving growth and jobs.

The AUKUS submarine programme is set to generate 7,000 additional British jobs and at its peak, there will be over 21,000 people working on the SSN-AUKUS programmes in the UK supply chain. This will support the government’s plan to kickstart economic growth, and drive forward economic stability and investment.

Today, Ministers will announce the creation of a new office in Bristol – ‘Programme Interface Office’ – to coordinate and integrate the UK and Australian AUKUS programmes and supply chains. Through the growth mission, the government is restoring economic stability, increasing investment and reforming the economy to drive up prosperity and living standards across the UK.

The UK and Australia are also developing strategic undersea warfare cooperation. Australia will equip its Hunter Class frigates with Thales’ world-leading 2087 sonar. This will see both the UK and Australia working together to develop underwater capability and share information. This will contribute around £45 m to the UK economy, supporting economic growth.

The UK Carrier Strike Group will also sail to Australia in 2025, in a further demonstration of the UK’s commitment Indo-Pacific security. HMS Prince of Wales will be the first Queen Elizabeth-class carrier to conduct a port visit to Australia. She will also participate in Exercise Talisman Sabre, a multinational exercise hosted by Australia involving nineteen nations.

Together, the UK and Australia are putting pressure on countries around the world to deter military cooperation with Russia. This includes the deployment of troops by North Korea to Russia and their supply of munitions, arms and other materiel. Both countries recognise Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic security are indivisible. As one of the biggest financial supporters of Ukraine, the UK is pleased Australia will extend their training contribution to Operation Interflex to the end of 2025. The UK-led training scheme has now prepared more than 50,000 Ukrainian recruits for combat.

The UK supports Australia’s bid to host COP31 in partnership with the Pacific with climate change being one of the most pressing challenges of our time. This Government is committed to making Britain a clean energy super-power, and Australia shares the same ambition to lead the world on clean energy. Both the UK and Australia will commit to further enhanced co-operation to ensure climate finance reaches those on the frontline of the climate crisis, particularly Pacific Island Countries.

Australia recently joined the Global Clean Power Alliance Finance Mission, which will help to unlock clean energy finance at scale. At CHOGM, the Prime Minister and Prime Minister Albanese agreed to a new UK-Australia Climate and Energy Partnership, which will focus on the accelerated deployment of renewable energy technologies, such as green hydrogen and offshore wind, to support the economic resilience and decarbonisation goals of both countries.

AUKMIN is a set-piece meeting which has taken place since 2006. It is an important moment for the UK and Australia in agreeing collaboration in defence, security and foreign policy matters. It is also an opportunity to highlight joint work in maintaining geo-political stability, which is key to underpinning growth and prosperity in the UK and beyond, including through the joint work between both countries’ defence industries.
During AUKMIN, the UK and Australia will commit to a consolidated hydrography partnership which will include greater cooperation to improve Pacific Islands hydrography capability, including launching a programme funded by FCDO which will see a new Hydrography Leaders Programme for the South West Pacific and a UKHO secondee to Fiji. 12 Dec 24. Business Secretary to meet defence CEOs and encourages investors to see defence as a core engine of growth.

Roundtable forms key part of Government’s pro-growth approach and Plan for Change.

Today (12 December), the Business Secretary and Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry will hear from the defence industry hosting a CEO roundtable on driving investment into the sector. It will focus on navigating environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles and how they can pose challenges to growth and attracting investment.

We are delivering on our Plan for Change by driving investment and reform to deliver growth. Today’s roundtable will discuss how to realise the economic potential of the defence sector, and changing perceptions of it among investors – which is essential to kickstarting economic growth and provide greater investment across the UK.

Today’s roundtable will bring together CEOs from some of the UK’s most prominent defence companies, as well as trade associations for the UK’s defence, financial services and manufacturing sectors, with reps from major UK investment banks. This comes just a week after the Defence Secretary launched the Government’s Defence Industrial Strategy – by inviting investors, innovators, industry and trade unions to give their views on how to grow a better, more integrated, more innovative and more resilient defence sector.

It forms a key part of the Business Secretary’s commitment to a ‘pro-growth, pro-business’ approach, and working together with industry to unlock investment into the UK’s key growth sectors and create high-quality jobs.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: “Our world-leading defence sector is vital to the economy, supporting thousands of high-skilled, high-paid jobs across the UK. With our Industrial Strategy we’re taking the pro-business, pro-growth approach the sector needs to drive investment in every part of the country. 10 Dec 24. Motshekga commits to defence industry lekgotla this financial year. Senior defence leadership, including Minister Angie Motshekga, met SA defence industry leaders in Centurion in August. More than two years on since a much-touted South African defence industry (SADI) lekgotla was scheduled and then postponed, it now appears the long-awaited gathering will take place before 31 March 2025. Replying to one of the final Parliamentary questions before Parliament prorogued for the year, Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga used information supplied by Acting Secretary for Defence (SecDef) Thobekile Gamede to answer a Democratic Alliance (DA) National Council of Province (NCOP) Member of Parliament (MP). Dennis Ryder was informed the original SADI lekgotla dates could not be adhered to. This was because of an assessment by Motshekga’s predecessor Thandi Modise. The postponement is put down to two factors – the non-availability of “critical stakeholders” and “factors beyond the stakeholder’s control”. On the credit side of the ledger, Gamede noted Motshekga “visited the defence industry and held engagement with their executives on 30 August” with “a promise” to schedule a defence industry indaba before the end of the 2024/25 financial year. The defence industry call was part of a familiarisation tour of the SA National Defence Force (SANDF), its four services as well as the Department of Military Veterans (DMV), Defence Force Service Council (DFSC) and Armscor. Motshekga and her deputies – Richard Hlophe and Bantu Holomisa – met SADI representatives at Saab Grintek Defence in Centurion’s Highveld Techno Park. In addition to being briefed by Sandile Ndlovu, SA Aerospace, Maritime and Defence Industries Association (AMD) Executive Director and Chairperson, the ministerial party interacted with AMD and SADI members including Sandock Austral Executive Chairman, Dr Mthobisi Zondi. 04 Dec 24. Beyond the controller: Strategic Command’s Defence esports and digital skills event. Following the successful digital skills event in March, Strategic Command hosted a further event in London, underscoring the importance of digital in Defence. As the global threats and vulnerabilities we face evolve and increase in an ever-contested world, Defence must adapt to ensure that our skills and technology continue to maintain our competitive edge against our adversaries.

Our esports and digital skills event showcased how gaming and immersive technologies are shaping the future of Defence. How these tools can help to develop crucial skills in strategic thinking, dexterity, data management, and coding – skills our modern Defence force needs.

At the event Lieutenant General Tom Copinger-Symes said:

It’s been amazing to witness the energy and enthusiasm at this event. People are quickly grasping how esports can change our perspectives and enhance our skills, whilst having a lot of fun. Whether it’s strategic thinking, rapid decision-making, fine motor skills, coding and designing, or teamwork, there’s direct application to the military and how we achieve deliver our purpose.

But it’s more than skills – esports allows us to bring together people from across the Services, the civil service, other government departments and industry, to build a strong and engaged ‘One Defence’ team. And we can use it to engage our international allies and partners too. We know that we’re stronger together and esports can help.

Taking a whole force approach, the event brought together military personnel and civil servants to experience activities that highlighted how esports and digital platforms can provide a critical form of training and skills development.

The event offered everyone a chance to get hands-on experiences with innovative technologies, including, virtual reality and augmented reality training platforms. From Royal Navy boat simulators testing maritime operational skills, to RAF fighter jet simulators challenging pilot decision-making, and strategy games tested planning and risk management. All showcasing how digital technologies and esports can develop critical thinking, rapid decision-making, and the ability to navigate complex scenarios – vital skills to all operations.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Veterans and People, Alastair Carns, further outlined the importance of digital in Defence, and how esports can help attract, develop, and retain top cyber and digital talent. Highlighting how our personnel must now be as adept with code and cybersecurity as they are with traditional combative skills. From drone operations to data analysis, the modern defence force needs agile minds that can navigate both physical and digital battlegrounds.

Technology partnerships are helping to drive this transformation forward. Industry leaders like Microsoft and Activision, both of whom were present at the event, are working with Defence to enhance our digital skills. By embracing esports and innovative learning technologies, we’re building a workforce that can think, adapt, and operate across both virtual and physical domains.

We are increasingly working in a digital and tech-enabled environment, and with the cyber frontline facing daily threats, digital skills are vital for everyone in Defence. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine exemplifies how a digitally enabled force can effectively resist a larger adversary, with their rapid mastery of drones illustrating how the speed of innovation is key to gaining the upper hand in a digital age. 06 Dec 24. The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) confirmed the speakers set to address the IISS Manama Dialogue 2024, the Middle East’s premier security summit.

In its 20th year, the Dialogue will be celebrated with the Opening Address from Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bahrain. This will be delivered after 1930 AST on Friday 6 December. The Minister will mark the twenty years of the IISS Manama Dialogue and also the year of Bahrain’s Presidency of the Arab League.

Wednesday, 20 November, saw the conclusion of another highly successful iteration of SDSC-UK. Having moved to Telford International Centre in 2023, SDSC-UK 2024 was bigger and better than ever.

With an expanded agenda, including an additional day focused on the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), the event which is unique in the UK Defence calender provided an invaluable platform for defence professionals to discuss and shape the future of technology and innovation in UK Defence.

22 Nov 24. Cuashub.com said today that Creomagic showcases UAS tech to counter electronic warfare. Creomagic Ltd., a developer of advanced communication technology, highlighted its work in secure and resilient communications for loitering munitions at SAE Media Group’s Loitering Munitions Conference in the UK on November 19-20. The company highlighted how its software-defined radio (SDR) seeks to nullify key C-UAS defences by protecting against electronic warfare techniques such as jamming, interception and GPS denial.

The focus on communication solutions comes at a time when loitering munitions and UAS are increasingly considered to be key components in the modern approach to warfare. As these systems have evolved, C-UAS strategies have naturally evolved alongside them and, with the development of loitering munitions that offer resistance against traditional electronic countermeasures, they will need to continue to do so.

This back and forth between UAS and C-UAS capabilities has been consistently demonstrated in the war in Ukraine, with each side constantly working to outpace the development of the adversary.

Creomagic’s Creo-ADL technology is designed to protect against countermeasures such as electronic jamming, interception and GPS denial, which are generally considered to be the most effective “soft-kill” solutions for neutralising UAS.

How does it work?

Creo-ADL incorporates AES-256 encryption alongside communication and transmission security to ensure data integrity and protect against interception. Cognitive SDR technology and frequency-hopping techniques enable anti-jamming measures, automatically mitigating interference in contested electromagnetic environments.

For scenarios where GPS signals are compromised, the technology enables navigation through RF-based positioning, utilising signal-of-arrival techniques. Additionally, its low-probability-of-interception and low-probability-of-detection capabilities make UAS much more difficult to track.

“These capabilities are not just technological advancements; they are operational imperatives,” explained Alex Shapochnik, CEO of Creomagic. “In environments saturated with countermeasures, the ability to securely and reliably exchange data determines mission success or failure.”

What are the implications for C-UAS?

As C-UAS systems grow more sophisticated, technologies like Creomagic’s represent a dual-edged evolution, enhancing offensive drone systems while challenging the efficacy of current defensive measures. The ongoing race between UAS and C-UAS technologies is accelerating the development of both.

While advancing the capabilities of their loitering munitions and protecting them against the C-UAS defences of the adversary is a development that any military commander would benefit from, it also raises the discussion around how we can counter the very same capabilities when possessed by that adversary.

21 Nov 24. SDSC-UK Returns to Telford with Expanded Focus on the Strategic Defence Review. Following its inaugural success at Telford International Centre in 2023, the Specialist Defence and Security Convention (SDSC-UK) once again opened its doors with an expanded agenda.

This year, the convention introduced an additional day focused on the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), providing an invaluable platform for defence professionals to discuss and shape the future of UK Defence.

The SDR, directed by the UK Government, will examine the roles, capabilities, and reforms required for UK Defence to meet the challenges of the 21st century. SDSC-UK will this year play a pivotal role in this process, with a dedicated day of expert panel discussions chaired by Major General (Retired) Robin Anderton-Brown, formerly Director of Capability, UK MOD Strategic Command and a long-time supporter of the convention. The insights and recommendations gathered from these discussions will be submitted to the SDR review team to help inform its ongoing work.

The first day of the conference was dedicated to a focused industry day which included insightful presentations from DE&S and UKStratCom giving some vital detail on the Special Projects portfolio, new approaches and better ways to work with industry. Most prominent on the agenda, was the VULCAN ecosystem, an innovative approach to sharing information more efficiently, allowing a more effective way of connecting innovation supply to Government demand.

Throughout the conference, attendees were able to engage with senior UK Ministry of Defence leaders, US Department of Defence representatives, and global industry experts. A highlight was the Future Comparative Testing (FCT) session which gave industry representatives the opportunity to meet key members of the FCT and Army Futures Command. These ‘Meet the Buyer’ sessions provided organisations with the opportunity to showcase their innovations and a chance to explore cutting-edge technologies tailored to defence and security needs.

20 Nov 24. Dates announced for In-Orbit Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing Conference 2025. The UK’s second In-Orbit Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) Conference will take place at the ICC Belfast on 4-6 June 2025.

Companies from Iran, Israel, China, Russia and the United States will showcase military equipment at an arms expo in Hanoi in December, Vietnam’s defence ministry said on Tuesday, a rare case of geopolitical rivals exhibiting their wares together.

Communist-run Vietnam has for years been seeking to diversify its military supplies to reduce its decade-long reliance on Russia, and has discussed potential procurement deals with multiple countries trying to leverage its flexible diplomacy of good relations with great powers.

At the defence expo to be held in the capital Hanoi on Dec. 19-22, nearly 200 companies from 27 countries have already reserved booths, the ministry said in a statement, including firms from China and Iran, which had not attended Vietnam’s first international military fair in 2022.

The expo will bring together defence companies from Israel and Iran, who have launched missile attacks and airstrikes on each other in the past year. Iran will attend even though it is subject to sweeping Western sanctions.

At the past edition in 2022, Israeli defence firms Elbit Systems (ESLT.TA), and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems were among the exhibitors.

Vietnam’s defence ministry has not released yet a full list of participants and it is not clear what arms will be displayed. Companies at times showcase only models of their bigger weapons.

China’s state-owned defence giant Norinco Group, which is subject to U.S. sanctions, will attend, Le Quang Tuyen, deputy head of the defence industry department, said on the sidelines of a press conference about the expo on Tuesday.

In the same large exhibition area in a military airport in the outskirts of Hanoi, U.S. companies Boeing (BA.N) and Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) will also have their booths, Tuyen added.

Lockheed Martin is in advanced talks with Vietnam for the supply of a handful of C-130 Hercules military transport planes, a senior U.S. official said earlier this month, confirming an earlier Reuters report.

A company spokesperson did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the matter.

The variegated list of attendees is “bamboo diplomacy on show,” said Nguyen The Phuong, an expert on Vietnamese security at Australia’s University of New South Wales, using a popular definition for Vietnam’s flexible foreign policy.

“Vietnam will play with any partner it sees fit, particularly in defence,” he said.

The country also intends to use the fair to strengthen cooperation with foreign partners to boost its growing domestic industry with tech transfers and “seek opportunities to export,” the defence ministry said.

At the 2022 expo, Vietnam signed five contracts with foreign defence firms, Tuyen said, although there is no public record for them.

18 Nov 24. Make UK Defence – Defence Industrial Strategy Workshops.

As you will be aware in July the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Defence launched the Strategic Defence Review. This review has begun to examine all aspects of defence and will draw upon insights from external military, industrial and foreign policy experts, as well as those within the Government, to help shape the future of Britain’s defence for the next decade. The review has benefitted from input from the defence industrial and technological base, including through the workshops which we are grateful many of you participated in.

Defence Industrial Strategy

The Government will also bring forward a Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) aligning our security and economic priorities. The DIS is also a sector plan of the UK Industrial Strategy, with defence being identified as one of eight growth-driving sectors. The Defence Industrial Strategy will be commissioned by the Secretary of State for Defence and will aim to create a better, bigger, more modern, connected, innovate and resilient defence sector. . We are in the process of developing this and are keen to engage with industry through to publication. We’d like to now convene two workshops around six themes:

Prioritise UK businesses: Prioritising investment in and growing the UK defence sector, aligning our economic and security priorities to promote UK growth and comparative advantage.
Create Partnerships: Creating new partnerships for research and industrial ventures between government and business and key international allies, boosting standardisation, interoperability, and achieving seamless data transfers.
Certainty and Stability: Adopting a Securonomics approach ((Link to Chancellor’s Washington Speech) to incentives investment and taking a cross-cutting approach to our critical supply chains.
Seize the Future: Supporting defence R&D and innovation with the right environment and policies in order to leverage the latest technology wherever it comes from.
Spread Prosperity: Aligning our security and economic priorities to actively generate wealth, boost export potential and create high quality jobs across all the nations and regions of the UK.
Deterrence: Strengthen the UK’s ability to tackle state and non-state threats below the threshold for armed conflict.

This process will build on existing engagement including input into the Strategic Defence Review and ADS hosted workshops. The Federal Aviation Administration estimates that the combined commercial and recreational unmanned aircraft system (UAS) fleet will surpass the two-m mark in 2024. While UAS have a variety of innovative commercial use cases, the proliferation of the UAS fleet can also pose safety and security risks to critical infrastructure, public gatherings and other areas that can be impacted by bad actors. Four federal agencies — the Departments of Defense, Energy, Justice, and Homeland Security — have been authorized to deploy counter-UAS technologies in certain circumstances to address malicious UAS operations.

Dr. Mehdi Asghari is a serial entrepreneur with a track record of success who currently is the CEO and co-founder of SiLC, his third silicon photonics startup, which focuses on advanced imaging solutions that enable machines to see like humans. He is one of the early pioneers of the silicon photonics industry with more than 25 years of commercialization experience in this space. Medhi’s previous startup, Kotura, for which he served as Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Engineering, was acquired by Mellanox in 2013. Prior to that, Mehdi was the Vice President of R&D at Bookham, the first company to ever commercialize silicon photonics. The third edition of World Defense Show (WDS) 2026, set to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 8-12 February, has secured the record participation of more than 100 defense sector companies from China.

This participation underpins the growing international interest in the event, which will showcase the future of defense through breakthrough technological advancements in the sector.

Since its inception, WDS has experienced substantial growth in exhibition space, more than doubling its size from 2022 to 2026.

Following international interest, the floor space for WDS 2026 is already more than 50 percent sold out. Specific to the China country pavilion, 88 percent of the space has now been secured by Chinese companies, positioning it as the 2nd largest country presence over hosting Saudi Arabia.

The significant participation and interest from Chinese companies has been highlighted during the 15th Airshow China, held from November 12-17, 2024, in Zhuhai.

WDS is participating in the 15th Airshow China, located at booth H5C19. Senior representatives of WDS are attending the event to provide potential exhibitors with the opportunity to learn more about WDS 2026.

Visitors can learn about popular features such as the ‘Meet the KSA Government’ program and enhanced WDS Connect. Other signature features, new show themes, and ways to network will be announced for WDS 2026 over the coming months.

13 Nov 24. Bahrain International Airshow 2024 launches with royal opening, aircraft debuts and international attendance.

Officially opened on behalf of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, by the Deputy King, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
World-class aircraft display was opened by the Royal Bahraini Air Force and Gulf Air and features BIAS debuts from USDOD B-52H Stratofortress and flydubai on the static.

On behalf of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Deputy King, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, inaugurated the seventh edition of the Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS) 2024 this morning at Sakhir Air Base which was held under the patronage of His Majesty the King.

Announcements came from a range of businesses in attendance across the show. Today Valo Aviation has become the Kingdom’s inaugural business jet operator after receiving its Bahraini Air Operators Certificate (AOC), with the aim to manage 15 aircraft within the next two years from its home base of Manama.

IronNet, the AI-based collective defense cybersecurity company, and Asterion, a leader in counter-UAS technology, also announced today at the Bahrain International Airshow a partnership on the protection of critical infrastructure through the integration of AI-based cybersecurity and counter-UAS solutions.

Over 125 different types of aircraft are being showcased, providing visitors the opportunity to experience them close up, before a curated flying display of assets and aerobatic teams takes to the sky to demonstrate the latest innovations and technologies in the industry. Aiming to be its busiest and most spectacular instalment yet, BIAS has also seen debuts from USDOD B-52H Stratofortress and flydubai within it’s static display.

Today’s afternoon flying display saw the skies above Sakhir Air Base filled with the world’s most renowned air display teams and aircraft, with showcases of the RBAF F-16, RSAF Saudi Hawks, RSAF Typhoon, US DOD F-16, Gulf Air B787-9, US DOD P-8 Poseidon, PAF JF-17, IAF Sarang Helicopter Team and The Global Stars.

The Bahrain International Airshow is held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, and under the supervision of His Highness Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Personal Representative of His Majesty the King and the Chairman of BIAS’ Supreme Organising Committee.

Over the course of the last year, TD-Info have been running a series of SME Showcase events, designed to provide a platform for our SME’s to present their Defence Industry capabilities and experiences of working with the MOD and the Defence Industry. Through these events, and other TD-Info facilitated SME engagement activities and conversations, a number of themes have emerged, around the challenges that SME’s face in the Defence Industry, as well as the success stories that we have seen.

To provide an opportunity for SME’s to input into the MOD’s new Defence Industrial Strategy, TD-Info, in conjunction with the MOD document authors, are running an online Teams event on 4th December between 10am and 12 noon. This event is open to all TD-Info members, and will aim to collate SME’s Defence business sector experiences for use in the Defence Industrial Strategy. The information obtained via the event may also be used for other purposes with the aim of improving the way MOD, Defence Industry and SME’s work together.

The government published its Industrial Strategy Green Paper in early October 2024. This event is an opportunity to provide feedback directly to MOD document authors, which will in-turn contribute to the wider strategy.

04 Nov 24. EURONAVAL 2024: The International Naval Defense Exhibition started at Paris Nord Villepinte

The EURONAVAL exhibition opened its doors on Monday November 4th at Paris Nord Villepinte, where it will welcome naval defense professionals from all over the world until November 7th. For this year’s show, the organizers are once again presenting an exclusive study of the world shipbuilding industry. This unique report offers a comprehensive, up-to-date analysis of the world’s fleets and orders for ships and submarines, confirming EURONAVAL’s role as a global benchmark for the sector.

This first day was marked by a warm and convivial inauguration, presided over by Pierre Eric Pommellet, CEO of Naval Group, Chairman of GICAN and President of Euronaval, Admiral Nicolas Vaujour, Chief of Staff of the French Navy, and Emmanuel Chiva, General Delegate of Armement. The speakers underlined the growing complexity of maritime issues in a tense geopolitical context, and highlighted major technological advances in naval innovation, consolidating EURONAVAL’s position as one of the leading showcases for the naval technologies of the future.

Numerous political and institutional decision-makers also honoured the first day of the show with their presence. The French Minister of the Armed Forces, Mr. Sébastien Lecornu, visited several stands, including those of Naval Group, MBDA and the Ministry of the Armed Forces.

The show also welcomed the Prime Minister of Romania, Mr. Ion-Marcel Ciolacu, accompanied by the Romanian Defense Minister, Mr. Angel Tîlvăr, and the Portuguese Defense Minister, Mr. Nuno Melo.

Finally, the program of round tables and workshops was a resounding success on the first day. The afternoon session, focusing on feedback from current conflicts, attracted a large audience, confirming the interest in a rich program of debates rooted in contemporary issues.

The SDSC-UK 2024 Conference focusses on the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), directed by the new Government. The SDR will determine the roles, capability and reforms required by UK Defence to meet the challenges, threats and opportunities of the twenty-first century, deliverable and affordable within the resources available to Defence.

SDSC-UK 2024 will explore three areas which are pivotal to this reform; how to acquire, scale and adapt digital capabilities at pace; how UK Defence can ensure it is interoperable with its allies including multi-national approaches to meeting capability requirements; and drawing from the conclusions of the Haythornthwaite Review of Armed Forces Incentivisation, how Defence can recruit and retain the skilled personnel it needs to meet the increased specialisms required to operate and exploit digital capabilities.

23 Oct 20. HENSOLDT to host the autumn symposium of the “Förderkreis Heer” in Heidenheim. Presentations, technology demonstrations and a site visit are the focus of the two-day event. Sensor solutions provider HENSOLDT, together with the Förderkreis Deutsches Heer (FKH) is hosting this year’s FKH Autumn Symposium, which will take place in Heidenheim on 23 and 24 October. The two-day event brings together representatives from politics, industry, research and the military to exchange views on current trends and technologies in defence technology.

The symposium includes a variety of technical presentations in which experts provide insights into various aspects of modern defence systems. Among other things, the future of network-enabled warfare, the further development of sensor and reconnaissance technologies, and innovative approaches to improving the protection and defence systems used in the land domain will be discussed. The presentations will provide an opportunity for detailed analysis and a professional exchange of ideas on current challenges and solutions. At the autumn symposium, HENSOLDT will also be presenting the latest generation of optronics systems and thermal imagers for the Leopard 2, PUMA and Boxer RCT30 tanks.

A key element of the event is the field demonstration of the Military Utility Vehicle (MUV). This demonstrates innovative reconnaissance capabilities through the integration of land-based networked sensors. During a field demonstration, the MUV can detect camouflaged combat vehicles using machine learning algorithms and transmit the information in real time to a networked command and control information system. Equipped with an AI-based reconnaissance assistant, the MUV also supports command and control by passing targets between the vehicle’s workstations. Networked sensors such as laser warners and optronics enable automatic threat detection, making the MUV a crucial component of modern combat operations.

Participants will also be able to experience HENSOLDT’s target optics in action at a specially designed firing range. These optics, which impress with their high precision and reliability, are part of the modern equipment that HENSOLDT already supplies for military and security applications, such as the ‘Infantryman of the Future’ system (german: Infanterist der Zukunft, short: IDZ) for the German Army.

In addition to the technical presentations, the participants of the autumn symposium will have the opportunity to visit the HENSOLDT site in Oberkochen. The modern site reflects the company’s continuous investment in research and development. The site is working on innovative solutions that will help shape the defence technology of the future.

20 Oct 24. Israel to take legal action against Macron over naval trade show ban. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on Sunday he had ordered his ministry to start legal proceedings against French President Emmanuel Macron after Paris banned Israeli firms from participating in an upcoming military naval trade show.

The decision to bar Israeli firms is the latest incident in a row fuelled by the Macron government’s unease over Israel’s conduct in the wars in Gaza and Lebanon.

Euronaval, organiser of the Nov. 4-7 event in Paris, said in a statement last week that the French government had informed it that Israeli delegations were not allowed to exhibit stands or show equipment, but could attend the trade show. The decision affected seven firms, it said.

“I have instructed the Foreign Ministry to take legal and diplomatic action against French President … decision to prevent Israeli companies from showcasing their products at the @SalonEuronaval exhibition in Paris next month,” Katz said in a statement on social platform X.

21 Oct 24. Sea Power for Africa Symposium 2024 wraps up with key outcomes and a declaration of intent. Fifteen African countries, including host South Africa, committed to a Sea Power for Africa Symposium (SPAS) Declaration of Intent during last week’s continental maritime summit in Cape Town.

The symposium, said by SA Navy (SAN) Public Relations to be the fifth of its kind, wrapped up business with nine “key outcomes” and a call to action by SA Navy Chief, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese.

Topping the “key outcomes” list is strengthened regional collaboration, explained partially by a need to break down barriers to inter-naval co-operation, share maritime domain awareness information and conduct regular joint maritime exercises. Another is accelerating implementation of the AIMS (African Integrated Maritime Strategy) 2050 by way of joint maritime patrols, “reinforcing information sharing between maritime domain awareness centres (MDACs)” as well as starting conceptualisation of the Combined Exclusive Maritime Zone of Africa (CEMZA).

An SA Navy post-symposium statement has it “Chiefs of navies from across Africa embraced Lobese’s call for unity encapsulated in the concept of Sisonke (‘together’ in isiXhosa)”. The emphasis on “together” stresses “a collective resolve among African naval forces to enhance collaboration in addressing maritime security challenges”. This is to be taken further by way of regional governance which will see an African Union (AU) maritime sub-committee to implement key maritime security initiatives. Another team will be set up to formulate the implementation of AIMS 2050 which, when complete, will be presented to Chiefs and Heads of African Navies.

Other outcomes adopted included support for the Lomé Charter (the African Charter on Maritime Security and Safety and Development); “prioritising engagement between African navies and African defence industries in naval acquisitions”; and future Sea Power for Africa symposia to be held every two years with Nigeria to host the 2026 iteration.

Country Declaration of Intent signatories listed by SAN Public Relations are Algeria, Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Togo.

The call to action was Lobese’s fare thee well to symposium delegates with him urging them to “immediately return home and put the plans discussed into practice”.

04 Oct 24. Protecting Critical Infrastructure Conference and Exhibition.

BATTLESPACE Publications is delighted to announce the launch of ‘Protecting Critical Infrastructure,’ to be held at Chepstow Racecourse prior to the Chepstow Military Raceday on November 6th 2024. The Conference will provide comprehensive coverage and discussion of the risks involved in holding large sporting events without the proper Counter-UAS systems and technology to protect participants and participating teams from aggressive drone incursions.

As the war in Ukraine progress into its second year, the Conference will examine the difficulties in protecting key infrastructure such as nuclear power stations, power stations, sporting events and military facilities from multiple drone swarm threats. A key factor in urban C-UAS scenarios compared to battlefield C-UAS is the limitation of the usage of kinetic and EW defeat systems. Urban sporting events require specialist C-UAS systems which can defeat the drone threat without damaging the infrastructure or jamming the radio spectrum.

A paper given by ZoneAware will focus on new regulations for sporting venues and events under Martyn’s Law.

Martyn’s Law is already prompting security reviews for events and venues and will come in over the next year or two for enhanced tier event venues over 800 people – Scrutiny in the House of Commons is coming up shortly and it will update on counter terror preparedness and have implications for the licensing of events and culpability for a failure to prepare adequately. The Security Industry Authority is noted as the new regulator. Drones are certainly part of that conversation on a sliding scale proportionally of what is needed to keep people safe on site. The bigger the meet / event the more likely a standard will need to be met for drone safety. ROCUs (Regional Counter Terror Policing Advisors) are already in training at some forward thinking areas of the country.

09 Oct 24. Ajax Takes Centre Stage At Chepstow Military Raceday. The Chepstow Military Race Day returns with a bang on November 6th with the General Dynamics UK Ajax vehicle taking centre stage with its inaugural public display at the racecourse.

General Dynamics UK, based in Merthyr Tydfil, is a major contributor to the Welsh economy, employing over 1,000 people across two sites in Merthyr Tydfil and Oakdale.

The Chepstow Military Raceday was started by Julian Nettlefold in 2014 in memory of his late mother who cared for his father who was 100% disabled having lost both hands and an eye in World War 2. Since inception, the Raceday has raised over £300,000 for military charities including SSAFA, Combat Stress and the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

02 Oct 24. Philippines draws defence firms as military modernises amid South China Sea tension. Global defence contractors put their advanced hardware on display as the Philippines embarks on the latest phase of a multi-bn-dollar effort to modernise its military at a time of rising tension in the South China Sea.

From Lockheed Martin of the United States to Sweden’s Saab, Israel’s Rafael, and the India-Russia joint venture BrahMos, a total of 291 firms showcased military technology and weapons systems at an exhibition in Manila last week.

“The Philippines is an emerging market for the defence industry,” said Chester Cabalza, president of a Manila-based think tank, International Development and Security Cooperation.

Manila has allocated $35 bn for the buildup, spread over the next decade, as it has faced off with China in sea and air confrontations over contested areas of the busy South China Sea waterway.

“Our strategic issues with China have caught the attention of defence firms, and the exhibit demonstrates support from like-minded nations, many of whom are our partners and allies,”

Cabalza added.

Under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the Philippines has looked beyond traditional ally the United States to step up security partnerships with nations, such as Japan and Australia, also concerned at China’s increasing regional influence.

“The goal of modernisation is to develop a credible defence force, whether there’s the China issue or not,” said Jesus Avilla, a former assistant defence secretary, while visiting the biennial Asia Defence and Security (ADAS) exhibition.

In the third phase of a decades-long effort to beef up territorial defence and maritime security, the Philippine military is looking to buy advanced assets such as fighter jets, submarines and missile systems.

While long-standing military ties ensure the United States is a key supplier, the Philippines has widened defence procurement to nations such as India, Israel, Poland, South Korea and Turkey.

Reflecting Manila’s expanding role in regional security, the exhibition featured new companies, and participating nations such as Britain, France and Japan.

Avilla stressed the urgency of modernisation as strategic challenges now stretch to encompass economic and food security, as the South China Sea holds crucial resources.

China claims almost the entire waterway, a conduit for more than $3 trillion of annual ship-borne commerce, despite overlapping claims by Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

However, in 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration said its claims had no legal basis, a decision China rejects.

“Our enemy is not joking because they can see that our equipment is not enough,” said Philippine navy officer Alandel Drilon, while inquiring about a multiple rocket launcher system.

“That’s our weakness at the moment, our vessels, they are old, so this exhibit is a good chance for our officers to see how they can improve our equipment.”

In 2022, the Philippines bought a $375-m BrahMos anti-ship missile system, and the firm is now offering a ship-mounted version.

“We hope for a positive outcome soon,” added Praveen Pathak, its director for market promotion and export.

State-run Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) [RIC:RIC:ISRAI.UL], which has earlier supplied advanced surveillance capabilities, such as electro-optic systems, is also ready to provide items from reconnaissance aircraft to coastal radar, said Maxim Zemer, a senior marketing official for Asia and Africa.

The Philippines is also evaluating offers for 40 multirole fighter aircraft. Though it has not disclosed specific bidders, Saab, with its Gripen jets, is widely considered a contender.

“We want to deliver credible, sustainable, cost-efficient, offensive air power to the Philippines,” said Jussi Halmetoja, air operations adviser and test pilot at Saab.

Saab has had “fruitful negotiation” with the Philippine defence ministry, Halmetoja added, and was ready to meet the needs of its air force.

A Gripen E fighter jet on display outside the exhibition drew throngs of visitors, some from the military, who sat in its cockpit, posing for photographs.

“Modernising our forces will take time due to the resources needed, but ADAS allows us to explore the capabilities available,” said Lieutenant General Charlton Sean Gaerlan, the Philippine armed forces’ deputy chief of staff.
