12 Sept 24. Chief of the Defence Staff Declares DSEI Theme ‘Crucial’ and the Event a ‘Special Point in the Calendar’ as Themes Launched.

UK Chief of the Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin KBC ADC, stresses “added importance of DSEI” within context of “various challenges across the globe.”

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin KBC ADC has launched the key theme for DSEI 2025, the UK’s flagship defence event, saying:

“The theme for DSEI of preparing our future armed forces is crucial. What is particularly significant for our senior leaders is how to prepare our Armed Forces for future challenges. That as the theme for DSEI 2025 is really important and really helpful for all of us in UK defence.”

The overarching theme for DSEI has been announced today as ‘Preparing the Future Force’, this will focus on the strategic, technological, and organisational shifts necessary to build and maintain a future-ready UK Armed Forces.

Held biennially in London, DSEI is a pivotal event for the defence industry to showcase newly developed and in-service capability to the global defence market in the halls of ExCeL, London.

DSEI also plays host to a conference for senior military, politicians and industry leaders to speak on key topics of current importance and for the future. The conference will be driven by the main theme Preparing the Future Force, and three sub-themes will guide discussions across the event:

  1. Securing Advantage: Agile Acquisition & Supply Chain Security

This theme explores how defence organisations can enhance their agility through faster acquisition processes and stronger, more resilient supply chains. With emerging threats and geopolitical tensions constantly reshaping the global landscape, ensuring supply chain security is vital to sustaining military readiness and securing operational advantage.

  1. Driving Advantage: Digital Transformation as a Force Multiplier

Digital transformation is transforming modern warfare, and this theme will explore how the integration of cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence, cyber capabilities, and data analytics, is multiplying force effectiveness. DSEI 2025 will highlight the role of digital infrastructure in enhancing decision-making, operational efficiency, and interoperability across defence ecosystems.

  1. Maintaining Advantage: Workforce Management & Talent Acquisition

As technology continues to evolve, so too must the workforce that operates it. This theme addresses the challenge of recruiting, training, and retaining top talent in the defence sector. It will focus on the importance of workforce diversity, leadership development, and continuous learning in maintaining a competitive edge.

16 May 24. DVD2024: Collaboration is key to delivering the most modern and lethal Army in Europe together.

On 18th and 19th September 2024, industry and Defence in the Land Equipment sector will meet at UTAC Millbrook for two days of coordinated engagement through informal discussions, briefings, demonstrations and displays. Jointly sponsored by Defence Equipment & Support (Land Equipment) and Army Headquarters, DVD2024 will provide opportunities for industry and key MOD stakeholders to discuss ‘Battle Winning Ideas’, resilience and collaboration, delivering increased capability and the ability to exploit innovation.

Working closely with DE&S and industry, the British Army is evolving; investing £41bn into land equipment, infrastructure and training over the next decade in order to accelerate the delivery of its equipment programme, and pursuing international collaborations to win a greater share of the global land export market.

DVD is a biennial Defence industry exhibition that enables focussed engagement between Defence industry, DE&S Delivery Teams, Army Headquarters staff and other Defence community users of Land Equipment.

The focus for DVD2024 will be on delivering the most modern and lethal Army in Europe together; forming military partnerships and generating investment into UK industry through the Land Industrial Strategy; learning from current conflicts and adapting at pace to optimise procurement priorities; accelerating the Future Soldier programme; and working with industry to exploit science and technology to develop next generation capabilities to meet the requirements of a modern, lethal army.

Governments are requesting EOIs for all areas of C-UAS. The MoD have issued a tender notice for C-UAS procurement with a spotlight on Electro-Magnetic DETECT and/or DEFEAT capabilities. Border Force, the prison service and CT Police are seeking solutions to the UAS threat. Drone incursions at sporting and music events are on the increase. With the announcement of Martyn’s Law to ensure stronger protections against terrorism in public places, the requirement for C-UAS systems is urgent.

As Paris builds up for hosting the forthcoming Olympics, a prime focus is the development and fielding of C-UAS systems to manage the skies over the venues and stadia, protecting them from a myriad of drone threats. A key factor in urban C-UAS scenarios compared to battlefield C-UAS is the limitation of the usage of kinetic and EW defeat systems. Urban sporting events require specialist C-UAS systems which can defeat the drone threat without damaging the infrastructure or jamming the radio spectrum.

In addition, a new menace has emerged on racecourses and sporting stadia throughout the world – drone incursions. These incursions include illegal gambling syndicates who use drones to fly alongside live races to beam photos back to the syndicates to make on-the-spot bets, paparazzi and blog sites filming sportsmen and women and famous high net worth individuals, probing into their private and social life, and even terrorist organisations intent on disruption of these events. This menace has grown exponentially as drone technology develops.

11 Sept 24. Airport Drone Protection announces Bicester Aerodrome will host annual Counter Drone (C-UAS) Live Demonstration Day. The Airport Drone Protection (ADP) event has announced the airfield at Bicester Aerodrome (UK) as the site for this year’s Counter Drone (C-UAS) Live Demonstration Day. This highly anticipated event will cap off the ADP Conference, scheduled to take place at the Park Plaza Victoria in London from November 26th to 28th.

ADP Director, Hector F. Olono Martinez, emphasized the planning behind the Live Demonstration. “From the entire investigation to site selection, we’ve engaged with regulators, law enforcement, military operators, and C-UAS companies to ensure that the demonstration aligns perfectly with the regulatory framework. We’ve reserved the entire airfield for the detection side of the demonstration and a second C-UAS testing exercise to be performed indoors in a Hangar. We are also planning some dynamics during the demonstration to make things more interesting.” Martinez stated.

He added “Although there isn’t an official C-UAS certification in place, we are collaborating with organizations that work with regulators and military on testing and certification of equipment. C-UAS participants will have the opportunity to engage with them at the event, although the process would take an extra week, they can get documentation to confirm that their equipment has been tested in the UK, which can serve as a significant credentials when engaging with potential clients, especially in the UK market”.

Usually, C-UAS companies go through this process when trying to enter UK markets, specially while dealing with law enforcement, military and even airports sometimes.

ADP has enlisted ex-Royal Airforce Air & Space Operations Specialist, Stefan Crossland, to oversee the flight and demonstration operations, using his past experience with the Red Arrows to add a little flair to the demonstration as well as ensuring safety and compliance. Crossland will coordinate with local authorities, emergency services, and regulators to establish contingency plans and issue a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to prevent any air space conflicts during the event.

Rheinmetall showcases military digital capability at Land Forces 2024.  Rheinmetall, the largest supplier of military vehicles to the Australian Defence Force is exhibiting the company’s portfolio of strength and capability for future land forces with combat, combat logistics and dismounted combat on display at Land Forces 2024, this week at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre.

Nathan Poyner, Managing Director, Rheinmetall Defence Australia, said this year’s display was a digital capability showcase that included Rheinmetall Defence Australia’s Combat Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Subsystem (CISRS) software.

“CISRS implements the digital backbone of the Boxer CRV fleet and follows a modular and open systems design pattern. CISRS currently hosts richly integrated software sourced from across Defence industry, other Land programs.”

“Rheinmetall’s Land Forces Display establishes our knowledge as a digitisation systems integrator through the dismounted and mounted Battle Management System (BMS) software to both Integrated Soldier Systems and the complex vehicle system of the Boxer CRV.”

“This provides the user a seamless common operating picture through mounted and dismounted forces with the Crew Terminal graphical user interface, a Software Development Kit adaptable for any vehicle platform.”

“Communicating with the Boxer CRV via a simulated Tactical Communications Network is an Integrated Soldier System End User Device (Tactical Smart Phone) hosting the Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) BMS.”

09 Sept 24. South Korea summit to target ‘blueprint’ for using AI in the military.

South Korea convened an international summit on Monday seeking to establish a blueprint for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the military, though any agreement is not expected to have binding powers to enforce it.

More than 90 countries including the United States and China have sent government representatives to the two-day summit in Seoul, which is the second such gathering.

At the first summit was held in Amsterdam last year, where the United States, China and other nations endorsed a modest “call to action” without legal commitment.

“Recently, in the Russia-Ukraine war, an AI-applied Ukrainian drone functioned as David’s slingshot,” South Korean Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun said in an opening address.

He was referring to Ukraine’s efforts for a technological edge against Russia by rolling out AI-enabled drones, hoping they will help overcome signal jamming as well as enable unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to work in larger groups.

“As AI is applied to the military domain, the military’s operational capabilities are dramatically improved. However it is like a double-edged sword, as it can cause damage from abuse,” Kim said.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul said discussions would cover areas such as a legal review to ensure compliance with international law and mechanisms to prevent autonomous weapons from making life-and-death decisions without appropriate human oversight.

The Seoul summit hoped to agree to a blueprint for action, establishing a minimum level of guard-rails for AI in the military and suggesting principles on responsible use by reflecting principles laid out by NATO, by the U.S. or a number of other countries, according to a senior South Korean official.

It was unclear how many nations attending the summit would endorse the document on Tuesday, which is aiming to be a more detailed attempt to set boundaries on AI use in the military, but still likely lack legal commitments.

The summit is not the only international set of discussions on AI use in the military.

U.N. countries that belong to the 1983 Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) are discussing potential restrictions on lethal autonomous weapons systems for compliance with international humanitarian law.

The U.S. government last year also launched a declaration on responsible use of AI in the military, which covers broader military application of AI, beyond weapons. As of August, 55 countries have endorsed the declaration.

The Seoul summit, co-hosted by the Netherlands, Singapore, Kenya and the United Kingdom, aims to ensure ongoing multi-stakeholder discussions in a field where technological developments are primarily driven by the private sector, but governments are the main decision makers.

About 2,000 people globally have registered to take part in the summit, including representatives from international organisations, academia and the private sector, to attend discussions on topics such as civilian protection and AI use in the control of nuclear weapons.

06 Sept 24. NASA brings space leaders to London to shape future of microgravity research. Leading space experts from around the world gathered at the Royal Institution today to discuss the future of microgravity research and human presence in low Earth orbit.

UK Space Agency, NASA and international partners at the LEO Microgravity Strategy Workshop in London.

NASA worked with the UK Space Agency to co-host the workshop, which builds on the success of two previous events held in 2022 and 2023.

The workshop brings together international partners to refine draft goals and objectives that will set strategic directions for the space community on scientific, exploration and commercial goals in low Earth Orbit (LEO).

A key focus of the workshop surrounds discussion on future low Earth orbit infrastructure. As new commercial space stations come online, there is an increased focus on preserving and expanding research capabilities and developing critical technologies for future deep space exploration.

The UK Space Agency is actively exploring how best to maximise the research, development and manufacturing opportunities this presents, and how to work constructively with international partners to support the transition.

More broadly, microgravity research is not only vital for space exploration, but also delivers benefits to Earth. It allows scientists to study biological, physical and chemical processes without the influence of Earth’s gravity, which has led to advancements in fields such as medicine, material science and fluid dynamics.

One important example is drug development, where protein crystal growth experiments conducted on the ISS have provided improvements to the treatment of numerous diseases including cancers and gum disease. Promising results have come from the study of a protein associated with the chronic genetic disorder Duchenne Muscle Dystrophy (DMD). Treatment for DMD is now in clinical trials – based on research from the ISS.

The study of fluid dynamics in microgravity also helps advance essential medical technologies such as life support systems.

Dr Paul Bate, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said: “We are proud of the UK’s role in space as a competent and reliable international partner. We will continue to work closely with NASA, ESA and other space agencies to ensure that microgravity research continues. As we navigate a rapidly evolving global landscape, the ability to contribute to cutting-edge research and innovation is crucial for driving economic growth and spreading prosperity across the country.”

After almost 24 years of continuous operation, the ISS is nearing the end of its life, and we will see a range of new commercial space stations established in Low Earth Orbit. It is vitally important that we maintain the ability to safely conduct science and research in space that benefits people on Earth.

NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy said: “We are grateful to the UK Space Agency for co-hosting our international Low Earth Orbit Microgravity Strategy Workshop. Consultation with our international partners is a cornerstone for guiding future research and development in microgravity. Our approach underscores our dedication to integrating diverse viewpoints to navigate the dynamic landscape of low Earth orbit.”

A number of UK science experiments have been launched to the ISS in recent years. These include the MicroAge experiment with the University of Liverpool, which investigated how muscle fibres change in space, providing insights into the ageing process. (Source: https://www.gov.uk/)
