15 Aug 24. Fiji, U.S., Host Seminar for Regional Land Forces. Against the backdrop of the scenic Pacific Ocean, and a traditional kava ceremony, the armies of Fiji and the United States kicked off the 48th annual Indo-Pacific Armies Management Seminar and the 10th annual Senior Enlisted in Fiji.
IPAMS is the largest conference for land forces in the region. It is co-hosted by the Fijian Army and United States Army Pacific, attracting senior army leaders from 21 Indo-Pacific countries.
“This seminar serves as a platform for leaders to exchange ideas, share best practices and forge stronger partnerships,” said Fiji Land Commander Brig. Gen. Onisivoro Covunisaqa.
U.S. Army Pacific commander Gen. Charles Flynn echoed those comments saying, “I think the structure that we have in the forums to discuss matters like humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and the role land forces play in those particular crises, where countries are challenged and people are struggling, is vitally important.”
The theme for this year’s conference is “Joint & Combined Operations in the Indo-Pacific Region.”
Flynn referred to this as a “unity of action,” involving synergistic applications of all partner forces. “What makes this such an achievable goal for this group of land forces, we can achieve unity of action because unlike our adversaries, we share a vision, a common vision, a vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said the U.S. commander.
Conferees participated in plenary sessions, as well as smaller breakout groups. They heard from distinguished guest speakers and participated in lively discussions on topics, such as peacekeeping operations, humanitarian assistance/disaster relief, leadership development and climate change.
Fiji last hosted this conference in 2006, but much has changed in the regional security environment to where both countries say they have improved capability and interoperability thanks to conferences like this.
“In 2006 we were not focused on the collective approach to threats in the Pacific,” said Covunisaqa. “But we are moving towards that now. I’m glad USARPAC has come with us, bringing partners, nations and our forces together to discuss common things during this conference.”
Flynn added, “I have seen at least in the last decade, a substantial increase in all countries wanting to conduct more multilateral activities to bring professional military and, in this case, army forces together to discuss common ways that we can overcome challenges.”
Those challenges said Flynn have been in cyber, transregional crime, human trafficking, illicit activities with fishing and narcotics “and then on top of that you’ve got some major powers and large countries that have lots of capabilities that can be threatening depending on how they’re used.”
Fiji and the U.S. participated in the annual joint exercise “Cartwheel,” named after an actual World War II military operation where both armies collectively helped secure this region. That’s how long both nations have been friends and more importantly reliable partners. “I will tell you with many nations throughout the ‘Blue Pacific,’ the U.S. Army would not have been successful had it not been for local forces being able to partner, demonstrate, assist and enable the U.S. Army to do a range of missions in the region.”
IPAMS is the region’s longest and largest running multinational military seminar promoting security, peace and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. In 1977, IPAMS started with nine nations attending in Honolulu, Hawaii, and expanded to more than 31 nations attending the conference in Seoul, South Korea in 2018.
This year’s lists included: Australia, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, Fiji, France, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, United Kingdom and Vietnam.
The SELF program was added in 2014, and this year drew the largest number of senior enlisted leaders with 16 participating.

The Ghana Army will host IDEC 2024 in Accra, August 28-29, gathering global security experts to address Africa’s pressing security challenges and strengthen international partnerships.
The Ghana Army is set to host the 2nd International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEC 2024) from August 28-29, 2024 at the Burma Hall, Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters in Accra.
Under the theme “Enhancing Regional Mechanisms for Addressing Contemporary Security Challenges in Africa”, IDEC 2024 aims to create a platform for insightful exchanges and discussions to identify new avenues for strengthening international partnerships and collaborations.

IDEC will also convene other key stakeholders from across the globe to collaborate on addressing Africa’s pressing security challenges.

14 Aug 24. NATO Military Committee Conference to be held in the Czech Republic.
. NATO’s highest Military Authority, the Military Committee, will meet from 13 to 15 September 2024, in Prague, Czech Republic. During the in-person meeting, the Chiefs of Defence will discuss military strategic developments within the Alliance. Czech President Petr Pavel, will join for the opening of the Military Committee Conference.
The first session will see the NATO Chiefs of Defence address the implementation of decisions made by the Allied Heads of State and Government at the Washington Summit in July 2024. As the Alliance celebrates its 75th anniversary, NATO leaders are taking major steps to further strengthen deterrence and defence, bolster long-term support to Ukraine and deepen global partnerships.
In the second session, Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Christopher G. Cavoli, will brief the Chiefs of Defence on the progress of the implementation of the DDA Family of Plans. These plans make the Alliance stronger and more able to deter and, if necessary, defend against any potential adversary. As part of NATO’s support package to Ukraine, this session will also discuss the establishment of the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), a new command which is designed to plan, coordinate and arrange delivery of security assistance.
In the third session, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation General Philippe Lavigne, will brief and update on the Alliance’s warfighting transformation in accordance with the NATO Defence Planning Process (NDPP). Among other topics, the Chiefs of Defence will discuss the launch of the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training, and Education Centre (JATEC), an important pillar of practical cooperation, to identify and apply lessons from Russia’s war against Ukraine and increase Ukraine’s interoperability with NATO.
The Military Committee meets in Chiefs of Defence Session twice a year at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, and once a year a Conference is held by an Allied member state. The Military Committee convenes to discuss NATO operations, missions and activities and to provide the North Atlantic Council with unfettered, consensus-based military advice on how the Alliance can best address global security challenges. Taking place from 1-3 October, the sixth edition of Intersec Saudi Arabia has sold out two months ahead of the exhibition start date
300 exhibitors confirmed from more than 27 countries has underscored the international demand to participate in the event, with more than 17,000 visitors expected to attend
The exhibition will be held under the patronage of the High Commission of Industrial Security and in association with the Ministry of Interior and Saudi Civil Defence from 1 – 3 October at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Center (RICEC)
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Intersec Saudi Arabia, the country’s leading trade fair for security, safety and fire protection, has officially sold out two months ahead of the exhibition start date. A record number of 300 exhibitors, representing a 25% increase on last year’s number, and more than 17,000 visitors are expected to attend.
The event, which will welcome 138 new exhibitors, including Saudi Arabian companies Draeger Arabia, Emdad Najed Company, and SETRA Saudi Electronic Trading & Contracting Ltd, as well as 162 returning companies, representing 27 countries. Three country pavilions have also been confirmed, including China, the Czech Republic, and the UK, further underscoring the event’s international standing.
Organised by 1st Arabia and licensed by Messe Frankfurt, the exhibition will be held under the patronage of the High Commission of Industrial Security and in association with the Ministry of Interior and Saudi Civil Defence. It will return for a sixth edition from 1 – 3 October at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Center (RICEC).
