MARITIME

21 Apr 26: HII, America’s largest military shipbuilder and global leader in autonomous maritime systems, announced today plans for the production of four ROMULUS 151 vessels to be built by Breaux Brothers Enterprises in Louisiana in addition to the ROMULUS 151 currently under construction. The announcement signals a rapid shift toward initial production, as HII pushes to accelerate delivery of autonomous surface capability to the US Navy and allied partners.

“ROMULUS represents a shift in how we deliver unmanned capability to the fleet,” said Andy Green, executive vice president of HII and president of HII’s Mission Technologies division. “We are combining shipbuilding experience, scalable manufacturing, proven autonomy, and strong industry partnerships to move quickly from prototype to operational deployment. The progress we are seeing today – including these initial production vessels – reinforces that we are on a disciplined path to deliver meaningful capability at speed and at scale.”

Built for Scale and Mission Flexibility: ROMULUS is a modular family of AI-enabled USVs designed to meet current and emerging requirements for the US Navy, US Marine Corps, joint forces, and allied partners. The platform supports a wide range of missions, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), mine countermeasures, strike operations, counter-unmanned systems, and the launch and recovery of unmanned underwater and aerial vehicles.

Engineered for serial, repeatable production, ROMULUS vessels combine endurance, global reach, and modular adaptability. The family is designed to scale across multiple vessel sizes while maintaining a common manufacturing approach and autonomy baseline.

24 April 26.U.S . Navy Commissioned Submarine Idaho (SSN 799). The Navy commissioned the 26th Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, the future USS Idaho (SSN 799), during an 11 a.m. EDT ceremony Saturday, April 25, at Naval Submarine Base New London, Connecticut.

The Honorable James Risch, U.S. Senator from Idaho, delivered the ceremony’s principal address. Additional speakers are set to include the Honorable Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Senator from Connecticut; the Honorable Brad Little, Governor of Idaho; the Honorable Michael Simpson, U.S. Representative from Idaho; the Honorable Joe Courtney, U.S. Representative from Connecticut; the Honorable Hung Cao, acting Secretary of the Navy; Adm. William Houston, Director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program; and Mark Rayha, president, General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB).

The submarine’s sponsor, Teresa Stackley, is the daughter of a Navy Sailor and the spouse of the Honorable Sean Stackley, a former Naval officer who served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition from 2008 to 2017. In keeping with Navy tradition, Stackley will give the crew the order to “man our ship and bring her to life.” With the hoisting of the colors and commissioning pennant, acting Secretary Cao will formally place the ship in active service.

SSN 799 is the fifth Navy ship to be named for the state of Idaho. The first was a wooden-hulled steam sloop commissioned in 1866. The most recent was a New Mexico-class battleship, BB-42, which was commissioned in 1919. BB-42 participated in major Naval battles in the Pacific campaign from 1942 to 1945 and received seven battle stars for service in World War II.

Idaho is the 26th Virginia-class submarine co-produced by GDEB and HII-Newport News Shipbuilding through a long-standing teaming arrangement. The submarine is the 14th delivered by GDEB and the eighth Block IV-configured Virginia-class submarine. Idaho was christened March 16, 2024, at GDEB’s shipyard in Groton.

As it joins the fleet, Idaho brings significant warfighting capability, underscoring the Nation’s asymmetrical advantage at sea. Virginia-class fast-attack submarines have enhanced stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and special warfare enhancements that enable them to meet the Navy’s multi-mission requirements.

Each Virginia-class submarine is 7,800 tons and 377 feet in length and has a beam of 34 feet. It is designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship, reducing life-cycle costs while increasing underway time.

The commissioning of USS Idaho underscores the Navy’s commitment to building America’s Fleet of the Future. For 250 years, American naval power has projected strength globally. That mission continues – and intensifies. We operate forward 24/7, 365 days a year. This operational tempo demands continuous capability delivery, and the Fleet of the Future is our answer.

29 Apr 26. Corvette LÜBECK: Rheinmetall celebrates first ship christening. Today, with the christening of the fifth K130-class corvette (second batch), we have reached a significant milestone in one of our current shipbuilding programs for the German Navy. The ceremony took place at Rheinmetall’s Blohm+Voss site in Hamburg and in the presence of representatives from politics, industry, and the Bundeswehr (The German Armed Forces), including Vice Admiral Axel Deertz (Deputy Inspector of the Navy and Commander of the Fleet and Support Forces), Jürgen Giefer (Director at the BAAINBw – Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the German Armed Forces), and the Mayor of Lübeck, Jan Lindenau. Lübeck’s City President Henning Schumann’s partner, Huong Nguyen christened the approximately 89-metre-long vessel with the name LÜBECK.

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG, stated: “The christening of this vessel marks a special milestone for us and for me personally. After all, this is the first ceremony of its kind for Rheinmetall. Together with our new Naval Systems division and through our leading role in this and other important shipbuilding projects, we are taking responsibility for strengthening the defence capabilities of our country and our NATO partners. My thanks go to all employees and our partners whose dedication is driving the completion of these technologically sophisticated naval units.”

Following the christening, LÜBECK will be commissioned as planned after her final outfitting in Hamburg. She will then undergo all necessary functional testing and acceptance procedures in close coordination with the relevant departments from the contracting authorities and the German Navy.

Tim Wagner, CEO of Rheinmetall’s Naval Systems division, said: “With the christening of the final corvette of the second batch, we have reached an important stage in the overall project. Our focus now turns to the upcoming milestones, which will culminate this year with the delivery to our customer of the two corvettes EMDEN and KÖLN.”

The new units are specifically designed for coastal operations and are therefore particularly suited for reconnaissance and anti-surface warfare, especially in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

Jan Lindenau, Mayor of Lübeck: “That the corvette bears the name of our city is both an honour and a sign of the close ties with our armed forces, who perform a vital service for the security of our country and for peace around the world. I am delighted that the Navy represents the name of our Hanseatic city and thus also serves as an ambassador for a historic and cosmopolitan port city.”

The new corvettes are being built by the K130 consortium (ARGE K130), led by Rheinmetall’s Naval Systems division in cooperation with TKMS and German Naval Yards Kiel.

Embraer’s participation in the Hannover Messe – the largest industrial technology event in the world – sought to showcase the company’s innovations and sustainable initiatives, identify new technologies, and strengthen strategic partnerships.

24 Apr 26. Embraer (NYSE: EMBJ/ B3: EMBJ3) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Defense of Brazil and TKMS with a view to the construction of a second batch of four Tamandaré-class frigates. The signing took place during a Brazilian Navy ceremony marking the commissioning of the F200 Tamandaré frigate, the first vessel of the class, into the Brazilian Navy’s fleet.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes the foundation for the continuation and expansion of the Tamandaré‑Class Frigates Program (PFCT), aligned with the letter of intent signed this week by the governments of Brazil and Germany in Hannover. The initiative aims to renew the Brazilian Navy’s fleet, strengthen its operational capabilities and defense industrial base, and create export opportunities benefiting both countries.

“This Memorandum of Understanding aims to negotiate a new batch of four Tamandaré‑Class frigates, reaffirming the long‑standing Brazil–Germany partnership and the strategic cooperation with TKMS, while preserving and advancing transferred technological know-how, strengthening Brazil’s defense industrial base, and creating export opportunities for both countries”, said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security.

Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS: “Advancing with a new batch of frigates is essential to sustain critical capabilities and preserve the knowledge developed through technology transfer under the Tamandaré Program. This memorandum also reflects the strong cooperation between Brazil and Germany and TKMS’s long-term commitment to Brazil.”

The Tamandaré-Class Frigates Program (PFCT) is one of the most significant modernization initiatives of the Brazilian Navy. The contract was signed in 2020, and approximately 2,000 professionals are directly involved in the construction of the vessels. Including indirect and induced effects, the program has generated around 23,000 jobs, reflecting its strong multiplier effect on the economy.
