01 Aug 24. Farnborough International Airshow 2024 delivered the apex of aviation. Farnborough International Airshow 2024 cemented its positioning as the must-attend event in the aerospace calendar and delivered its busiest event in recent decades, with a 33% increase on visitors, 57% increase on delegation attendance and more than $105bn in commercial deals announced by industry titans. The show, which took place 22-26 July, welcomed over 100,000 visitors, 1500 exhibitors from over 60 countries, 90 civil and military aircraft, and over 390 civil, military and space delegations at its sold-out 2024 instalment.

Opened by the UK’s new Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, eyes from around the world were fixed on Farnborough as the airshow convened international industry titans, start-ups and pioneers from aerospace, defence and space for five days in Hampshire, UK.

The airshow saw $105.8bn in commercial aircraft and engine orders announced from the likes of Airbus, Boeing, Embraer and many more, worth £13bn to the UK economy. In addition, the UK Government used the opportunity to announce Skills England, a body that aims to provide valuable opportunities for ambitious young individuals, particularly those interested in apprenticeships.

New for 2024, the UK Government Hub provided political, industry and international stakeholders with a unique platform to elevate an incoming government’s backing for UK aerospace, defence and space sectors. Ten different government departments and agencies had a presence at the Hub which proved a highly attended feature of the show. Another first for the event was the dedicated air display live stream, in partnership with Aerospace Global News, attracting more than 178,000 views throughout the week.

The next generation of leaders was invited to experience the world of aerospace, engineering and STEM at Farnborough International Airshow’s Pioneers of Tomorrow, a day dedicated to inspiring, engaging and recruiting the industry’s future workforce. Featuring an extended flying display and a Careers Hub, it provided industry exhibitors an unrivalled opportunity to meet potential aerospace recruits; the day welcomed more than 20,000 public visitors to the 500,000sqm site.

More than 100 companies have already rebooked for the 2026 event, taking place 20-24 July 2026 at Farnborough International’s Exhibition & Conference Centre, including the likes of Bell, Viasat, Reaction Engines, MBDA, and Northrop Grumman. 29 Jul 24. Chief Defence Scientist to join DIDS Summit. Industry. Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist, Professor Tanya Monro AC is the latest high-profile speaker to confirm her speaking session at the upcoming Defence Connect DIDS Summit to be held in Sydney on Tuesday, 6 August.

The summit will focus breaking down each of the Sovereign Defence Industrial Priorities (SDIPS) outlined in the Defence Industry Development Strategy which include:

Maintenance, repair, overhaul and upgrade of Australian Defence Force aircraft;
Continuous naval shipbuilding and sustainment;
Sustainment and enhancement of the combined-arms land system;
Domestic manufacture of guided weapons, explosive ordnance and munitions;
Development and integration of autonomous systems;
Integration and enhancement of battlespace awareness and management systems; and
Test and evaluation, certification and systems assurance.

Mr Garman added, “Though the release of the new sovereign defence industrial priorities represents the opportunity for renewed focus on innovation in the industry, ensuring that our defence businesses are investing in those capabilities and emerging technologies that matter most for our soldiers, sailors and aviators.”

25 Jul 24. Farnborough International Airshow 2024 closes with an impressive £81.5bn worth of deals and a focus on the Pioneers of Tomorrow

As a hugely successful Farnborough International Airshow 2024 drew to a close with £81.5bn worth of deals, the focus on the fifth and final day was firmly on the next generation who will be shaping the future of the industry. Sponsored by ITP Aero.

As Farnborough International Airshow (FIA2024) wraps its 45th edition, it’s been a soaring success with £81.5bn worth of deals agreed at the biennial airshow and 260 firm commercial aircraft orders made across the show’s first four days. For the UK alone, the total deals announced so far are worth £13bn.

And with the orders now done and dusted for this year, the focus on the fifth and final day of FIA2024 was very much on inspiring the pilots, engineers, manufacturers and innovators of the future.

Commenting on the value of events such as Pioneers of Tomorrow and the role it plays in encouraging young people into the sector, Royal Danish Air Force’s Captain Troels ‘Teo’ Vang, said it’s crucial we showcase the opportunities for young people across the sector so they understand what’s available.

Meanwhile and with women serving as both its CEO and head of manufacturing, ITP Aero is leading from the top when it comes to encouraging diversity across the workforce. Debbie Wilson, ITP’s head of quality told Aerospace Global News that although aviation is traditionally a male dominated industry, it’s great to see that changing as women increasingly rise through the ranks. The company’s STEM ambassadors were also gathered at the airshow to inspire young people. “It’s all about mentoring children and people from different backgrounds as we embrace a diverse workforce,” said Wilson.

Another industry leader ensuring diversity is at the top of the agenda, Virgin Atlantic is working hard to champion individuality through its ‘See the world differently’ campaign. It is also actively encouraging more women to train as pilots. “From zero to flying your first commercial airline full takes 13-months full time, but there is plenty of training and support.” She also noted young people shouldn’t be deterred if they don’t have a scientific degree. “Once you are on that training course, you’ll be supported every step of the way. If it’s your passion, don’t let anything put you off!”

And when it comes to training as an astronaut, even that’s no longer a ‘space’ dominated by men. Thirty-three-year-old astrophysicist Rosemary Coogan who qualified as a European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut in April said diversity is taking the space sector to another dimension. “Out of the five ESA astronauts I completed my training with, two were female and three were male, so we’re almost at that 50:50 split.”

Coogan also highlighted that diversity is about much more than gender. It’s also about empowering people of all backgrounds and abilities within the industry.

Aerobility’s Harvey Matthewson is one such person. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at the age of two, a bad experience on a family holiday as a child put him off flying for good. Or so he thought, until a trip with a charity project to Africa in 2014 forced him to face his fears. He determined to return to the skies and achieve his PPL.

And while diversity and inclusion is improving across the sector, there is plenty of work still to do to make aviation truly accessible. Aerobility is a UK-based charity providing anyone with a disability with access to flying. “Bringing disabled people into the industry will only benefit it,” said Matthewson. “Imagine you are a wheelchair user and dependent on a carer for all your needs. But then you get in the pilot’s seat, out of your wheelchair. That feeling is profound,” he continued.

As the show wrapped up and all eyes turned to the skies above for the final air display of the week, there was an exciting formation from the Starlings Aerobatic team, as well as the Stampe Formation team which showcased their brightly coloured heritage aircraft. With a need for speed, the Royal Air Force performed an F-35 fly past, while the F-15QA bid farewell as it roared its way into the clouds, while the British Army’s world-famous Red Devils parachuted back to ground to close the show!

With an eye toward initiating or expanding global aerospace and defense partnerships, the United States brought more than 400 exhibitors, an array of military and commercial aircraft, and a high-level contingent of diplomatic, government, military, and industry leaders to next week’s 2024 Farnborough International Airshow.

Against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions, particularly wars in Ukraine and Gaza, it’s the largest international presence on-site and the country’s strongest showing at Farnborough since the pandemic, underscoring America’s unwavering commitment to cooperation on a wide range of global and regional issues, foremost peace and economic security.

“I’m thrilled to see a strong U.S. presence at Farnborough this week. From the big names that everyone knows and trusts to the smaller companies that are crucial links in the supply chain, every U.S. aerospace and defense company plays a vital role in projecting American power and supporting American partnerships across the world,” said United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Jane D. Hartley. “And the United States truly has no closer partner, no closer military relationship, than the one we have with the United Kingdom. Together, we defend democracy, liberty, the rule of law, and the right of every nation to its sovereignty and security.”

The hub of U.S. industry at the show is the USA Partnership Pavilion, organized for 28 years (13 editions accounting for the canceled 2020 event) by Kallman Worldwide, Inc., in coordination with government agencies including the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Defense, State and Transportation. Covering 4,500-plus sqm in Halls 2, 3, and 4, the Pavilion is America’s headquarters on-site, a high-profile showcase for 250 U.S. exhibitors to meet more customers and prospects, and a venue for all to share ideas and insights.

Pavilion exhibitors are looking to generate new business and create more jobs back home by growing exports, expanding their international footprints, and/or recruiting overseas partners to establish or participate in stateside operations. The roster includes 74 exhibitors that are new to the show and 49 new to the market. A total of 34 are states represented, including 17 stand-alone state pavilions — Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York (North Country), North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia, and Washington — within the larger U.S. space.

Adjacent to Hall 1, Kallman also hosts the Partnership Chalet, a 1,400 sqm executive business and hospitality destination that is home base for 18 participating clients.

Kallman Worldwide President and CEO Tom Kallman said American participation in the show, particularly in the Pavilion, reflects larger trends in global trade.

Endeavour Scholarships Advance the Future Workforce

The Pavilion will also be buzzing with reports from the Astronaut Al Worden Endeavour Scholarship Program, Kallman’s lead corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, which successfully graduated its Class of 2024 — 32 students and 8 educators from six countries: Australia, Chile, Poland, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States — earlier this month at Space Camp in Huntsville, AL.

The not-for-profit program was launched in 2019 by Kallman to honor his friend and colleague, Worden, pilot of the Apollo 15 Command Module “Endeavour.” The two shared a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education that led to Worden serving as Kallman Worldwide’s STEM ambassador at trade shows around the world from 2016 until his passing in 2020. He was succeeded in this role by Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot, Charlie Duke who passed the torch to former NASA Space Shuttle Commander, Mike Bloomfield in 2023.

To date, the program has awarded scholarships of a week-long, hands-on, astronaut team training experience at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Space Camp to 80 students and 20 educators from nine countries. The all-expenses paid scholarships are funded entirely by private donations.

“The global support for Endeavour is deeply gratifying and exemplifies the spirit of partnership that fuels this program. Every country we work in — and we’ve worked in at least 50 of them since my father founded the company in 1963 — is facing the same challenges to prepare its young people for the future. 26 Jul 24. Bangkok to Host Asia’s First International Drone Exhibition

GML Exhibition (Thailand) has launched DronTech Asia 2024, the continent’s first international drone exhibition and conference. The event is scheduled for Nov 25-27 at Impact Exhibition and Convention Center in Bangkok.

The global market for commercial drones or unmanned aerial vehicles was valued at US$20.8 billion in 2021. It is expected to reach $1.2 trillion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) at 14% for several years, according to a Straits Research market forecast for 2022-2030.

Manu Leopairote, chairman of GML Exhibition (Thailand), the region’s leading exhibition and conference trade organiser, said drone usage is growing in various industries because it reduces human labour and increases trade advantages. Some examples include checking inventory in warehouses, watering plants and adding fertiliser, and taking bird’s-eye-view photos and videos, said Mr Manu.

Given this growth, the company sees many opportunities to support such expansion, he said.

Mr Manu said the exponential growth of commercial drones is attributed to their superior flight speed, durability, strength and precision, resulting in growing applications in many sectors, such as agriculture, energy, construction and logistics.

According to the forecast, the Asia-Pacific drone market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 19.8% from 2020 to 2025, driven by increasing usage in agriculture, mining, security and construction.

The DronTech Asia 2024 event is expected to attract 5,000 participants and buyers from more than 100 industries, as well as investors and venture capitalists, researchers, academics, drone advocates and enthusiasts, according to GML.

The event will showcase the capability, benefits, and Southeast Asia’s rapidly growing leadership in this industry, he said, adding it is expected to create new opportunities for local and international drone-related companies to meet more end users, system integrators, customers and business influencers.

The expo is supported by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa), the Defence Technology Institute, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, the Drone Association of Thailand, and many other government organisations.

Preesan Rakwatin, executive vice-president of Depa, said the agency recently launched the One Tambon, One Digital (Drone Jai) project as part of drone use promotion that focuses on promoting farmers’ knowledge, understanding and skills required to operate and maintain drones in the agricultural sector.

Depa supports the industry using advanced drones to provide maintenance services, spraying and distribution, he said.

After one year of the project, the agency expects 50 drone maintenance service centres nationwide.

The project will encourage villagers in roughly 500 different communities to adopt more drone technologies in the agricultural sector, which is expected generate at least 350 million baht in economic value, said Mr Preesan.

The project supports the government’s plan to upgrade national digital capabilities to enhance competitiveness.

Chatchai Puntragul, manager of the Unmanned Aircraft Standards Department at CAAT, said regulatory matters need to be addressed to support future drone use.

He said these issues include certifying different uses of drones, such as medium-sized drones, registration, certification of different types of drone pilot training centres, and drone pilot licensing (basic and advanced levels). (Source: UAS VISION/Bangkok Post)

23 Jul 24. UK to host world-renowned International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE-40). The UK will host the 40th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE-40) at the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre, Hampshire, from 17 to 21 March 2025. ISRSE-40 will run alongside the inaugural Farnborough International Space Show, an event which will pioneer the commercial space age.

Convened biennially since 1962, the Symposium is a global summit for world-renowned experts to share crucial, emerging knowledge in pursuit of protecting the planet and its people from harm.

The Symposium will host multiple international agencies including NASA and ESA, leading scientists, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners all dedicated to the advancement of remote sensing technologies and the data analysis pivotal to Earth observation capabilities and space applications.

Titled ‘Synergy in Sight: Harnessing Earth Observation for Sustainable Development’, the symposium will emphasise the integration of scientific and technological disciplines through Earth observation to promote sustainability, as well as nurture the next generation of space professionals in the sector.

Organised by the International Committee for Remote Sensing of Environment (ICORSE), the biennial symposium will run alongside the Farnborough International Space Show 2025 thereby uniting key constituents of the international space community. Collaboration will foster innovation across the fields of remote sensing, Earth observation, and the wider international space ecosystem to drive sector advancements and accelerate new technologies.

A partnership between a consortium of UK-based organisations, including Farnborough International, National Centre for Earth Observation and Space South Central, and ICORSE, the event will foster international collaboration, drive innovation, and address key global challenges including climate change, resource management, and disaster response. Figures from ADS Group indicate significant growth to the UK space industry which directly employs 48,800 people, delivering high value jobs for a highly skilled workforce, and supports 2,300 apprentices across the sector. Turnover growth continues to increase year on year, reaching £17.5bn in 2022 and adding £7 bn to the UK economy, with space exports valued £5.9bn to the UK in 2022.

Discussing the announcement, John Latham, President, International Centre for remote Sensing of the Environment, said: “Hosting ISRSE40 offers a pivotal moment for the UK to affirm its leadership in the global space community, driving forward our commitments to innovation, education, and sustainable development. We are poised to deliver a conference that not only addresses today’s challenges but also inspires solutions for the future.”

22 Jul 24. U.S., Mexican Troops Participate in Fuerzas Amigas. American soldiers from the U.S. military’s premier chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosives command participated in a bilateral exercise with the Mexican Army in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, June 24-28.

Soldiers from the Fort Riley, Kansas-based 172nd Chemical Company supported Exercise Fuerzas Amigas.

The Chemical Company soldiers were among the approximately 220 U.S. troops and 300 troops from the Mexican Armed Forces who participated in the annual exercise.

The Theater Security Cooperation exercise was designed to strengthen the military-to-military partnership between the U.S. and Mexico.

U.S. Army North served as the Joint Force Land Component Command and maintained operational control of the exercise.

Part of U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Army North conducts defense of North American exercises and security cooperation activities to increase readiness and deter strategic competitors.

The exercise included command and control synchronization, chemical decontamination, mass casualty triage, evacuation and search and rescue training.

U.S. Army Hazard Response companies conduct chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear reconnaissance, surveillance and decontamination operations with conventional and special forces around the world and provide support to civil authorities across the nation.

The 172nd Chemical Company is assigned to the 2nd Chemical Battalion, 48th Chemical Brigade and 20th CBRNE Command.

Headquartered on Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, the multifunctional and deployable 20th CBRNE Command is home to 75 percent of the active-duty U.S. Army’s explosive ordnance disposal technicians and CBRN specialists, as well as the 1st Area Medical Laboratory, CBRNE Analytical and Remediation Activity, five weapons of mass destruction coordination teams and three nuclear disablement teams.

Hanwha Aerospace will join the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow with a strong presence, offering a range of advanced solutions in the aviation and space domains.

At the biennial event taking place from July 22-26, Hanwha Aerospace will showcase the prototype of a homegrown 15,000lb.-thrust-class turbofan engine on par with GE’s F414. This will be the first unveiling of the Korean aviation engine concept, as the engine is expected to power South Korea’s KF-21 jet fighters in a future tranche and uncrewed combat aircraft as well.

The homegrown engine initiative came after decades of engine manufacturing and production achievements through technical cooperation with global top engine makers. Hanwha Aerospace is the only manufacturer of aero gas turbine engines in South Korea, achieving a major milestone of producing over 10,000 engines in April 2024.

“Leveraging our decades of accumulated experience and exceptional expertise in aircraft engine manufacturing, we’re fully committed to developing an aero turbofan engine of our own technology,” said Executive Vice President Mr. Kim Won-wook, Head of Advanced Aero Engine Business Unit. “With the successful development of K-21 fighter jets, and growing defense industry capabilities in Korea, we are confident in the success of our endeavor.”

Hanwha Systems will offer a series of innovative avionics systems technologies, including active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars for different types of combat aircraft.

“This is a key strength of Hanwha,” said Mr. Park Hyuk, Head of Surveillance & Reconnaissance Business Division at Hanwha Systems. “From engines to radars and sensors, Hanwha has a full capability to supply core components and technologies for making sophisticated fighter jets.”

Hanwha’s cutting-edge space technologies will also be shown off at the show, as Hanwha Aerospace is taking the lead of South Korean efforts to advance its space launch capability. The homegrown KSLV-II space launch vehicle will be displayed in a mock-up, along with SpaceEye-T, the world’s highest resolution commercial earth observation satellite.

Also known as Nuri, the KSLV-II is a three-stage launch vehicle with a payload capacity of a 1.5-ton to Sun-synchronous orbit (SSO). As the systems integrator, Hanwha Aerospace will take charge of KSLV-II’s future launch missions through 2027.

Built by Satrec-I, a subsidiary of Hanwha Aerospace, SpaceEye-T is capable of identifying the type of vehicle on the road from space, using its super resolution 0.3m imagery capabilities. In addition, Hanwha Systems will showcase its small synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite, which has been in orbit since December 2023.

16 Jul 24. Japan, US and Australia join forces for first information warfare event. International military personnel have gathered for Exercise Blue Spectrum, the first information warfare event involving Japan, the US, and Australia.

Sailors and officers from the Cyber Forces Group, the United States Navy, and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) attended the first iteration of Exercise Blue Spectrum in Sydney.

“The Royal Australian Navy has hosted the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and US Navy for the first iteration of the Cyberspace Defence exercise, Exercise Blue Spectrum,” according to the Department of Defence.

“This is the first trilateral information warfare event to occur since the signing of the memorandum of JMSDF-US Pacific Fleet-Royal Australian Navy IW Cooperation.”

The Trilateral Maritime Information Warfare Working Group Guidance Memorandum was signed between the JMSDF, RAN, and US Pacific Fleet in April this year.

The memorandum is intended to deepen cooperation of all partners on non-kinetic information operations related to intelligence, communications, meteorology/oceanography, electromagnetic, cyber and space domains, in addition to kinetic operations of the three fleets.

“This is a perfect opportunity to put into practice the tight cooperation our leadership codified in writing just a few weeks earlier,” said US Navy Captain Errol Laumann, Information Warfare Commander for CSG 5, about the signing earlier this year.

“Our work together during this deployment proves we can quickly and tangibly implement this deeper information warfare coordination, expanding the scope and clarity of our shared battlespace awareness.

“As we continue to improve our IW interoperability, we ensure our navies can react seamlessly as a unified force to any emergency or crisis.”

The US Navy’s Information Warfare Community includes personnel specialising in intelligence, cryptology, cyber warfare, information technology and meteorology and oceanography.

It’s mission is to defeat any adversary by using assured command and control, battlespace awareness, and integrated fires to achieve freedom of manoeuvre across all warfighting domains.

26 Jun 24. GBAD Expo 2024 – 11 July 2024. The international Defence industry, government officials and military hierarchy from NATO Armed Forces will converge on the home of the British Army’s Air Defence capabilities, Thorney Island for the 2024 GBAD Expo (Ground Based Air Defence).

To keep the delivery of Land GBAD at the forefront of Defence mindset – 7th Air Defence Group (12th Regiment RA, 16th Regiment RA & 106th Regiment RA) will host a GBAD Expo on 11 July 2024.

It will be a significant scale demonstration of Land GBAD capability, designed to showcase the employment and development of current equipment, and further enable future Land GBAD. The day will demonstrate current GBAD fielded force, the initial stages of the Land GBAD Programme journey, and potential future capabilities under six themes: command & control, sensors, effectors, C-UAS, simulation, and training.

The day will be structured in three stages: (1) Fight Today – the opportunity to showcase and demonstrate the UK military’s current Short and Medium Range Air Defence capabilities; (2) Fight Tonight – a look at what equipment the British Army has on its order books including: the VAMTAC Rapid Ranger mounted systems and Sky Keeper, the upgrade to the land environment air picture provision (LEAPP), and (3) Fight Tomorrow – a peek beyond the horizon and perhaps the most exciting and revealing aspect of the day. Leading defence industry manufacturers will explain and demonstrate their emerging technologies and developments being trialled, among them anti-drone developments using laser and radio frequency disruptors to intercept UAVs.

The conflict in Ukraine has brought into stark reality that Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) remains an indispensable component of warfare. Against a complex and prolific aerial threat – surface-to-air warfare has become an enabler for freedom of action; from the tactical through to the strategic level. A large part of the GBAD Expo will concentrate on the systems designed to take down such weapons. There will be target acquisition and tracking demonstrations using a replica Shaheed-136; designed to replicate the performance envelope of the Iranian built UAV.

24 Jun 24. Future of fighting in cyberspace: What to expect at TechNet.

Defense leaders know one thing to be true about the future of warfighting: it will become increasingly complicated as battles are waged in cyberspace.

That probability is what senior-level military, government and industry leaders will be discussing at this year’s flagship TechNet Cyber conference presented by the Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association International in Baltimore, Maryland.

This year’s theme of the three-day event beginning Tuesday is about “outpacing the threat,” and innovators in the defense technology space will discuss how their tools fit within the military’s goals to align their defenses with the nature of cyber warfare, adapt to rapidly changing environments, and accelerate ahead of global adversaries. All the topics du jour will be on the table, including artificial intelligence, large language models, contested logistics and data strategy.

Knowing future battles will transcend borders and go beyond just physical assaults on adversaries, experts in the U.S. government and industry know the tools of the future must be secure. Knowledge in itself will become an edge in battle. As nations like China seek to advance their use of artificial intelligence for military gain, so, too, are the U.S. and its allies working to understand and leverage this technology in defense of its infrastructure.

Attendees will hear from top officials from the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Defense Innovation Unit, the Joint Force Headquarters, federal chief information officers and chief technology officers, and the service’s cyber commands on the range of multidimensional threats facing their warfighters and the nation.

Other sessions that morning will highlight progress being made on the Defense Department’s sprint toward achieving “target level” zero trust by 2027 with insights from within the Pentagon’s information office itself.

Governments are requesting EOIs for all areas of C-UAS. The MoD have issued a tender notice for C-UAS procurement with a spotlight on Electro-Magnetic DETECT and/or DEFEAT capabilities. These incursions include illegal gambling syndicates who use drones to fly alongside live races to beam photos back to the syndicates to make on-the-spot bets, paparazzi and blog sites filming sportsmen and women and famous high net worth individuals, probing into their private and social life, and even terrorist organisations intent on disruption of these events. This menace has grown exponentially as drone technology develops.

14 Jun 24. Pentagon Exhibit Showcases Cutting-Edge Manufacturing Technologies. Critical materials made from flowers, heat exchangers that help keep military assets on station for longer, and environmentally friendly explosives that help keep American troops safe were among the military technologies Pentagon officials saw at the third annual Defense Department Manufacturing Technology Program Pentagon Day exhibition on June 4, 2024.

The event featured advanced manufacturing technology projects the ManTech program is accelerating to bolster the DOD’s capabilities to deter and defeat adversaries.

The program is made up of investment programs operated by the Air Force, Army, Navy, Defense Logistics Agency and Office of the Secretary of Defense.

In addition to seeing firsthand the technologies, attendees also learned about ManTech’s mission — to keep service members safe and ensure the DOD can deter and defeat ambitious adversaries through the maturation of technologies that support the Joint Force’s needs, in both tactical and operational settings.

All three OSD ManTech investment portfolios — Manufacturing Science and Technology Program, DOD Manufacturing Innovation Institutes and Manufacturing Education and Workforce Development Program — took part in the event alongside the military services and the defense agency ManTech programs that make up the Joint Defense Manufacturing Technology Panel.

“The ManTech program is crucial for scaling up technologies from lab innovations to real-world military applications,” said Tracy Frost, ManTech’s program director. “Our mission is to reduce the acquisition and supportability costs of defense systems and shorten manufacturing and repair cycle times.”

This year’s event highlighted how the program supports agility and rapid modernization capabilities to support long-term strategic advancements and urgent modernization projects.

Leaders from the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, including Heidi Shyu, the OUSD(R&E), and Aprille Ericsson, the assistant secretary of defense for science and technology, toured the exhibits alongside Frost and other ManTech leaders.

Spotlight: Engineering in DOD

Featured exhibits included a heat exchanger from MII America Makes that uses additive manufacturing to improve cooling efficiency and design flexibility in military engine components, which helps extend operational time for vehicles and other assets. Another item was a rocket nozzle developed through new additive technologies and specialized materials that provides supply-chain flexibility.

BioMADE featured rubber made from dandelions, which promises to increase sustainability and decrease carbon emissions in addition to reliance on imports.

“The MIIs are public-private partnerships that support various technology domains, such as additive manufacturing and photonics,” said Frost. “By uniting public, private, and academic players, we can move faster and more efficiently to benefit the U.S. military.”

Other technologies on display included the JDMTP’s 6T battery technology — an Army ManTech innovation — that revolutionizes ground vehicle energy systems with improved reliability, lifespan and performance of lithium batteries. The Army ManTech team also displayed DBX1 Green Energetics, an environmentally friendly explosive that enhances safety and performance in military ordnance.

Shyu, whose priorities as the Pentagon’s chief technology officer include creating an ecosystem in which members can work together to create integrated defense capabilities, said bringing together innovators to showcase their work was especially critical for leaders to understand the opportunities available in the department.

“We can’t go it alone,” she said. “The innovations I saw showed the depth and breadth the department needs to take on the challenges of today and tomorrow. DOD ManTech’s ability to bring so many experts across the multiple domains together to work as a team is just exactly what keeps America safe and our domestic manufacturing base more dynamic.”

31 May 24. France bans Israeli companies from annual Eurosatory arms fair. France has banned Israeli companies from participating in this year’s annual Eurosatory arms and defence industry exhibition in Villepinte near Paris next month, the event’s organisers and the French Defence Ministry said on Friday.

“Following a decision by government authorities, there will not be an Israeli stand at the Eurosatory 2024 salon,” a spokesperson for the organisers said via email.

The Defence Ministry told Reuters that: “Conditions are no longer met to host Israeli companies at the show at a time when the President is calling for Israel to cease operations in Rafah.”

Earlier this week, President Emmanuel Macron said he was “outraged” over an Israeli airstrike that triggered a fire killing 45 people in a tent camp in the Gazan city of Rafah and prompting an outcry from global leaders. (Source: Reuters)

For five days at Berlin/Brandenburg’s airport BER the focus was on the future of aerospace. Taking as its slogan ’Pioneering Aerospace’, the event gathered representatives of international industry, politics, the armed forces and science. Around 600 exhibitors from 31 countries presented a wide range of hi-tech and R&D projects. Some 350 speakers discussed the latest aerospace topics on four stages. Key subjects were climate-neutral aviation, security and defence and the benefits of space flight for humanity. There was keen public interest in the show – tickets for the open weekend soon sold out. A total of around 95,000 participants from around 60 nations attended the ILA.

Martin Kroell, member of the board and SME officer of the BDLI: “ILA once again proved how important it is for the German aerospace industry, not only as a showcase for our innovative drive, which fascinates both trade visitors and the public, but also because it thrives on political impulses and ideas. All the stakeholders for maintaining our technological leadership came together and engaged in a dialogue – on subjects including zero-emissions aviation, defending our freedom and Europe’s sovereign access to space.“

Federal government strongly represented

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz opened ILA Berlin with a tour of the event. The federal government very much supported a strong aerospace industry, said the federal chancellor in his opening speech. “We want to see the German and European aerospace industry leading the world, in each of the three areas ILA also focuses on: civil aviation, defence and not least space flight.“ Scholz also announced the purchase of a further 20 Eurofighters at ILA.

Among those accompanying the chancellor were Federal Minister of Transport Dr. Volker Wissing, Brandenburg’s Minister President Dr. Dietmar Woidke, Berlin’s Senator for Economics Franziska Giffey, Federal Government Coordinator of German Aerospace Policy Dr. Anna Christmann, Inspector General of the Bundeswehr Carsten Breuer, and CEO Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg Aletta von Massenbach. On his tour of the event, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck learned about the aerospace industry’s innovations in climate-neutral aviation and visited the Defence Park. Kai Wegner, Governing Mayor of Berlin, as well as CDU leader Friedrich Merz also visited the ILA. Among those accompanying him were the deputy leader of the parliamentary group Johann Wadephul (MdB) and the members of the Bundestag Julia Klöckner and Jens Spahn.

ILA features the entire range of aerospace products

Around 100 aircraft were on display at this year’s ILA – ranging from drones and helicopters to a large passenger airliner. They included an Emirates A380, a Beluga ST and an A321 XLR – with its fuel consumption per passenger now reduced to 30 per cent less than the previous generation of aircraft, this airliner contributes significantly to sustainable aviation. Other highlights were an A310 Air Zero G, used to conduct parabolic flights, and a Do 328 – a flying test bed for eco-friendly aviation technology. Visitors were also able to view the entire range of military aircraft – including a Loyal Wingman, an A400 M transport aircraft and an F-35 multirole stealth fighter, which for the first time took part in an ILA flying display.

The diversity on show at ILA was also reflected in the business deals announced there. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser was on the grounds to sign a 1.9 bn euro contract with Airbus Helicopters for H225 Super Puma transporter helicopters for the German Federal Police. The Working Group on Climate-neutral Aviation, which gathers leading stakeholders from politics, science and industry, also presented its recommendations for zero-emissions aviation. Also at ILA, over 40 companies, international organisations and science hubs signed the Zero Debris Charter whose goal is for space to become debris-neutral.

From Advanced Air Mobility to Space – a wide-ranging program of stage events

The focus on the four stages was on the latest aerospace topics. Whether the subject was alternative propulsion systems such as hydrogen or batteries, or optimised manufacturing using lightweight designs, new materials and aerodynamics for minimising CO2 emissions – achieving zero-emissions aviation by 2050 was one of the key topics on the ILA Aviation Future Lab stage. On the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) stage the topic was mobility in the third dimension: unmanned aerial systems and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are opening up new possibilities, including for wind turbine maintenance, transporting medical supplies and human rescue operations.

At the Defence Forum Air, taking as its slogan ’Airpower worldwide – Global Perspective / Regional Focus’, the Bundeswehr and industry showed how important the air force is for maintaining peace, freedom and security. Each of the three days featured a different topic: Central Europe, the Indo-Pacific and the Global Perspective. At the Space Pavilion the focus was on the benefits of space flight for life on Earth. Among the highlights was the ’Talking to Astronauts’ format with Matthias Maurer, Alexander Gerst, Thomas Pesquet, Nicola Winter, Amelie Schoenenwald and Samantha Cristoforetti. Also at ILA, ESA announced 9 July 2024 as the launch day for Ariane 6.

Taking place for the first time was the TALENT HUB, which brought talented people of all ages and backgrounds together with employers. Over 40 exhibitors from all parts of the industry took part in the Talent Hub. Some 1,500 visitors attended, including students of all ages, people from other industries and professionals in search of new challenges.

ILA Berlin 2024 kicks off today with the slogan ‘Pioneering Aerospace’. Over the next five days at Berlin/Brandenburg’s airport BER the focus is on the future of aerospace. The industry’s leading trade fair for sustainability, new technologies and innovation is the meeting place of the international industry, policymakers, armed forces and science. Under the headings Defence & Support, Aviation, Space, Suppliers and Advanced Air Mobility, ILA Berlin covers the entire range of the aerospace market. What makes ILA unique is its wide-ranging programme on four STAGES, where the focus is on climate-neutral aviation, new mobility and space security.

Visits by high-ranking politicians: Federal Chancellor Scholz to open ILA

In view of the political and strategic importance of the aerospace industry, high-ranking politicians have announced their participation. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz will officially open ILA Berlin 2024. Among those accompanying him on the opening tour will be Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Affairs Dr. Volker Wissing, Brandenburg’s Minister President Dr. Dietmar Woidke, Berlin’s Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises Franziska Giffey, and Director General GD DEFIS of the European Commission Timo Pesonen. Also due to attend ILA Berlin are Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Dr. Robert Habeck, Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius, as well as CDU party leader Friedrich Merz and numerous other political representatives from Germany and abroad. ILA Berlin – the largest aerospace exhibition in the EU

The European Commission is the strategic partner of the event and for the first time is represented at ILA with four directorates general (Mobility and Transport, Defence Industry and Space, Research and Innovation and Climate Action). Taking as its slogan ’Airborne in Europe’, the European Commission and ILA Berlin have made it their goal to strengthen Europe’s technological leadership and pave the way for a sustainable future for aerospace. With European elections taking place soon, ILA also sets the tone for European solidarity and sovereignty.

Exhibitors from all over the world present hi-tech solutions

Around 600 exhibitors from 31 countries are represented at ILA – including from Ukraine, Israel and for the first time Finland, which recently became a member of NATO.

Covering a display area of 150,000 square metres, exhibitors are displaying their innovations – including electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, climate-friendly propulsion systems, and air defence and satellite systems. At ILA visitors can get a close-up view of around 100 aircraft – both on the ground and in the air. The flying displays will for the first time feature an F-35 multirole stealth fighter, as well as a Tornado, painted in special colours to mark its fiftieth anniversary. An A321 XLR airliner, an NH90 NATO helicopter and an A330MRTT refuelling aircraft will also be flying over the exhibition grounds. This year, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Airbus, Emirates and the German Armed Forces are focusing on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for their aircraft.

The static display features the entire range of aerospace products – including a Loyal Wingman military drone, an Elektra Trainer electric aircraft, and the world’s largest passenger airliner, an Emirates A380. Among the highlights on the weekend for the general public will be an A310 Air Zero G, which the German Aerospace Center uses to conduct parabolic flights.

Focus on innovation, new technology and sustainability at ILA

ILA’s wide-ranging and well-informed programme of stage events makes it unique. Over the five days of the event the focus on the four STAGES is on the latest aerospace topics. Key headings are Innovation and Technology, Sustainability, Design, Talent Development & Social Responsibility, National and International Cooperation, Research & Development, Defence & Security, as well as start-ups and SMEs. High-profile speakers including Inspector of the Air Force Ingo Gerhartz, ESA Director General Dr. Josef Aschbacher, and Deputy Director-General for Research and Innovation, European Commission, Joanna Drake, are due to attend.

ILA Space Pavilion: meeting place of the global space flight community

ILA Berlin is Europe’s most-visited aerospace exhibition. The focus is on topics such as sustainability, climate change, digitalisation, research and defending Earth from space. The highlight is the Space Pavilion, which jointly features the European Space Agency (ESA), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), and the German aerospace companies in the BDLI. The wide-ranging programme of events, including onstage, with high-profile aerospace players shows how space missions can benefit life on Earth. This is where visitors can meet and talk to astronauts including Nicola Winter, Samantha Christoforetti and Thomas Pesquet.

Talent Hub brings specialists and employers together

ILA Berlin is open to trade visitors during the week from 5 to 7 June and to the general public on the weekend on 8 and 9 June from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Friday the TALENT HUB is taking place for the first time at ILA, which brings talented people of all ages and backgrounds together with employers. 40 exhibitors from all parts of the industry are taking part in the Talent Hub. Some 600 students of all ages are expected to attend. Around 1500 participants are expected to attend, including students and school pupils, but also career changers and experienced professionals looking for new challenges.

From flight simulators for electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOLs) with mixed reality technology to hydrogen fuel cells for the climate-neutral flying of tomorrow to air defense and defense systems – ILA Berlin is Europe’s most important trade show for aerospace innovations. From June 5 to 9 it will be showcasing the future of flying at the capital region’s airport BER. Today the Minister President of Brandenburg, Dr. Dietmar Woidke, and the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, took a first look at the highlights and innovations of some 600 exhibitors from all over the world during their “ILA Backstage” tour. “Following a decision by government authorities, there will not be an Israeli stand at the Eurosatory 2024 salon,” a spokesperson for the organisers said via email.

The Defence Ministry told Reuters that: “Conditions are no longer met to host Israeli companies at the show at a time when the President is calling for Israel to cease operations in Rafah.”

29 May 24. EUROSATORY LAB: more than 60 French and international start-ups to unveil their latest innovations.

EUROSATORY, the global event for all Defence and Security professionals, will be opening in less than a month’s time, from 17 to 24 June 2024, at Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre. At this 28th edition of the tradeshow, more than 60 French and foreign start-ups, gathered in the Eurosatory LAB in hall 5A, will present their very latest innovations in the field of defence and security.

As an innovation ecosystem where start-ups are given the opportunity to interact with industry experts, investors and decision makers, Eurosatory LAB is an essential springboard in the quest for the disruptive innovations set to make the difference in the fields of military defence and civil security. By bringing together promising start-ups and established industry players, this space catalyses new synergies and opens up new avenues for significant breakthroughs in the security and defence world.

Eurosatory LAB thus gives young companies a chance to present their novel solutions to an international audience, while benefitting from an environment conducive to networking and collaboration. The 2024 edition of Eurosatory LAB is shaping up to be particularly productive. Participating firms work in a wide range of areas: new materials, 3D printing, “inexhaustible” energy sources, genomics, artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, Internet of Things and blockchain, etc.

This year, artificial intelligence takes centre stage in the LAB, in particular with firms involved in solutions to make software and equipment dedicated to security and to detecting threats such as CBRNe risks. These solutions call on innovative materials, which can be used in other areas such as smart apparel.

Logistics will also feature prominently, with maintenance, asset and personnel location, spare part management, manufacturing and standards compliance. Once again, artificial intelligence comes into play in manufacturing processes and data management.

The Eurosatory LAB offering will be rounded out by around 20 start-ups exhibiting in the GICAT pavilion as part of GENERATE, the GICAT innovation accelerator.

27 May 24. Tech.eu, a leading media platform dedicated to providing news coverage, analysis, and insights into the UK and Europe’s technology sector, has concluded its 2024 annual tech summit in London. Tech.eu is owned by Webrazzi, the most influential tech media company in the EMEA region, and has now hosted over 100 events since it was founded 17 years ago.

Key highlights of the Tech.eu London Summit 2024 included addresses from Saqib Bhatti, the UK Minister for Technology, and Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Turkiye Minister for Technology. Webrazzi, the parent company of Tech.eu, was also afforded the privilege of opening the London Stock Exchange on Friday 17 May before the final day of the conference commenced. The VIP Reception and Tech.eu Night Party also provided attendees with additional networking opportunities, whilst the highly popular startup stage gave over 25 founders the opportunity to pitch to investors.

Participants had access to the Tech.eu Events app, which was developed by Webrazzi Technology, and was used over the course of the summit. Through the app, a total of 3000 messages were exchanged, and 300 meetings organised, enabling founders and technology experts to trade ideas and discuss innovation. The Tech.eu Summit is an annual conference that brings together key stakeholders in the European tech industry and is designed to facilitate connections and discussions around the most important issues facing the industry today. This year’s event took place in London for the first time and attracted a variety of startup founders, technology journalists, VCs, and investors.

In his address, Saqib Bhatti provided an overview of how the Technology sector has grown in recent years, stating that government policy has been a key enabler. Today, the UK Technology sector is worth over £1 trillion GBP – only the third country to meet this feat. He was succeeded by the Turkish Minister for Technology, Mehmet Fatih Kacır, who talked about how Turkiye is emerging as a growing innovation hub for technology, asserting that it has hundreds of companies with unicorn potential. He encouraged entrepreneurs to consider working in the country and benefiting from its young and enthusiastic workforce. The median age of entrepreneurs in Turkiye is 10 years lower than the European average.

There were also a range of presentations from startup founders. Matt Ondler, president of Axiom, for example, discussed how the conditions in Space enable stem cells to grow rapidly, providing opportunities to develop new drugs at a considerably faster rate. He also asserted that the conditions will enable the printing of human organs. In addition, there were numerous panel discussions, roundtables, and presentations centred on important technology-related topics such as deep tech, climate tech, AI, tech and wellness, quantum computing, SaaS, Web3, and more.

The UK Technology Sector was ranked the best in Europe and third in the world at the end of 2022, reaching a combined market value of $1 trillion USD (£793.8 bn GBP). Furthermore, the UK Tech Workforce is expanding. According to the CompTIA State of the Tech Workforce UK 2023 Report, net-tech employment has increased by 75,280 new jobs since 2017. These statistics demonstrate the size and scalability of the technology sector within the UK, and by moving its conference to London, Tech.eu aims to bring the biggest event uniting the technology ecosystem in the world’s capital of tech.

Commenting on the conference, Arda Kutsal, Founder and CEO of Webrazzi, said: “We’re delighted to arrive in London with our Tech.eu Summit. 24 May 24. DASA’s commitment to supporting national security shines through at the DASA Security Showcase. Over 40 security innovations take the spotlight at the DASA Security Showcase, ranging from cyber defence and drone systems to enhancing crowd safety using AI. Providing security for the UK and its citizens is one of the most important and challenging responsibilities of government and is growing increasingly diverse and complex. To maintain a strategic advantage, we need to ensure the UK has capabilities to ensure public safety and deal with a broad range of challenges that disrupt our way of life.

Working on behalf of government defence and security organisations since 2016, DASA has sought ways to improve the security of the UK and has run over 30 Themed Competitions with a national security focus, ranging from tackling knife crime, to counter drone technologies and improving crowd resilience on behalf of our partners across government.

DASA also opened the Security Open Call in 2021 to harness the potential of UK suppliers to see what they have to offer and find the very best innovative ideas that benefit national security.

To showcase just some of the many relevant, unique and cutting-edge national security innovations that DASA has funded over the years, DASA held the Security Showcase on May 16, 2024. At the event, more than 40 DASA-funded innovators participated, presenting their ground-breaking projects to government partners, law enforcement, industry leaders, and national armed forces.

Throughout the day, exhibitors also delivered insightful presentations on how to contribute to national security, covering vital topics such as:

Collaboration: How innovation is a collaborative responsibility among Government, industry, and academia.
Diversity: Why engaging with innovative entities of various sizes, ages, backgrounds, and industries is essential.
Engagement with government: Understanding key challenges and backing innovative initiatives through collaboration with the government is vital.
Paths to impact: Leveraging the diverse array of ideas available to the government and effectively implementing them for practical use are essential.

28 May 24. EURONAVAL, the world’s leading naval defence exhibition, will be held for its 29th edition from 4th to 7th November 2024 at the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre (hall 6). Organised by SOGENA, a subsidiary of the GICAN (French Maritime Industry Group), this biennial event will once again serve as a strategic crossroads for the world’s naval industry players.

29 May 24. Canada: Major defence tradeshow will likely face activism-related domestic unrest risks in Ottawa. On 29-30 May, the Canadian Association of Defense and Securities Industries will host its annual defence tradeshow ‘CANSEC’ in the capital Ottawa (Ontario). CANSEC is North America’s largest defence tradeshow and will showcase technologies, products and services for military units. The event is sponsored by many leading tech and defence firms; government officials, national media and international delegations will be in attendance. The convention, which takes place at the EY Centre in southern Ottawa, will highly likely be targeted by pro-Palestine and anti-war demonstrations during the show’s proceedings. While the conference’s heightened security presence will moderate the risk of clashes or vandalism, activism and domestic unrest risks will be sustained. This menace has grown exponentially as drone technology develops.

21 May 24. IAEA Conference Focusses on Strengthening and Sustaining Nuclear Security Amid Emerging Threats. Over 130 countries meet at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) this week to strengthen nuclear security efforts to counter the threat of nuclear terrorism and other malicious acts in the face of emerging risks.

At yesterday’s opening session of the International Conference on Nuclear Security, a major nuclear security event happening every four years, the Co-Presidents released a joint statement recognising how the growing use of nuclear science and technology requires robust nuclear security measures to enhance and protect nuclear material and other radioactive material against theft and nuclear facilities against sabotage.

The joint statement from Tim Watts, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia, and Sungat Yessimkhanov, Vice-Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan, the Co-Presidents of the Conference, was finalised following negotiations with all IAEA Member States. It highlights how emerging and innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), present both challenges and benefits for nuclear security.

The joint statement reaffirmed that nuclear security measures may enhance public confidence in the peaceful use of nuclear applications. The global application of nuclear technology continues to expand, spanning from clean energy to life-saving advancements such as radiotherapy for cancer patients, and even the development of novel crop varieties through irradiation.

Nuclear security is a national responsibility and involves preventing, detecting and responding to malicious acts with nuclear material, radioactive substances or their associated facilities. The increasing global use of digital technologies means that concrete vigilance is needed to precisely address computer security threats, cyberattacks and any potential vulnerabilities that digital technologies have and are presenting.

“The many benefits from nuclear applications depend on a strong and adaptive global nuclear security regime and laser-focused vigilance. Groups with malicious intent must not be given a chance to use nuclear and radioactive material to cause panic or harm,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi at the opening of the week-long conference at IAEA headquarters.

The joint statement reaffirms the common goals of nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear disarmament and peaceful uses of nuclear energy and recognizes that nuclear security contributes to international peace and security.

National statements delivered messages on achievements in nuclear security since the last ICONS conference in 2020 and supported the central role of the IAEA in assisting Member States, upon request, in establishing and improving effective and sustainable national nuclear security regimes, including through guidance development, peer review and advisory services and capacity building.

“Our attendance at ICONS, a key event for our global nuclear security community, signals our shared commitment to strengthening nuclear security,” said Assistant Minister Watts. “It provides an opportunity for us to progress aligned commitments and priorities and to work closely on our respective national nuclear security regimes.”

“Despite some risks and challenges — from climate change and natural disasters to global pandemics — AI products and advanced computing technologies offer new opportunities to strengthen nuclear security regimes,” said Vice-Minister Yessimkhanov. “Strengthening national nuclear security regimes helps to prevent the illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive material.”

About the International Conference on Nuclear Security

Over 2000 participants from more than 130 IAEA Member States and organizations are gathering for the International Conference on Nuclear Security: Shaping the Future (ICONS2024). It follows earlier high-level IAEA nuclear security conferences held in 2013, 2016 and 2020. The conference covers topics including policy, law and regulations for nuclear security; technology and infrastructure for nuclear security prevention, detection and response; capacity building for nuclear security, as well as other cross-cutting nuclear security topics.

Since the ICONS 2020 conference (February 2020), the IAEA has expanded its nuclear security work. A Nuclear Security Training and Demonstration Centre was inaugurated in October 2023, and 28 events have already been held in this the first international training centre on nuclear security. The Agency has provided support to 22 major public events, including the 28th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP) held in Dubai in December 2023 and the Africa Cup of Nations held in Cote D’Ivoire in January 2024.

The Agency yesterday also released the 2024 Factsheet for the IAEA Incident and Trafficking Database (ITDB), citing 168 incidents reported by 31 States in 2023. A total of 4243 incidents of illegal or unauthorized activities involving nuclear and other radioactive material have been reported since 1993.

Strategic Command facilitated a Five Eyes Combined Digital Leadership Forum in Portsmouth, bringing together Chief Information Officers, Chief Data Officers, and the Combined Communications and Electronics Board from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The purpose of the event was to provide the Five Eyes community with an opportunity to share insights and ideas, and exchange and coordinate our data, digital and technology approaches with close allies.

Discussions covered:

Digital deterrence – exploring how we can contribute to our collective deterrence posture by enhancing the integration and resilience of our digital enterprise.
Common standards and open architectures.
Cyber resilience.
Relationship with defence and technology industry around the globe.
Machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Management of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Together, the combined leadership signed a charter agreeing new ways of working that will help pursue common goals more efficiently to support the alliance.

By accelerating current projects and launching new initiatives that will enhance digital interoperability between allies, the Five Eyes community will work as an even more resilient and unified group ready to face current and future threats.

17 May 24. G3AM, a “world first” AAM standards-sharing association, launches in Korea.

The “world’s first” international fact standardisation organisation for advanced air mobility (AAM), the Global Association for Advanced Air Mobility (G3AM), has been officially launched today in Korea. According to the IT Chosun news website:

“The G3AM launch ceremony was held on the 14th at the conference hall on the 31st floor of Lotte World Tower in Songpa-gu, Seoul, hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, hosted by G3AM, and sponsored by the Korea Telecommunication Technology Association (TTA). Guests included, John Curl Walker, chairman of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TC20/SC16 Unmanned aircraft systems)….

“Fact standardization organizations, including G3AM, bring together the industry and carry out activities to establish standards that meet market needs. If a specific company’s technology becomes the de facto standard, the company that developed that technology will lead the industry. This is because industry members must use fact-standard technology.

G3AM emphasizes that it is important to secure international standards for interoperability, reliability, and sustainability as AAM applies various technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI) and mobile communications. G3AM also believed that now is the right time to take the lead in international standards as the AAM industry ecosystem is just being formed.

Geum-sik Yoo, Vice Chairman of G3AM and Deputy Director of IAM Business Division at Korea Airports Corporation, said: “The core standards for complex AAM are information sharing system; traffic management and operation control; essential navigation performance for performance-based navigation; communication navigation surveillance and vertical takeoff and landing aerodrome (vertiport). ), etc., infrastructure; surveillance information verification, etc. were selected.”

On 18th and 19th September 2024, industry and Defence in the Land Equipment sector will meet at UTAC Millbrook for two days of coordinated engagement through informal discussions, briefings, demonstrations and displays. Jointly sponsored by Defence Equipment & Support (Land Equipment) and Army Headquarters, DVD2024 will provide opportunities for industry and key MOD stakeholders to discuss ‘Battle Winning Ideas’, resilience and collaboration, delivering increased capability and the ability to exploit innovation.

DVD is a biennial Defence industry exhibition that enables focussed engagement between Defence industry, DE&S Delivery Teams, Army Headquarters staff and other Defence community users of Land Equipment.

The Land Operating Concept (LOpC) will see the Army fight differently – the find/fires revolution and significant SDE chain shortening mean we can’t continue as-is. Aerospace as a profession and passion: on the weekend of 7 to 9 June ILA Berlin offers interested visitors access to an industry which in Europe is virtually unique in standing for innovation, new technology and sustainability. This is the first time the TALENT HUB is taking place, which brings talented people of all ages and backgrounds together with employers. Information for visitors can be found here.

The Talent Hub features over 40 exhibitors from every part of the industry, from SMEs to multinationals, who will be inviting interested visitors to meet and get to know each other – often the first step to signing a new employment contract. The event targets a wide audience, including students of all ages, young professionals, people from other industries and aerospace fans.

The Talent Hub opens on Talent Day (Friday, 7 June) at 11 a.m. The same day, Talent Tours for over 600 students of all ages will be taking place with an opportunity to meet exhibitors’ HR staff.

Also kicking off will be the program of stage events with a wide range of information and entertainment until the close of the fair on Sunday. The UK Space Agency will fund 15 projects across the UK designed to engage and inspire the next generation into STEM careers.

The UK Space Agency has awarded funding to 15 projects across the UK designed to engage young people from all backgrounds and inspire the next generation into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers.

The Agency’s Space for All fund aims to inspire young people to pursue STEM education and attract talent to the UK space sector.

Just over a £1m will go to programmes in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Space for All is part of the UK Space Agency’s £12 million Inspiration programme which delivers multiple long-lasting interventions and opportunities across the UK, engaging with parents, teachers, club leaders, and role models, as well as young people themselves.

Designed for Key Stage 3-4 and Key Stage 4-5 students, the activities will be free to access by anyone.

It will include community projects and activities co-designed with and led by expert partners from Odd Eyes Theatre, scientists and employers in the space industry.

Space Explorers will give 9-11- year-olds from underserved or rural schools across North East England, prolonged engagement with Life Science Centre. This inspiring curriculum-linked programme aims to provide an in-depth exploration of space and the skills required to succeed in the expanding sector.

Orbyts creates inspirational, long-term partnerships between scientists and schools, providing students with relatable science role models while empowering them through their own original space research projects. A previous SFA grant enabled Oybyts to launch a thriving North-East hub, this grant will expand Orbyts into a self-sustained, UK-wide initiative.

The aim of this project is to respond to the space industry’s growing need for more professionals. This approach aims to inspire and increase awareness of space-related careers.

This project aims to develop the National Activity Centre at Inskip into a centre of excellence for exploring Air and Space topics through STEM activities. The project team hopes to turn their existing BTEC L2 in Space Studies into an interactive and exciting programme, to capture the imagination of the next generation of air and space-minded individuals, from all walks of life. The project team will create the learning space, ‘train the trainer’, ‘train the assessor’, and make the experiential learning element open to all Air Cadet Squadrons, nationally.

09 May 24. Senior Leaders Discuss Future of Special Warfare at Annual Convention. U.S. and allied country senior leaders discussed the roles that technology, relationships and additional topics play in developing special warfare teams for the future during a panel discussion Wednesday at the Special Operations Forces 2024 convention in Tampa, Florida.

The first half of the hourlong panel focused primarily on how special operations forces, or SOF, will not only adapt to modern military technology becoming more powerful, less expensive, and more globally available to both allies and adversaries around the world, but also how SOF will be able to best incorporate some of those technologies into future battle spaces.

“We have to think about how we evolve … and think about our legacy systems and platforms that served us very well in a certain operating environment that may or may not have utility going forward,” said Rear Adm. Keith Davids, commander of U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command.

Explaining how examples from Ukraine, the Black Sea and the Middle East demonstrate how small, technologically agile teams can challenge larger conventional forces, Davids said that technologies such as human-machine teaming enable SOF to mass effects without massing forces, creating asymmetric advantages.

On the topic of artificial intelligence, Davids said he believes it can enhance the ‘OODA loop’ (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act), particularly in the “decide” phase, thus enabling SOF to operate faster than our adversaries.

“I think decision advantage could be decisive going forward,” he said.

Another speaker on the panel explained that, while technology is no doubt going to continue developing in the future, the focus should be more on the people who are using it.

“Humans are more important than hardware, and that’s not something that’s going to change in the future,” said Command Sgt. Maj. JoAnn Naumann, senior enlisted leader for U.S. Army Special Operations Command.

Naumann added that, beginning with the small scale and then working to the large, it’s important to look at what availabilities are needed on a team.

“Because, while I don’t believe that technology itself will win or lose, I do believe that the people who best apply technology will win or lose.”

Along those lines, guest speaker Maj. Gen. Claudiu Dobocan, commander of Romania’s special operations forces command, said that despite his organization’s SOF technical innovation being in its infancy — the command was only recently established in 2018 — his personnel are still able to contribute to their country’s other combat forces by testing out new equipment such as night vision goggles, radios and new types of body armor.

“We’re kind of the test bed that permeates into the force; so, we’re proud of that,” he said.

Topics during the second half of the panel focused on the power of relationships and partnerships in the SOF community, as well as risk management.

Regarding the importance of maintaining good partnerships, Davids said that, in the era of strategic competition, the significance of partnerships has never been greater; especially during Phase Zero (an era of relative peace) when the military’s goal is deterrence.

” we think about the traditional partnerships we’ve had in the context of counterterrorism, they’ve been terrific,” he added.

Responding to the question about risk-taking, Naumann brought up the topic of sharing information.

“We can’t have our own silos of excellence. We have got to be able to partner seamlessly,” she said, adding that such sharing should be both internal with the joint force as well as with our foreign partners.

“That partnership has to be seamless. We have to be able to communicate … and we have to share until it hurts, because it is the only way we will win.”

Among the many aerospace exhibitions ILA is unique – not least because of its comprehensive and well-informed program of stage events. No other trade fair features so many topics, leading minds and such a wide range of content. From 5 to 9 June daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. four parallel stages will have all the latest on innovation, new technology and sustainability, with each stage providing a special focus.

On the ILA Aviation Future Lab stage one of the key topics will be how to achieve zero-emissions flight by 2050. The Future Lab is co-organized by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI). This is where to experience the green future of aviation, with topics including SAFs, alternative power sources such as hydrogen and batteries, optimized manufacturing using lightweight designs, and new materials and aerodynamics for minimizing CO2 emissions.

In the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) segment the focus will be on mobility in the third dimension. Transportation of urgent medical supplies, drone-assisted wind turbine maintenance and the use of drones for human rescue operations – UAF and eVTOL applications are opening up new possibilities in aviation. On the AAM STAGE experts representing companies, startups, science and research will be showing what Advanced Air Mobility has to offer.

On the ILA Defence Stage Forum Air representatives of politics, science, industry and the armed forces will discuss current military aviation topics. Taking as their slogan ‘Air power worldwide – Global Perspective / Regional Focus’, the German Bundeswehr and industry will be highlighting the necessity of an air force that defends peace, freedom and security not only at home but around the world and – considering the growing importance of outer space – even beyond. The ILA Defence Stage Forum Air features three separate topics on each day of the show: Central Europe, the Indo-Pacific and Global Perspective. The wide range of topics will cover air defence, drones, electronic warfare, logistics, exercises in the Indo-Pacific, future technologies, AI, space and sustainability.

The focus will also be on international cooperation, for example on the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), the European industry’s flagship defence policy project. In addition to developing a next-generation combat aircraft, the FCAS project also includes UAFs and an Air Combat Cloud. At the same time the stage program will look beyond European horizons, with high-ranking military members from the Asian-Pacific region expected to attend. Inspector of the Air Force Ingo Gerhartz, Deputy Inspector of the Air Force Lutz Kohlhaus, Deputy Inspector of Cyber and Information Space of the German Army Jürgen Setzer, BDLI President and CEO Airbus Defence and Space Dr. Michael Schöllhorn, and Deputy Director General of the European Defence Agency Andre Denk have also announced their attendance at the event.

One of the highlights at ILA is the Space Pavilion, which jointly features the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the European Space Agency (ESA), the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the German aerospace companies in the BDLI, and where the focus will be on how space missions benefit humanity. Data from space ensures comprehensive observation of climate activity and the weather conditions on our planet. Satellites enable the rapid exchange of large data volumes, supporting the digital transformation in the industry. Space sustainability conference kicks off with £1.8m for tech innovation. £1.8m from the UK Space Agency will boost British organisations with promising technologies to support space capabilities. New funding from the UK Space Agency is backing technologies to help satellites measure our changing shorelines, estimate levels of biomass, predict weather forecasting, and manufacture medicines in space.

The £1.8 m injection, divided across nine individual projects, rounds off the final phase of the Agency’s Enabling Technologies Programme (ETP), designed to give a boost to British organisations with promising technologies to support the delivery of new space capabilities.

The funding is being announced on the opening day of the UK’s first In-Orbit Servicing and Manufacturing (IOSM) conference on the Harwell Science Campus.

IOSM is a crucial emerging technology that supports space sustainability by enabling spacecraft to be repaired and adjusted during flight. It also opens new possibilities for building products that we need on Earth, such as semiconductors, much more efficiently in the microgravity environment.

Andrew Griffith MP, Minister for Space at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, said: “From more accurate weather forecasts to manufacturing medicines on a bigger scale, ambitious UK space teams from Strathclyde to Surrey are developing pioneering solutions in space to enhance our life on earth. This £1.8m government fund will grow our economy through new innovation while helping to keep space sustainable and deliver more key discoveries for many years to come.”

The IOSM conference is an opportunity for the UK sector to showcase initiatives that are making space activity more sustainable. The UK Space Agency will launch a new package of IOSM initiatives, including a funding call for the next phase of the UK’s national Active Debris Removal (ADR) mission, to derisk technologies developed in two mission studies led by Astroscale and ClearSpace.

The UK Space Agency is also backing new research studies on the size and health of the IOSM market and the UK’s current capabilities, and has awarded the University of Southampton a project to assess the potential impact of satellites burning up in Earth’s atmosphere, known as ablation. This follows the recent announcement of a £2 m upgrade to the Satellite Applications Catapult’s IOSM facility in Westcott, to support British companies with testing and demonstration of new innovations.

Enabling Technologies Programme (ETP)

The ETP projects announced today include work by the University of Derby to develop a material bonding method for use in the space environment, which could help assemble large space structures in orbit, and one by Messium to enhance algorithms and imagery required to estimate quantities of above ground organic matter, with a particular focus on wheat.

Another by the University of Northumbria in Newcastle will develop a personalised tourniquet system for astronaut blood flow exercises, while Frontier Space Technologies will take the next step in creating its SpaceLab, a miniature “lab in a box” capable of manufacturing high-value pharmaceuticals and science materials.

Dr Paul Bate, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said: “From using satellite observations to gain a clearer picture of the way our planet is changing, to using the in-orbit environment itself to develop vital tech products more efficiently, space is central to how we can plan for a safer and more sustainable future on Earth. For almost two years, our Enabling Technologies Programme has been empowering scientists and engineers in universities, companies and research institutes to advance the technologies of tomorrow, demonstrating the UK Space Agency’s commitment to harnessing the power of space to improve life for everybody.”

Launched in September 2022 in partnership with the UKRI Science and Technology Facilities Council, the £8.6 m programme has already supported 41 emerging and disruptive technologies that will drive growth in the UK space sector.

The Enabling Technologies Programme has now been incorporated into the National Space Innovation Programme (NSIP) and will be delivered as NSIP Kick Starter.

The projects

ARGANS (£250,000) – Global shorelines capability

An Earth observation satellite applications project, aiming to map global coastline trends, especially for regions of the world with limited geospatial information, enabling generation of accurate shorelines. Potential uses include climate change monitoring and coastal management planning.

University of Derby (£150,000) – ASTRIA computational study for manufacturing, assembly and materials

Application and development of a material bonding method (transient liquid phase diffusion bonding) in a space environment, which can be applied to concepts such as assembly of large space structures or vehicle re-entry.

Messium (£120,000) – Wheat biomass estimator

An Earth observation satellite applications project using research driven algorithms and hyperspectral imagery to estimate above ground biomass in a remote, cost-effective and scalable way.

Ultima Forma Ltd (£120,000) – Electroformed modular Q-band waveguide assemblies

In collaboration with Airbus Defence and Space, developing modular waveguides in Q&V-band by electroforming. Waveguides are key technologies in communications, directing energy in a particular direction. Electroforming involves “growing” metal via electrolytic transfer of ions, potentially delivering a cost-effective manufacture and development technique.

ICL (£250,000) – Space applications of nitrogen vacancy-in-diamond magnetometer

In partnership with University of Warwick, development of magnetometers using nitrogen vacancy centre in diamond, potentially offering a competitive alternative to traditional fluxgate sensors. Magnetometers are devices used to measure the magnetic field, with applications ranging from planetary science missions to weather forecasting here on Earth.

Surrey Space Centre, University of Surrey (£250,000) – Enabling ultra-low orbits: air breathing electric propulsion spacecraft

Development of a spacecraft platform capable of flying in extremely low altitude orbits, advancing the air breathing electric propulsion concept through propulsion testing, orbital mechanics simulation and aerodynamic analysis for use in Earth observation, telecommunications, and climate monitoring.

University of Northumbria at Newcastle (£140,000) – Personalised tourniquet system for spaceflight technology

Development of a personalised tourniquet system for spaceflight, a critical enabling technology for human spaceflight in low Earth orbit and beyond to perform a blood flow restriction exercise countermeasure in space.

University of Strathclyde (£250,000) – Tuneable radiation-resilient (AlGa)2O3 UVC photodetectors

Development and demonstration of suitability for space of a new type of semiconductor, providing an alternative to current Silicon-based UVC photodetectors.

Frontier Space Technologies Ltd (£250,000) – Fluidic, electrical connectivity, and biocompatibility upgrade studies for the SpaceLab microgravity laboratory

Development of the fluid transfer and biological material property testing of SpaceLab, a miniaturised, autonomous lab-in-a-box designed for in-orbit manufacturing of high-value products. Applications include pharmaceuticals, biosciences and material science.

07 May 24. ‘Power of Partnerships’ Is Focus of Special Operations Forces Convention. Senior leadership from U.S Special Operations Command today emphasized the significant role that partnership plays in accomplishing the mission of special operations forces during keynote remarks at the start of Special Operations Forces Week 2024 in Tampa, Florida.

While delivering a joint speech to roughly 3,000 convention attendees, Army Gen. Bryan P. Fenton and Army Command Sgt. Maj. Shane W. Shorter — Socom’s commander and senior enlisted leader, respectively — spoke about how global challenges require international SOF solutions.

“We often speak about the power of partnerships, and we want to double down on that today because this conference is the manifestation of the power of partnerships,” Fenton said.

Framing SOF Week as “a collision of differing perspectives crucial to solving intractable problems that our nations depend on special operations to solve,” Fenton and Shorter spent the early part of their remarks recapping Socom’s three priorities: people, win, and transform.

“People are our number one enterprise priority, and they are our comparative and competitive advantage,” Fenton said.

“And that team includes our partners — whether in our many courses in Joint Special Operations University or the 28 nations right in our headquarters, as well as the numerous SOF relationships we have around the globe.”

This year’s convention has 20,000 registrants attending from 75 countries.

As to the priority to win, Fenton said the global SOF team wins “today and tomorrow, through our people providing options for decision-makers and dilemmas to our adversaries.”

He added that the SOF community’s three missions of strategic competition, crisis response and counterterrorism are accomplished through the power of partnership.

Regarding the priority of transformation, Shorter credited Socom’s partnerships with academia, industry and the entire international SOF team with keeping Socom “at the cutting edge.”

“And, of course, there is tech,” he added. “Seabed to space, cyber to fiber, your Socom team — fueled by the power of partnerships — is all about people.”

While providing an overview of the current geopolitical landscape as viewed through the eyes of Socom, Fenton credited the international SOF community with helping form such an assessment.

“We see and sense more because of our partners,” he said. “And what I outline is a shared-sight picture.”

In laying out that picture, the two leaders made mention of global adversaries working to degrade the very partnerships that Fenton and Shorter spent much of their keynote remarks lauding.

“Our adversaries seek to divide and weaken the power of these partnerships, and to challenge us even more with their hardware and tactics,” Fenton said.

Additionally, Shorter said, the U.S. and its allies are seeing the character of war rapidly changing — with uncrewed robotics, ubiquitous surveillance tools, and artificial intelligence all working in concert to create a set of “wicked problems” that “defy simple solutions, require ongoing management, and have far-reaching global consequences.”

Spotlight: Artificial Intelligence

Despite such challenges, Fenton said Socom is rising to the occasion by “delivering asymmetric and asynchronous advantage and opportunities for our nation, across the globe, alongside our allies and our partners providing dilemmas and challenges for our adversaries.”

Prior to segueing into a question-and-answer session, the two senior leaders rounded out their prepared remarks by reemphasizing Socom’s commitment to robust partnerships.

“The foundation for Socom’s missions is our partnerships — forged by generational relationships and grounded in trust,” Fenton said.

Jointly sponsored by Socom and the Global SOF Foundation, SOF Week — which runs through May 10 — is “an annual conference for the international SOF community to learn, connect and honor its members,” according to the event’s official website.

02 May 24. African Maritime Forces Summit, Naval Infantry Leaders Symposium-Africa underway in Ghana. Governmental and military leaders from more than 40 countries on four continents have kicked off the second annual African Maritime Forces Summit (AMFS) and third Naval Infantry Leaders Symposium-Africa (NILS-A) in Accra, Ghana.

The three-day AMFS and NILS-A, combined this year for the first time, began on 30 April under the theme “Cooperation at Sea: Safeguarding African Maritime Security”.

The summit brings together over 100 delegates as well as international partners and experts.

Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his keynote address said Ghana is committed to playing a leading role in promoting maritime security in the region. He urged delegates to take decisive actions to combat piracy and transnational crimes and enhance regional cooperation with international partners to share intelligence and best practices.

Akufo-Addo said the blue economy holds enormous potential for coastal economies, but it faces threats in all forms which undermine economic gains and threaten human lives. “This potential is, however, constantly threatened by various maritime security challenges, including piracy, illegal fishing, smuggling, and maritime terrorism. These transnational crimes do not only threaten national and regional peace and security, but they also come at a great cost to the economies of both coastal and non-coastal states.”

Akufo-Addo said it is well known that the global maritime space, particularly the Gulf of Guinea, is a key route for international trade and connects all of the major continents. The current crisis in the Red Sea, and the re-routing of maritime traffic, he said, attest to the strategic importance of the western coast of Africa.

In the face of these challenges, he said it is imperative “we foster greater cooperation and collaboration amongst Africa maritime forces. By working together and sharing intelligence, and coordinating our efforts, we can address effectively maritime security threats and safeguard our maritime domain”.

Panel discussions during the conference include Strategies for Cooperation and Models for Combined Operations, The Spectrum of Maritime Action: At Sea and In the Littorals, Assessing Maritime Security Interventions, and Countering and Prosecuting Illicit Maritime Activity (From Piracy to IUUF).

In her opening remarks, US Ambassador Virginia Palmer said that, “here in West Africa, peacebuilding and security are never far from our minds. Ghana has been fortunate, so far, in avoiding violent extremist attacks. As you know, some of Ghana’s neighbours have not been so lucky. As His Excellency the President noted at the very beginning of his State of the Nation address earlier this year, ‘West Africa is under threat of terrorism and violent extremism,’ and that countries in this region can no longer take our territorial integrity for granted.’ These are indeed times in which the work and collaboration of everyone in this room is critical.”

She lauded Ghana for its role in regional peacekeeping and its contribution to United Nations peace operations – there are some 2 600 Ghanaian military and police personnel deployed to UN peacekeeping operations in Africa and the Middle East.

“The United States works closely with Ghana and many regional partners to build the capacity of security forces on and offshore,” the Ambassador said. “That includes technical trainings at the GAF [Ghana Armed Forces] Engineering School, maritime maintenance training at Naval Base Sekondi, and naval infrastructure projects at NAVTRAC [Naval Training Command]. It also includes equipment to build the capacity of the Ghana Navy, like the two 87 foot coastal security ships bolstering maritime security capacity in the Gulf of Guinea. We also provided $6m in additional equipment to the Special Boat Squadron and projects at NAVTRAC, part of the $28m in US security assistance to Ghana last year.”

In September last year, Ghana commissioned two 27 metre long Marine Protector class patrol vessels GNS Half Assini (P44) and GNS Aflao (P45) as well as two 12 metre Defender class Safe Boats 38 patrol boats provided by the United States.

“Our security cooperation, however, goes far beyond equipment,” Palmer continued. “It’s about building a long-term partnership, learning from each other, sharing best practices, and training together. Next month, Ghana will host and participate in multiple international military training exercises: Obangame Express, African Lion, and Flintlock.”

Palmer said this week is dedicated to African maritime security and cooperation, which are key elements of regional security. The summit comes at a critical time, she told delegates, as “our seas – especially the Gulf of Guinea – are bridges that connect us, and serve as channels for trade and shared prosperity. These waters, however, are also frontlines in our joint efforts to combat piracy, illegal fishing, and illicit trafficking — challenges that no single nation can effectively face alone. Our discussions and subsequent actions must lead to effective countering and prosecution of these activities.

“Our collaboration here in Accra is an opportunity to strengthen the ties that bind us across oceans and to reinforce our collective resolve to face maritime threats head-on,” she concluded.

US Naval Forces Africa hosted the inaugural AMFS in Cabo Verde in March 2023, while this is the third iteration of US Marine Corps Forces Africa (MARFORAF)’s NILS-A event.

“As host nation and a frequent participant in regional exercises and operations, Ghana’s Navy appreciates the importance of maritime collaboration. Through exercises like Obangame Express and Sea Lion, facilitating port visits from partner and ally nations, and bilateral and multilateral patrols in the Gulf of Guinea, the Ghana Navy has intimate knowledge of the exact subject material that AMFS/NILS-A covers,” the US Navy said.

“AMFS/NILS-A demonstrates how much solidarity the international community has in ensuring security and stability in our region. We are honored to host this critical initiative in 2024 as we take a leading role in ensuring freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce throughout the Gulf of Guinea and West Africa,” said Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, Chief of the Naval Staff of the Ghana Navy.

02 May 24. Call for Industry Support to DSF Collaborative Working Groups.

TD-Info Industry Members. Under the Defence Suppliers’ Forum (DSF) Capability Management, International & Innovation (CMII) – Innovation workstream, co-chaired by Anita Friend and myself, we have identified an opportunity to collaborate (MoD-Industry) on the direction of un-crewed systems technology development in the UK, which is about putting good ideas into practice for military advantage i.e. not just demonstrating good ideas.

The collaboration begins at the Problem Setting & Curation stage i.e. before requirements are set. At this stage, the commercialisation of potential solutions to problems must be considered, and there are 2 DSF Objectives (copied below) that the Innovation workstream will be addressing through the collaborative effort: one objective relates to Exportability, and the other relates to Intellectual Property Rights.

We will address these objectives through 2 pilot projects, one tackling Idea to Impact, and the other tackling Innovation in the Supply Chain, and both are linked. There are links to other MoD programmes (such as Defence Supply Chain Capability Programme, Integration Design Authority, Defence Design, UxS Strategy etc) so we are aiming to ensure those dots are connected.

To start the collaboration a joint working group needs to be established. In addition to addressing the DSF objectives the working groups will be shaping the downstream programme. As that shaping is to be done collaboratively, the level of effort is not exactly defined now but might involve 5-6 working groups over a 3-4 month period, as a first estimation.

The MoD points of contact for each project are Glenn Richardson (Idea to Impact) and Mark Darvill (Supply Chain Innovation). We are seeking industry representatives to join the working groups. For the Idea to Impact working group, industry representatives should have experience or knowledge of one or more of: un-crewed systems, supporting technologies, exports or intellectual property rights. Candidates should also have the support of their company to support the working group activities, which are otherwise unfunded. The working groups are collaborative and not a sales opportunity.

01 May 24. Finalists Brief Ideas to DoD Senior Leaders for Talent Management Innovation Challenge.

Launched in August 2023, the Department of Defense (DoD) 2040 Task Force (D2T) innovation challenge solicited ideas that elevate talent management with special consideration to recruiting, retaining, and promoting a diverse workforce. The challenge allows the DoD an opportunity to hear directly from Service members and civilians closest to the pain points and gain insights from their ingenuity, promising ideas, or innovative solutions to talent management challenges.

Over 200 innovative ideas poured in from each of the Services at all levels and globally. A team of subject matter experts reviewed and ranked the ideas to determine which should move on to the semi-final round.

Thirty-three ideas got the bid to move to the semi-final round, where their teams gave elevator-pitch-style presentations to a panel of Office of the Secretary of Defense subject matter experts and senior leaders.

Nine ideas were selected as finalists and winners. Ideas ran the gamut of the talent management space from equitable talent management using Artificial Intelligence, spousal support programs, upscaling workforce needs through 3rd party vendors, and competency development through gaming. On April 24th, finalist teams presented their innovative ideas in front of the Honorable Ashish Vazirani, performing the duties of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, and Ronald Keohane, assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs and other DoD Senior Executives.

“The Innovation Challenge contestants’ creativity, passion, and dedication to the Department and our nation are an important part of our combined efforts to carry out the National Defense Strategy and Secretary Austin’s priorities for the Department – defending our nation, taking care of our people, and succeeding through teamwork,” said Ashish S. Vazirani, performing the duties of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. “The Department’s greatest strength is our people, and efforts like this challenge will help us develop cultures where staff feel comfortable bringing forward solutions to the Department’s talent management pain points.”

Presenting in the final round is a “win” in itself, but the finalists and their ideas have also been matched with policy offices to further explore, support, and develop their ideas.

“These creative ideas don’t end today, the challenge ends, but the pathway continues,” said Ronald Keohane, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. “The longevity of the programs is what is really going to make the difference. The Department has various pathways for these ideas to become successful, and I’m excited to see what that will look like.”

Although only a handful of ideas made it to the end of the challenge, each idea submitted helped leadership understand talent management challenges and pain points, and each idea is the result of the energy and creativity of the dynamic people of the Department. DoD plans to use all the ideas submitted to better focus future talent management work across the Department in some capacity.

Berlin, 24 Apr. 2024: Be it the latest prototype of the Lilium eVTOL, the Do328 Uplift as a flying test bed for eco-friendly aviation technology, or the world’s largest airliner – from 5 to 9 June a comprehensive range of aircraft will be on display at ILA Berlin. Visitors can experience the fascination of flying both on the ground and in the air. Compared with ILA 2022 there is an increase in flying displays. Four 30-minute slots are scheduled daily for aerial shows, which are taking place parallel with flight operations at neighbouring BER Airport and offer the threefold ILA experience of innovation, new technology and sustainability.

Flying displays – experience high tech in the air

It is one of the world’s most effective and versatile fighter jets – and has been for the past 50 years. To mark its fiftieth anniversary, Airbus and the German Luftwaffe are presenting a Tornado in special colours which will debut at ILA Berlin in front of the general public – both on the ground and in the air. A Eurofighter, known for its agility and advanced avionics, will also be put through its paces in a flying display. Furthermore, an F-35 – one of the world’s most advanced fighter jets – will be in the air at ILA for the first time. With its stealth technology, it almost “ghosts“ through the sky. An A321 Airbus will also be demonstrating that airliners can fly tight and dynamic turns.

Another highlight will be a flypast of the Luftwaffe – with a Eurofighter, Tornado and A330 MRTT refuelling aircraft. Helicopters (NH-90, Eurocopter Tiger, Sikorsky CH-53), drones (Vector) and an ultra-lightweight electric Elektra Trainer are also part of the flying display programme.

ILA’s static display provides a first-hand experience of the fascination of flight. Emirates, which operates the world’s largest fleet of A380s, is presenting an A380 with four cabin classes on all five days at ILA Berlin. Thus Emirates’ flagship is the largest aircraft at the show. The A380 on display features a newly upgraded four-class cabin configuration, including first-class private suites and 76 modernised reclining seats in the business class on the upper deck, as well as the Emirates premium economy class in the forward section of the main deck. Outside of Dubai the aircraft is only being displayed with this luxury upgrade in Berlin.

Also on show at ILA is an Airbus A321XLR – the latest addition to the A320 neo range of single-aisle aircraft. The A321XLR has a range of 8,700 km – equivalent to 11 hours non-stop from London to Vancouver. Consuming 30 per cent less fuel per passenger compared with the previous generation of aircraft, and producing less nitrogen oxide (Nox) emissions and noise, the A321XLR makes an important contribution to sustainable aviation.

Airbus Helicopters is displaying its PioneerLab – its new twin-engined technology demonstrator based on the H145 platform which complements the Airbus FlightLabs. Its purpose is to test technology for reducing helicopter emissions, increasing flight range and integrating bio-based materials.

Among the military aviation innovations on display is the Grille. Dangerous situations are where the Avilus MEDEVAC drone excels, a revolutionary provider of emergency assistance which can accurately locate injured persons in inaccessible regions and supply first aid. As such it represents a novel approach to safeguarding service personnel.

The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer is at ILA for the first time and displaying its A29-Super Tucano – a light attack aircraft which is already in service in 16 countries. In contrast, the Boeing E-3A Sentry (AWACS) is an airborne early warning and control aircraft. With its distinctive fuselage-mounted rotating radar dome, it provides comprehensive surveillance, detection and communications for controlling and supporting airborne operations worldwide.

ILA is Europe’s largest aerospace show – which is why space flight is an indispensable part of the static display. Among the highlights on the open weekend will be an Airbus A310 Air Zero G. The aircraft features special equipment by Novespace from France and is employed by the German Aerospace Center. The pilots will perform an unusual manoeuvre by tracing a parabola-shaped flight path. Commencing in horizontal flight, the aircraft will climb steeply upwards, then throttle back its engines, with the remaining thrust pushing it first upwards and then “dropping“ it after reaching the parabola’s apex, thereby producing zero gravity for 22 seconds. This timespan is made use of by researchers to conduct experiments. The manoeuvre produces gravitational effects similar to those on the moon or Mars.

Other aircraft on the static display include UAVs (e.g. Elbit, AAI RQ-7 Shadow), drones (Eurodrone and Loyal Wingman by Airbus), helicopters (e.g. CH-53, NH-90, Eurocopter Tiger), transport aircraft (Airbus A400M, Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules, Boeing C-17 Globemaster III) and passenger aircraft (e.g. Bombardier Global 6000 Express).

16 Apr 24. National and International Leaders Participate in UNVEX’24.

UNVEX’24 has secured the participation of key national and international leaders in the drone industry in its conference programme, as reflected in the first Spotlight session on June 4.

The director of the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency, Patricia Pérez de Juan; the director of the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), Joachim Sucker; the director of Mossos d’Esquadra, Pere Ferrer; and the co-founder of the consulting firm Drone Industry Insight, Hendrik Bodecker, will each give a presentation on their respective projects and the impact they have on the sector.

This first Spotlight covers one of the cornerstones of this edition of UNVEX, which is more international representation, as well as the exposure of the different applications and thematic areas: Europe, regulation, national and regional players, industry and procurement.

This is supported not only at the Spotlight sessions, but also by the conferences in the four theatres, each dedicated to a market: Mobility, Security, Commercial and Technology Solutions.

These conferences will be attended by the European Directorates-General and Agencies in charge of Regulation, as well as those related to Innovation, prescribers and procurement departments, who will present at UNVEX the situation and prospects for the development of these systems, which are becoming increasingly important in security, inspection and transport tasks.

In addition to the more than 160 speakers who compose the conference programme, more than 60 national and international companies will be in Hall 1 of the Fira de Barcelona on 4 and 5 June, ranging from large companies in the sector to entrepreneurial projects.

The UNVEX programme of activities concludes with a session of drone and RPAS demonstrations, which will take place at Sabadell airport on the afternoon of Wednesday 5 June.

15 Apr 24. US, Indo-Pacific Army Leaders to Speak at LANPAC. Commanders from U.S. Army Pacific, U.S. Army Futures Command and the Japanese, South Korean and Australian armies are among the leaders scheduled to speak at the Association of the U.S. Army’s LANPAC Symposium and Exposition in Hawaii.

An international symposium dedicated to land forces in the Indo-Pacific, the three-day event is May 14–16 at the Sheraton Waikiki in Honolulu. It is expected to draw military leaders from more than 26 countries, including at least 15 army chiefs.

This year’s theme is “Campaigning with Landpower.” Topics that will be discussed include creating and maintaining joint interior lines, the evolving role of NCOs in the region, and multidomain operations for the Army, the joint force and industry.

There also will be almost 70 exhibits and a Leadership Forum for a select group of about 120 soldiers conducted by AUSA’s Center for Leadership.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has invited the drone community to join its 2024 Drone Safety Day on Saturday, April 27.

This nationwide event promotes safe drone operation, urging drone pilots and recreational flyers to “Fly RIGHT” by emphasizing five key safety principles:

All drones require registration, except those weighing 0.55 pounds or less (under 250 grams) operated under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations.

Remote ID enables a drone to transmit identification and location data during flight, which others can receive via a broadcast signal. Remote ID establishes the safety and security infrastructure required for advanced drone operations. Additionally, it aids the FAA, law enforcement, and other federal agencies in identifying the control station when a drone operates unsafely or in restricted areas.

Interact with others

The FAA recommends interacting with community-based organizations like the Academy of Model Aeronautics and engaging in online forums.

Gain knowledge

Drones can pose significant safety and security risks when operated improperly. Knowledgeable drone pilots with essential skills and training can decrease the risk to the national airspace. Learn about drone safety and rules at faa.gov/uas.

Have a safety plan

Don’t take drone flights for granted, and don’t get complacent. Be prepared for weather changes, approaching aircraft, or nearby individuals. Inspect your drone before and after flight to ensure it is in optimal condition. Obtain clearance to fly in controlled airspace.

TRUST and train

Recreational flyers are required by law to pass the TRUST test only once before flying. This free online test can be taken through any FAA-approved test administrator.

The UK and the Republic of Korea are forging ahead with plans for the next wave of global discussions on the safe development of Artificial Intelligence, with the AI Seoul Summit set for 21 and 22 May.

The summit will spearhead discussions on AI safety, addressing the potential capabilities of the most advanced AI models, building on the Bletchley Declaration and wider agreements which were reached at the AI Safety Summit in the UK last November, which included commitments from developers on AI safety.

Countries will also gather for talks on how the technology can be made more inclusive, ensuring the benefits and opportunities of AI are shared equally – and how attendees can further advance innovation. AI innovations have already helped to realise important breakthroughs in areas such as healthcare and drug discovery, and is being used to increasing effect in other settings such as education and tackling climate change.

Day one of the AI Seoul Summit will see a virtual leaders’ session co-chaired by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Republic of Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol. A select number of global industry leaders will also be invited, to update on how they are fulfilling the commitments made at Bletchley Park to ensure the safety of their models. This comes ahead of an in-person meeting of Digital Ministers on the second day, which is co-hosted by UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan, and Korean Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-Ho.

Next month’s summit continues the legacy of the Bletchley Park discussions, capitalising on its momentum to once again bring international governments, AI companies, academia, and civil society together to advance the global AI safety agenda. This next round of talks comes at a critical time for the technology, with increasingly capable and advanced AI models expected to be released over the course of 2024.

UK Science, Innovation, and Technology Secretary, Michelle Donelan said: “The summit we held at Bletchley Park in November was a generational moment. We agreed the historic Bletchley Declaration and have ensured discussions around AI safely are firmly on the international agenda. Innovation is a particular focus for the UK’s overall approach to AI, with projects such as the Manchester Prize marking a decade-long commitment of £1 million every year by the government to tap into the technology and advance solutions to pressing challenges such as climate change and energy efficiency.

The UK continues to drive forward international collaboration on AI safety through the AI Safety Institute – the world’s first state-backed body dedicated to AI safety. The Institute has already published a detailed approach to model safety evaluations, rapidly expanded its researcher ranks, and earlier this month put pen to paper on an historic agreement with the United States on AI safety.

The AI Seoul Summit will be accompanied by the release of the first iteration of the International Scientific Report on Advanced AI Safety – a key commitment from the Bletchley Park Summit which is being independently led by Turing Prize winner Yoshua Bengio and brings together the best existing scientific research on AI safety from across the globe. The international expert review panel for the report includes representatives from the UK, the Republic of Korea, and other leading AI nations.

The UK will continue to work closely with international governments, AI companies and civil society, to ensure people across the globe can safely realise the transformative benefits of AI to unlock new opportunities, transform productivity and public services, and power economic growth.

The virtual Leaders’ session on day one ‘Building upon the AI Safety Summit: towards an Innovative and Inclusive Future’ will deepen the consensus on AI safety while also focusing on broader aspects of global AI governance around innovation and inclusivity.

Talks on day two will be held in Seoul, and ministers will discuss ways to ensure AI safety and explore ways to foster the sustainable development of AI.

The AI Seoul Summit is the latest international summit on AI safety, kickstarted at Bletchley Park last November and continuing with a further planned summit in France over the next 12 months.

Ahead of the AI Seoul Summit the UK has appointed Imran Shafi, Director of AI Policy at the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology, and Henry De Zoete, the Prime Minister’s adviser on Artificial Intelligence, to spearhead preparations. Approaches to AI should complement a country’s existing strengths, which is why the UK has cemented its regulatory approach in the wake of the discussions at Bletchley Park. Purpose

SOFWERX, in collaboration with USSOCOM Program Executive Office Special Operation Forces – Warrior (PEO-SW) will host the Day and Night Heads Up Display (DANHUD) Assessment Event (AE) to identify solutions to enhance operator capability and situational awareness in both day and night conditions and decrease white-light self-illumination risk.

Background/Synopsis

With the rapid advancements in both Augmented Reality (AR) and plug-ins that provide additional capability to the Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK), USSOCOM operators require a device that can display a wide variety of information without requiring the operator to look down at the End User Device (EUD) display on their chest. Such a device is expected to take the form of a look-through Heads-Up-Display (HUD) that would either mount onto the operator’s helmet or be integrated into ballistic eye wear, allowing for seamless heads-up operation. Because ATAK and future AR initiatives provide capability in both day and night conditions, this HUD device needs to be capable of being bright enough to be seen in sunlight, but also be used in conjunction with an operator’s Night Vision Goggles (NVG). Thus, the name for this device – Day And Night Heads-Up-Display (DANHUD).

Additionally, the operator must be able to quickly and easily change the type and number of battery cells powering their NVGs and the DANHUD system via a Modular Smart Battery Pack, allowing flexibility/adaptability in degraded logistics situations.

Objective

The objective is to discover and develop a HUD system (including a Modular Smart Battery Pack) that is capable of working both ‘stand-alone’ in daylight conditions and in conjunction with currently issued NVGs and future Advanced NVGs (such as the L3Harris Fusion Binocular (F-BINO) or Fused Panoramic NVG (F-PANO)) with integrated cameras/displays for night operation. Additionally, the HUD system needs to be able to receive data from an EUD-operating ATAK and be capable of powering and interfacing with helmet-mounted directional laser warning devices. The solutions provider(s) shall create an Interface Control Document (ICD) that allows ‘plug-and-play’ upgrades to the DANHUD system in the future. They should also expect to collaborate with USSOCOM operators to refine operator touch points and functionality throughout the development of the system.

Potential solutions providers should propose to each individual area (DANHUD Display Hardware, Modular Smart Battery Pack, and/or DANHUD Display Software) separately if they wish propose against more than one area. Potential solutions providers should be prepared to work collaboratively with other companies.

Why You Should Participate

USSOCOM seeks to enter into non-FAR or FAR-based agreements with Industry, Academic, and National Lab partners whose solutions are favorably evaluated by PEO-SW Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). As such, the follow-on Assessment Event (AE) is considered competitive, and solutions will be evaluated independently of one another primarily for technical merit. This serves dually as notification of the intent to research the feasibility of an agreement under 10 U.S. Code, Section 4022 and/or Section 4022(f), and as notice of pre-solicitation activities IAW FAR 5.204.

Event Timeline

Phase 1 – 09 April 2024 to 22 May 2024 Submissions to the Assessment Event (AE) Open: Interested respondents who could potentially provide solutions that meet the needs of USSOCOM are encouraged to submit their capability for USSOCOM review. Phase 2 – 23 May 2024 to 03 June 2024 Downselect: USSOCOM will downselect those respondents/submissions they feel have the highest potential to satisfy their technology needs. Favorably evaluated submissions will receive an invitation to attend the AE on/around 04 June.

Phase 3 – 25 June 2024 to 27 June 2024 Assessment Event (AE): During the AE, selected participants will be allotted a one-on-one session with the USSOCOM evaluation panel to pitch, demonstrate, and/or discuss their solutions. The forum will include a Q&A portion and discussions may continue outside of the event. Solution brief presentation guidelines will be outlined in the event invitation and solutions will be assessed according to the criteria in the link provided below. If the USSOCOM evaluation panel favorably evaluates a solution brief, negotiations for Phase 4 may immediately begin.

This event will be held in person at SOFWERX but will have a virtual component.

Business to business research and development agreement as a sub-award through the SOFWERX Partnership Intermediary Agreement (PIA) (15 U.S. Code Section 3715)

o An award under 10 U. S. Code, Section 4022 may result in the further award of a follow-on production agreement without additional competition based on successful prototype completion. Partners sign framework agreement for staging ILA

At today’s joint cabinet meeting of the Senate of Berlin and the government of the State of Brandenburg the two states concluded a framework agreement for staging ILA Berlin from 2026 to 2030. The signatories to the agreement were the Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises Franziska Giffey, the Minister for Economics, Employment and Energy Dr. Jörg Steinbach, the CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH Aletta von Massenbach, the CEO of Messe Berlin Dr. Mario Tobias, and the member of the board of the German Aerospace Industries Association Martin Kroell.

Since 1992, ILA has been held at Schönefeld Airport and since 2012 at the Berlin-ExpoCenter-Airport site in the Schönefeld district of Selchow, on the grounds of Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). With today’s signing of the new ILA framework agreement for 2026 to 2030, the parties underlined the aerospace trade fair’s importance and secured the staging of ILA in Berlin/Brandenburg until 2030.

As Europe’s leading innovative trade fair for the aerospace industry, ILA showcases the future of aviation. Every two years it gathers figures from the international industry, politics, the armed forces, research and science at BER Airport for a dialogue on innovation, new technology and sustainability. On the Open Weekend it gives the wider public the opportunity of a first-hand experience of the latest aerospace trends.

08 Apr 24. Hundreds of local students experience their first taste of the aviation industry showing the sky’s the limit. The innovative aircraft supply and support organisation, Affinity Flying Training Services (Affinity) has teamed up for another year with the Air and Space Institute (ASI) to deliver a series of workshops for young, aspiring aviation enthusiasts. The sessions were tailored to give students support and direction, offering opportunities for young people with interests in aeronautics to speak with experts in the aviation industry and learn about exciting career pathways. Affinity, most known for being a trusted provider of aircraft supply and maintenance services for the first stages of the UK Military Flying Training System, has played a vital role to date in encouraging young people to pursue careers in aviation. Operating across the UK from RAF Barkston Heath, RAF Cranwell and RAF Valley, the company makes significant contributions to the UK’s military aviation sector. Affinity and ASI launched the series of workshops at the start of the year for students who are currently studying on their L3 pilot and aviation operations and L3 aircraft engineering programmes. The sessions provided invaluable insight for the students, who were able to meet with representatives from Affinity who shared their knowledge and experiences. The workshops experienced high levels of engagement from both the students and industry experts, offering the opportunity for Affinity to contribute to helping develop the next generation of aviation experts. Across all sessions there were large levels of participation, with approximately 60-80 students attending the first event at Newark College. The following 4 sessions took place at the Affinity premises at RAF Cranwell. The sessions included a CV workshop run by the Affinity HR team which gave the students guidance on how to craft a standout CV. The students then had the opportunity to hear the stories and ask career and industry specific questions from key members of the Affinity team including members of the Engineering, Delivery, Continuing Airworthiness Management, and Aviation Safety teams. After the series of speeches, the students took a tour of the aircraft hangar and offices, where they saw first-hand Affinity’s operations, learned a bit more about the aircraft Affinity service, and even got to view the cockpit of one of the Phenoms!

Speaking on the recent workshops, Ross Tarnowski, Assistant Principal Air & Space Institute and Engineering, Lincoln College Group, said: “The recent workshops for our ASI students clearly demonstrate the value of a strong industry partnership through working with Affinity. For our students to be able to gain invaluable, first-hand experience of the aviation sector linked to their current studies provides a real opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills and behaviours required in industry. The visits were excellent, giving a great insight to what Affinity do on a day-to-day basis. 08 Apr 24. FOSAA, new amphibious aviation conference, makes a splash. The organisers, Quaynote Communications and Arena Group, of the debut Future Opportunities for Seaplanes and Amphibious Aviation (FOSAA) are marking its first successful event with proverbial water cannons following the meeting of industry stakeholders in Venice on 20 March. The inaugural event confirmed the pent-up demand for an industry conference devoted to the resurging seaplane and amphibious aviation sector, as it attracted commercial stakeholders from across the industry and the world. The one-day event welcomed delegates from Asia, Europe and the USA, bringing together the burgeoning industry under one roof in a dedicated environment. Clear themes emerged through the moderated panels, presentations and discussions as sector entrepreneurs and experts demonstrated a determination to bring amphibious aviation out of the aerospace shadows and into the mainstream sector. With ten prospective OEMs in the room, the potential delivered by new propulsion technology, composite materials, innovative aerospace design and the sustainable imperative was palpable, with a general agreement that moving forward together through collaboration would generate continuity and longevity. A call for standardization in terms of global operations, passenger expectations, regulations and infrastructure requirements was also debated throughout the meeting. Education of industry regulators, investors, and mainstream aerospace colleagues was deemed essential to change the mindset that understands the sector to be a niche industry. Representatives from aerial firefighting, commuter, experiential and tourist operations, medevac, and regional and business aviation were in attendance, confirming some of the multiple applications the sector currently serves. The event also highlighted the opportunities presented by new and emerging markets that would optimize the benefits of sustainable amphibious airframes, welcome the associated economic stimulation and create as-yet-untapped prospects.

The first event was oversubscribed, with delegates demonstrating their enthusiasm and engagement through consistent panel questions, lively networking and interest in the next outing of FOSAA, as the event has been officially named. The seeds for an industry association were sewn, orders were announced, and a new annual aviation conference is set to join the industry calendar with organizers already discussing next year’s location. “We are delighted with the response; it is even better than we could have hoped, and we have already had sponsorship requests, speaking and presentation opportunities for 2025. 03 Apr 24. Bigger, more international and more diverse – ILA Berlin 2024 reaches for new horizons.

Around 90 per cent of the display area already booked
Significant increase in international exhibitors
Experience aircraft on the ground and in the air

Every ILA segment is experiencing high demand – be it Aviation, Space, Defence & Support, Suppliers, Advanced Air Mobility or the ILA Talent Hub, with a total of around 600 exhibitors from 30 countries expected to attend. In addition to exhibitors such as Airbus, Deutsche Aircraft, the Bundeswehr, German Aerospace Center (DLR) and European Space Agency (ESA), numerous companies are at ILA for the first time or back after a long break. They include Honeywell Aerospace Technologies from the US, Bombardier from Canada and Embraer from Brazil.

This year there is a special focus on startups. Among them are the world’s leading aerospace and defence accelerator Starburst as well as brigkAIR – an incubator specialising in mobility of the third dimension. The Munich-based company Rivada Space Networks is also expected to attend. It aims to launch a constellation of 600 highly secure and laser-networked satellites into space to provide companies and governments with an independent ultra-fast data web.

Aerospace innovations from around the world

At around 35 per cent, the proportion of international exhibitors at ILA has risen compared with 2022. Exhibitors from the US, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Romania, Italy, Poland and Ukraine are showcasing their innovations on a total of 20 joint stands. This is the first time that Finland, a new member of NATO, is hosting its own pavilion. The Association of the Finnish Defence and Aerospace Industries (AFDA) is represented here together with companies such as OKU, a supplier of mechanical precision parts, the cybersecurity specialist Insta, as well as KT Shelter – which specialises in mobile shelters for helicopters, fighter jets and drones. Israel is also strongly represented with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Rafael and Elbit. German federal states are also taking part. Berlin, Brandenburg, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony and Saxony are displaying their aerospace innovations on joint stands.

Aircraft at ILA 2024

ILA Berlin 2024 is presenting a comprehensive range of aircraft, including drones, transport helicopters as well as commercial airliners. There are more flying displays than at ILA 2022, with four slots scheduled daily to take place parallel with flight operations at neighbouring BER Airport.

The Static Display is where visitors can experience innovation and new technology for a more sustainable future first-hand. One of the highlights is the Do328 Uplift, which the German Aerospace Center is presenting to the general public for the first time and which is on view at the ILA Plaza at the centre of the exhibition grounds at BER. The Do328 is being used as an airborne test bed to investigate eco-friendly aviation technology including synthetic fuels and hydrogen as possible SAFs of the future. The flying laboratory is intended to be used by the industry, SMEs, startups and research facilities to test new climate-friendly systems, fuel technologies and propulsion systems under real-life conditions and to accelerate their introduction onto the aviation market.

With the ultra-lightweight Elektra Trainer from Elektra Solar the focus is also on innovative propulsion systems. A limited-production run of the first ultra-lightweight electric aeroplane to be type-approved in Germany is already under way. Its maximum range is around 300 km, which means that travelling across Europe by electric aircraft with only a few stops is possible already.

A wide range of military aircraft is also on display at ILA Berlin. Lockheed Martin is represented with its F-35 multirole stealth fighter. A Tornado and Eurofighter, mainstays of NATO’s air policing missions to defend the alliance, are also on display, along with an A400M transporter aircraft and CH-53 and NH-90 helicopters. Unmanned aerial vehicles including MIRA, a hypersonic drone, and the GRILLE rescue and evacuation drone are also on view. And this is just the start. Over the coming weeks there will be confirmation of further aircraft which visitors can experience at ILA both on the ground and in the air.

ILA Berlin is open to trade visitors from 5 to 7 June and to the general public on the weekend of 8 and 9 June from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On 7 June, the Talent Hub is bringing specialists and employers together on the stands at ILA, giving a new boost to companies and careers.
