23 Oct 20. HENSOLDT to host the autumn symposium of the “Förderkreis Heer” in Heidenheim. Presentations, technology demonstrations and a site visit are the focus of the two-day event. Sensor solutions provider HENSOLDT, together with the Förderkreis Deutsches Heer (FKH) is hosting this year’s FKH Autumn Symposium, which will take place in Heidenheim on 23 and 24 October. The two-day event brings together representatives from politics, industry, research and the military to exchange views on current trends and technologies in defence technology.
The symposium includes a variety of technical presentations in which experts provide insights into various aspects of modern defence systems. Among other things, the future of network-enabled warfare, the further development of sensor and reconnaissance technologies, and innovative approaches to improving the protection and defence systems used in the land domain will be discussed. The presentations will provide an opportunity for detailed analysis and a professional exchange of ideas on current challenges and solutions. At the autumn symposium, HENSOLDT will also be presenting the latest generation of optronics systems and thermal imagers for the Leopard 2, PUMA and Boxer RCT30 tanks.
A key element of the event is the field demonstration of the Military Utility Vehicle (MUV). This demonstrates innovative reconnaissance capabilities through the integration of land-based networked sensors. During a field demonstration, the MUV can detect camouflaged combat vehicles using machine learning algorithms and transmit the information in real time to a networked command and control information system. Equipped with an AI-based reconnaissance assistant, the MUV also supports command and control by passing targets between the vehicle’s workstations. Networked sensors such as laser warners and optronics enable automatic threat detection, making the MUV a crucial component of modern combat operations.
Participants will also be able to experience HENSOLDT’s target optics in action at a specially designed firing range. These optics, which impress with their high precision and reliability, are part of the modern equipment that HENSOLDT already supplies for military and security applications, such as the ‘Infantryman of the Future’ system (german: Infanterist der Zukunft, short: IDZ) for the German Army.
In addition to the technical presentations, the participants of the autumn symposium will have the opportunity to visit the HENSOLDT site in Oberkochen. The modern site reflects the company’s continuous investment in research and development. The site is working on innovative solutions that will help shape the defence technology of the future.

20 Oct 24. Israel to take legal action against Macron over naval trade show ban. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on Sunday he had ordered his ministry to start legal proceedings against French President Emmanuel Macron after Paris banned Israeli firms from participating in an upcoming military naval trade show.
The decision to bar Israeli firms is the latest incident in a row fuelled by the Macron government’s unease over Israel’s conduct in the wars in Gaza and Lebanon.
Euronaval, organiser of the Nov. 4-7 event in Paris, said in a statement last week that the French government had informed it that Israeli delegations were not allowed to exhibit stands or show equipment, but could attend the trade show. The decision affected seven firms, it said.
“I have instructed the Foreign Ministry to take legal and diplomatic action against French President … decision to prevent Israeli companies from showcasing their products at the @SalonEuronaval exhibition in Paris next month,” Katz said in a statement on social platform X.

21 Oct 24. Sea Power for Africa Symposium 2024 wraps up with key outcomes and a declaration of intent. Fifteen African countries, including host South Africa, committed to a Sea Power for Africa Symposium (SPAS) Declaration of Intent during last week’s continental maritime summit in Cape Town.
The symposium, said by SA Navy (SAN) Public Relations to be the fifth of its kind, wrapped up business with nine “key outcomes” and a call to action by SA Navy Chief, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese.
Topping the “key outcomes” list is strengthened regional collaboration, explained partially by a need to break down barriers to inter-naval co-operation, share maritime domain awareness information and conduct regular joint maritime exercises. Another is accelerating implementation of the AIMS (African Integrated Maritime Strategy) 2050 by way of joint maritime patrols, “reinforcing information sharing between maritime domain awareness centres (MDACs)” as well as starting conceptualisation of the Combined Exclusive Maritime Zone of Africa (CEMZA).
An SA Navy post-symposium statement has it “Chiefs of navies from across Africa embraced Lobese’s call for unity encapsulated in the concept of Sisonke (‘together’ in isiXhosa)”. The emphasis on “together” stresses “a collective resolve among African naval forces to enhance collaboration in addressing maritime security challenges”. This is to be taken further by way of regional governance which will see an African Union (AU) maritime sub-committee to implement key maritime security initiatives. Another team will be set up to formulate the implementation of AIMS 2050 which, when complete, will be presented to Chiefs and Heads of African Navies.
Other outcomes adopted included support for the Lomé Charter (the African Charter on Maritime Security and Safety and Development); “prioritising engagement between African navies and African defence industries in naval acquisitions”; and future Sea Power for Africa symposia to be held every two years with Nigeria to host the 2026 iteration.
Country Declaration of Intent signatories listed by SAN Public Relations are Algeria, Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Togo.
The call to action was Lobese’s fare thee well to symposium delegates with him urging them to “immediately return home and put the plans discussed into practice”.
