09 Oct 25. EURONAVAL is organizing an international conference with the participation of NATO experts on November 5, 2025, in Brussels. EURONAVAL, the world’s largest event dedicated to naval defence and maritime security, has announced that it will be organising a new conference with the participation of NATO experts on 5 November 2025 at the Square Brussels Convention Centre. Entitled « Evolving NATO’s digital ocean to improve maritime capabilities – Perspectives on quantum logic and trusted intelligence to enable decision superiority » this international meeting will be the first in a series of preparatory events for EURONAVAL 2026, which will be held from 3 to 6 November 2026 at Paris-Nord Villepinte. It is part of the development of the « outside the walls » formats initiated by EURONAVAL since 2023, with the quarterly EURONAVAL Talks webinars, which have been very successful.

The conference will focus on four main themes :

Strategic innovation (cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, real-time data exploitation and quantum technologies);
Partnerships and cooperation between NATO, industry and academia;
Sovereignty related to maritime data;
The forward-looking vision towards information superiority.

This one-day conference will bring together representatives from the highest institutional, political, industrial and academic bodies. In addition to the debates, there will be opportunities for networking (breaks, lunch, cocktail reception, etc.) to encourage discussion between participants.

22 Sep 25. Slovakia’s DRONTEX 2025 to host industry experts on October 15. On October 15, 2025, the fourth edition of the international drone conference DRONTEX 2025 will take place at the national cultural monument Elektrárňa Piešťany. The event, organized by the Mám Dron Association in cooperation with the Adapt Institute, will welcome professionals from government institutions, the private sector, academia, and drone technology enthusiasts not only from the V4 countries. The conference, moderated by Peter Novák, will be held in English, with the main theme focusing on security challenges connected to the use and misuse of unmanned technologies. Participants can also look forward to an exclusive bonus event – a live demonstration of an anti-drone system on the morning of October 16. DRONTEX is made possible thanks to the support of the International Visegrad Fund and institutional partners: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, the Regional Innovation and Development Agency (KIRA), and the Trnava Self-Governing Region.

What Participants Can Expect

Expert presentations will provide insights into current trends and challenges related to protecting European airspace, airborne threats and countermeasures, as well as showcasing technological innovations and development projects from domestic and international companies.

A new addition this year will be panel discussions moderated by Viliam Ostatník, who will engage with guests on the current state and predicted future of the drone ecosystem in the EU. During breaks, DRONTEX attendees will have the chance to discover inspiring drone-related projects through informal small talks with guest speakers. Throughout Elektrárňa Piešťany, visitors will be able to explore drone installations and partner booths. The evening program will feature informal networking and social activities.

On Thursday, October 16, at 9:30 AM, a live demonstration of the EnforceAir Plus system for detecting and neutralizing unmanned aerial systems will take place outside Hotel Park.

Event Agenda

The conference program begins on Wednesday, October 15, at 9:00 AM with opening remarks from Rastislav Sopko, representing the Mám Dron Association, and Radoslav Štefánek, State Secretary of the Ministry of Investment, Regional Development and Informatization of the Slovak Republic (MIRRI).

Block 1 – Future of Drones: Evolution or Revolution?

Speakers will reflect on how drones have transformed the use of airspace and its security. Presentations by Ľubomír Andrassy (Supreme Audit Office of Slovakia), Imrich Marton (strategic foresight expert), and Pavol Serbín (aviation information systems specialist) will be followed by a panel discussion featuring representatives from EASA and the Hungarian Institute for Defense Innovation Research.

Block 2 – Power of Innovation and Technological Breakthroughs

This session will highlight technological innovations driving rapid advances in unmanned system applications. Industry experts will discuss BVLOS operations (beyond visual line of sight), tethered drones, and methods for detecting rogue drones at mass events. The security focus will continue with a panel featuring former Minister of Defense Martin Sklenár and a representative from NATO.

Block 3 – From Battlefield to Lifesaving: The Evolving Role of Drones

This block will explore drone deployment in modern warfare and international conflicts. Military and dual-use UAV experts will be joined by panelists discussing drone applications in search and rescue (SAR) missions.

Block 4 – Secure and Transparent Skies

This session will feature Alida Štulajterová from Air Navigation Services of the Czech Republic, presenting an information campaign for drone pilots in the Czech Republic. Other speakers will address unmanned aviation safety from both hobbyist and professional perspectives. Networking will play an important role throughout the day, culminating in a dinner and social program starting at 8:00 PM.

Bonus for Attendees

Although the main program of DRONTEX 2025 takes place on October 15, organizers, together with a conference partner, have prepared a special live demonstration of an anti-drone system on October 16 at 9:30 AM at Hotel Park. Visitors will witness in real time how hostile drones are detected and learn about the methods used to neutralize them.

Space-Comm, Europe’s leading event organiser for the space industry, have confirmed plans for the biggest ever space industry event to be held in Scotland, with support from the UK Space Agency and Space Scotland, representing both the UK and Scottish Governments. Space-Comm Expo Scotland at SEC Glasgow 3-4 December will attract over 2,300 delegates, 100 speakers and 80 exhibitors with global leaders and influencers from government, aerospace, defence, business and academia. Plans for Space-Comm Expo Scotland were confirmed this week with the first wave of headline speakers, sponsors and exhibitors, to coincide with World Space Week 4-10 October. 06 Oct 25. Farnborough International Airshow 2026 Sells Out and Announces New Exhibition Hall. Farnborough International Airshow has expanded its 2026 exhibition footprint with the addition of a new hall, following selling out of space 12 months in advance of the event, breaking the previous sell-out record. With a brand-new, sixth hall and a boosted chalet offering, Farnborough International Airshow 2026 will be the largest event in the show’s 78-year history. It remains the most important international platform for the global aerospace, defence, and space industries, as well as adjacent sectors. Building upon its sold-out success from 2024, the 2026 airshow will continue to forge international collaboration and drive new cross-sector innovation advancements on a global level. The new hall will house additional exhibitor stands for the five-day event, taking place 20-24 July 2026. 11 Sep 25. Adelaide secures global undersea defence technology exposition. A major international defence and trade event will be hosted outside Europe for the first time in its 37-year history, with the Malinauskas Labor Government securing hosting rights in Adelaide for three years. Adelaide has been confirmed as the host city for Undersea Defence Technology (UDT), a globally recognised defence trade exposition. The event’s 2026 arrival marks the first time UDT will be staged in the Southern Hemisphere, reinforcing South Australia’s reputation as a world-class destination for defence and strategic innovation.

Held at the Adelaide Showgrounds in December 2026, UDT will bring together leading experts in undersea defence technology, government officials and military personnel from around the world and is expected to attract 2,000 delegates, with more than half from overseas.

Event organisers Clarion Events, which also run the world-renowned Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) events, has selected Adelaide as an ideal location for the event.

This is due to the city’s expertise in undersea defence innovation and as a key partner in the AUKUS alliance as the build location for the most significant industrial undertaking in the nation’s history in the SSN-AUKUS conventionally armed nuclear-powered submarines.

The event provides unparalleled networking opportunities, innovative conference content and incorporates the latest technologies in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced technologies in the underwater domain.

10 Sep 25. Nigeria to host inaugural Africa Defence Exhibition in 2026. Africa’s defence exhibition space will next year see a new addition to the calendar when Nigeria hosts AFRIDEX – the Africa Defence Exhibition – in Lagos. Set down for 26 to 29 October, AFRIDEX publicly debuted at August’s African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit 2025 in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. The exhibition will take place just over a month after the long running Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) closes its doors on exhibition number 13 at Air Force Base (AFB) Waterkloof in Centurion, South Africa, next year.

AFRIDEX will be co-hosted by DICON (Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria) and dmg Events, a specialist face-to-face events organisation with representation in nine countries. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two was signed by DICON Director General Major General BI Alaya and Nick Ornstein, representing the United Kingdom headquartered dmg Events during the African defence chiefs summit.

The Nigerian exhibition is, a DICON statement has it, set to become Africa’s premier defence and security platform, bringing together global leaders, innovators and policy makers to collaborate on strengthening security across the continent.

It continues: “The 2026 edition will be the largest defence and security exhibition in Africa, uniting military officials, government representatives and technology pioneers from across the globe. Designed to inspire collaboration and innovation, the exhibition will offer participants strategic insights, practical tools and opportunities to transform ideas into action. Both local and international defence companies will showcase their products and services, including armoured vehicles, aircraft, naval vessels, weapons, ammunition, drones and other advanced defence systems.”

AFRIDEX 2026 will, according to DICON, create opportunities for Nigerian and African defence manufacturers to exhibit capabilities, share knowledge and explore partnerships to drive critical development in the continent’s defence sector. Further, the exhibition will promote knowledge sharing, technology transfer and what is termed “the enhancement of Africa’s defence reputation and capabilities”.

World Defense Show (WDS), founded by the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) in Saudi Arabia, announced today from DSEI (Defence and Security Equipment International) 2025 that 96% of its total exhibition space has already been booked for its third edition. This remarkable demand, coupled with participation from a record 80 exhibiting countries – a significant increase from previous editions – clearly demonstrates the unparalleled global standing and international confidence WDS has attained within the defense industry.

The World Defense Show team was present at DSEI 2025, leveraging the opportunity to connect with industry leaders and share the unprecedented momentum building for World Defense Show 2026, taking place from February 8-12, 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“The overwhelming demand for exhibition space at WDS 2026, with three out of four halls already sold out, leaving only 4% of space available. This underscores the show’s rapid ascent as a pivotal global platform for the defense community,” said Andrew Pearcey, CEO of World Defense Show. “Our presence here at DSEI allows us to engage directly with key stakeholders and highlight how WDS is accelerating future-defining outcomes for the global defense community.”

World Defense Show 2026 is expected to welcome 925 exhibitors—marking a sharp rise from 773 in 2024. The United Kingdom continues to be a key participant for WDS, with a strong and growing presence at the 2026 show. Currently, 28 companies from the UK are confirmed to participate, with an expected increase to 35-40 as final confirmations are made, including companies participating with UKDSE. Top UK defense companies such as BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Draken, Systematic, and Rheinmetall UK are among the confirmed exhibitors. Notably, the UK Pavilion has seen an impressive 15% growth since 2024, reflecting the increasing strategic alignment between the UK defense sector and the opportunities presented by WDS and Saudi Vision 2030.

Under its 2026 theme, ‘The Future of Defense Integration,’ WDS is placing a strong emphasis on cutting-edge integrative technologies, with the Future Defense Lab serving as a cornerstone of this vision. This dedicated innovation engine will showcase new and emerging technologies across critical domains, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Unmanned Systems, Robotics, Autonomous Vehicles, Quantum Technologies, Cyber Security, Space-based Technology, and Advanced Materials. The IISS Prague Defence Summit will assemble government leaders, defence officials, senior industry representatives, analysts and media from the transatlantic community and beyond to discuss challenges and opportunities for European defence capability development. The Summit aims to translate wider policy goals into a specific implementation agenda focused on defence innovation, procurement and building the capabilities required to defend Europe.

Discussion at the 2025 Summit will focus on the development of a roadmap for the defence of Europe, the evolving transatlantic and European defence ecosystems, operational challenges related to deterring Russia, the role of external partners in generating European military capacity, and new approaches to funding defence.

A new IISS Strategic Dossier, ‘Progress and Shortfalls in Europe’s Defence: An Assessment’, reveals important steps required to strengthen Europe’s military readiness. Published before the IISS Prague Defence Summit 2025, the Dossier highlights the key issues as political, military and industry leaders prepare to debate how to meet new capability targets set for NATO allies.

It builds on the assessments made in the 2024 IISS publication, ‘Building Defence Capacity in Europe: An Assessment’. One year on, pressure has only increased on European decision-makers amid Russia’s continued military threat and now with uncertainty concerning the United States’ commitment to European security.

The dossier’s main findings are as follows:

Addressing Europe’s Key Military Hardware Gaps

Europe faces critical capability gaps, including insufficient intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), space launch –facilities and platforms, long-range strike weapons and rocket artillery.

Europe Struggles to Close Cloud and Software Gaps

Europe remains dependent on US firms for hyperscale cloud-computing capabilities, at a time when these systems are becoming increasingly important in future warfighting concepts. Europe’s edge cloud-computing capacity is stronger, and its command-and-control software is globally competitive, but gaps persist in high-capability datalinks critical to multi-domain operations.

Slow Progress in Building Europe’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD)

Europe lacks adequate IAMD capacity across almost the entire threat spectrum, with exo-atmospheric interception reliant on US assets. New systems are being introduced, but it is unclear how NATO’s ambition to quadruple air and missile defence across the Alliance can be achieved.

Gradual Shifts in European Defence Procurement and Industry

More European countries are prioritising procurement from domestic or European suppliers, but the proportion allocated differs across domains. 53% went to European systems, with approximately 36% being spent on US equipment, but the US still dominates in the aerospace realm. Legislative changes to accelerate procurement timelines are modest so far, but bolder efforts are under way to change how ministries of defence operate.

Europe Meets NATO Defence Goal but Risks Falling Behind Without Urgent Action

Spending in 2025 is more than 50% higher in nominal terms than in 2022. However, continued success is not guaranteed, and several European allies will struggle to meet NATO’s new funding targets. Sustained public and private investment, including venture-capital investment, long-term contracts and faster procurement decisions, will be important for success.

27 Aug 25. The September International Defence Industry Exhibition in Kielce promises to be one of the most important in the event’s history. From 2 to 5 September, Targi Kielce will host over eight hundred companies from thirty-four countries, including representatives of global defence corporations and the largest Polish companies in the sector. The exhibition halls will showcase the latest technological solutions that are just entering the market, and some of them will have their premiere in Kielce. The Polish Armaments Group, the strategic partner of the event, will premiere the Baobab serial mine-laying vehicle. The first serial production unit of the New Amphibious Infantry Fighting Vehicle Borsuk marks another and equally important debut. Borsuk is one of the most significant projects in the history of the Polish armaments industry, created based on domestic technical ideas and original design solutions. Another noteworthy novelty will be the premiere of the Heavy Infantry Fighting Vehicle model. In total, the Polish Armaments Group will present a dozen or so tracked and wheeled vehicles for various purposes at the Kielce exhibition. The RAF1 containerised photovoltaic power plant will also be unveiled, allowing for quick and independent power supply to military bases and posts in any terrain. Companies specialising in anti-drone systems, next-generation radars, modern camouflage systems, and robotic production processes for defence will also showcase their solutions. The premieres galore will also include residential modules for soldiers, which provide comfort and functionality in field conditions. The WB Group has announced a powerful presence, presenting its vision of a ‘multi-domain revolution’ at MSPO. The presentation will feature the new COMP@NZ programmable radio stations, the expansion of the Warmate drone family to include heavier combat variants, and the new X-FRONTER unmanned aerial vehicle. The group’s expo stands will display artificial intelligence systems for target recognition and classification, as well as Fonet and Topaz communication solutions, complemented by completely new hybrid vehicle concepts that can operate in both manned and unmanned modes. The announcement of the presentation of unmanned surface units intended for the Navy is particularly interesting as they are capable of carrying loitering munitions.

Numerous conferences and industry debates will also be an integral part of this year’s Expo. Experts, military, and industry representatives will meet on the stages located next to the exhibition. They come here to discuss the future of defence, the role of new technologies in the modernisation of the armed forces, as well as security in cyberspace and the development of unmanned capabilities. Panel sessions will serve as a forum for exchanging experiences and presenting analyses that may inform the direction of cooperation in the years to come. MSPO is not only about hardware premieres, but also a venue for high-level meetings and talks. The President of the Republic of Poland, who offered his auspices to the event, announces his visit to Kielce. MSPO will also host military and government delegations from around the world, including those from NATO and European Union countries, as well as from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The presence of defence ministers, chiefs of staff and high-ranking officers makes the fair a space for political and business dialogue. This is where issues of regional security, industrial cooperation, and specific purchasing projects are discussed.

As Andrzej Mochoń, President of Targi Kielce, emphasises, the Expo is increasingly going beyond the role of an exhibition and is becoming an event of strategic importance. – MSPO is the forum where industry meets defence policy. The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) announced that Jan Lipavský, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, will deliver the opening speech at the IISS Prague Defence Summit, taking place from Wednesday 3 – Friday 5 September 2025. Building on the success of the inaugural event in 2024, the IISS Prague Defence Summit will bring together government leaders, defence officials, senior industry representatives, analysts and media from across the transatlantic community and beyond to discuss the future of European defence capability development. The summit is designed to advance public debate while supporting practical steps toward implementation, particularly in the areas of defence innovation, procurement and industrial cooperation.  Discussion at the 2025 Summit will focus on the development of a roadmap for the defence of Europe, the evolving transatlantic and European defence ecosystems, operational challenges related to deterring Russia, the role of external partners in generating European military capacity, and new approaches to funding defence.

27 Aug 25. Visiting warships announced for DSEI UK 2025. DSEI UK will welcome a total of four international and Royal Navy ships this year, demonstrating the UK’s naval capabilities and how they are amplified through joint operations with allied partners. Not only will these warships offer attendees at the show the exclusive opportunity to see first-hand the latest advancements in maritime technologies and engage with those serving onboard, but visitors can also expect to see the return of waterborne demonstrations. The live demonstrations of manned and autonomous craft will take place twice a day, giving attendees the opportunity to see firsthand how the UK and its allies are responding to confront not only the challenges presented by emerging technologies, but to harness them to secure a competitive advantage at sea. Key waterborne demonstrations to look out for will be the L3Harris Shadow Fox high-speed, multi-purpose Autonomous Surface Vehicle, which is capable of operating beyond-line-of-sight for extended periods of time. Also from the UK, ACUA Ocean’s USV Pioneer provides the space, weight, and power to safely deploy senor and system payloads of up to 6.5 tonnes in up to 4m wave heights. Representing Latvia, VIC TEC will be showcasing its autonomous naval solutions that promise to enhance and support military operations through its unmanned surface vehicles equipped with torpedo launch and air defence systems.

With tensions rising across the world, the maritime domain has continued to be a critical arena for maintaining control and projecting influence in contested environments. This is especially evident today, with the UK Carrier Strike Group continuing on its eight-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific, demonstrating the UK’s commitment to allies in the region and highlighting the role of multilateral cooperation, such as the recently completed Exercise Talisman Sabre, in strengthening regional security and military interoperability.

HMS Iron Duke

HMS IRON DUKE is a Type 23 frigate of the Royal Navy. Versatile and adaptable, she plays a key role in protecting our nation’s interests, from policing vital trade routes to supporting humanitarian aid missions. The picture below shows Iron Duke escorting a Russian vessel through UK waters in July 2025 as part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the integrity of UK waters and protecting national security.

As well as taking part in Royal Navy warfighting exercises and working alongside fellow NATO nations, Iron Duke is also involved in regular patrols across Northern Europe and the Baltic, where her crew engages with regional forces and provides security at sea.

Also in July, the frigate participated in Exercise Sea Breeze – the annual maritime training exercise co-hosted by the US and Ukraine. Focused on mine countermeasures and subsea threats, the exercise is critical for sharing knowledge and techniques given Ukraine’s success at maintaining control and projecting dominance in the Black Sea.

Iron Dukes’ Commanding Officer is Commander David Armstrong RN, the Ship’s company – a crew of around 200 – is split into Warfare, Marine Engineering, Weapon Engineering, Logistics, Flight, and Executive. They’re specialists in their own areas, though all members of the crew are also trained in ‘whole ship duties’ including damage control, firefighting and first aid. Iron Duke also welcomes specialists, including linguists, intelligence analysts and a Royal Marines boarding team depending on the operation.

HMS Example

Based at HMS Calliope in Gateshead, HMS Example is one of 16 Archer-class patrol boats operating within the Royal Navy’s Coastal Forces Squadron.

Operated by a core crew of five sailors, HMS Example plays a key role in the training and skills development of Officer Cadets, the next generation of Royal Navy leadership. It is affiliated with HMS Dauntless, HMS Northumberland, No. 3 Flying Training School, Whitby, Durham School CCF, Newcastle RGS CCF, Sedbergh School CCF, and Northumberland District Sea Cadet Corps.

A regular participant in UK and NATO exercises and operations, over the last year, HMS Example has participated in multi-national NATO exercises in the Baltic Sea, an autonomous mine warfare tasking, amphibious operations on the west coast of Scotland and ceremonial services in France.

BNS Pollux

The sistership of BNS Castor – a DSEI 2023 visiting ship – BNS Pollux is part of the Belgian Navy’s contribution to the Belgian Coastguard Structure.

A Coastal Patrol Vessel (CPV), BNS Pollux serves primarily as a “Ready Duty Ship”, operating in tandem with BNS Castor to ensure that one ship is always available for patrol, surveillance, and intervention within Belgium’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). She can also be deployed in Europe.

BNS Pollux’s responsibilities are wide-ranging, and include non-NATO monitoring operations alongside other contributors to the Coastguard structure, conducting military maritime surveillance, fishery and customs inspection, anti-pollution operations, MARPOL inspections, and search and rescue operations at sea.

FGS Sachsen

FGS Sachsen is the first of the German Navy’s SACHSEN class of air-defence frigates. Commissioned in 2004, she is primarily tasked with protecting naval groups from air and missile threats.

Equipped with the advanced multifunction radar APAR and the long-range air surveillance radar SMART-L, FGS Sachsen was designed for an anti-air warfare role. With her Mk41 Vertical Launch System, she is able to provide three layers of air defence missiles (SM2, ESSM, RAM) in addition to a broad range of weaponry to engage targets in the air, at sea or on land.

Throughout her service life, FGS Sachsen has frequently been deployed in NATO missions and exercises. These include deployments with Standing NATO Maritime Group 1, Operation Atalanta off the coast of Somalia, Standing NATO Maritime Group 2, and the high-profile NATO exercise Trident Juncture.

In 2022, FGS Sachsen was involved in a bilateral interoperability exercise with the US and German Navies in the Baltic Sea, advancing operational manoeuvrability and reinforcing security and stability on NATO’s northern flank. Recently completing her training and work-up to operations, culminating in her successful participation at Operational Sea Training in Plymouth, FGS Sachsen is now ready for the full range of national or NATO deployments.

DSEI UK’s Senior Naval Advisor, Rear Admiral (ret) Jon Pentreath CB, OBE stated: “This year’s DSEI UK is particularly exciting about representation from the maritime domain. 04 Aug 25. The 17th International Defence Industry Fair hosted by the Turkish MoND, IDEF 2025, ran in Istanbul over six days in late July. Organised biennially by the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, IDEF is by far the largest defence expo in the Eurasian region and usually ranks in the top five of this type of international event. Since JOINT-FORCES was created in 2018 following the demise of the publishing house behind COMBAT & SURVIVAL Magazine, diary clashes plus COVID-19 travel restrictions prevented us covering this really interesting defence fair, but this year all the ducks lined up to allow me to attend the event for five out of six very interesting days. Türkiye, a NATO member since 1952, has close to half a m active duty military personnel, modernised armed forces and equipment, and a very extensive domestic defence manufacturing industry. The country, which bridges the continents of Europe and Asia, is both the guardian of the Alliance’s south-eastern flank and a major contributor to international peacekeeping operations. My first impression once eventually inside IDEF on Opening Day Tuesday was that over the five days available to me I was never going to be able to get around all eleven primary exhibitions halls plus the two extra halls and outdoor display at the nearby Atatürk Airport terminal site, not to mention the port area on the northern shore of the Sea of Marmara with its adjacent exhibition stands area. However I persevered and by Saturday afternoon, despite not yet being one hundred percent recovered from last year’s major health challenges, I had actually managed to get around all the halls and stands across all three Istanbul sites, though I simply didn’t have enough time to visit the linked WOW Convention Center with its additional exhibition stands. I have to admit that by the afternoon of Day 5 I was well and truly chinstrapped, with heatwave temperatures around 36-38°C most days not making things any easier, but I am really glad I didn’t wimp out because there were so many new things to see, photograph and discuss with manufacturers’ representatives. It goes without saying, bearing in mind how Russia’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine has so markedly changed the face of warfare over the last three and a half years, that drones and counter-drone systems were very much in the ascendancy in Istanbul; as they were at the major exhibitions in Abu Dhabi, Athens and Madrid I attended earlier this year. However as we have also seen in the Russia-Ukraine War, uncrewed and optionally crewed systems have not yet totally replaced conventional armour on the battlefield, especially as ground can still mostly only be held by physically putting boots upon it, so tracked and wheeled armour still featured heavily at the show. Turkish-produced vehicles have long been operationally deployed by Türkiye’s armed forces, but in recent years other NATO nations rearming to be prepared for any future Russian expansionism have been procuring Turkish systems in a way that would have been unthought of prior to the Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. It was interesting to see many of these in the metal, so to speak. (Source: joint-forces.com)

The Bremen Dialogue is becoming an established platform for discussing technological issues affecting the German Navy. KG and Abeking & Rasmussen Schiffs- und Yachtwerft SE have organised this expert event, which focuses on the navy. This year’s event centred on the main theme of “AI and Autonomy – The Future of Maritime Security”. The Bremen Dialogue is sponsored by the German Maritime Institute, which has dedicated this series of events to the topic of ‘Maritime Security and the Navy 2035+’. The Bremen Dialogue aims to promote strategic exchange between the German Armed Forces, industry, research and the Federal Ministry of Defence, with the goal of jointly identifying the German Navy’s specific capability requirements and developing them further with the aid of technology. Around 90 experts from the German Armed Forces, industry, research and ministries attended the dialogue, which focused on the impact that unmanned systems and artificial intelligence will have on the future tactical and operational command of maritime operations. Rheinmetall is a leading technology driver with concrete application scenarios in this area. These technologies are becoming increasingly important in the maritime context, especially in the face of hybrid threats. The war in Ukraine has revealed new and old threat scenarios, including sea mines in the Black Sea, drone attacks on supply ships and cyberattacks on port facilities. At this year’s meeting, hosted by TKMS Atlas Elektronik GmbH, Rheinmetall announced that it will take the lead in organising the 3rd Bremen Dialogue in 2026. The need to develop defence technology at a pace to match that of our enemies, at a time when complex threats are converging, is a key issue for the UK and its allies, as set out in the Strategic Defence Review. This has formed the basis of a discussion held between the UK MoD Minister for Procurement and Industry and defence technology experts including Qinetiq, Dell, 4GD and Capita Defence. The meeting was convened exclusively by DSEI UK for several businesses delivering high technology to the UK.

Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Rt Hon Maria Eagle MP said: “Threats around the world are changing fast and we will rely on the ingenuity of businesses of all sizes to take cutting-edge concepts from the drawing board to our Armed Forces on the frontline. 17 Jul 25. US Army Experts Discuss Vital Components of Multidomain Operations at LANDEURO. US Army experts stressed the importance of joint doctrine and technology for the U.S. military, NATO and its allies to successfully operate in multidomain operations during the 2025 LANDEURO Symposium in Wiesbaden, Germany, July 17, 2025.

“A strong United States military and a strong NATO is not just a European deterrent, but a global deterrent,” said Brig. Gen. Steven Carpenter, commander, 56th Theater Multi-Domain Command, Mainz-Kastel, Germany. “What we do in this theater of operations, it’s exportable anywhere. That should concern our adversaries.”

Communication among the U.S. military, NATO and its allies, along with the industrial base, is important, said Harald Manheim, head of defense digital, cyber and managing director, Airbus Defense and Space, Germany. Manheim served in the German Air Force with the MIM-104 Patriot air defense system.

“We need to know each other to create and build trust,” Manheim said. “It’s easier if you know each other, if you know the capabilities. It’s a fascinating world when you enter industrial sites and armament industry across the world. The Europeans are releasing more budgets. We’re ramping up. For those of you seeking jobs after your military careers, join us, because we need the best experts from artificial intelligence to mechanical engineering in the vast understanding of the customers.”

He said NATO and U.S. allies want to prepare the forces on the battlefield of today and tomorrow with the best technology and capabilities.

Carpenter said if conflict breaks out in Eastern Europe, everything will be contested globally.

“There’s not a single thing that 56 theater multidomain commands can do to stop anti-access area denial subsurface in the Western Atlantic,” he said. “Everything is contested. It’s not just the military. It’s not just the joint force across the different 32 nations and partners who join us. It’s commercial. It’s industry. It’s sparking the industrial base and understanding that in order to sustain ourselves to win the fight after the fight. We need commercial industry to assist us with that.”

He said it’s not just a military effort. It’s a national effort across all 32 nations and the partners who join the U.S. military.

Doctrine

Doctrine plays a big role in human and procedural interoperability in this military effort, said Richard Creed Jr., director, Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate, Mission Command Center of Excellence, Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, Kan. The West Point graduate served 32 years as an armor officer and strategist. Creed said because of this, his directorate is continuously updating U.S. Army doctrine that focuses on multidomain operations, combined arms, including space, cyber, electronic warfare, air defense and more. This, in turn, shapes the joint doctrine for the U.S. military and the NATO doctrine. The doctrines influence operations and training. And with the proliferation of technology at a faster and faster pace, the operational environment is changing, which influences doctrine, he said.

“We really started updating Army doctrine in 2014, thinking about how the Army is going to fight differently,” Creed said. “There was an initial multidomain battle concept and futures concept developed and socialized across the Army from top to bottom. We published the concept in 2018.”

He said as the concept develops into doctrine, the Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate worked with joint force experts to ensure the language was in a form people use every day in terms of training, developing leaders and in determining materiel requirements.

“If you don’t know how you’re going to fight, how do you know what you want to fight with?” Creed said.

Though the updated doctrine published in 2022, the war in Ukraine kicked off, and the Army, along with the other U.S. military service branches, NATO and its allies saw an evolution of warfare.

“The war in Ukraine evolved and other things were going on in the world. The Army was focused globally,” Creed said. “We published an updated version of FM30 March 2025 and since then, we’ve been taking notes and have realized that there’s even more things we need to change the next time around, and it will not take three years before we do it again.”

He said one of those steps is as NATO updates its doctrine, Creed’s team will emphasize the importance of the land forces portion being congruent with the Army’s operational concept.

“We work together and train together every day over here in Europe,” he said. “We have meetings all year, discussing how we’re going to fight better together. Let’s use the same words and make sure those words have the same meaning.”

Technology

Manheim said the current need on the battlefield is a bridge between existing systems to link them together for more of a multidomain, legacy world of systems.

“We also need to massively produce ammunition and upgrade legacy systems,” he said. “Software-defined defense may be the future vision. We need speed, interoperability and combat mass communications integrated across the alliance.”

Multidomain

Carpenter leads a theater asset that works with the other U.S. military services, NATO and coalition partners.

“As the multidomain command in Europe, we tackle some very complex problems,” he said. “Within the larger, global anti-access aerial denial effort, that’s defeating adversary integrated air missile defense as well as their integrated fires complex capabilities. It’s an extreme challenge.”

He said repetitive exercises oriented exclusively on warfighting and regional plans allow soldiers in his command to develop leadership, expertise and build the architecture needed to win the fight. It also helps them harvest theater and national intelligence, conduct target development, maintain custody of targets and work with interagency partners to layer effects for increased success.

“We need to find, fix and finish for the theater,” Carpenter said. “We establish convergence in depth. If we get it right, we create windows of opportunities for the Air Force from the ground, and we create opportunities for the alliance with follow-on operations to create an experience for our adversary that completely overwhelms them. Repetition breeds mastery.”

His command has many exercises, including Dynamic Front, a theater-wide kill web data execution with 16 different nations in five different countries.

Carpenter echoed Creed’s comment on the importance of the Army, other service branches, NATO and the partner nations speaking the same language.

“There’s language barriers and differences in doctrine, how someone may describe a task, the outcome, how they describe an effect they want to achieve,” he said. “It can add complexity to what is already a complex warfighting requirement.”

With combined arms maneuvers, layering effects to achieve a strategic outcome, the reality is that in warfighting, intelligence collection, the kinetic and nonkinetic effects come from many different sources, Carpenter said.

These sources could be U.S. military, NATO, partners, interagency or civilians. Open-source intelligence comes from many different medians in many different forms.

“The question is, are we able to, with our warfighting language, paint a picture for a commander so they can make risk-informed decisions?” he said.

As part of the Army Transformation Initiative, the 56th Artillery Command and 2nd Multi-Domain Task Force combined into the 56th Multi-Domain Command.

Having a command that provides real-time targeting information; a command-and-control center that provides detailed planning, execution and assessments during current fighting and exercises; a field artillery headquarters; fuel artillery brigades across NATO; and inbound information advantage detachment will provide layered effects to the NATO and multidomain mission, Carpenter said.

“It’s an exciting time with technology and the innovation that’s going on right now in our Army and in Europe,” he said. “It’s our job to have the leader development programs, the training programs, to build the architecture and to build the processes.”

If his team builds these processes and programs, then when the new technology arrives in Europe, they will be able to employ them rapidly and decisively at the point of need. (Source: U.S. DoD)

Format

The event was held over three days.

1 July: Day 1 is at the Defence Academy of the UK in Shrivenham and provides insight from Army HQ and other customers on their intent for the future. This is supplemented by presentations from academia and industry.

2 July: Day 2 takes place at Cranfield University’s COTEC range facility on Salisbury Plain. This involves live-firing demonstrations from industry as well as an opportunity for delegates to fire small arms from different manufacturers and with different optics and technologies. There is also the opportunity to showcase and demonstrate autonomous and remote technologies.

3 July: Day 3 is back at Shrivenham and provides more technology briefs from industry and academia.

FNH UK

FNH UK presented a family of weapons, all with a common Receiver, which the company is offering for Op Grayburn, the SA-80 replacement contract. The Editor fired the whole Range.

The weapons on display included, the SCAR Sub Compact (SC) carbine, the FN EVOLYS™ 7.62 Ultralight Machine Gun, and the FN SCAR®-H MK2 Assault Rifle (7.62X51MM NATO CAL)

FN SCAR®-H MK2 Assault Rifle (7.62X51MM NATO CAL)

The FN SCAR®-H Mk2 STD assault rifle is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO calibre and is available with barrels of various lengths (13” or 16”) . These barrels are interchangeable in less than 5 minutes.

FN SCAR®-SC

The SCAR Sub Compact (SC) on display was fitted with the Aimpoint T2 with spacer (32mm). The SCAR H was fitted with the Zeiss 3x30i with FN reticle. As a complement to the renowned FN SCAR® assault rifles, grenade launcher and precision rifles, FN Herstal proposes the FN SCAR®-SC Subcompact Carbine in 5.56x45mm NATO or 7.62x35mm/.300 BLK calibre. Regardless of the calibre, the FN SCAR®-SC is extremely compact and comes standard with a standard telescopic buttstock allowing a 3-position length adjustment. A wide choice of additional buttstock configurations are available to best suit to user morphology and mission at hand.

FN EVOLYS™ Machine Gun Range.

The strapline on the FN web site says that the FN EVOLYS™ fires like a machine gun and handles like a rifle. That description was spot on. The FN EVOLYS™ has an added extra of an anti-recoil absorption pad at the end of the buttstock which by its very description absorbs all the recoil and allows the shooter to keep the machine gun on target for better accuracy. This was the first time that the Editor had fired a machine gun from the standing position. The results were excellent with the lightness and modular design showing through on the handling of the weapon and ability to keep rounds on target during bursts of fire. The FN EVOLYS™ has been developed in two calibres, 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62x51mm NATO.

FN EVOLYS™ 7.62 Ultralight Machine Gun

The brand new FN EVOLYS™ Ultralight Machine Gun combines the firing capabilities of a belt-fed machine gun with ergonomics and balance similar to an assault rifle, and complements the existing FN machine gun portfolio. The FN EVOLYS™ has been developed in two calibres, 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62x51mm NATO. The FN EVOLYS™ 7.62, with a weight of approx. 6.2 kilos, is much lighter than current reference machine guns. The sight on the Evolys 7.62mm was the new Elcan Specter DR1.5-6x (7.62).

Beretta Defense Technologies UK (BDT UK) briefed BATTLESPACE Editor Julian Nettlefold about the range of weapons the company is proposing for its Project Grayburn offering, the UK Requirement to replace the venerable L85A3 (SA80) and other infantry weapons.

Project Grayburn ultimately intends to procure around 170,000 assault rifles to replace the SA80, which was first introduced in 1985 and has been progressively upgraded, with the latest L85A3 version issued in 2018. The UK MoD has thus far not stipulated a desired calibre for the new weapons and appears to be open to researched options.

Can you refer to Beretta Defense Technologies UK (BDT UK) throughout unless specifically talking about the NARP rifle, in which case that will be Beretta
It would be worth mentioning the SAKO rifle that BDT UK are also putting forward to Project Grayburn alongside the NARP

o The Sako M23 5.56mm assault rifle is a modern, modular weapon system developed by Finnish manufacturer Sako, designed to meet the needs of NATO forces. It features a short-stroke gas piston operation, monolithic upper receiver, and M-LOK forend, allowing for enhanced durability and accessory attachment. The rifle is equipped with ambidextrous controls, a telescoping Magpul CTR stock, and a full-length NATO Accessory Rail (STANAG 4694) for mounting optics. It uses 30-round detachable polymer box magazines and is compatible with Ase Utra BoreLock suppressors. The M23 is currently being adopted by the Finnish and Swedish armed forces, with deployment starting in 2024 and 2025, respectively

DSEI UK 2025 Tech Zone reflects MoD’s call for rapid defence innovation as “groundbreaking work is being done outside of defence.” With the Ministry of Defence doubling down on technology to futureproof the UK’s armed forces, this year’s DSEI UK (9–12 September, Excel London) will unveil its updated Tech Zone with more than 100 tech companies, a hub for the cutting-edge innovation which is set to reshape how Britain fights and wins.

Tech giants like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Garmin Europe Ltd, and Capgemini will exhibit — showing that defence is no longer the domain of traditional contractors alone. AWS will demonstrate its cloud infrastructure, edge computing and satellite capabilities for military command and control. Garmin brings battlefield-ready flight tech, GPS, and wearables, whilst Capgemini is looking to bring its digital transformation and technology services to the defence industry.

Unveiled in the 2025 Strategic Defence Review, the MoD’s future force vision prioritises investment in digital, autonomous and space-based systems, recognising that the UK must adapt “at the speed of relevance” to meet a complex and evolving threat landscape.

The Tech Zone is set to reflect these themes as it will be home to the UK Strategic Command, UK MOD Science & Innovation, and Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S). Commander Strategic Command, General Jim Hockenhull KBE, ADC, recently stated in a DSEI UK interview that “much of the groundbreaking work is being done outside of defence organisations and DSEI (UK) allows us to have that partnership with industry to find new ways of doing things”.

Defence has long been a driver of technological advancement, but in today’s hyper-connected world, the proliferation of defence technology has accelerated exponentially. The conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated the value of low-cost, expendable unmanned aerial systems (UAS) which have proven effective against even the most high-end, sophisticated systems.

Reflecting this pivot, the Tech Zone has become one of the key drivers of growth at DSEI UK 2025, with the show organisers responding to this demand with the zone being housed in the expanded part of the Excel. DSEI UK will give a platform for start-ups, medium-sized and larger enterprise developing novel technologies including AI, autonomous systems, cloud computing, big data and advanced analytics (BD&AA) as well as disruptive innovation such as quantum computing.

The inaugural Counter UAS Middle East & Africa conference, due to take place in Amman on June 30 – July 1, 2025, has been officially rescheduled. The event’s organizers, SAE Media Group and the Jordan Design and Development Bureau (JODDB), announced the decision today in light of recent developments impacting travel to the region.

The conference will now take place on 16 – 17 September, 2025.

The conference will be the first dedicated platform for counter-UAS professionals operating in the Middle East and Africa, bringing together government officials, military representatives and industry leaders. It will provide an opportunity for cross-border collaboration on the rapidly evolving threat landscape in the Middle East and Africa.

France shut down the main Israeli company stands at the Paris Airshow on Monday for refusing to remove attack weapons from display, sparking a furious response from Israel and inflaming tensions between the traditional allies.

Stands including those of Elbit Systems (ESLT.TA), Rafael, IAI and Uvision were blocked off with black partitions before the start of the world’s biggest aviation trade fair. Smaller Israeli stands, which didn’t have hardware on display, and an Israeli Ministry of Defence stand, remained open.France, a long-time Israeli ally, has gradually hardened its position on the government of Benjamin Netanyahu over its actions in Gaza and military interventions abroad.
