04 Feb 26. USMC Prepares for Exercise Cold Response in Norway. A technical assistance and advisory team assigned to Blount Island Command, Marine Corps Support Facility Blount Island in Jacksonville, Florida, issued thousands of items to II Marine Expeditionary Force during a two-week cave draw in late January, marking a key step in unit preparations for Exercise Cold Response 26.
Marines preparing for the Norwegian-led winter exercise were equipped and supplied to operate in extreme cold-weather conditions. More than 14,000 items were issued, ranging from ready-to-eat meals and cold-weather gear to tactical vehicles and heavy trucks.
By drawing equipment and supplies from prepositioned stocks in Norway rather than shipping from the United States, the Marine Corps significantly reduced both time and cost.
According to Buddy Cote, technical assistance and advisory team officer in charge, using prepositioned assets saves more than a month compared to a transatlantic shipment, including time in transit, staging, loading and unloading, while avoiding more than $2 m in transportation costs.
“Blount Island Command’s ashore prepositioning department directly supports the Marine Corps’ doctrine for the rapid employment of expeditionary forces,” Cote said.
The equipment is part of the Marine Corps Prepositioning Program Norway, which maintains combat-ready assets in climate-controlled caves across Norway. The program has sustained an over 90% equipment readiness rate for several years through rigorous life-cycle management, including proactive maintenance, repair and modernization.
“The Marine Corps Prepositioning Program Norway reduces reaction times by providing combatant commanders with scalable and tailorable forces capable of executing limited objective missions across a wide range of military operations,” Cote said.
“This ongoing support strengthens NATO partnerships and ensures prepositioned assets are available for immediate use when called upon.”
Norwegian partners maintain and account for the prepositioned equipment on a day-to-day basis, a partnership that enhances interoperability and enables rapid integration during joint operations. 03 Feb 26. Babcock and ASELSAN sign Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen RAF training capability. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ASELSAN, a leading international defence electronics company, to explore the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) requirement for a Surface Electronic Warfare Threat (SEWT) training system as part of the Next Generation Operational Training (NGOT) programme. The system would provide advanced simulation of modern-day Integrated Air Defence Systems, supporting the UK’s commitment to enhance readiness across its forces. Working together with ASELSAN, we will develop a joint approach to this opportunity, aiming to deliver a realistic and scalable simulation capability that reflects the complexity and pace of today’s military flying operations. By combining deep operational understanding with advanced technology, the collaboration aims to provide training environments that accurately mirror real world threats, preparing aircrew for the demands of increasingly complex missions.

19 Jan 26. Last week Allied Command Operations (ACO) officially launched NATO exercise STEADFAST DART 2026 (STDT26) across Central Europe. STEADFAST DART 2026 marks the second overall deployment of the Allied Reaction Force (ARF), but its first within the area of responsibility of Joint Force Command Brunssum, who will lead the exercise. The exercise will demonstrate the operational and strategic capabilities of the NATO force and other participating units, integrating land, air, space, cyber, maritime, and special operations forces.
“Last year, STEADFAST DART incorporated the first deployment of NATO’s new Allied Reaction Force, demonstrating Allied Command Operations’ ability to respond at a moment’s notice to an emergent threat to our Alliance,” said US Air Force General Alexus G. Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe. “This year’s exercise builds upon that success and will again demonstrate NATO’s responsiveness, as well as its strength, in what will arguably be one of NATO’s most visible exercises this year, with forces on the land, at sea, and in the air, who will operate in all domains.”
The exercise consists of two major phases, a deployment phase and a training phase. The deployment phase began earlier this month, and the training phase begins next month. Both phases will occur during a simulated conflict scenario involving a near-peer adversary and will show that the ARF and other participating forces can conduct and sustain complex operations across multiple locations in Central Europe, particularly in Germany. There, the NATO exercise will flow directly into QUADRIGA, a German employment exercise.
Joint Force Command Brunssum has planned the exercise in close coordination with Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE*) over the last two years. “STEADFAST DART 2026, NATO’s largest exercise of 2026, shows that the Alliance can act swiftly, stand united, and respond decisively under the leadership of Joint Force Command Brunssum—exactly when it matters most,” said the Commander of JFC Brunssum, General Ingo Gerhartz. “With Exercise STEADFAST DART, we are demonstrating that NATO’s Allied Reaction Force toolbox contains every capability needed to react to any threat.”
Approximately 10,000 service personnel from 11 nations, including ARF units from Bulgaria, Czechia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Spain, and Türkiye, as well as Belgium, France and the United Kingdom, who are linking national exercise activities with STEADFAST DART, will participate in the exercise.
*Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum is one of three operational Headquarters of NATO and is located in the city of Brunssum, The Netherlands.
Editor’s Footnote: NATO AJFC Brunssum has already invited JOINT-FORCES to visit elements of STDT26 on two training areas in Northern Germany some 200km apart, but prior booked commitments and a packed February diary mean we are unable to give this major exercise as much personal attention as we would like to. However, if at all possible, one of our small team will attempt to attend at least one specialist media facility.

20 Jan 26. U.S. Army, Polish Land Forces Conduct Operation Winter Falcon 2026. Soldiers assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, conducted an armored live-fire exercise and technology demonstrations during Operation Winter Falcon 26 at the Drawsko Combat Training Center in Oleszno, Poland, Jan. 13. The event demonstrated how modern military operations rely on integrating multiple systems, including unmanned aerial systems and counter-UAS capabilities, to strengthen defensive capabilities. The demonstration reflected how the United States and its NATO allies are modernizing to reinforce defenses in Poland and across the alliance. Polish and U.S. forces fired their M1A2 Abrams tanks side by side on the firing line. This marked the first time Polish forces fired their M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks alongside U.S. forces, demonstrating both the platform’s firepower and the coordination among partner nations. The commander of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, Army Col. Matthew Kelley, emphasized the importance of communication when building relationships to deliver interoperability.

“We train to be ready for anything that might happen in the future,” Kelley said. “There is no way you could do that on your own.”

The commander also spoke about the importance of training in Poland and the value it brings to his troops.

“The strength of our allies together is how we demonstrate that resolve, that commitment, and you’ve [got to] do that in the place you may have to defend,” he said.

After the live-fire exercise, a static display of UASs featured drones that can provide reconnaissance for ground and armored forces and engage enemy vehicles while the pilot remains in a secure position.

Polish vehicles, such as the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System and the AH-64D Apache helicopter, were displayed alongside U.S. technology systems to counter opposing UAS. The static display illustrated how both UAS and counter-UAS systems complement armored platforms such as the Abrams by providing reconnaissance, identifying potential threats at a distance and preventing adversaries from locating friendly forces. When presented together, the systems demonstrated the growing role of UAS and counter-UAS technologies in reinforcing NATO’s defensive posture along Poland’s eastern region. Operation Winter Falcon 26 underscored the importance of innovation for NATO’s armed forces in modern military operations. 12 Jan 26. BRICS Plus navies commence exercise off South African coast amid controversy. The Will for Peace 2026 maritime exercise officially launched on Saturday 10 January, with an Opening Parade at Naval Base Simon’s Town in Cape Town, signalling a significant expansion of maritime security cooperation within the BRICS Plus framework. The exercise brings together navies from South Africa, China, Russia, Iran, and other BRICS Plus members, signalling a major expansion of maritime security cooperation, but it has also sparked debate.

Critics warn that hosting Chinese, Russian and Iranian warships could compromise South Africa’s non-aligned foreign-policy stance and strain relations with Western partners, particularly the United States. Supporters, however, emphasise that the exercise is focused solely on maritime safety, joint operations, and interoperability. Led by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy and hosted by the South African Navy, which has provided the training area, Will for Peace 2026 brings together a diverse coalition of nations to address evolving maritime threats. The navies of South Africa, China and Russia have previously exercised together in maritime drills known locally as Exercises Mosi (2019) and Mosi II (2023). This series has now evolved into what the SA Navy describes as a “joint, interagency, inter-departmental, multinational exercise” involving all BRICS Plus members. Formally opening the exercise, a Chinese naval official emphasised the importance of multinational cooperation, noting the growing complexity of the maritime security environment and the need for joint responses to shared challenges.

In his address during the Opening Parade, the Chinese official characterised Will for Peace 2026 as the result of months of cooperation and preparation by national leaders and legal experts. He said the exercise represents a strategic evolution from earlier iterations, with a shift towards more “pragmatic” manoeuvres.

He added that the drills have been modernised to meet the “needs of the times”, focusing on “new forces” and enhancing the ability of joint forces to address maritime security challenges in a coordinated manner.

“We hope that this joint exercise will become more and more powerful and more and more prosperous… developing and progressing in a more pragmatic and in-depth direction that better meets the needs of the times,” he told assembled dignitaries.

South Africa was praised as the host nation for providing “comprehensive support”, enabling the smooth and effective execution of the exercise.

The official concluded with a call for professionalism, stating: “It is hoped that officers and sailors from all countries will make good use of this brief but invaluable gathering together to conduct communications, deepen future learning, strengthen solidarity and cooperation, [and] promote friendship and mutual trust.”

=A defining feature of this year’s exercise is the inclusion of newly expanded BRICS Plus members. While South Africa, China, Russia and Iran have deployed active surface combatants, Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates are represented as observers only. India is notably absent.

Activities will include a live-fire exercise in the southern portion of False Bay.

SA Navy Captain Ndwakhulu Thomas Thamaha, the Joint Task Force Commander for the exercise, stressed that Will for Peace 2026 goes beyond a routine military drill, describing it as “demonstration of our ability to resolve to work together.”

“In an increasingly complex environment,” he said, “an operation such as this is not optional; it is essential.”

He concluded by expressing the hope that the exercise would “deepen our unparalleled mobility, strengthen our friendships, and reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, maritime safety, and mutual understanding”.

South African vessels participating in the exercise are the Valour-class frigate SAS Amatola (F145) and the Warrior-class multi-mission inshore patrol vessel SAS King Adam Kok III (P1573).

China has deployed the Type 052DL guided-missile destroyer Tangshan (122) and the Type 903A replenishment ship Taihu (889) to take part in the exercise. These vessels are part of China’s naval escort taskforce in the Gulf of Aden.

Russia is contributing the Steregushchiy-class corvette Stoykiy (F545), embarked with a Ka-27PL anti-submarine warfare helicopter, along with the Altay-class oiler Yelnya (A168).

The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy is represented by the Bayandor-class corvette Naghdi (82) and the expeditionary sea base Makran (441), carrying an AB-212 ASW helicopter.

A Gowind-class corvette of the United Arab Emirates Navy, Bani Yas (P110), is also present in Simon’s Town but will not participate in the exercise itself.

The maritime exercise off South Africa’s coast has become controversial because it brings Chinese, Russian and Iranian warships into joint drills under the expanding BRICS Plus framework, prompting criticism that South Africa is compromising its non-aligned foreign-policy posture and straining ties with Western partners, particularly the United States, by hosting sanctioned or adversarial naval forces in its waters. Domestic opponents, including the Democratic Alliance, argue that allowing Russian and Iranian participation sends a political signal that undercuts South Africa’s neutrality and risks diplomatic and economic fallout, while supporters insist the exercises are solely about maritime safety and interoperability.

03 Dec 25. Plexsys and BAE Systems OneArc sign MoU to boost defence training. The MoU sets out plans for both companies to increase technical integration and to develop solutions for operational needs. Plexsys and BAE Systems OneArc have entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), establishing a formal commitment to deeper technical integration and collaborative development in defence training systems. The MoU was signed on the first day of I/ITSEC 2025 in Orlando, Florida. It establishes a framework for closer collaboration between the companies, focusing on advancing interoperability and coordination in the delivery of Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) training systems to military users globally. The companies plan to integrate Plexsys’ Advanced Simulation Combat Operations Trainer (ASCOT) 7 environment generator with OneArc’s VBS4 synthetic training platform to provide unified scenario generation and enhanced visualisation across air, land, maritime, space, and cyber domains. According to the agreement, Plexsys and OneArc intend to streamline training workflows for military customers by simplifying integration and minimising friction between tools. The collaboration will also look at aligning future product development to ensure ongoing compatibility as new features are introduced.

Plexsys chief operations officer Dr. Hart Rutherford said: “OneArc’s platforms and our environment generator already work together within many customer ecosystems, and this MoU allows us to take that collaboration even further. By aligning technical roadmaps and deepening integration, we can deliver training experiences that are more immersive, more interoperable, and more operationally relevant. We look forward to what this next phase of collaboration will achieve.”

Varjo, the leading provider of military-grade virtual and mixed reality headsets, has today launched its State of XR in Simulation Training Report 2026, delivering a comprehensive and detailed insight into the landscape, challenges, and future direction of virtual and mixed reality technology in the simulation and training industry.  Launching at I/ITSEC, the premier event for next-generation simulation and training technologies, Varjo’s report reveals the defense industry’s growing maturity in adopting highly immersive XR technologies to power the next generation of training.  The State of XR in Simulation Training Report comes at a pivotal moment for the industry, as NATO nations face the dual challenges of readiness and modernisation amid an increasingly unpredictable and ambiguous battlefield. In this environment, XR is playing an expanding role in scaling training capacity.  Comprising both quantitative and qualitative input from 106 industry professionals, the report finds that virtual and mixed reality training is most effective when it complements traditional simulators and live exercises. This combination creates a more efficient and realistic training flow, supporting collaboration across different units, locations, and mission types. The integration of classroom instruction, XR systems, and high-fidelity, full-mission simulators will be fundamental to a successful and effective training framework.   • Training goals are evolving: Realistic simulation (86%), mission rehearsal (50%), and multi-user or joint training (44%) dominate priorities, highlighting a shift toward collaborative, distributed training.
  • Unity and Unreal Engine remain the engines of choice, while interoperability (HLA/DIS) and multi-domain networking are emerging as critical requirements.
  • Hardware progress drives usability: Visual clarity (72.6%) and comfort (60.4%) are the top decision factors, reflecting the need for durable, high-resolution, and ergonomic systems suitable for long-duration training.
  • Challenges persist: Reliability issues, procurement hurdles, and lack of expertise remain the main adoption blockers, but organizations are increasingly recognizing XR as a strategic enabler, not a niche experiment.

The publication of the State of XR Report comes off the back of a period of increased momentum for Varjo. In October, the company launched its refreshed XR-4 Series headset, purpose-built to deliver superior training across land, sea, and air. In addition, last week, Varjo announced a strategic collaboration with German defense champion, Rheinmetall to integrate its technology into Rheinmetall’s deployable virtual land training systems.

01 Dec 25. British and Indian Army conclude eighth exercise, Ajeya Warrior. The UK and India concluded the eighth edition of the biennial army exercise, Ajeya Warrior on 30 November. The A (AMBOOR) Company 2nd Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles of the British Army and the Indian Army’s 21st Sikh Regiment were undertaking complex training at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan since the start of the exercise on 17 November.   Continuing the trend of increasing complexity and interoperability, the exercise this time focused on conducting peace enforcing operations in a counter-terrorism environment as mandated under the chapter 7 of the United Nations Charter. This involved executing simulated operations in a multi-domain urban and semi-urban environment.   During the exercise, the two armies shared standard operating procedures and tactics across Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (IED), small Uncrewed Aircraft System (sUAS) operations, company-level skills and drills, urban training, and support weapon employment.   This collaboration culminated in a battle group-level final training exercise, where the two forces operated under an integrated command, gaining invaluable experience and exchanging best practices.   Beyond the tactical domain, both contingents engaged in fitness and recreational activities, further strengthening camaraderie, alongside team sports and informal cultural exchanges that reinforced mutual respect and understanding.

Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India said:  “Defence and security forms a crucial pillar of UK-India Vision 2035. Exercise Ajeya Warrior is a demonstration of UK’s deepening defence ties with India as we deliver this shared vision over the next decade. Beyond military co-operation, it underscores our shared commitment to peace, stability and a rules-based international order.”

Ex Ajeya Warrior follows closely on the back of our Navies training together during the recent visit by the UK’s Carrier Strike Group and demonstrates the ever-closer relationship and readiness of both our militaries to face shared security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. We now greatly look forward to welcoming the Indian Army to the UK for Ex Ajeya Warrior IX in 2027.”

24 Nov 25. USAF Bolsters Airpower Readiness During Arctic Gold. The 354th Fighter Wing conducted readiness exercise Arctic Gold 26-1 at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, Nov. 17-19. The exercise is designed to test the wing’s ability to quickly generate, deploy and sustain combat-ready airpower in a high-threat environment.

“A lot of work and planning was put into getting this exercise to run efficiently and effectively, taking into account all of the separate factors that affect the way things play out and what we can accomplish towards the mission,” said Air Force Master Sgt. During the exercise, the 354th Operations Group tested its mission capabilities and readiness by deploying F-35A Lightning IIs from both the 355th Fighter Squadron and the 356th Fighter Squadron, supported by F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 18th Fighter Interceptor Squadron.

“The 354th OG is charged with providing combatant commanders with combat-ready forces in order to meet mission objectives and priorities,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Lloyd Wright, 354th OG deputy commander. “This accomplished by organizing, training and equipping our component squadrons who project power in the Pacific area of responsibility and maintain the northernmost strategic runway.”

Airmen carried the weight of the hands-on mission execution, building pallets, moving people and cargo, operating vehicles in extreme conditions and sustaining the pace required to generate combat power.

“Operating in the Arctic forces you to think differently, and our airmen proved that they not only understand the constraints but thrive in them,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Peter Daigle, 354th Logistics Readiness Squadron commander. “We rehearsed cold-weather processes, validated our deployment readiness, and stress tested the systems that enable fighter generation in one of the harshest climates on Earth.”

Daigle also highlighted the airmen’s ability to utilize technical skills and versatility, and to make sound decisions even outside their normal jobs, providing the tactical edge necessary in order to accomplish the mission.

19 Nov 25. QinetiQ and Forcys MoU to boost Australia maritime assurance. The companies will collaborate to provide advanced deployable underwater ranges and associated testing systems. Defence technology provider QinetiQ has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Forcys, aimed at enhancing Australia’s sovereign maritime assurance capabilities. The two companies plan to collaborate on the delivery of deployable underwater ranges and associated testing systems. These will support the measurement, verification and performance improvement of submarines, autonomous vessels, and other undersea technologies for the Australian Defence Force (ADF). This effort is intended to enable faster and more informed decision-making as Australia seeks to strengthen operational readiness in complex maritime settings.

QinetiQ brings experience in defence test and evaluation, mission assurance, and range management to the collaboration, while Forcys will contribute its underwater sensing and communication technology.

19 Nov 25. Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract by the Bundeswehr to modernise its Army Combat Training Centre (Gefechtsübungszentrum Heer, GÜZ) in Saxony-Anhalt. The main objective is to integrate the ‘Digitalisation of Land-based Operations’ (D-LBO) project into the central training facility of the land forces. The contract was booked in October 2025 and is worth around €61 m gross. The first services will also be provided in 2025, with the full integration scheduled for early 2028. The project will have a particular focus on integrating the new digital radio system into the combat training centre. Additionally, all data provided via the battle management system will be displayed in the centre’s command and control centre. Hence, the existing radio infrastructure will be upgraded and expanded extensively. Other components of the contract include establishing a new broadband radio infrastructure using 5G technology, and integrating the Tactical Core software from Rheinmetall subsidiary Blackned into the existing communications infrastructure. Modernisation will enhance and institutionalize training and leadership capabilities of the Bundeswehr and its NATO allies for the future. A unique multinational interoperability in the training context is being created in the Altmark region. Once the project is complete, the standard of training at the Combat Training Centre will be elevated to a new hight. The central evaluation software of the centre already offers the option of displaying language and position. Additionally, all digital command processes of the ‘Sitaware Frontline’ and ‘HQ’ systems introduced in the Bundeswehr will now also be processed in the central training software. This allows exercises to be evaluated more comprehensively for all participants. By the end of 2024, Rheinmetall had won several major digitalisation contracts for the Bundeswehr. Notably, these include the contract to integrate all land forces’ vehicle and platform IT systems as part of D-LBO and the contract to establish and operate the Tactical Wide Area Network for Land Based Operations

 

18 Nov 25. NATO Allies Wrap Up Major Air Exercise “Falcon Strike 2025” in Italy. Over 1000 personnel and 50 aircraft from Italy, France, Greece, the United Kingdom and the United States trained together from 3 to 14 November within the framework of exercise “Falcon Strike 2025” in the Mediterranean Sea. They operated from the Italian Air Force base of Amendola, near Foggia, and across other Italian air bases, with approximately 460 sorties and more than 1,000 flight hours logged. “Falcon Strike 2025” tested the operational readiness and effectiveness of air operations in highly complex scenarios for the protection and defence of our airspace. BAE Systems, Boeing and Saab have signed a Letter of Intent to collaborate on the UK Royal Air Force fast-jet trainer programme, leveraging T-7 as the core of the training system and creating a path for the three companies to support future international pilot training opportunities. The companies will collaborate on a training system, integrating live and synthetic training capability and associated mission systems and will explore further opportunities for growing the UK supply chain on the aircraft. BAE Systems will lead the activity, which will include a UK-based final assembly, creating high-value jobs in the UK.

This represents the first time an augmented reality flight training system has been integrated with a rotorcraft platform, demonstrating the latest advancements in training capabilities for current and future aviators. The ATARS platform transforms traditional flight training by overlaying realistic, threat-representative scenarios onto the real world, allowing pilots to train against near-peer adversaries in contested environments without the costs, risks, and logistical constraints of traditional live training exercises.

Stratasys (NASDAQ: SSYS) recently participated in Trident Warrior 25, the U.S. Navy’s flagship Fleet experimentation exercise, demonstrating how advanced manufacturing keeps military units operational at sea and in forward-deployed locations. In partnership with FLEETWERX and the Naval Postgraduate School’s Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education (CAMRE), Stratasys supported the Joint Advanced Manufacturing Cell (JAMC) with field-deployable 3D printers and on-demand production through Stratasys Direct. The JAMC was the Department of Defense’s largest distributed manufacturing demonstration to date, connecting assets across more than 8,000 miles. The exercise allowed the Navy to print parts in theater or reach back to Stratasys Direct for higher-volume or complex production, creating a wide-ranging ecosystem of support and options across forward-deployed locations. During the exercise, seven different sites across the global leveraged Stratasys printers, with all parts meeting U.S. military specifications. Trident Warrior 25 also demonstrated that by deploying 3D printers in the field, there is reduced reliance on traditional logistics chains. Lightweight, corrosion-resistant polymer parts were used to create new components, replace broken parts, and produce rapid prototypes in-theater, supported by reach-back production from Stratasys Direct.

At this year’s Air Force exercise Timber Express 2025, sensor specialist HENSOLDT demonstrated what software-defined, system-integrated, hardware-enabled and process-supported command and control capability looks like in practice. With the OPTARION operational support system (EUA) as well as new software, radio and integration capabilities, HENSOLDT made a decisive contribution to the networking of multinational task forces. The aim of the exercise was to network weapon systems of different branches of the armed forces in a common tactical data network and to further develop their interoperability. HENSOLDT demonstrated its ability to integrate complex command and control architectures end-to-end, from the command information system to the aircraft platform and back. The OPTARION EEA formed the technological bridge between different data links and systems. For the first time, it enabled the fully digital management of an NH90 helicopter robber in a multinational network, without parallel voice communication – a milestone for future-oriented command support. With the integration of the latest EUA TakOp configuration status and an extended interface to SitaWare headquarters, HENSOLDT showed how intelligent system integration increases tactical effectiveness and resilience in equal measure. In addition, new operational procedures were tested in the area of data links, based on the capabilities of the EEA New Technologies (NT) under development. Another focus was on the integration and testing of two RF antenna arrays, one of which was operated more than 100 kilometers from Manching. Thanks to the successful cluster operation, it was not only possible to address technical challenges, but also to take into account current operational requirements, such as the avoidance of conspicuous infrastructures in use, in a practical manner. The close cooperation between Battle Captains, EUA administrators and HENSOLDT experts impressively demonstrated that interoperability does not come about through technology alone, but where technical know-how and operational process understanding go hand in hand.

New Australian undersea training range to implement and improve warfighting tactics, proficiency and safety; enable joint/allied training that contributes to preserving and protecting Australian sovereignty. When it comes to undersea operations, reliability is crucial. L3Harris has been a pivotal player in the development and deployment of underwater range technology for the U.S. Navy since the early 1960s. All currently operational training ranges in the United States are equipped with systems designed, manufactured and installed by L3Harris. These systems are renowned for their reliability and long-term operational capabilities, with some currently operating in their third decade, and are instrumental in preparing the U.S. Navy and its allies for undersea operations. L3Harris’ expertise in creating high-reliability components within redundant, fault-tolerant architectures ensures robust performance in demanding underwater environments, both in near-shore areas and at depths up to 4,000 meters. L3Harris’ undersea range technology is considered the world’s leading solution, maintaining a competitive edge through company internal research and development, continuous evolution and leveraging decades of experience. Australia has benefited significantly from L3Harris’ expertise, with some systems undergoing three generations of upgrades and expansions. This extensive experience and proven track record were key factors in Australia’s decision to select L3Harris to design and deliver its new Maritime Underwater Tracking Range (MUTR). The MUTR will replace the original tracking range system, which ceased operations in 2012, equipping the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) with enhanced subsurface tracking capabilities and optimized readiness. The previous range, also installed by L3Harris, operated for nearly 20 years. Under the SEA 1350 MUTR contract, L3Harris will provide undersea warfare support capabilities to the Australian Defence Force (ADF). This will enable the Commonwealth to assess the readiness of current and future ADF assets, enhance surveillance, improve warfighting tactics and proficiency, and ensure sovereign readiness and superiority to protect Australia’s maritime approaches and sea lines of communication. Through a network of sensors, the tracking range will capture and relay information about the location and movement of assets in the tracking field. The MUTR will allow for exercises in both deep ocean and coastal waters, involving surface and subsurface assets simultaneously. This capability is crucial for the Commonwealth’s ability to quickly test and evaluate the readiness of existing and future platforms and their weapon systems, especially in support of Australia’s strategic shipbuilding program.

The Evolution of the Mobile Underwater Tracking Range for the RAN

For over three decades, L3Harris has been a reliable provider of both fixed and portable signature test and evaluation range services to the RAN. The RAN’s surface and subsurface fleet undergo acoustic ranging for signature anomalies prior to deployments. Lightweight and heavyweight torpedoes from submarines, surface ships and aircraft are tracked to provide performance evaluation, recovery assistance and range safety services. In 2008, L3Harris adapted its existing Portable Acoustic Sonobuoy Range (PASOR) system to augment an existing fixed tracking range that had suffered a cable failure. Since then, PASOR has evolved into the primary tracking range capability for torpedo exercises. It now includes deployable seabed sensors and is in development for a third generation, set to be delivered into SEA1350, incorporating autonomous surface vessel components. L3Harris’ tracking ranges have operated in all waters around Australia, handling torpedo firings in depths ranging from 50 to 4,500 meters and signature rangings in both tropical northern and cold southern waters. The compact receiver system fits into a person-portable case and has been deployed onto various vessels on short notice, sometimes with as little as 48 hours’ notice. To date, over 200 torpedoes have been tracked, including those air-launched and from U.S. Navy platforms.

Building for the Future

The MUTR will be constructed in Western Australia. As the incumbent supplier of ranges to the RAN, L3Harris will support Australia’s focus on anti-submarine warfare capabilities and facilitate littoral test and evaluation, enhancing the Navy’s capabilities over the next decade. With extensive experience supporting the undersea domain, including the Collins-class submarines, L3Harris’ Fremantle office is ideally suited for providing systems, maintenance, support and upgrades for the RAN. Additionally, our U.S. operations deliver capabilities for the Virginia-class submarines, which are supported in Australia.

22 Oct 25. V-BAT Supports ISR Operations for the US Navy During UNITAS 2025. Shield AI, the deep-tech company building state-of-the-art autonomy software and aircraft, announced it provided intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) support for U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/4th Fleet during UNITAS 2025, the world’s longest-running multinational maritime exercise. V-BAT, Shield AI’s Group 3 unmanned aircraft system (UAS), was deployed from USS Cooperstown (LCS 23) during the exercise, delivering consistent ISR capabilities throughout maritime training scenarios.  Running from Sept. 15 to Oct. 3, 2025, UNITAS brought together 8,000 personnel from 25 allied and partner nations, with ships, submarines, and both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft operating across the Americas to strengthen interoperability, enhance maritime domain awareness, and advance combined readiness.

Hanwha Aerospace has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Akkodis Nordics, a Norway-based company in digital engineering and solutions on October 21st at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2025. This agreement establishes a partnership to jointly develop a state-of-the-art simulator for the Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launcher System. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Billy Boo-hwan Lee, Head of PGM Business Group at Hanwha Aerospace, and Mr. Sebastian Eidem, Vice President of Operations at Akkodis Nordics. This strategic partnership is a key step in Hanwha Aerospace’s commitment to the Norwegian market, demonstrating a strong intent to foster local industry collaboration. The co-development of a high-fidelity simulator with a renowned Norwegian company like Akkodis will ensure that the training solution for the Chunmoo system is tailored to the specific operational needs and requirements of the Norwegian Armed Forces. The Chunmoo is a next-generation precision guided missile system capable of neutralizing key enemy targets from a safe distance, beyond the reach of conventional artillery. Using GPS/INS-guided missiles, it boasts pinpoint accuracy for highly precise strikes. Its launcher provides overwhelming firepower by carrying two different types of rocket pods simultaneously, more than doubling the firepower of competing systems in a single mission. The system is also field-proven, having been successfully exported to Poland and nations in the Middle East, which demonstrates its effectiveness and reliability. 13 Oct 25. Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Leonardo are collaborating to pursue the U.S. Army’s Flight School Next contractor-owned, contractor-operated (COCO) service contract. The partnership combines Boeing’s operational experience with Army rotary-wing training, and program delivery with Leonardo’s AW119T training helicopter to offer an efficient, scalable training solution for the next generation of aviators. Boeing’s Army training experience includes training services and mission systems support for the AH‑64 Apache worldwide, including live, virtual and constructive simulation, cockpit‑procedure trainers and instructor development programs to generate and sustain Apache aircrew readiness. Boeing’s services, combined with systems integration, simulation and program management capabilities, positions the team to deliver a full COCO.

The AW119T is a commercially supported single-engine trainer. The AW119T program has surpassed 100,000 flight hours, including more than 16,000 hours flown under instrument flight rules and more than 40,000 touchdown autorotations. Leonardo sustains 130 AW119T aircraft operated by the U.S. Navy near Fort Rucker, Alabama, enabling immediate logistics synergies and rapid responsiveness.

05 Sep 25. Northcom Wraps Up Arctic Edge 25. U.S. Northern Command successfully concluded Arctic Edge 25, a joint and combined, multidomain field training exercise conducted across Alaska from Aug. 1-31. The exercise demonstrated readiness, enhanced interoperability and advanced capabilities in the Arctic region.  AE25 included participation from Northcom forces, First Air Force, Army North, Naval Forces Northern Command, Marine Forces Northern Command, Special Operations Command North and Alaska Command. It also included participation from allied nations, including the United Kingdom and Denmark, as well as interagency partners such as the Alaska National Guard, FBI, Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Alaska state and local law enforcement and Alaska Native communities.  Key events during AE25 showcased the complexity and innovation required for Arctic operations. A joint explosive ordnance disposal team conducted mine clearance operations at Port Mackenzie and Cook Inlet, overcoming extreme tidal changes, high currents and limited visibility to capture critical observations for future EOD operations in the Alaska theater of operations. The team also recovered, transferred and exploited a simulated foreign unmanned underwater vehicle.  A joint Marine Corps/Coast Guard team executed a simulated raid to seize Port Mackenzie, thereby reestablishing force flow through the port, while the Army’s 3rd Transportation Brigade opened the unimproved port, conducting transit operations using austere facilities.  Additional highlights included High Mobility Artillery Rocket System rapid insertion missions, live-fire exercises, integrated air and missile defense engagements, and maritime security operations in the Bering Sea. These events provided invaluable training opportunities and strengthened Northcom’s Arctic readiness. Northcom also conducted cross-combatant command coordination and shared a common operational picture with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, as Arctic Edge ran concurrently with Indo-Pacom’s Northern Edge 25.  Arctic Edge 25 demonstrated the ability of engaged forces to assure, deter and defend North America in an increasingly complex Arctic security environment. 09 Sep 25. Babcock unveils immersive training product for maritime domain. Babcock International Group (“Babcock”), the defence company, has launched an innovative maritime variant of the Babcock Immersive Training Experience (BITE) – the latest example of how the product can be used across domains to transform training. Unveiled on the first day of DSEI in London, BITE is a data-rich immersive environment which delivers realistic naval exercises onshore. It ramps stress and assaults senses of personnel while measuring training performance for reviews – helping soldiers, sailors and aircrew to step into operations already acclimatised to pressure. Users enter the deployable unit to take part in exercises while being exposed to operationally realistic effects, including the sound of fighter jets and artillery fire, generated odours, power outages and smoke.

This planned attack on senses led one British Army warrant officer to describe the command bunker variant as being “as close as you’re going to get to the real thing” – with this latest evolution of BITE leveraging Babcock’s pan-domain expertise, to solve training challenges for all areas of defence. To demonstrate its adaptability, and in response to evolving requirements, Babcock presented BITE as a Ships Control Centre on the first day of DSEI to showcase how it can support with training sailors who assess crews for operational readiness.

As users deal with a crisis ‘on board’ the ship, the trainee trainers are assessed for how they monitor the responses of those involved.

This ‘train the trainer’ approach provides navies around the world with a mobile and deployable module which allows effective, easily repeatable training while reducing the requirement for exercises to take place at sea.

BITE can be configured for a range of naval challenges depending on the customer’s requirements – and visitors to DSEI will also be able to experience BITE operating as a command bunker for Army-based operations.

Jo Rayson, Managing Director for Babcock’s Training business, said: “Navies need realistic and representative training which prepares teams for operations, while using innovative technology to help free up platforms.

“We’ve shown how BITE can transform soldier training – and thanks to the technology and adaptability, we can reconfigure it for a variety of scenarios across land, sea and air. Babcock will also be showcasing its land scenarios at DSEI later this week – with the immersive training product forming one part of its complete training solution.

 

09 Sep 25. 4GD has  begun work on a significant upgrade to the military training environment at Copehill Down Village on Salisbury Plain. Copehill Down, a purpose-built “village”, is used to train for urban operations in built-up areas. The Urban Training facilities are being fitted with an Audio and Visual Closed Circuit Television capability and incorporated After Action Review (AAR) system.

Once complete, the modernised facility will support urban training serials. 4GD is delivering these improvements on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), together with Landmarc Support Services (Landmarc) and the Land Warfare Centre.

The village upgrades will provide a much more realistic, high-fidelity training environment which will enhance the war fighting ability of military personnel and help prepare troops for future potential operational deployments. . The utilisation of 4GD’s flagship products will elevate the quality of urban training on the site. Included in this upgrade is 4GD’s 4GAV After Action Review (AAR) system, which provides unrivalled visibility of all training exercises. These works will also deliver special effects to simulate both battlefield effects as well as pattern of life.

The expansion of 4GD products across the UK’s military training estate continues at pace. The news of the Copehill Down delivery adds further credibility to the quality of 4GD’s technology, which is now in use at Merville Barracks in Colchester, Catterick Training Area in North Yorkshire and Rollestone Camp on Salisbury Training Area. This represents a geographic reach covering the South West, East and North of England. The expansion presents an opportunity for an increasing number of soldiers across the country to be booked into 4GD facilities, to hone their urban fighting skills, close to their garrison base.

At over 94,000 acres, Salisbury Plain Training Area (SPTA) is the UK’s largest training area. It offers live firing and other facilities for armoured vehicles, artillery, engineers, infantry and aircraft. The regular Army, Army reserves and cadets use the training area, as do NATO allies.

04 Sep 25. Havelsan, Calidus to develop B-250 aircraft training system. Havelsan’s training systems will be installed at Calidus facilities in the UAE. Turkish company Havelsan has established a long-term partnership with United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Calidus to build an integrated training solution for the B-250 light attack and trainer aircraft. The agreement was signed during the IDEF 2025 event and follows an initial protocol established at the Saha Expo in 2023. The contract will see Havelsan supply a range of training solutions to facilitate various stages of pilot training.  These include a Flight Training Device (FTD) for a virtual environment simulating real-world missions and flight conditions and a Part Task Trainers (PTT) designed for specific aircraft systems and manoeuvres. Havelsan will also deliver a Cockpit Entry/Exit Simulator (CIES) aimed at instructing pilots on safe egress methods during emergencies, a Briefing and Debriefing Station (DBR), a tool for mission preparation and after-action reviews and a Computer-Based Training (CBT) programme that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application. 29 Aug 25. U.S., Panamanian Forces Participate in Pilot Jungle Training Course. U.S. Marines assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, recently conducted a pilot jungle survival orientation course alongside Panamanian security forces at Aeronaval Base Cristóbal Colón, Panama. The combined training program, developed in partnership with Panama’s military and the U.S. Army’s Jungle Operations Training Center, focused on survival skills, tactical combat care and patrol tactics in challenging jungle terrain. Medical personnel assigned to Joint Task Force Bravo provided vital support with HH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and medical evacuation training as part of the course.     The exercise strengthened bilateral military cooperation and regional security capabilities while fostering interoperability between U.S. and Panamanian forces. ST Engineering Antycip (“Antycip”) announced a major milestone in its simulation capabilities with the integration of its proprietary, certifiable low-latency image generator, MyIG, and MAK Technologies’ computer-generated forces (CGF) platform, VR-Forces.  This development marks a significant step in delivering an end-to-end simulation ecosystem for training. Developed entirely in-house by Antycip’s Italian R&D team, MyIG is a flexible and high-performance image generator designed to meet the evolving demands of both military and industrial simulation. The integration with VR-Forces brings dynamic, synchronised communication between synthetic forces and MyIG, which is designed for high-end training devices used in flight and automotive simulators. This seamless link between CGF and the visual engine allows users to experience more immersive and responsive virtual environments.

Ukrainian soldiers will receive a further boost from the British military’s expert training, as the Government announces the extension of the UK’s world-leading training programme on Ukrainian Independence Day. The UK is stepping up and evolving its training support to ensure Ukraine’s Armed Forces are in the strongest possible position as they resist ongoing Russian attacks, and to deter any further Russian aggression under a future peace deal by supporting the regeneration of Ukraine’s forces. Supporting Ukraine’s defence supports the UK’s own national security and helps counter the economic disruption caused by Putin’s illegal invasion. Training support and military equipment from the UK has helped give Ukraine a crucial boost on the frontline, with Russia continuing to lose far more vehicles and equipment to damage or destruction than Ukraine. The extension of Operation INTERFLEX to at least the end of 2026 was announced by the Defence Secretary amid Ukrainian celebrations today, marking 34 years since declaring independence from the Soviet Union. More than 50,000 Ukrainian recruits have been trained on British soil so far, with the UK leading 13 other nations providing support to the INTERFLEX programme as one of the biggest schemes of its kind in the world. The UK is also adapting INTERFLEX training to best suit Ukraine’s evolving military requirements, with a gradual shift from prioritising shorter courses centred on basic combat skills training, to a greater focus on leadership and instructor training. Two additional courses are now being delivered alongside the basic infantry course. One teaches soldiers how to be in command at a platoon and section leader level and the other is an instructor training course. Working closely with Ukraine means the UK Armed Forces can learn valuable insights and techniques from the battlefield, helping to improve skills and tactics. Support for Ukraine has also seen closer industrial collaboration, benefiting British businesses and supporting the government’s Plan for Change. The news comes as events take place across the UK today to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day and highlight the historic relationship that Britain and Ukraine have built. Nearly 2,000 Ukrainian recruits, British military personnel, and other attendees are set to celebrate at one of the INTERFLEX training sites in England.

INTERFLEX training began as a 5-week course to provide basic combat training to recruits, but following continued feedback and dialogue with Ukraine’s Armed Forces, has since become a 7-week course and offers alternative courses specifically designed to boost leadership and command skills for personnel, with new courses introduced, tailored according to seniority of trainees. Training a new generation of Ukrainian instructors is one of the most effective methods to strengthen Ukraine’s security both now and in the long-term, increasing skills and capacity to expand its own training programmes. It will help Ukraine continue to regenerate its military capabilities, which would act as the strongest deterrent against further attacks from Putin under any peace deal. New survey results of Ukrainian recruits who have completed training under Operation INTERFLEX from January to August 2025 revealed that 83% of those on leadership courses said they felt more able to make their troops under their command survivable at the end of their leadership training. The data also revealed that 93% of leadership trainees felt more confident they can make troops under their command more lethal at the end of their training.

Recent open-source reporting indicates that support from the UK and other nations has helped Ukraine achieve remarkable results on the battlefield, with more than 4,000 Russian battle tanks having been reported destroyed since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, compared with around 1,250 in Ukraine’s case. Reporting suggests that Russia has lost more than double the number of armoured vehicles compared to Ukraine.

Artem, a Ukrainian soldier currently training on Operation INTERFLEX’s Platoon and Company Sergeants Course said: “I am very grateful to the UK for supporting the people of Ukraine in their struggle for independence and identity as a nation. I am grateful for the opportunity to take such courses, for the high level of professionalism of the instructors, their dedication to their work, and for their ability to organise both group training and find an individual approach for each of us. Instructors ensure that classes are conducted in conditions as close to real-life as possible, whether it be in trenches, in a forested area, or in an urban area. I learned how important it is to be prepared for coordinated actions in conditions of increased danger, how to properly coordinate personnel during defence, and planning offensive actions. I learnt how to survive in conditions of minimal support and improve first aid skills.”

Work on a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia has deepened in recent weeks under US leadership, with the Prime Minister flying out to Washington last week to meet with President Trump and President Zelenskyy alongside other European leaders. The Chief of the Defence Staff also held meetings on the Coalition of the Willing with other NATO chiefs. The Coalition of the Willing – led by the UK and France – has developed plans for a multinational military force that could be deployed to Ukraine to provide support in the event of a peace deal. Several planning meetings in recent months have involved more than 200 military planners and input from around 30 countries. The UK remains fully committed to securing a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and are engaging with key allies in support of this effort, which is why £4.5bn is being spent on military support to Ukraine this year, the largest amount provided to date. In March, the Prime Minister announced a historic £1.6bn deal to provide more than five thousand air defence missiles for Ukraine – creating 200 new jobs and supporting a further 700. 21 Aug 25. U.S., South Korea Kick Off Ulchi Freedom Shield 25. The 7th Air Force and other U.S. forces are partnering with South Korea to conduct Ulchi Freedom Shield 25, which began Aug. 18 and continues through Aug. 28.  This annual exercise aims to enhance the combined, joint, all-domain and interagency operating environment, thereby strengthening the regional alliance’s response capabilities.  Freedom Shield 25 is a defense-oriented exercise featuring live-fire, constructive and field training exercises that engage alliance forces and governmental agencies. Key aspects of the training focus on conducting all-domain operations leveraging component assets.  Key players in these large-scale, live-fire training events include Combined Forces Command, U.S. Forces Korea, United Nations Command, the South Korean joint chiefs of staff, the South Korean government, the 8th Army, 7th Air Force, and Space Force. Each entity’s role leads to strengthening interoperability, reinforcing a combined defense posture and increasing combat readiness. Several United Nations Command member states are slated to contribute personnel and participate in various capacities.  During the exercise, USFK will participate in space-related elements, reflecting modern warfare challenges. U.S. guardians will also integrate space-based capabilities with terrestrial targeteers, logisticians and cyber capacities.  Members of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission, Sweden and Switzerland, are observing the exercise.  U.S. aircraft will integrate with South Korean aircraft for several live-fly exercise events. Integrated U.S. F-35A and F-35C Lightning IIs will enable the exercise to focus on complex scenarios, fifth and fourth-generation aircraft integration, and sustained, continuous air operations, enhancing interoperability between the two countries.  Ulchi Freedom Shield 25 underscores the continuing military partnership between the U.S. and South Korea and is implemented in the spirit of the Oct. 1, 1953, mutual defense treaty. Additionally, the exercise is conducted in support of the Korean Armistice Agreement, fortifying the combined defense posture and enhancing response capabilities. 20 Aug 25. Sharpening the Arctic Edge. Training in the Arctic means braving freezing winds, icy seas and rugged terrain. But for soldiers assigned to the 3rd Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) it’s just another day in the life.   A joint force team of soldiers, Marines, airmen and Coast Guardsmen traveled to Anchorage, Alaska, to complete training in some of the world’s harshest conditions from July 31 to August 14.  Exercise Arctic Edge, led by North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, demonstrates the U.S. military’s capabilities in extreme cold weather, joint force readiness and commitment to mutual strategic security interests in the Arctic region.  The launch of a high-altitude balloon from the Malemute Drop Zone at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, contributed to the exercise’s focus on advancing technology and operational readiness in the Arctic’s challenging environment. The training focused on port operations. Because of strict tide schedules, training was held concurrently. Soldiers completed vessel docking and roll-on/roll-off procedures along with drivers’ training, reacting to indirect fire, and loading/unloading operations.  Ultimately, the exercise is all about teamwork. 19 Aug 25. Northern Edge 2025 Kicks Off Across Alaska. More than 6,400 service members, 100 aircraft and seven U.S. and Canadian vessels are participating in Northern Edge 2025, a joint field-training exercise taking place at various locations in and around Alaska. The exercise, led by U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, serves as a platform for joint, multidomain operations to deliver high-end, realistic warfighter training, strengthen joint interoperability and sharpen the air and sea-based combat readiness of U.S. and participating forces.

“Northern Edge 2025 brings together multidomain capabilities in high-end warfighting to ensure readiness to deter and, if necessary, defeat any adversary,” said Air Force Brig. Gen. Rick Goodman, the exercise director. “Additionally, NE25 allows the joint force to work through posture and sustainment, specifically here in Alaska.”

Beyond tactical execution, Northern Edge aims at larger operational priorities.

“One of the key objectives of [the exercise] is the cross-combatant command coordination between Indo-Pacom and [U.S. Northern Command],” Goodman added. “This highlights the criticality of Alaska as a key strategic geographic location important to homeland defense, as well as power projection, should we find ourselves in a conflict in the Indo-Pacific [region].”

Participants represent all U.S. armed services in multiple domains, including cyber operations with the Army. Additionally, the Royal Canadian Navy and Air Force will be fully integrated with U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force mission sets. Canadian assets include the Airbus CC-150 Polaris refueler and Halifax-class frigate HMCS Regina.  The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln will participate in the exercise along with other elements of Carrier Strike Group 3, including Destroyer Squadron 21, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS O’Kane, USS Michael Murphy and USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. and the nine squadrons of fourth and fifth-generation aircraft of Carrier Air Wing 9.

“The mission of U.S. Navy carrier strike groups is to deliver sea control and power projection wherever the nation needs us,” said Navy Rear Adm. Todd Whalen, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3. “The sailors and Marines of [USS] Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group are excited to serve alongside our joint force counterparts to demonstrate our commitment to the region and our combined lethality.”

This year, Northern Edge coincides with Exercise Arctic Edge 2025, an annual exercise conducted by the North American Aerospace Defense Command and Northcom. For the first time, the two exercises will occur concurrently with activities spanning the Alaska theater of operations, from the Aleutians to Adak Island.

“Arctic Edge is focusing on the homeland defense here in Alaska, and Northern Edge is going to add on a very specific layer of power projection and that high-end warfighting capability,” Goodman said.

He added that by executing operations simultaneously, both commands can enhance cross-combatant command coordination, integrate missions and demonstrate the ability to position and sustain operations throughout the theater. (Source: U.S. DoD)

Russia, Belarus to hold joint military drill next month.  Russia and Belarus are expected to conduct a joint military exercise next month involving nuclear weapons and Russian-made hypersonic missiles, the Belarusian defense minister said last week. During a recent press conference in Minsk, Viktor Khrenin declared that the planned “Zapad-2025″ training, to be held from September 12-16, would in part focus on operating the intermediate-range Oreshnik missile, used in Russian-launched attacks on Ukraine.

“This is an important element for our strategic deterrence – as the head of state demands, we must be prepared for anything,” Khrenin was quoted by Reuters as saying in an interview with the Belarusian state news agency Belta.

The first operational use of the Russian-manufactured missile was reported on November 21, 2024, after an attack on a Ukrainian industrial complex in Dnipro. The remarks from Khrenin were made only two days ahead of the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Alaska. The much-anticipated summit ended with a thud after the two leaders conceded they had failed to reach any agreements on how to end the Russia-Ukraine war. The joint exercise, which usually takes place every two years, is also planned to include the simulated use of nuclear weapons, although no specific details were given. Ukrainian officials have warned previously that similar events could be used as a potential cover-up for Russian troop deployments. The 2025 national threat assessment published by the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defense noted that although there are currently no Russian ground maneuver units in Belarus, Russia has continued to utilize Belarusian airspace freely. Last year, Putin and his Belarusian counterpart, Alexander Lukashenko, signed a treaty providing security guarantees to Minsk, including the potential deployment of Russian nuclear weapons to help fight off any attack. Nearby neighbour Lithuania, which shares a 679-kilometre border with Belarus, is also conducting its military drill, Arsus Vilkas 2025, taking place until August 22. The event was launched amid the arrival of Russian military equipment in Belarus for the upcoming exercise. The deployment of Russian hypersonic missiles has posed security concerns regarding their ability to travel at speeds much faster than conventional ballistic projectiles, allowing them to be more challenging to intercept. 15 Aug 25. SANDF launches landmark Joint Basic Military Training for 11 000 new recruits. The SA National Defence Force (SANDF) will this month boost its personnel by 11 000 in a major Military Skills Development System (MSDS) intake to put more – trained – boots on the ground. An instruction (52/2025) by South Africa’s senior soldier, General Rudzani Maphwanya, signed 1 July, deals with “presentation of Joint Basic Military Training (JBMT) for MSDS”. This is a first in that it recruits 10 000 members to the four SANDF services as well as 1 000 for Reserve Force service, with the new members to all go through basic military training (BMT) at one venue – 3 SA Infantry (SAI) Battalion in Kimberley. Previously MSDS recruits underwent basic military training at the service they were assigned, with the SA Army topping the list at 1 591 for this year’s January intake. The maritime service was boosted by 460 MSDS recruits with the SA Air Force (SAAF) adding 337 and the SA Military Health Service 150 this year. On completion of service-specific BMT, a number of MSDS recruits moved to Defence Intelligence as well as the Military Police, Logistics and other specialist divisions. Explaining the imminent call-up of 11 000 new recruits, Maphwanya writes that the SANDF exit mechanism, together with normal attrition, is seeing an annual turnover of approximately 2 000 personnel. “The time it takes to have soldiers ready to deploy on operations makes it necessary to consider a more efficient system of young, agile and holistically trained individuals for the SANDF.”

“The aim of the intakes is to increase the force levels for the purposes of conducting successful military operations, as mandated, over the [three-year] Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) period. The SANDF must develop a universal soldier that can operate in the current battle space, enhance interoperability in the SANDF and to have soldiers that are fit for purpose.”

The August 2025 intake will be an extension of the January 2025 intake, Maphwanya explained. “The purpose of the JBMT and combat readiness training is to develop and prepare the recruits of the aforementioned intake to deploy and function as fully-fledged members of any deploying formation and unit, prior to them returning to their respective services to proceed with their specialised and corps training.” The Chief of the SANDF stated that in an era marked by complex and multidimensional security challenges, the need for “a cohesive and interoperable defence force has never been more critical.” Joint Basic Military Training will “significantly enhance” the SANDF’s operational effectiveness and strategic capabilities. Training of MSDS recruits will take place from 25 August to 21 May 2026. “To enhance vigilance and responsiveness in border security, JBMT recruits will deploy for six months under all deployed battalions and companies on the Republic of South Africa (RSA) borderlines. With their physical fitness and agility, they can maintain high levels of vigilance and respond quickly to any security threats or breaches along the borders,” Maphwanya’s instruction states. Recruits will deploy on internal operations from 5 June 2026 to 5 February 2027. Maphwanya lists potential internal deployments as operations Corona (border safeguarding), Chariot (disaster relief and humanitarian assistance) and Prosper (safety and security). After this period, recruits will be handed over to difference services and divisions by March 2027. Service-specific training will take place between 9 March 2027 and 1 August 2027. Armscor has been tasked to source “various equipment” for the JBMT intake by way of tender ELWS/2025/45 issued on 4 August with a closing date of 18 August. Detailed tender information is not disclosed unless to a bona fide bidder with some, mostly electronics, projectors, microphones and smart screens, listed in the Maphwanya instruction as needing to be acquired. 29 Jul 25. Textron, Leonardo to propose M-346N for US Navy UJTS. Powered by two Honeywell F124-GA-200 turbofan engines, the M-346N has maximum cruise speed of more than 590 knots. Textron Aviation Defense and Leonardo have partnered to pitch the Beechcraft M-346N aircraft for the US Navy’s Undergraduate Jet Training System (UJTS) programme. The US Navy has issued multiple Requests for Information (RFIs) in anticipation of a forthcoming Request for Proposals (RFP) for a new aircraft to be procured under the programme. The proposed Beechcraft M-346N is part of a comprehensive training system derived from the original M-346 aircraft developed by Leonardo. Globally, more than 100 units of the Leonardo M-346 are already serving rigorous pilot training regimens for air forces equipped with 4th and 5th generation fighter jets, including those at Italy’s International Flight Training School (IFTS). The twin-engine M-346N is equipped with advanced digital flight controls and avionics, including a fly-by-wire system with fourfold redundancy. The cockpit is outfitted with advanced interfaces such as a head-up display, large area display, HOTAS controls, and safety innovations like the Auto-GCAS. Textron Aviation Defense president and CEO Travis Tyler said: “With our heritage deeply rooted in the strength and reliability of American manufacturing, the Beechcraft M-346N joins a proud lineup of aircraft built on 95 years of aviation excellence.” Powered by dual Honeywell F124-GA-200 turbofan engines, the M-346N can achieve speeds exceeding 590 knots and can operate at altitudes up to 45,000ft. 31 Jul 25. Serbia Holds First Joint Special Forces Drills with China. Serbian and Chinese special operations forces conduct a joint urban assault drill during bilateral training exercises in July. The Serbian Ministry of Defense released the images following the completion of the training.  Serbian special forces carried out a 10-day joint military training exercise with Chinese forces, according to Serbia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  The exercise Peace Guardian 2025 ended on July 28 and involved Serbia’s 72nd Special Operations Brigade alongside a special forces unit from China’s People’s Liberation Army. Boeing (BA.N) and Sweden’s Saab are in talks with Britain’s BAE Systems about teaming up on a future replacement of Britain’s Hawk trainer in a growing niche of the fast jet industry, three people familiar with the matter said. Boeing and Saab have jointly developed the T-7 advanced trainer for the U.S. Air Force, while Britain has said it plans to replace its out-of-production Hawk fleet, part of which is instantly recognisable through its Red Arrows display team. Proposals are at an early stage and details are still to be worked out, with no guarantee that an agreement can be reached, one of the sources said.

24 Jul 25. Airbus, TUSAŞ sign deal on Hürjet jet trainer collaboration for Spain. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) and Airbus, one of Europe’s leading aerospace companies, have inked an agreement to accelerate the export of the Hürjet advanced jet trainer to Spain. Signed during the 17th International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) here, the pact formalizes the collaboration between TUSAŞ and Airbus on the Hürjet program and defines each company’s role in Spain’s jet trainer procurement process. The move follows a memorandum of understanding signed in May between TUSAŞ and a Spanish defence industry consortium that includes Airbus, focusing on industrial collaboration around the Hürjet. The new agreement aims to accelerate the process of integrating the aircraft into the Spanish Air Force inventory. The partnership also clarifies key details regarding the export of the Hürjet. Under the agreement, up to 30 Hürjet aircraft are expected to be procured to meet Spain’s jet trainer requirement. The final sales contract is scheduled to be signed by the end of 2025, with deliveries planned to begin in 2028. The agreement sets the work-share terms for both parties and is considered the final step before the anticipated order from the Spanish Air Force later this year.

“This agreement, signed between the two companies, outlines how we intend to run the Hürjet program in Spain. It sets the intent and defines the terms — how we are going to work together, who will be responsible for what, and how we will integrate the Spanish team into the Hürjet project,” said Jean-Brice Dumont, head of air power at Airbus Defence and Space.

“We are also building a training system around the aircraft. The aircraft itself is, of course, the flying platform, but the ultimate goal is to train future pilots. That involves simulators, software, and various technologies integrated around the aircraft. All of this is included in our joint agreement.”

When asked about the potential risks the project may face, Dumont told Defense News that one of the key challenges lies in introducing Spanish-specific customization while the aircraft is still under development. This creates the risk of overlapping time horizons, he said.

“To mitigate that, it’s crucial for Turkish Aerospace to complete aircraft development and prepare for delivery, while both teams begin working together to become familiar with the program. This first step is critical,” Dumont said.

“We need a basic aircraft as the foundation, and that aircraft is currently under development. Once that’s ready, we can move forward with the Spanish customization. These two efforts will proceed in parallel. However, we must be careful not to overburden the core development team during this process.”

Dumont said that the company’s goal is to deliver on industrial-policy obligations under the sale.

“The Spanish Ministry of Defense has asked for the incorporation of Spanish content into the Turkish aircraft and the establishment of strong industrial ties between Spanish entities and Turkish Aerospace,” he said. “That is our current priority.” (Source: Defense News)

 

23 Jul 25. Growth in Participation, New Capabilities Made Talisman Sabre 25 Successful. The Talisman Sabre 25 multinational exercise kicked off last week with more than 35,000 participants from 19 nations, including the United States and Australia.  During a discussion yesterday with the Defense Writers Group, Army Lt. Gen. Joel B. Vowell, deputy commanding general of U.S. Army Pacific, shared his observations about the exercise, which has been held every two years since 2005.  Talisman Sabre has grown significantly since its first iteration, Vowell said. This year, 19 nations participated, with two more observing.

“The growth and attendance of participation is a signal of how important regional stability and security is to everybody,” he said.

What started 20 years ago as a U.S.-Australia bilateral effort now includes Canada, Fiji, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga and the United Kingdom.  Hostile actions and behaviors of the People’s Republic of China, along with aggregated threats from Russia and North Korea, for instance, are driving increased participation in Talisman Sabre, Vowell said.

He added that early in his tenure, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth outlined his priorities for the department, which included working closely with allies and partners to deter aggression in the Indo-Pacific. Ensuring interoperability between those nations is a key part of that effort.

At Talisman Sabre, Vowell said, a live-fire demonstration of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System by the U.S., Australia and Singapore exemplified that cooperation.

The U.S. regularly trains with the HIMARS, but Australia and Singapore now own the system as well. This year marked the first time those three nations worked together in a combined battery.

“We had a live-fire event at Shoalwater Bay, where all three countries combined into a composite HIMARS battery, received fire direction — a call for fire … from an observer for a deep strike target,” Vowell said. “You had an integrated fires solution with multiple different platforms from three different countries firing simultaneously on a deep target. “We fired SM6 live, first time west of the international date line, from the land and hit a sea target … at 166 kilometers,” Vowell said. “That was emblematic of the requirement the joint forces levied on the Army to be able to have a capability to hold maritime targets at risk from the land.”

The Chinese military anti-access, area denial network already has thousands of missiles pointed at Western Pacific targets, Vowell said, noting that the network has not fully accounted for distributed land forces capable of using surface fires to hit land, maritime or air targets.

“That’s an asymmetric advantage the Army is developing. We show that in Talisman Saber,” he said.

Deterrence is another key focus of the exercise because it demonstrates the capabilities and interoperability of the United States and its allies, potentially deterring adversaries’ undesirable actions.

“Our collective readiness, our signaling of what we’re doing forward, provides what has to be inferred and interpreted as a deterrent effect,” Vowell said. “The number of participants signals the resolve that we have in the region to work together.”

Talisman Sabre is not the only event in which the U.S. participates; Vowell said USARPAC is involved in approximately 45 different exercises.

“Throughout the year, our Army formations move from country to country to country to country to do these events, different parts of the exercises, different training objectives, but they all seek interoperability as an outcome; they all seek a deterrent mechanism,” he said.

Interoperability and readiness, he said, mean the United States is ready if called upon to do whatever it’s asked to do. But deterrence, he said, aims to prevent conflict from happening in the first place.

Serbia has launched a procurement effort to replace its Yugoslavia-era Soko G-4 Super Galeb (Super Seagull) jet trainer and light attack aircraft with a new type. The Serbian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Republic of Serbia Air Force and Air Defence (Ratno Vazduhoplovstvo i Protivvazduhoplovna Odbrana: RV i PVO) received a demonstration of the Embraer A-29 Super Tucano as one of the number of candidate airframes at Batajnica Air Base near Belgrade during the week beginning 21 July. Designated N-62 in Yugoslav/Serbian service, the Super Galeb was delivered between 1978 and 1991. Of the 85 aircraft originally received, 21 remain in the inventory of the RV i PVO, of which 10 are understood to be fully operational at any given time. It is understood that 24 new aircraft will be acquired to equip two squadrons of 12 aircraft each. Deliveries are slated to begin by 2030.

Sailors assigned to the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group and Marines assigned to the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit recently completed a Composite Training Unit Exercise, successfully demonstrating their ability to jointly create a lethal, warfighting force. During the three-week exercise, sailors and Marines aboard the USS Iwo Jima, the USS San Antonio and the USS Fort Lauderdale demonstrated they were “capable of delivering decisive combat power in any environment at any time,” said Navy Capt. Chris Farricker, commodore of Amphibious Squadron 8. ” success shows that we are America’s expeditionary quick-reaction force.” The team planned and executed missions including maritime interdiction operations; visit, board, search and seizure; amphibious assaults; tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel; live-fire exercises; reconnaissance and surveillance and noncombat evacuations. Sailors aboard the destroyer USS Bulkeley also took part in the exercise, testing and validating their warfighting capabilities across areas such as maritime security, air defense and surface warfare.

The UK Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Richard Knighton, called on Nato to conduct an operational level exercise in Europe to test command and control (C2) among allies.

“We need to test, train, and educate our people in the real world,” Knighton stressed to international counterparts during the Chief of the Air Staff’s Global Air and Space Chief’s Conference on 17 July 2025.

The CAS pointed to a recent exercise led by the United States Air Force Warfare Center, which hosted more than 10,000 air force personnel among Australia, Canada, the UK and US from California in February this year.

“Exercises like Bamboo Eagle [25-1] provide high end, multi domain, multinational, long range exercises where we can test and train ourselves against these kinds of scenarios”.

However, the European continent, which covers less than four m square miles, has proved far less conducive to the large-scale exercises that are played out across the Indo-Pacific expanse, which is considerably larger, exceeding one hundred m square miles.

But this is not impossible as another 10,000 troops from nine different nations proved earlier this year in Nato Exercise Steadfast Dart, which took place in Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece. 09 Jul 25. Textron’s TSUNAMI™ USV Reinforces Maritime Security at FLEX25. Textron Systems successfully demonstrated the autonomous TSUNAMI™ USV during a real time operational scenario at FLEX25 in El Salvador During FLEX25, the company supported the U.S. Southern Command (SOCOM) and operated with regional partners, such as the El Salvadorian Navy, to display the operational readiness of innovative unmanned platforms in real-world maritime scenarios. TSUNAMI is an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) designed to be scalable and affordable, supporting diverse mission profiles such as maritime interdiction, intelligence gathering, and ongoing surveillance. The FLEX25 demonstration specifically highlighted efforts to counter persistent drug trafficking challenges, an area where TSUNAMI plays a critical role. 09 Jul 25. US DAF launches major Pacific exercise. The exercise will mobilise 12,000 personnel from the US Air and Space Forces, deploying over 350 aircraft. The Department of the US Air Force (DAF) has commenced a new series of Pacific-focused Department-Level Exercise (DLE) to enhance the country’s combat readiness. With activities spanning various locations in the US and Indo-Pacific regions, this DAF exercise represents a significant step for both the Air Force (USAF) and Space Force (USSF). The exercise is set to mobilise 12,000 personnel from the USAF and the USSF, deploying more than 350 aircraft including bombers, fighters, cargo, and refuelling planes. Additionally, it will use a range of space-based and space-enabled capabilities, encompassing space electromagnetic warfare, space domain awareness, orbital warfare, and navigational warfare.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said: “This exercise, the first of its kind since the Cold War, marks a pivotal moment for our Air Force and Space Force, bringing together airmen and guardians to bolster our nation’s warfighting capabilities. Training like this alongside the Joint Force, our allies and partners in realistic operating environments using distributed operations is how we integrate capabilities to overcome any national security challenge.”

The DLE series is intended to integrate various command exercises into a unified scenario focused on threat deterrence such as Resolute Force Pacific (REFORPAC), Resolute Space, Mobility Guardian, Emerald Warrior, and Bamboo Eagle 25-3.  The exercises will also involve numerous allies and partners with aligned interests to enhance regional and global peace and stability.

Air Force chief of staff general David Allvin said: “Exercising at this speed, scale and tempo is how we prepare for the future fight. 09 Jul 25. Military training technology specialists 4GD has significantly expanded its operations to two new urban warfare training facilities. The new Garrison Urban Skills Facilities (GUSFs) are based at Catterick Training Area in North Yorkshire and Rollestone near Salisbury. With an existing 4GD SmartFacility in operation with 16 Air Assault Brigade in Colchester, 4GD’s military training sites now represent a broad geographical footprint and can be utilised by British Army units across the UK.   In close collaboration with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), Landmarc Support Services (Landmarc) and the Land Warfare Centre, 4GD provide the technological backbone to the facilities. 4GD’s input into these facilities represents the next generation in urban warfare training. 4GD has installed its trademark SimWall and 4GAV systems across all Urban Fighting Skills Facilities. SimWall comprises a series of reconfigurable and adaptable panels designed to provide a greater variety of training scenarios. 4GAV has then enhanced the facility through the use of light, smoke and sound effects as well as detailed ‘after-action’ reviews. 4GD’s use of advanced technology serves to enhance the learning experience for the soldier. Facilities are ready for upgrading to integrate 4GD’s flagship robotic SimStriker, as already in use in the Urban Training Facility at Colchester. Both GUSF facilities have recently become operational. These urban training environments, being used by the British Army, have been designed with unprecedented levels of realism, complexity and density that replicate the range of urban environments likely to be encountered by military personnel deploying on operations. The three sites (Catterick, Rollestone and Colchester) alongside 4GD’s significant upgrading of Copehill Down Village facilities can all connect together to form a larger training area. 17 Jun 25. The Armada has successfully completed the advanced live weapons exercise SINKEX 25 conducted on June 15 and 16, 2025. This exercise was key to strengthening the operational capabilities of the Armada’s naval, air, and submarine units, while enabling training in the employment of weapon systems in a simulated, but realistic, high-intensity scenario. Several naval units participated in the exercise including the F-100 frigates “Blas de Lezo” and “Álvaro de Bazán”, the LHD “Juan Carlos I,” the S-80 submarine “Isaac Peral,” the LPD “Castilla,” and the F-80 frigate “Santa María,” as well as naval air units and aircraft from the Spanish Air Force. This provided a comprehensive training in the use of a wide range of weapon systems, and the simulation of real-life combat scenarios.  SINKEX 25 has permitted the Armada to practice in the use of several weapon systems, certifying their effectiveness. This exercise has once again demonstrated that our most modern naval units are highly capable and ready for action. Furthermore, this type of exercises contribute to spreading a message of deterrence, demonstrating Spain’s solidarity and commitment to collective defense and shared security to guarantee peace, global security, and international legality.

AURA AERO, the French aircraft manufacturer and Babcock France, part of defence company, Babcock International Group, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to jointly offer and promote INTEGRAL, the new-generation electric training aircraft with aerobatic capabilities, along with a complete packaged service. British and French troops stormed the beaches of North Devon together as they honed amphibious warfare tactics during two weeks of drills on both side of the English Channel. This joint amphibious warfare training – codenamed Exercise Catamaran– is currently taking place for the first time in seven years. The exercise is in two phases, in Devon and in the Bay of Biscay, and will test the ability of allied nations to operate effectively together in a war-time scenario. A combined Royal Navy and Marine Nationale task group of 11 warships, aircraft and some 3,000 troops are operating under the control of the joint French and British Combined Joint Expeditionary Force, which is designed for use in a wide range of crises – including the amphibious operations that are on show during Catamaran. Support ships RFA Lyme Bay and RFA Argus have been acting as the launchpad for Royal Marines operations as Green Berets from 40 and 47 Commando carry out seaborne and helicopter commando raids onto the beaches and vast sand dunes at Braunton Burrows in North Devon. French and Spanish troops are also conducting amphibious landings as allies increase their ability to operate effectively together. It is the first time since 2018 that the Combined Joint Expeditionary Force has flexed its muscles and comes at an important time for European security. Notably, the exercises take place across the anniversary of the D-Day Landings (today June 6) – reflecting the continued relevance of these operations 81 years on since the largest amphibious landing in history.

Exercise Catamaran is the amphibious element of the wider French-led Polaris 25 exercise, which sees allied nations working on warfighting skills together. Some 20 ships, 40 aircraft and 3,000 personnel are involved in the training in the Channel and Atlantic. Exercises at the NAMFI range can include any combination of Air-Breathing Targets (ABTs), such as helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, cruise missiles, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, including the Banshee or Tactical Ballistic Missile (TBM) simulations, covering short-range, medium-range, intermediate-range, and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

15 May 25. Babcock joins forces with Airbus and CAE for comprehensive multi-role helicopter offering for Poland. Babcock has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus and CAE to partner together to offer a comprehensive package of military helicopters and associated training services to the Polish Air Force. The partnership brings together three world-class service providers who will leverage their unique combined expertise on a proposal to provide Poland with powerful new defence capabilities as part of the ongoing modernisation of Polish helicopter aviation. Under the terms of the MoU, we will provide training, Airbus will lead on the platform design and build, and CAE will deliver the simulation capabilities.

Jo Rayson, Managing Director of Babcock’s Training business, said: “Our partnership presents the Polish Armed Forces with an exceptional platform backed by a proven training and support solution. Babcock is already playing a critical role on the Polish Navy’s Miecznik frigate programme and we’re pleased to be partnering with Airbus and CAE on this opportunity to deliver a crucial new defence capability.”

The Airbus H145M is the military version of the tried-and-tested, light twin-engine H145 helicopter. The global fleet of the H145 family has accumulated more than eight m flight hours and is used by armed and law enforcement forces around the world for the most demanding missions.

 

16 May 25. Leonardo pitches Trekker training helicopter to Poland. Leonardo is offering its AW109 Trekker to fulfil Poland’s helicopter training requirement, a company representative told Janes on 16 May. The twin-engined helicopter would be locally built by PZL-Świdnik and offered as “a one-stop-shop solution based on a comprehensive training system/syllabus including devices and simulation”, the representative said. The Polish Ministry of National Defence (MND) is looking to acquire 24 new helicopters and their associated simulators and training services to replace a similar number of PZL SW-4 Puszczyk helicopters. As noted in All the World’s Aircraft: Development & Production, the AW109 Trekker is a skid-equipped derivative of the AW109SP GrandNew helicopter, which is essentially an enlarged cabin version of the original AW109. With a maximum take-off weight of 3,175 kg (internal load), the Trekker version has a cruise speed of 160 kt and a range of 824 km. The MND has not disclosed when a contract will be awarded. 14 May 25. Airbus, TA team to bid Hürjet for Spain. Airbus and Turkish Aerospace (TA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) geared at bidding the Hürjet advanced jet trainer aircraft to Spain. The industrial MOU signed at the International Defence and Security Exhibition (FEINDEF) 2025 held in Madrid from 12 to 14 May follows a national MOU signed between the governments of Spain and Türkiye in December 2024.

“Spanish industry, led by Airbus, and Turkish Aerospace have signed a memorandum of understanding to identify and develop potential areas of collaboration on the Advanced Jet Trainer Aircraft, Integrated Training System – Combat (ITS-C) programme, which aims to replace the [Northrop] F-5M [/EF-5M] trainer aircraft of the Spanish Air and Space Force,” Airbus said.

“This collaboration would leverage Airbus’ design, manufacturing, in-service support, and training expertise with Turkish Aerospace’s innovative design of the Hürjet, an advanced single-engine, tandem-seat, supersonic jet trainer aircraft with advanced capabilities,” the company added.

Turkish media has previously linked a possible Spanish procurement of the Hürjet with a transfer of six contracted but unrequired Spanish Airbus A400M transport aircraft to Türkiye. (Source: Janes)

 

13 May 25. Bull Shark: U.S., Partners Train to Respond Together.  Soldiers conducted hoist operations, patrols and provided simulated security and real-world communications during Exercise Bull Shark 25-2 at Arta Beach, Djibouti. The semiannual exercise is led by the Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa, alongside Djiboutian, French, Japanese and European Union naval forces. The exercise strengthened communication and collaboration among international partners and allies throughout East Africa and to increase crisis response and personnel recovery skills. 13 May 25. Cubic Delivers Cutting-Edge Shoot-Back System to Singapore Armed Forces Training Institute (SAFTI) City. Cubic Defense announces the completion and delivery of the laser-based shoot-back systems with automatic target detection, recognition, and instrumentation to the world’s largest urban training facility, SAFTI City.

“The impressive engineering project was a collaborative effort consisting of teams from across the Asia-Pacific region, all coming together to design, manufacture, deliver, and install a range of advanced training systems for SAFTI City,” stated Russell Marsh, President of Cubic Defense. “The live training simulation systems provide world-class training results, ensuring the Warfighter of the future is well prepared for the demands of complex, urban environments.”

Cubic’s deliverables included an advanced computer vision system for tracking targets and enabling the targets to autonomously shoot-back at training forces. Additionally, Cubic provided 11,000 sensors, which consist of 8,000 building-integrated anchors with ultra-wideband indoor tracking and 3,000 shoot-through-wall modules.

Alicia Combs, Cubic’s Ground Training Vice President and General Manager, said, “We are extremely proud to have delivered the next evolution of vehicle and soldier tracking instrumentation with new enhancements included. The vehicle instrumentation system now shows crews the direction from which they were hit. 06 May 25. PNG to host Talisman Sabre 25 exercises for the first time. In a landmark move, Australia’s largest biennial military exercise, Exercise Talisman Sabre, will, for the first time, extend beyond Australian shores, with Papua New Guinea hosting key elements of Talisman Sabre 25. Chief of Joint Operations Vice Admiral Justin Jones announced the overseas debut during a visit to Igam Barracks in Lae on 23 April. It is the 11th iteration – and the first in its 22‑year history – to be conducted, in part, outside Australia.

“It’s indicative of the relationship we have with Papua New Guinea, and in this year of the 50th anniversary of independence for Papua New Guinea,” VADM Jones said.

Exercise Talisman Sabre is a biennial, multinational training activity led by the Australian Defence Force and the United States Military. Since its inception in 2005, it has focused on crisis‑action planning and contingency response, typically involving more than 30,000 personnel from nearly 20 nations across six training areas in northern and central Australia, the Coral Sea and, occasionally, overseas locales. Talisman Sabre 25, scheduled for 13 July to 4 August 2025, will see joint activities by the PNG Defence Force (PNGDF), the ADF and US forces around Wewak, Madang and Lae, culminating in an official closing ceremony at Igam Barracks. While in-country, VADM Jones met PNGDF Chief Rear Admiral Philip Polewara at Murray Barracks in Port Moresby. He also officially opened the newly refurbished National Surveillance Coordination Centre (NSCC) at HMPNGS Basilisk – a project delivered under the Australia‑PNG Defence Cooperation Program.

“The bedrock of maritime security is knowing and understanding what’s going on in your sovereign waters and the surrounding regions,” he said, praising the NSCC for bringing together PNGDF, fisheries, customs, police and other agencies to bolster maritime‑domain awareness.

The announcement came during Anzac commemorations. On Anzac Day, VADM Jones represented the ADF at the 110th anniversary memorial service at Bomana War Cemetery, honouring the Australian soldiers, sailors and aviators who fought – and fell – in New Guinea during World War II. More than 3,300 Australians and 40 members of the Papuan Infantry Battalion rest in that hallowed ground. “When you stroll among the neat rows of graves, you realise the enormity of their sacrifice,” he reflected, paying tribute to the Papuan civilians whose courage and compassion aided countless wounded soldiers across the Kokoda Track. 06 May 25. Rheinmetall cooperates with DSTA in Singapore – innovation in simulation and training systems. Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and Germany’s Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore digitalisation and experimentation opportunities in simulation and training systems to enhance training capabilities for the Singapore Armed Forces, leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud and extended reality. The MoU will also support talent development initiatives through exchange programmes, work attachments and internship opportunities at Rheinmetall, allowing DSTA engineers and interns to deepen their technical competencies. The collaboration was announced on the sidelines of IMDEX Asia 2025.

Ms Yeoh Ee-Wen, Director of Simulation and Training Systems at DSTA states: “This collaboration will enable Rheinmetall and DSTA to tap on each other’s strengths to explore advanced simulation technologies to develop more realistic, engaging and effective training capabilities. In doing so, we hope to harness the transformative potential of these technologies to enhance training for the Singapore Armed Forces.”

02 May 25.  US State Dept OKs possible sale of F-16 training, sustainment for Ukraine. The U.S. State Department has approved the potential sale of F-16 training and sustainment, along with related equipment, to Ukraine for $310m, the Pentagon said on Friday. Days before the deal, Ukraine and the U.S. signed a deal heavily promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump, to give the U.S. preferential access to new Ukrainian minerals deals and fund investment in Ukraine’s reconstruction. Ukraine has previously received F-16 jets from U.S. allies under a jet transfer authorized by former President Joe Biden’s administration. Trump has not been as eager to assist Kyiv with weapons support, instead relying on transfers authorized by Biden. Under Biden, more than $31bn worth of weapons and equipment was pledged to Ukraine under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), which allows the president to approve rapid transfers to foreign countries from U.S. military stockpiles, without having to seek congressional approval. These weapons and others purchased with U.S. funds on behalf of Ukraine and shipped via the same channels continue to flow. This sale is separate from that, and represents an actual weapons deal whose principal contractors include Lockheed Martin Aeronautics BAE Systems and AAR Corporation the Pentagon said in a statement.
