22 Apr 25. Third iteration of Project Iron Agility boosts USAF deployment readiness. Over a three-week period, the exercise involved F-16 Fighting Falcons, MQ-9 Reapers, and more. The third iteration of Project Iron Agility, a training exercise, was launched at US Air Force’s Holloman Air Force Base (AFB) to bolster the deployment readiness of airmen.   Over a three-week period, the deployment exercise will involve F-16 Fighting Falcons, MQ-9 Reapers, and the 49th Logistics Readiness Squadron, with the 49th Maintenance Group spearheading the initiative.  The objective of Project Iron Agility is to replicate deployment conditions and real-world operational scenarios.   This aligns with the Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concept, which underscores the necessity for rapid adaptability and mobility, ensuring that the US Air Force can relocate operations swiftly in response to various threats.  US Air Force Technical Sergeant and 9th Aircraft Maintenance Unit specialist section chief Dallas Harlan said: “Agile Combat Employment is about more than just Air Power.

“ACE is about ensuring that everyone in the chain of command can step up, take control, and make decisions quickly, all while maintaining seamless communication and recognising that the team dynamic is everything.”

Project Iron Agility comprises three phases: academic, planning, and execution.   The academic phase uses the Kingfish ACE simulation to challenge airmen to adapt to dynamic conditions that reflect the unpredictability of combat.  In the latest iteration of the exercise, real-time injects or immediate impact drills were introduced during the execution phase for the first time.  These drills simulate unforeseen challenges that airmen may encounter while deployed, requiring them to reassess strategies, collaborate on decision-making, and perform rapid risk assessments under the pressures of real-world operations.  The exercise includes the integration of MQ-9s, which is said to play a role in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, alongside F-16 Fighting Falcons.

Harlan said: “The MQ-9s are agile and can perform both intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and combat air support missions without risking manned aircraft.  We’re planning for the smallest, most effective footprint, and this exercise combines skills from different Air Force Specialty Codes while streamlining responsibilities so we can adapt quickly if something goes wrong.”

Additionally, logistics teams ensure smooth deployment processes from assembling supply packages to establishing communication networks.  This collaborative approach enhances the team’s cross-functional capabilities and is in line with the ACE concept.   Participants trained under Project Iron Agility gain the ability to assume diverse responsibilities. (Source: airforce-technology.com)

 

17 Apr 25. Starting this week until the end of April, additional Allied units will arrive in Estonia to participate in the defensive exercise SIIL [HEDGEHOG] 2025, which begins in May. The Allied units will arrive by air, sea and land transport, practising rapid reinforcement of the NATO battle group here using various methods of deployment operations. The largest additional unit being brought to Estonia is the 4th Brigade of the United Kingdom Armed Forces, which will be seconded by companies from the French Army. The Movement and Transportation Service of the Defence Support Command, which manages and coordinates all movements of Allied forces on Estonian territory, is responsible for receiving the Allied units arriving in Estonia. The reception of additional units is supported by the military police, the division’s logistics battalion, the air force and the navy, as well as the Northern Land Defence District of the Estonian Defence League.

“The arrival of the Allies in Estonia is an ideal opportunity to practice the entire reception chain, from the operation of ports and airports to the arrival of equipment at the destination,” said Major Toomas Pärnpuu, Commander of the Movement and Transportation Service of the Support Command. “The goal of our unit is to ensure a smooth and safe reception of the Allies on land, at sea and in the air.”

During the deployment operation, which will take place from 14 to 30 April, the armed forces of the United Kingdom and France will bring a large number of their personnel and combat equipment to Estonia, practising the rapid deployment of their forces for the defence of Estonia. The main contingent of troops will be the 4th Brigade of the British Army, which will bring approximately 1,500 fighters to Exercise SIIL 2025. The brigade includes two light infantry battalions using FOXHOUND and MASTIFF armoured vehicles and light cavalry squadron dragoons moving on JACKAL reconnaissance vehicles. In addition, snipers, artillery, anti-tank and machine gun capabilities will provide fire support, and the brigade will be supported by engineer and logistics units. The French armed forces will bring mainly marine units in addition to the contingent already present here before the start of the SIIL 2025 exercise. Due to the arrival of additional Allied units, more Allied vehicles and military equipment may be seen on Estonian roads during this period. The Defence Forces ask road users to be attentive and show understanding towards Defence Force columns moving slower than normal traffic. The Movement and Transport Service is a sub-unit of the Defence Forces Support Command, whose tasks are to organise, escort and secure the domestic transport and movements of both the Estonian Defence Forces and Allied units. In addition, the Movement and Transport Service is responsible for bringing Allied units and their equipment and equipment into Estonia and sending them out of the country. The unit also organises the transport of Estonian Defence Forces mission units, supplies and equipment to and from foreign operations. In addition, the Movement and Transport Service trains specialists based on conscripts who enter the service of the unit and continue reserve service in the same speciality. 30 Mar 25. The UK’s commitment to NATO and ability to respond at pace and at scale has been strengthened as the British Army successfully returns from Exercise STEADFAST DART – the largest NATO deployment this year, so far. Hundreds of military vehicles and equipment from 7 Light Mechanised Brigade Combat Team will arrive back in the UK through the Port of Immingham, the first operational use of a new strategic agreement between the British Army and Associated British Ports (ABP).
This new agreement allows the UK Armed Forces to use multiple ports across the country, enhancing flexibility in deploying and bringing home military assets. Previously only being able to use the to the Sea Mounting Centre at Marchwood, this new approach delivers significant strategic advantages, reducing transit times, improving efficiency, and enabling a faster and more sustainable military response in support of NATO operations.
The UK supplied the largest contribution of forces to exercise STEADFAST DART with over 2600 personnel, and 730 vehicles deploying to NATO’s eastern flank, reaffirming the UK’s unshakeable commitment to our NATO allies. 730 vehicles including Foxhound and Jackals were deployed by road, air, and sea to Eastern Europe where they conducted two exercises reinforcing the alliance’s eastern flank.
Minister for the Armed Forces, Luke Pollard said: “The success of Exercise STEADFAST DART demonstrates the strength of NATO’s collective defence and the UK’s unwavering commitment to the Alliance.
“The ability to deploy and recover our forces more efficiently is a game-changer, ensuring we remain ready to deter and respond to threats at pace and continue to make Britain secure at home and strong abroad for decades to come.”
The arrival of the MoD’s strategic RO-RO vessel, Eddystone, at the Port of Immingham this weekend, marks a major step forward in the UK’s ability to deploy at pace and at scale globally. The use of additional port infrastructure strengthens military readiness and enhances the UK’s contribution to NATO’s rapid response capabilities.
The successful completion of Exercise STEADFAST DART reaffirms the UK’s role as a leading NATO ally, ready to respond rapidly to emerging threats and contribute to the security of Europe and the wider world.

04 Apr 25. U.S. Special Ops Conduct Combined Training With Panama, Formalize Commitment. Recent security engagements between U.S. and Panamanian forces culminated in the first official U.S.-Panama special operations forces talks, Feb. 18, 2025. The talks, along with concurrent joint combined exchange training exercises, underscore a decades-long bilateral partnership and highlight the global impact of U.S. special operations forces. Since 2020, the U.S. Special Operations Command South’s continuous presence has enabled the United States to collaborate with its Panamanian partners daily.
“This enduring partnership is crucial for regional stability and reflects our shared commitment to a secure future,” said Navy Rear Adm. Mark A. Schafer, Socsouth commander.
During the meeting, Schafer thanked Frank Abrego, Panama’s public security minister, as well as leaders from Panama’s SOF community for their dedication and expertise, and for their role in ensuring the safety and stability of the region.
“The work you do is not just critical to Panama but serves as a cornerstone for regional security. Your contributions embody the highest standards of professionalism, courage and adaptability,” Schafer said.
The rear admiral added that the dialogue represented a shared commitment to addressing complex challenges — whether countering transnational threats, combating illicit trafficking, or responding to natural disasters with agility and resilience.
Schafer said these first talks are just the beginning, as they set the stage for deeper collaboration and open the door to innovative solutions. He encouraged open dialogue and curiosity.
With about 6,000 U.S. SOF personnel deployed across 80 countries, the U.S.-Panama relationship exemplifies how strong military-to-military partnerships underpin peace through strength and regional stability worldwide, said Army Maj. Trevor Wild, Socsouth public affairs officer.
“Socsouth has been instrumental in strengthening Panamanian security since the early 1990s. This enduring partnership reflects the broader U.S. SOF commitment to building partner capacity and fostering interoperability with allies and partners globally,” he said.
Wild said a prime example of the partnership is Socsouth’s critical role in training Panama’s National Border Service in counter-narcotics operations, which they have done since its inception in 2008.
Additional U.S.-Panama training ranges from small team exchanges to large-scale exercises like Panamax-Alpha, a U.S. Southern Command-supported exercise focused on Panama Canal security and interoperability; Socsouth has participated in Panamax-Alpha for more than a decade. Wild said the sustained engagement epitomizes SOF’s global presence and commitment to forging enduring partnerships.
In May 2024, Panama hosted the Fuerzas Comando 2024, a Southcom-sponsored special military exercise consisting of a skills competition and senior leadership seminar. About 450 military, law enforcement and civilian personnel from various nations attended the 18th iteration of Fuerzas Comando.
Wild said Panama’s hosting of the exercise “further strengthens this partnership” and fosters relationships, which are crucial to SOF’s global mission.
The recent SOF talks culminated in a memorandum of agreement, formalizing the ongoing commitment to shared security objectives. Wild said they also established a framework for long-term collaborative training with U.S. SOF. He added that the agreement reinforces the vital role of such partnerships in building partner capacity and enhancing interoperability.
The concurrent joint combined exchange training included advanced marksmanship, communication, small unit combat tactics, demolition and medical care. Wild said this rigorous, hands-on training, coupled with the strategic dialogue of the SOF talks, builds upon years of joint exercises and exchanges, demonstrating the depth of the U.S.-Panama security relationship.
He added that the continued presence of U.S. SOF personnel working alongside Panamanian security forces embodies the SOF’s forward deployment model and dedication to building partner capacity.
These combined efforts, within the context of SOF’s broader global engagement, demonstrate the enduring strength and continued evolution of the U.S.-Panama security partnership — a partnership built on shared values, a commitment to regional security and stability, and the recognition that strong military-to-military relationships are essential for achieving shared security goals, Wild said. 01 Apr 25. US Navy intends to select T-45C Goshawk replacement by January 2027.  The US Navy (USN) hopes to release a request for proposals (RFP) to replace the Boeing/BAE Systems T-45C Goshawk by December 2025, with a contract award planned for January 2027, according to a request for information (RFI) released on 31 March. The new RFI replaces one released in September 2023. It includes a section detailing live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) training, and strikes a requirement to operate on aircraft carriers. LVC training ranges from networking simulators such that crew members at separate locations can ‘fly’ together, to adding computer-simulated enemy aircraft into actual flights. LVC training allows crew members to practice dangerous or aircraft-stressing manoeuvres in a simulator rather than a real aircraft. It can also help crew practice against threats that are difficult to simulate, such as large-scale air battles or threats from foreign air-defence systems. Training programmes worldwide incorporate LVC elements. Aircraft will also not be required to operate from aircraft carriers, according to the RFI. Aircraft carrier operations currently mark a significant milestone in navy pilot training.

“Due to advancements in operational platform landing modes and in ground-based simulation, the UJTS [Undergraduate Jet Training System] air vehicle will only be required to conduct Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) to wave off,” the RFI stated. (Source: Janes)

27 Mar 25. Indian Navy to hold multinational exercise with African nations in April. The Indian Navy will next month hold an inaugural multinational naval exercise with ten African nations, including South Africa, off the coast of Tanzania as it strengthens ties with the continent. The Indian Navy this week announced that the maiden edition of the Africa India Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME) will be co-hosted with the Tanzania Peoples’ Defence Force (TPDF) off Dar-es-Salaam in mid-April. It will be inaugurated by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The exercise is planned to take place over six days and include participation from Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles and South Africa in addition to the co-hosts. The harbour phase of the exercise will include tabletop and command post exercises on piracy and information sharing, along with training on seamanship and visit board search and seizure (VBSS). The sea phase comprises seamanship evolutions, search and rescue, VBSS, small arms firing and helicopter operations, the Indian Navy said. Giving background to the exercise, the Indian Navy said India and Africa give immense importance to maritime security “and have reiterated their commitment to increase cooperation in tackling maritime security threats such as piracy, illegal activities including trafficking, unregulated and unreported fishing through sharing of information and surveillance.” AIKEYME “is an initiative in this direction to enhance interoperability with the navies/maritime agencies.” A further initiative will see crew from nine friendly foreign countries deploy aboard an Indian Navy vessel under the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) programme.

“Over the past ten years, Indian Navy has deepened its partnerships with maritime agencies of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), to enhance maritime security in consonance with the Government of India’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region. The Indian Navy has been collaborating with navies of IOR countries on several initiatives such as joint naval exercises, coordinated patrols, information sharing, HADR (humanitarian aid and disaster relief) efforts, capacity building and other diplomatic engagements. With SAGAR entering its second decade, and the announcement of Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions (MAHASAGAR) by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, during his visit to Mauritius in March 2025, the Indian Navy is launching its maiden initiatives of IOS Sagar and AIKEYME, which are aimed at consolidating Indian Navy’s stature as the ‘Preferred Security Partner’ and ‘First Responder’ in Indian Ocean Region,” the Indian Navy said.

The Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar initiative aims to enhance cooperation with Indian Ocean Region nations and will see the Saryu-class patrol vessel INS Sunayna deployed to the Southwest Indian Ocean Region between 5 April and 8 May with a combined crew of Indian and 44 foreign crewmembers from Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. The ship will undertake port calls at Dar-es-Salaam, Nacala, Port Louis, Port Victoria, and Male and carry out joint surveillance of the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of Tanzania, Mozambique, Mauritius and Seychelles. The foreign crew will undergo two weeks of training at various naval professional schools at Kochi in India, including training at sea. Participants are also planned to witness harbour phase activities of Exercise AIKEYME in Dar-es-Salaam.

Tarun Sobti, India’s deputy chief of naval staff, said future editions of AIKEYME will see invitations extended to nations on Africa’s west coast.

This year’s inaugural exercise comes amid growing Chinese economic, military and political influence in Africa, a surge in piracy off the Horn of Africa, and the continued threat from Houthi rebels to global shipping. Over the past decade, India has conducted numerous joint operations with African navies, as well as port visits. India has also strengthened bilateral security ties with Kenya, and for example supplied patrol boats to Mozambique. Last year it participated in Exercise Ibsamar VIII with Brazil and South Africa off the Cape coast. Africa’s eastern coastal waters lie within India’s security perimeter, which led India to deepen its relations with Kenya, Mozambique and Tanzania as well. India has established monitoring stations in northern Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles to track maritime activity and boost security in the western Indian Ocean, including the Gulf of Aden and the Mozambique Channel. Information collected from India’s African listening posts is processed at its Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region and, from there, shared with more than 60 partner nations and international organizations. 25 Mar 25. RSAF to test defence capabilities in Cope Tiger 2025.  The RSAF is contributing 26 aircraft, ten ground-based air defence systems, and more than 700 personnel to the exercise. The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) is set to evaluate?its defence capabilities in the ongoing exercise Cope Tiger, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.   The 31st edition of this trilateral exercise also sees the participation of the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) and the US Air Force (USAF).   The exercise is bifurcated into a Command Post Exercise, which was conducted from 17 to 19 December 2024, at Singapore’s Changi Naval Base within the Multinational Operations and Exercise Centre, and a Flying Training Exercise expected for 17 to 28 March 2025 at Korat Air Base and Chandy Range in Thailand.  For the 2025 engagement, the RSAF has allocated a lineup of assets including 26 aircraft and ten ground-based air defence systems, supported by a contingent of more than 700 personnel.  GlobalData Aerospace and Defense analyst Harshavardhan Dabbiru states that: “Singapore’s participation in Exercise Cope Tiger reflects its goal of military interoperability.

“The country is exploring synergies between crewed and uncrewed platforms for intelligence gathering,” he noted.

Dabbiru added: “Located near the Strait of Malacca, a critical chokepoint in global trade, Singapore is a key hub for international commerce, which also makes it vulnerable to attacks on its critical infrastructure, especially due to any unprecedented conflict between the US and China. While Singapore prioritises military preparedness, it also maintains a delicate diplomatic balance, fostering strong ties with both the US and China, the two major military powers active in the region.

“As geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific intensify, Singapore’s strategic location and defence capabilities make it a valuable partner for its regional allies. Singapore’s defence budget for 2025 stands at $17.7bn, (S$23.7bn) with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 4% from 2025 to 2030, according to GlobalData’s report titled “Singapore Defense Market Size, Trends, Budget Allocation, Regulations, Acquisitions, Competitive Landscape and Forecast to 2030.”

17 Mar 25. Four multinational military exercises involving the Latvian National Armed Forces along with Allied armed forces are to be held in Latvia. On Tuesday, March 11, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the participation of units of the National Armed Forces in four joint military exercises with units of Allied armed forces in the territory of the Republic of Latvia. It is planned that the SOLAR ECLIPSE, CRYSTAL ARROW, SWIFT RESPONSE and BALTOPS military exercises will each involve units of the National Armed Forces and more than 500 soldiers from Allied countries. SOLAR ECLIPSE is a tactical field exercise for Combat Support Specialists focusing on indirect fire support during fighting in depth, which will improve their skills. The National Armed Forces will train brigades to fight in depth, involving reconnaissance, artillery, anti-tank and command management functions. The military exercise CRYSTAL ARROW is training for the multinational brigade in Latvia and the headquarters and units of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade of the Land Forces focused on improving command management, planning and conducting operations, and conducting defence operations in conditions as close to reality as possible. During the exercise, the National Armed Forces will train in defence operations, as well as the integration of combat support and logistic elements in the execution of brigade-level operations. SWIFT RESPONSE is an exercise organised by the US Army Europe and Africa to develop intelligence capabilities of the National Armed Forces, their support to Allied infiltration operations and counter-landing operations. BALTOPS is an annual NATO exercise in the Baltic Sea region, involving full-spectrum maritime warfare operations in five operational theatres – sea, land, air, cyberspace and space. By participating in the exercise, the National Armed Forces will promote mutual cooperation, strengthen their ability to react rapidly using all types of forces, and demonstrate NATO’s commitment to regional stability and readiness to defend the Baltic Sea region if required. 21 Mar 25.  US, Korea, and Japan navies enhance interoperability.  The exercise encompassed a range of activities including group sails and advanced maritime communications. The US Navy’s Carrier Strike Group 1 (CSG-1), alongside units from the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), participated in a trilateral naval exercise.  The CSG-1 comprises the flagship USS Carl Vinson, Carrier Air Wing 2, the guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton, and the guided-missile destroyers of Destroyer Squadron 1.  The USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) UNIT/s, ROK UNIT/s, JMSDF UNIT/s joined the drills, which were held between 17-20 March 2025. The drills were aimed at advancing interoperability and readiness across various warfare areas.  The exercise encompassed a range of activities including group sails, advanced maritime communications, maritime interdiction operations training, air combat drills, and staff exchanges.   These drills are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen combined capabilities and improve integration within the Joint Force.   In a press release, US Indo-Pacific Command stated: “Enhancing trilateral security cooperation with the ROKN and JMSDF ensures our militaries and self-defence forces can operate together against any threat.”  The training exercises build upon the regular trilateral cooperation, including the January 2025 trilateral bomber escort flights.  In January, the CSG-1 led by USS Carl Vinson teamed up with the JMSDF and the ROKN for a trilateral maritime exercise.  The USS Carl Vinson, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, is based in San Diego, California, and was commissioned in 1982.  The USS Carl Vinson returned to its homeport at Naval Air Station North Island on 23 February after a four-month deployment in the Western Pacific.   The recent trilateral exercise also follows the November 2024 iteration of Freedom Edge, continuing the enhancement of doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures among the allied forces.  These trilateral naval exercises are conducted in accordance with international law, ensuring the safety of navigation and respecting the rights and interests of other states. (Source: naval-technology.com)

* UK and Norway have recently started negotiations on a major new defence agreement

Norway is one on the UK’s closest European defence partners and has been training Royal Navy sailors on their ships ahead of the biggest deployment of the year led by HMS Prince of Wales. Norway will commit frigate Roald Amundsen and tanker/support ship Maud to the UK’s upcoming Carrier Strike Group deployment. Norwegian sailors and their British helicopter crews are now ready to join the UK’s premier naval mission of 2025 after a three-week of intensive training in the fjords. More than 200 Royal Navy personnel, four Wildcat helicopters and four fast attack craft have spent the past 20 days raging around the skies and waters near Bergen alongside Norwegian counterparts. Instead of its usual NH90 helicopter, the Amundsen will operate a Royal Navy Wildcat – crewed and maintained by its personnel from 815 Naval Air Squadron. To help with integration, the Wildcats have been working with the Amundsen’s sister ship, HNoMS Otto Sverdrup, plus the Maud, while their crews have gone through damage-control training fighting fires, floods and mock crashes with the Norwegian Navy to understand their equipment and ways of working. Exercise Tamber Shield – now in its third year – has also helped develop tactics which will be employed to defend the carrier group if needed. The exercise builds on the UK and Norway’s ever closer relationship. In December, the Prime Minister travelled to meet his Norwegian counterpart, Jonas Gahr Støre in Bergen to sign a historic new strategic partnership. British P2000 fast patrol boats and Norwegian missile craft manoeuvred rapidly in the fjords, testing the ability of crews of the larger ships to fend them off – and the Wildcats to ‘target’ them with Martlet anti-ship missiles. And the workout in the challenging waters and inlets of western Norway also underscored the Wildcat’s wide-ranging abilities which will be exploited repeatedly during the carrier deploying: anti-submarine warfare, including dropping Sting Ray torpedoes, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance, and search and rescue. All participants are delighted with the outcome of Tamber Shield 2025. Working with allies such as Norway, the UK is committed to stepping up our collective security. That is why the Prime Minister announced the biggest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War, protecting British people in new era for national security. This recent training exercise is an example of the UK and its allies stepping up security across the European continent. As members of the Northern Group, both countries are committed to protecting NATO’s northern flank.

“Previous iterations of the exercise laid the foundations with our Norwegian allies, rehearsing maritime strike tactics using the Wildcat’s Martlet missile in Norway’s congested archipelago,” said 815 Naval Air Squadron’s Senior Pilot, Lieutenant Commander Oliver Brooksbank.

“This year has built on those foundations and aims to ensure readiness to deploy alongside on operations in some of the most contested waters in the world, in the defence of the UK Carrier Strike Group.”

Commodore Kyrre Haugen, Norway’s Chief of the Naval Fleet, said the three-week-workout had provided “an exceptional arena for advanced integration training between the Royal Navy and the Royal Norwegian Navy.

“It also gave us the opportunity to do the last preparations for the upcoming Carrier Strike Group deployment. Tamber Shield clearly demonstrates the unique relationship between our navies.”

Lieutenant Jack Mason, Commanding Officer of Royal Navy fast patrol boat HMS Dasher, praised the hosts for the support at base – and the opportunities afforded the P2000 boats of the Royal Navy’s Coastal Forces Squadron at sea.

“The hospitality and support from 334 Skvadron and Haakonsvern Naval Base has been superb, providing medical, engineering and logistical support as required,” he said.

“The P2000s have been able to develop advanced navigation techniques within the Norwegian fjords, whilst also developing standard operating procedures to destroy an air threat within a littoral environment.”

The training comes shortly after the Defence Secretary and his Norwegian counterpart agreed to start negotiations on a major new defence agreement. 20 Mar 25. Elbit Systems UK showcases indirect fire simulators. Elbit Systems UK (ESUK) will field its Interim Indirect Fire Simulation (IIDFS) system for the British Army later in 2025 and showcased an 81 mm mortar variant for it at the 2025 Omega Joint Military Training & Simulation Conference held in Bristol in March. The IIDFS contract was awarded to ESUK in September 2023 to provide artillery and mortar simulators to the Royal School of Artillery (RSA) at Larkhill, the Combined Arms Manoeuvre School (CAMS) at Warminster, and the Collective Training Group (CTG) for use at training locations in the UK and abroad. This 81 mm mortar variant is a surrogate weapon that consists of a mortar barrel of exactly the same size and weight as the real weapon, but with a cutout and chute at the bottom to eject a bomb after it has been loaded into the barrel mouth. Inert ammunition of identical weight and size to live rounds is instrumented to allow sensors in the barrel to detect the ammunition’s nature (high-explosive, illuminating, or smoke), the fuze setting, and the charge. The barrel is instrumented to detect elevation and direction, and ESUK has developed an emulated sight that is identical to the real thing. The system allows a mortar crew to conduct the same mode of drills as for live firing. The instrumented weapon is connected via WiFi to an instructor’s tablet. All the weapon and ammunition settings are recorded, and if appropriate, the crew’s action can be filmed for after-action review (AAR). (Source: Janes)

 

19 Mar 25. Royal Navy makes synthetic progress with Project Spartan. The UK Royal Navy (RN) continues to develop its Maritime Operational Training Environment (MOTE), and in particular is progressing its plans for the synthetic element. The MOTE consists of Project Apollo, which is providing the enablers for live training such as air and surface threat representation, and Project Spartan, which will provide the synthetic element. Both these address the external battle, but eventually the intention is to develop a realistic facility for internal platform training as well, which will incorporate both live and synthetic aspects. Speaking at the 2025 Omega Joint Military Training & Simulation Conference held in Bristol in March, Captain Dan Vincent, senior responsible owner for Spartan, explained that the project consisted of four tranches. Tranche 1 (Tr1) is the Maritime Command and Staff Trainer (MCAST), which is a constructive simulation capability that will deliver battle staff training. The RN does not currently have a permanent staff training, mission rehearsal, and assurance capability at formation level. The MCAST contract is currently out to tender with a contract award expected in May and the contract commencing in September. The contract is for five years with the option to extend for a further two, after which MCAST will either fold into Spartan Tr3 or possibly become part of the future joint command and staff trainer (CAST). 11 Mar 25. Indra has implemented the most advanced version of its NH90 simulator at the Cuatro Vientos Air and Space Force base. This is a system that offers an exceptional degree of realism and huge capacity to interoperate with other simulators, thus facilitating joint training sessions and the preparation of missions of the utmost complexity. This is the third simulator (FMS, Full Mission Simulator) of its kind developed by Indra for the Spanish Armed Forces. It’s based on the same configuration as the two simulators it has previously delivered to the Army; these are currently in operation at the Helicopter Simulation Center (CESIHEL) of the Army Aviation Academy (ACAVIET) at the Agoncillo base in La Rioja, although they have been updated with the latest technological advances. This new simulator once again relies on the use of the aircraft’s avionics equipment to faithfully replicate the cockpit and ensure that the pilots become familiar with the actual navigation and mission equipment; in particular, it enables the crew to train with the mission helmet and night vision equipment, providing a high degree of realism. This is a feature that sets apart Indra’s systems and facilitates the evolution of the simulator in parallel to any improvements that may be made to the aircraft in the future. Moreover, the simulator has an improved visual system that replicates the scenarios in which the pilots fly even more faithfully. Its database also incorporates new scenarios enabling the Air and Space Force pilots to train for maritime rescue operations, responses to natural disasters and landings and take-offs at the bases and in the zones where they regularly operate, as well as areas of operation during international missions. This third NH90 simulator developed by Indra will be evaluated in accordance with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations to demonstrate that it guarantees a performance equivalent to that of an FFS level D simulator, the highest possible level of accuracy and realism according to the European CS-FSTD(H) specifications, which the two previous NH90 simulators currently incorporate.

José María Tapia, Indra’s Head of Simulation Programs, explained that “the simulator provides great capacity to interoperate with other simulators, as it can connect through the HLA architecture standard to facilitate joint training sessions with other bases and, in particular, the two NH90 simulators at Agoncillo. This is equivalent to having a real ‘virtual manoeuvring field’ in which highly complex operations can be prepared and repeated as many times as necessary until the desired degree of coordination and accuracy is achieved”.

Practising risky manoeuvres, responding to emergency situations such as engine and tail rotor failures, and preparing to fly in conflict zones are just some of the benefits of these systems. Simulators have therefore become an indispensable tool for any modern army. The fidelity of Indra’s systems also reduces the flight hours required to train pilots in real aircraft by up to 40%, significantly speeding up their training. At the forefront of simulator development: Indra has delivered more than 200 simulators to over fifty customers in 23 countries. It also leads the world in helicopter simulation, due to the number of different platforms for which it has developed training systems. With this new delivery, it will further enhance its standing as a manufacturer of the NH90 simulator, a highly complex platform due to its very advanced systems, with which a dozen armies now operate. 07 Mar 25. British Army troops from 4 SCOTS conducted trench clearing live fire and night training at Smârdan Camp in Romania during Exercise STDT25. During Exercise STDT25 (STEADFAST DART 2025) in Romania in February troops from 4 SCOTS (4th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland) conducted trench clearing live fire and night training at Smârdan Camp, Romania. UK service personnel from the 6th Regiment Royal Logistics Corps and the 2 Rifles – Light Infantry Battalion, arrived at, and moved from, the port of Alexandroúpoli in Greece to training areas throughout Romania, during the Strategic Deployment portion of NATO Exercise STEADFAST DART 2025. Alexandroúpoli Air and Sea Ports of Departure (A/SPOD) served as a strategic location to demonstrate deployment capabilities and interoperability between participating nations. Concurrently, a second UK contingent shipped to Emden in Germany travelled overland to Romania. Exercise STEADFAST DART 2025 was intended to test and train the operational deployment of the Allied Reaction Force (ARF) to NATO Vigilance Area South-East, focusing on the planning and execution of a pre-crisis multi-domain activity that aims to reinforce the Allied forces located in Romania and Bulgaria. Throughout January and February 2025, personnel and equipment from Bulgaria, France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Türkiye and the United Kingdom have manoeuvred to NATO’s eastern flank via road, sea and air. Vietnam completes acquisition of L-39 Skyfox trainers.  The Czech manufacturer, Aero Vodochody, has said that it has completed delivery of Vietnam’s order of 12 L-39 Skyfox trainer and light attack aircraft. In a statement on 6 March, Aero Vodochody said that alongside its co-owner, Omnipol, it completed the delivery of the final batch of six new-generation L-39s to the Vietnam People’s Air Force (VPAF). The company, however, did not specify when the delivery was completed. Vietnam ordered 12 aircraft in 2021, with the first batch of L-39 Skyfoxes delivered to the VPAF in 2023. The VPAF had a total of six Skyfoxes in service by August 2024. According to Aero Vodochody, the VPAF’s “long-standing experience” with older L-39C Albatros trainers that were inducted from 1980 is assisting the air force’s transition to the L-39 Skyfox. VFAP pilots are being “helped to do so by, for example, ground-based pilot training facilities, a computer-assisted learning system, the cabin procedures simulator, and the full mission simulator”, the company said in a statement in February 2025.

“The retraining of Vietnamese pilots on the L-39 Skyfox, including instructor training, began with training the first group of pilots for approximately 250 flight hours and 350 sorties,” the company added.

The L-39 Skyfox is equipped with a full-glass cockpit with two large displays, a transparent display, and the hands-on throttle and stick (HOTAS) system. According to Aero Vodochody, its Virtual Training System (VTS) also gives the VPAF the ability to simulate “complex combat scenarios without the need for an additional aircraft in the air”. 05 Mar 25. T-7A trainer production units to arrive in early 2026. Despite revolutionary manufacturing techniques, delivery of the final T-7A Red Hawk trainer will be pushed to the start of 2026. Boeing, manufacturer of the US Air Force’s (USAF) T-7A Red Hawk future trainer aircraft, has revealed that it will begin to deliver the first production units in early 2026. Kirk Schultz, Boeing’s senior director for the Middle East, Africa, and Türkiye, confirmed the new delivery period in an exclusive interview with Airforce Technology at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2025) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.  Known as ‘Milestone C’ in military procurement parlance, this level of delivery denotes the point at which the company will transition from delivering a preliminary aircraft variant designated the Engineering, Manufacturing, and Development (EMD) platform – of which five units have been delivered to the service in the past year – to rolling out the end result, referred to as ‘production and deployment’ (P&D) platforms. Boeing produces and tests the T-7As at its site in St. Louis, Missouri. Currently, the EMD trainers are conducting flight tests at Edwards Air Force Base in California. However, the contractor has recently had to revise plans for Red Hawk. In January 2025, Air Education and Training Command, the oldest major command in the USAF, requested that Boeing provide four Production Representative Test Vehicles (PRTVs) over the next 12 months to increase service confidence in meeting certain safety requirements. Schultz pointed to what he described as the “revolutionary training capabilities” that Boeing and their subcontractor, Saab, tasked with building the aft section, used to produce the trainer aircraft. Digital twin technology – creating a virtual model of the aircraft design – was used to develop, build, and maintain the the T-7A jet trainer. Schultz emphasised that this model-based engineering saved a lot of time in man hours during the construction phase, allowing for Full-Size Determinant Assembly and other precision manufacturing techniques. Digital twin models are used to help detect, prevent, predict, and optimise the physical environment using artificial intelligence, real-time analytics, visualisation, and simulation tools. 04 Mar 25. Six allied submarines to join Nato exercise in Italy. Dynamic Manta 25 aims to increase interoperability and proficiency in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare skills. Agroup of six submarines from allied nations is set to participate in Nato’s premier submarine warfare drill, designated as Exercise Dynamic Manta 25.   This exercise is scheduled to occur in the waters off Italy’s coast from 28 February to 14 March 2025.  The event will assemble a variety of assets including surface vessels, submarines, and aircraft, along with numerous military personnel.   The Mediterranean Sea will serve as the backdrop for this intensive training operation aimed at enhancing and showcasing the collective proficiency in submarine warfare among allies.  Nato Commander Submarines US Navy rear admiral Bret Grabbe said: “Exercises like Dynamic Manta help Nato maintain the edge when it comes to anti-submarine warfare.

“By practising coordinated operations against both conventional and advanced undersea threats, Nato continues to demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding the strategic waterways that connect member states.”

For the third time since its inception in 2013, the exercise will also include collaboration with Allied maritime Special Operations Forces (SOF), further strengthening interoperability with this component.   A Greek SOF team will execute a landing from an Italian submarine as part of the exercise’s activities.  The exercise is also a live event for the Allied Reaction Force 25 (ARF25), aiming to validate the interoperability of ARF25 maritime forces at a tactical level and serve as the LIVEX certification venue for maritime forces designated as the ARF25 Maritime Component Command.   This will support the ARF25 certification plan and enhance maritime forces interoperability while implementing the latest Nato concepts and doctrines.  Participants include units, sailors, and airmen from nine Nato nations.   The submarines are from the navies of France, Greece, Italy, Türkiye, and the US, with Nato Submarine Command exercising operational control as required by the exercise scenario.  Maritime patrol aircraft from Canada, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Türkiye, the UK, and the US are set to participate, along with maritime patrol helicopters from France, Italy, and the US.   These air assets will be supported by surface ships from Greece, Italy, Spain, Türkiye, and the US.  Italy, as the host nation, is providing logistical support through its facilities in Catania and Augusta Harbors, the naval helicopter base in Catania, Naval Air Station Sigonella, and Augusta Naval Base.  In 2023, the UK deployed its Poseidon MRA1 maritime patrol aircraft to participate in Nato’s anti-submarine warfare exercise Dynamic Manta 2023. (Source: naval-technology.com)

In collaboration with technology partners EpiSci (an Applied Intuition company), Coherent Technical Services Inc. (CTSi) and Seger Aviation LLC, Top Aces has unveiled its proprietary AI-driven autonomous constructive wingman for the Red Air industry. This latest innovation is designed to replicate the flight kinematics and maneuvers of advanced adversary aircraft in a live-virtual-constructive (LVC) training environment.

“The introduction of a constructive wingman marks a revolutionary achievement and sets a new precedent in the ADAIR industry,” says Russ Quinn, President of Top Aces Corp., a USAF veteran and former Aggressor pilot. “Integrating AI-driven constructive wingmen will enhance the effectiveness of our training programs by adding complexity and mass challenges to Beyond Visual Range (BVR) targeting for our customers, while still providing the unique benefits of training against live, highly maneuverable 4th Generation fighters.”

Top Aces’ constructive wingman was integrated by CTSi into the company’s F-16 Advanced Aggressor Fighters (AAF) through the open architecture Advanced Aggressor Mission System (AAMS), and is powered by EpiSci’s state-of-the-art AI technology. The AAMS Hands-On Throttle and Stick (HOTAS) interface allows Top Aces’ pilots to direct constructive wingman formations and maneuvers, coordinating them with the company’s F-16s to provide additional BVR targeting challenges for 5th Generation fighter pilots. Each wingman is embodied in the training scenario as an adversary Link-16 track, increasing the number of BVR adversaries for compatible training segments at reduced cost.

04 Mar 25. Real-time data for real-time feedback: Charles River and ASU awarded funding to support DARPA’s OP TEMPO program, which aims to enhance team training effectiveness. An individual’s preparedness for a task need not always translate into productivity as a member of a team. To understand how the two are related and to develop reliable and objective predictors of team performance, Charles River Analytics is working on a Bio-Behavioral Team Dynamics Measurement System (BioTDMS). The effort is being led by Arizona State University (ASU), through the Global Security Initiative’s Center for Human, Artificial Intelligence, and Robot Teaming. The multidisciplinary team includes John Hopkins University and Georgia Institute of Technology. BioTDMS is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under the OP TEMPO program (Objective Prediction of Team Effectiveness via Models of Performance Outcomes).

ASU Principal Investigator Jamie Gorman states that, “BioTDMS will objectively assess team performance competencies across DoD training domains to support warfighter readiness, adaptability, and recovery. In other words, resilience.” BioTDMS uses behavioral, physiological, and neurophysiological sensors to track biological and social patterns. Proposed biomarkers to be measured include electroencephalogram (EEG), which measures neural activity; functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), which measures brain blood oxygenation as a proxy for neural activity; eye-tracking, respiration, and cardiac information; and verbal communication; among others. To acquire this data, the team will use sensors without unwieldy wiring and attachments, to make them easy for students to adopt during training.

The resultant data might be more complex to interpret, but that is part of the challenge, says Dr. Bethany Bracken, Principal Scientist at Charles River Analytics and Principal Investigator for Charles River’s BioTDMS team. The training exercises will also yield information about the suitability of sensors for various kinds of measurements. “It will be helpful as we collect data to know which sensors may or may not be useful and which correlate better with individual and team performance,” Bracken says. Translating biomarker data into team performance assessments poses an interesting challenge. “Looking for correlation between changes in the different physiological signals and effective team performance is going to be important,” Bracken says. There’s established precedent in evaluating synchrony in EEG signals between team members. “There’s some indication that people whose brains sync up together form teams that are more effective,” Bracken says.

The immediate goal of the multiphase project is to evaluate the effectiveness of training and determine if individuals can be good team members in executing logistical coordination tasks. The project will measure and collect data from individuals—early stages will have four individuals working together as a team—and compile the results to assess the team as a whole. Traditional assessments of team performance record and then aggregate individual scores, which is not always a true and accurate assessment, according to Bracken. In addition, current methods are subjective, and a team member’s readiness score depends solely on the trainer’s judgment. BioTDMS offers an objective alternative that has the added bonus of offering assessments and feedback in real time, not just at the end of training. The tool can be used to evaluate both individual team members and the effectiveness of training modules. All members consistently performing poorly at certain tasks, for example, might warrant revisions to the curricula. The tool also enables trainers to pin down where and how team members can improve. “It’s meant to give the trainers more information so that they can do their jobs better,” Bracken says.

Future phases of the project will focus on developing predictive models for team performance and assessments that can be generalized at scale. Many fields, including medicine and air traffic control, require training as part of a team. “Any situation that has teams coordinating on tasks would make a good commercialization target for BioTDMS,” Bracken says.

“We’re really excited to work with the researchers at Arizona State University who are established in the field of objective team assessment and to collect data from military personnel, the real people doing the real training,” Bracken adds.

04 Mar 25. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) achieved another major milestone in the development of Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs) by flying U.S. government-provided autonomy software aboard a company-owned MQ-20 Avenger®. The demonstration was part of the Air Force Test Center’s all-domain test series called Orange Flag 25-1, which took place February 19-21 at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The demonstration included the use of a government-provided Pilot Vehicle Interface (PVI), showcasing GA-ASI’s commitment to advancing its UCAV ecosystem through collaboration with partners and government entities and integrating cutting-edge technologies. Avenger is a jet-powered UAS used extensively by GA-ASI as a test bed for future Autonomous Collaborative Platforms. GA-ASI also demonstrated the ability to rapidly swap between autonomy systems midflight over Proliferated Low Earth Orbit (PLEO) satellites utilizing an autonomy product from Shield AI. Orange Flag 25-1 is part of the larger Orange Flag Evaluation and Demonstration Event series. This event brought together various stakeholders to test and validate advanced aerospace technologies in realistic operational scenarios. The government-provided autonomy software – known as a reference autonomy stack – was integrated into the GA-ASI Avenger and demonstrated autonomous flight operation capabilities focused on conducting air-to-air engagements. The government-provided PVI enabled seamless control and monitoring of the autonomy stack, highlighting the interoperability and flexibility of GA-ASI’s UCAV ecosystem. The Shield AI stack demonstrated autonomy skills for safe administrative phases of flight. What the flights proved was that GA-ASI aircraft can quickly go from company-written software, to government-provided, to other vendors’ software as needed. This reinforces that the new generations of GA-ASI’s UCAVs can seamlessly get upgrades as fast as developers finish them. Just as a mobile phone can get new and better features with each update, so too can new UCAVs get more capable and more versatile.

“This demonstration marks a significant achievement in our ongoing efforts to operationalize autonomy for UCAVs,” said GA-ASI Vice President of Advanced Programs Michael Atwood. “Flying the government reference autonomy stack at Orange Flag 25-1 and utilizing the government-provided PVI underscores our commitment to delivering robust and adaptable autonomy solutions for the warfighter. The successful flight at Orange Flag 25-1 further validates GA-ASI’s dedication to maturing its open standards-based autonomy software ecosystem. By adhering to government-owned and maintained standards, GA-ASI ensures rapid integration of best-of-breed capabilities from third-party providers, enhancing the overall operational effectiveness of UCAV platforms. GA-ASI continues to demonstrate its commitment to advancing autonomy for UCAVs through a series of flight tests and collaborations with government and industry partners. These efforts are aimed at developing an autonomy infrastructure that enables rapid integration and validation of tactical software applications while maintaining safety of flight and providing warfighters with the most advanced capabilities possible. 28 Feb 25. Spanish Air and Space Force picks GMV for orbital mechanics simulator. The contract extends GMV’s involvement to include training and development at various educational institutions. GMV has been selected by the Spanish Air and Space Force to deliver an orbital mechanics simulator for advanced space surveillance, command, and control training.   The contract has been awarded by the service through its Logistics Support Command’s Directorate-General of Procurement.  Space operations have become a pivotal aspect of the military sphere, with armed forces increasingly reliant on satellite systems for communication, location, and monitoring.   This shift is highlighted by the renaming of the Air and Space Force in 2022 and the establishment of the Space Command in 2023, which includes Spain’s Space Surveillance and Operations Center (COVE).  Since its inception in 2019, the COVE has been enhancing its capabilities and space situational awareness tools, with its operational workforce expanding annually.   GMV has supported the centre by supplying software tools and assisting in international space cooperation exercises, such as Global Sentinel.  As per the terms of the contract, GMV is also tasked with providing maintenance services and user training.    In 2020, the Spanish Ministry of Defense entrusted GMV with a €2.7m ($2.81m) contract to develop, deploy, and maintain the Space Situational Awareness and Control System for the COVE.   The latest contract extends GMV’s involvement to include training and development at various educational institutions and for personnel from units and organisations engaged in space operations, particularly at the COVE.  The simulator is scheduled to be operational by late 2025 and will serve as a training and operational resource for Air and Space Force personnel from 2026.   Given the project timelines and the need for specific features, the simulator will be based on GMV’s commercial software for space surveillance systems Ecosstm.  It is already in use at centres such as the German military’s space surveillance system and GMV’s commercial space surveillance operations centre.  This comes after Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles visited the Space Command (MESPA), created by merging the Aerospace Observation Systems Center (CESAEROB) and the COVE, in January 2024.   (Source: airforce-technology.com)

27 Feb 25. Exercise Justified Accord: Showcasing fast jets, firepower and our allies in Africa. At H-Hour, a breaching force from the Tanzanian army bursts from the African undergrowth in the shadow of Mount Kenya.

The soldiers clear a path through barbed wire. 173rd Airborne Brigade and a unit from the US National Guard delivers rapid fire from the flank, as two Kenyan and Somalian assault platoons clear the target. Helicopters circle overhead and two Kenyan F-5 fighter jets buzz the tower.

This was the scenario on the final day of Exercise Justified Accord – when exercising troops showed off their new skills to an audience of international military VIPs.

Justified Accord is the United States’ largest annual military activity in East Africa. Hosted this year by Kenya, Tanzania and Djibouti, the $6.5m exercise involved 1,300 troops and 15 countries.

An important part of this year’s training has been air-to-ground integration operations – where partner nations have controlled Kenyan air assets – namely their F-5 fighter jets, Cessna 208 armed reconnaissance aircraft and MD-530 helicopters.

Members of 3 Rifles took part in the exercise – sharing skills in urban operations with Kenyan, Somali and Tanzanian troops.

They spent six days alternating between drills and tactical scenarios.

“It’s been really rewarding,” Serjeant Major Marty Galdes of B Company told Forces News.

“They’re a really friendly bunch. Down in the village where we all live it’s a mixed bag of nations – all playing football, training, running – the Kenyans much better than us at running at the minute!”

“It’s like 14 days of fun,” said 1st Lieutenant Hassan of the Danab Brigade in the Somali National Army.

“The men are doing great – we are adapting to the cold!” It’s 27 degrees in Kenya and The Rifles are fighting sunburn!”

While 3 Rifles shared their soldiering drills, the partner nations bring real conflict experience.

“This exercise is really important,” said 1Lt Hassan.

“We have international terrorists in our country. So if we share information, we stand together, Africa will be great and the world will be great!”

Exercise Justified Accord involves 1,300 troops and 15 countries

The aim of training with African partners is of course to help African nations prevent terrorism at source – before it spreads beyond its borders and makes its way to the US, Europe and the UK.

“We want to help Africans solve African problems – to try and help reduce the conflict which impacts us down the line,” explained Brigadier Oli Bryant, the UK Defence Adviser in Kenya and head of British Defence Staff for East Africa.

While Kenya remains stable, there’s a lot of instability in the surrounding countries.

“If we look at business investment, it’s pretty much stopped in Ethiopia, there’s very little in Somalia, none in South Sudan, and Rwanda, Burundi and the Eastern Congo are flaring up at the moment.”

The Kenyan military is currently focused on counter-terrorism against Al Shabab in Somalia. Following Justified Accord, their soldiers will head straight for deployment along the Somali border.

The message is very much – we cannot forget Africa.

“The expectation that the West need to do everything for this region is wrong. The Kenyans in particular can solve their security problems themselves,” said Brig Bryant.

“They want investment from the West – whether military or economic. There’s lots of projects happening that are in support of their desires – rather than UK pushing our desires on them.”

Brothers and sisters in arms

One such project is CITSO – where much of the training for Justified Accord is taking place.

CITSO stands for the Counter Insurgency, Counter Terrorism and Stabilisation Operations Training Centre. It’s a multimillion-pound venture between Kenya, the US and the UK.

The UK provided the urban operations facility and will soon begin work on a headquarters and medical centre.

The Kenyan build is almost complete – consisting of accommodation and dining facilities, and the US has created an auditorium and training wing.

As with all exercises, it’s not just about sharing skills, but forging friendships.

“It’s just fantastic teamwork. Military relationships are critical going forward, and what you see here is three weeks of shared hardship and relationships that will endure for quite some time,” said Colonel Drew Conover, the director of Justified Accord 2025.

“These partners are very capable. And they’re very impressive.”

“We call them shemeji,” said Lieutenant Mohammed Rashid of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force.

27 Feb 25. Marles opens ADF weapon training simulation facility in Darwin. Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has officially opened the Australian Defence Force’s new Open Plan Weapon Training Simulation System in the Northern Territory. The land force combat training facility was funded by the Australian government through the United States Force Posture Initiative Branch and opened by the Deputy PM on 19 February. The facility features two 15-lane ranges, a close quarter battle zone and 840 square metres of floor space, enhancing combat marksmanship training.

“Darwin is home to a new state-of-the-art facility providing enhanced training capabilities for the Australian Defence Force,” a statement from Defence said regarding the opening.

“The Open Plan Weapon Training Simulation System enables soldiers to improve their marksmanship skills in a safe, controlled and realistic environment.

“The facility uses simulation to create an immersive training experience that replicates the sights, sounds and stress of combat, helping soldiers prepare for the realities of modern battle.”

Australian Army soldiers from the 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, have already been given the opportunity to conduct a room clearance at the close quarter battle area at Robertson Barracks in Darwin. Army soldiers have also conducted a simulated range practice and shooting serials at the Open Plan Weapon Training Simulation System facility. The new facility and equipment are expected to offer a realistic and immersive training experience, optimising training outcomes and helping soldiers prepare for the realities of combat, while reducing the need for live ammunition and logistical support. 19 Feb 25. Italy SAMP/T system deployed for Nato exercise. The exercise will see air defences of Lithuania and Italy function in a synchronised manner. Italy has deployed its SAMP/T long-range ground-based air defence system in Lithuania as part of the operational execution of the Rotational Nato Air Defence Model in the Baltic region.   Lithuania is hosting a joint exercise with Italian Air Defence Battalions, which focuses on training for capability redeployment, integration, unified command and control, and the execution of air operations.  The bilateral exercise serves as a practical implementation of a component of the Nato Integrated Air and Missile Defence Model in the Baltic region.  It is also aimed to enhance the redeployment capacity and command and control unity while executing air operations.   The SAMP/T system, equipped with Aster 30 missiles and the Arabel multirole radar, is designed to maintain effectiveness amidst various types of radical interference and electromagnetic jamming  It helps safeguard personnel and vital locations from aerial threats, including cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles.

Lithuania Defence Staff chief Remigijus Baltrėnas said: “The Lithuanian and the Italian air defences function in a synchronised manner, exchange data, recognised air picture and execute tasks in the common Nato air defence system. This is one more step in implementing the Rotational Nato Air Defence Model.”

The exercise also incorporates the NASAMS mid-range air defence system. Italian and French fighter aircraft, currently conducting the ANTO Air Policing Mission in the Baltics, and the Lithuanian Armed Forces Air Operations Centre, also participated.  Italy, actively engaged in its seventh Nato Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states, continues to contribute to the NATO Multinational Battle Groups and maritime patrols in the Baltic Sea.   The recent Nato Summit in Vilnius endorsed the Rotational Nato Air Defence Model, aimed at bolstering the Nato Integrated Missile and Air Defence System and facilitating a smooth transition to air defence tasks.  This model will operate concurrently with the Nato Air Policing Mission.  It is claimed to set out the framework for Allies to rotate and integrate ground-based air and missile defence systems with additional fighter jets, beginning with Nato’s eastern flank.   The Baltic Connection 24 readiness cycle in Lithuania marked the initial step in implementing this model, featuring the Netherlands’ Patriot ground-based long-range air defence system. (Source: airforce-technology.com)

 

20 Feb 25. UK supports US-led military exercises improving African security and stability. The UK Armed Forces are working with allies to deliver joint exercises with African partners to protect our people, prosperity and shared values. The UK Armed Forces have been one of the biggest contributors to two large-scale military exercises that are reaching their climax this week across the land and sea of East Africa. The United States is leading both exercises and has brought together over 2,000 personnel from the armed forces of 29 countries, including 22 African nations. The UK is responsible for delivering component parts of these multinational training exercises, under United States stewardship. The UK has been one of the biggest contributors to the Exercise Justified Accord ‘Field Training Exercise (FTX)’ which sees B Company 3 RIFLES exercise alongside a company from the US 173rd Airborne Brigade, a company of Kenya Army infantry, a troop of Kenyan Marines, Kenya Airforce fixed wing and rotary wing assets and, one infantry platoon each from Tanzania and Somalia. Exercise Justified Accord is a land multinational exercise being delivered between 10 – 21 February hosted by Djibouti, Kenya and Tanzania. It began with table-top exercises that have laid the foundation for full-scale live activity, which are now underway. The action-packed drills involve coordinating and executing ground attacks, calling in air-support, urban warfare, using drones, and breaching and clearing buildings, as well as medical evacuations. Cutlass Express is being conducted simultaneously, mostly in Mauritius, Seychelles and Tanzania. It is a naval warfare exercise which focuses on boarding various types of vessels at high speed to take command and control. The exercise challenges teams to complete scenarios which become increasingly harder and involve different types of vessels – from boarding small boats and dhows, to gaining control of larger vessels whilst under fire. In another example of the United Kingdom and the United States being long-term partners for long-term stability and security, Exercise Cutlass Express is taking place for the 15th time, whilst Exercise Justified Accord has been conducted in various forms since 1998. Further joint exercises with African partners are planned for 2025. Both exercises will ensure that the different forces involved work together to achieve combat objectives and prepare for real-life scenarios where they may have to collaborate quickly and effectively to counter threats in the region. Falling just after the election of the new African Union Chairperson, the exercises also support the African Union’s security objectives by preparing partners for United Nations and African Union missions in Africa. It serves as another example of the UK’s support for improved security not just in East Africa, but across the whole of Africa. These include the creation of the history-making, first-ever Kenyan marines and joint-training with the special forces of Nigeria and Ghana.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. and CAE announced a long-term agreement for the development and production of the next-generation mission trainer for GA-ASI’s MQ-9B SkyGuardian® remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS). The contract with GA-ASI includes a firm order for 11 mission trainers, with the opportunity to deliver up to 50 devices over the next five years. The agreement brings together two industry leaders to enhance the training capabilities for operators of MQ-9B and builds on the long-standing business relationship between GA-ASI and CAE.

Recognized globally as the reference in synthetic training for RPAS, CAE leverages the latest visualization technology in the development of the next-generation MQ-9B SkyGuardian Mission Trainers. The trainers will employ the CAE Prodigy Image Generator to provide a highly realistic training environment to replicate flight operations. Powered by a state-of-the-art gaming engine, CAE Prodigy elevates training standards through an enhanced immersive training environment, high-fidelity graphics, and physics-based simulation. This cutting-edge technology enhances the realism and effectiveness of the training, ensuring that operators are well-prepared for their missions.

MQ-9B is the world’s most advanced RPAS delivering exceptionally long endurance and range, with auto takeoff and landing under pole-to-pole SATCOM-only control and will be able to operate in unsegregated airspace using the GA-ASI-developed Detect and Avoid system. MQ-9B includes the SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian® models, as well as the new Protector RG Mk1 that is currently being delivered to the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force. The platform is building a global operator list, with procurement contracts signed with Belgium,  Canada, Poland, the Japan Coast Guard, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Taiwan, India, and the U.S. Air Force in support of Special Operations Command. MQ-9B has also supported various U.S. Navy exercises.

18 Feb 25. Ukrainian soldiers test live-fire drills and close quarter battle skills on Interflex. Ukrainian soldiers have been carrying out live-fire and close quarter battle drills at an undisclosed location on British soil. They are some of the latest volunteers to be put through their paces on Operation Interflex – the British Army’s contribution to the training of Ukrainian recruits. The five-week programme teaches soldiers the essential skills needed to fight and survive on the frontline in Ukraine and is the largest military training programme of its kind on British soil since the Second World War. Recruits are taught weapons handling, battlefield first aid, the law of armed conflict, patrol tactics and rural environment awareness during the course. It allows Ukraine to speed up deployments, rebuild its forces and scale up its resistance against the Russian invaders and their North Korean allies.  CQB combat takes place in confined, close-range environments, typically within buildings, urban settings or other areas where there is limited space for movement. The exercise focuses on engaging the enemy at very short distances, often within a few metres, where quick decision-making, agility and precision are crucial. Op Interflex goes beyond the basics, with personnel trained on UK-supplied equipment, teaching medics and a two-week course for Ukrainian military chaplains. Other training exercises include EOD training – explosive ordnance disposal – the detection, identification, rendering safe, and disposal of explosive devices. RAF instructors are also training Ukrainian pilots on their journey to learning to fly F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters. 15 Feb 25. Advanced new Taiwan jet trainer crashes in setback for programme. One of the Taiwan air force’s new, domestically developed advanced jet trainer aircraft crashed on Saturday after reporting engine failure, though the pilot safely bailed out, the military said.

It was the first major setback for the AT-5 Brave Eagle, made by state-owned Aerospace Industrial Development Corp (2634.TW) with a budget of T$68.6bn ($2.1bn). The first test flight in 2020.

29 Jan 25. LM Supports Bilateral CJADC2 Integrated Fires Capability with Aegis at Keen Sword Exercise. Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) supported U.S. and Japan Self Defense Forces (JSDF) with coordinated, joint long-range fires across maritime and land units during exercise Keen Sword near mainland Japan. The results will help shape future combined joint all-domain command and control (CJADC2) capabilities and pave the way for continued multi-lateral participation in major exercises.

During this exercise, the Virtualized Aegis Weapon System (VAWS) successfully supported the 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force (MDTF) during a naval special warfare mission to strike a land target. Aegis showcased its flexibility and interoperability by providing and receiving digital fire coordination direction among land and maritime shooters. VAWS eliminated the need for manual operations by transmitting detailed fire control orders digitally, across existing military service databases to include Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System to coordinate simulated fires.

The exercise demonstrated the ability to reliably perform enhanced C2 integration across combined services, at all levels of operation and across multiple domains. U.S. and JSDF naval and ground forces coordinated C2 data from multiple disparate sources to simulate a long-range strike from a ground battery system.

15 Jan 25. T-7 trainer production delayed again as Air Force, Boeing adjust plan. The Air Force’s new T-7 approach will allow for more testing before a production contract is awarded, which officials hope will reduce risk on the program. (Boeing)

The Air Force is further delaying the production contract for its newest trainer aircraft, the T-7 Red Hawk, and will expand its testing in a major reorganization of the program’s acquisition strategy.

The service originally planned to award Boeing a contract to build the first production T-7s in fiscal 2025 and would have bought seven jets this year. Under the Air Force and Boeing’s revised plan, the service will now award that contract in 2026, Air Force acquisition chief Andrew Hunter said in a Wednesday release.

“Acquisition programs cannot be stagnant, even when they are fixed-price,” Hunter said. “This is why I’ve directed the T-7A team to implement updates to reduce risk and increase our confidence in the aircraft design, all to ensure we can deliver the T-7A to the warfighter when needed.”

The Air Force will also buy four additional production-representative test T-7s using 2025 research and development funds that will be delivered in fiscal 2026. This will nearly double the fleet of five test aircraft now being flown at locations that include Edwards Air Force Base in California.

“We appreciate the partnership with the U.S. Air Force and are committed to providing our warfighters with the safest, most-advanced training system in the world,” said Steve Parker, interim president and chief executive for Boeing Defense, Space and Security, in a statement. “This innovative approach allows us to provide a production-ready configuration to the Air Force prior to low-rate initial production, further reducing any future risk to production. This will accelerate the path to delivering this critical capability on the timeline the Air Force needs.”

The Air Force is in the process of buying about 350 of Boeing’s T-7s, which will replace the aging T-38 Talon trainer fleet. The T-7 is a fifth-generation aircraft trainer that will make it easier to teach new pilots to fly fighters, such as the F-35, as well as bombers. Boeing has touted its digital design as an advancement in how planes are made.

But the T-7 program has been beset by design, testing and production issues that have caused its schedule to slip behind repeatedly. The service originally expected to buy the first operational T-7s in 2023, but problems with its ejection systems and flight control software pushed that to 2024, and then to 2025. It is now expected to be three years behind the original plan.

In February 2024, Boeing said it would delay delivery of its next test T-7 by several months due to quality problems with some parts. The company also said supply chain issues were forcing it to postpone the planned start of low-rate initial production by several months.

At the time, Boeing said the fifth engineering and manufacturing development jet would be delivered around March or April 2024. But in Wednesday’s release, the Air Force said the fifth jet was delivered in December 2024.

The additional test jets will allow Air Education and Training Command to speed up its test plans, as well as its development of a curriculum for flying the T-7, Hunter said. With the jets, the service will be able to stick to its plan of achieving initial operational capability in fiscal 2027.

“Procuring these [test jets] in FY25 also allows the Air Force and Boeing to improve manufacturing readiness prior to entering the production phase for the entire run of over 350 T-7As,” Hunter said. “Decreasing overlap between development, testing and production lowers the likelihood of potential costly refits of a significant number of aircraft.”

Hunter also said the new acquisition plan includes “using a management approach which incentivizes Boeing to address emergent issues that were not part of the contract that was signed in 2018 and to accelerate elements of the program.”

British and Japanese troops have kicked off military drills in Japan, as the Defence Secretary met his Japanese counterpart today (15 January) in London for talks on strengthening defence ties between the two countries.

In the meeting, Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that the headquarters for the joint UK, Japan and Italian future fighter jet programme will be established in Reading, supporting UK jobs and the government’s growth mission.

Exercise Vigilant Isles will see more than 100 UK soldiers from 16 Air Assault Brigade, the British Army’s global response force, train with Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces on the island of Kyushu. The annual exercise, now in its third year, will increase interoperability between both countries’ forces. The UK is the only European nation to conduct bilateral military training on Japanese soil.

The Defence Secretary welcomed the exercise and stressed the indivisibility between Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security in talks with Defence Minister Gen Nakatani. The two ministers also discussed progress on the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) – a joint initiative between the UK, Japan, and Italy to develop a next-generation combat aircraft – as well as the UK Carrier Strike Group’s visit to Japan later this year.

Defence Secretary, John Healey MP said: “With increasing instability across the world, it is more important than ever that we strengthen cooperation with our international partners like Japan.    Today, Minister Nakatani and I have highlighted the positive progress being made on our important next-generation fighter jet programme, to strengthen our security cooperation.There are many miles between our two nations, but the UK and Japan stand closer together than ever in support of peace and security across the globe.”

With the recently ratified GCAP Treaty entering into force, Reading will host the new GCAP headquarters, supporting the delivery of the cutting-edge stealth fighter jet. The headquarters, known as the GCAP International Government Organisation (GIGO) and led by its first Chief Executive Mr Oka Masami from Japan, will strengthen each country’s combat air industrial capability while achieving value for money.

There are currently more than 3,500 people, including engineers and programmers, working on GCAP across the UK. In December, BAE Systems (UK), Leonardo (Italy), and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co Ltd (JAIEC) signed a Joint Venture Agreement to create a new company to lead GCAP delivery. The Joint Venture will also be headquartered in the UK, alongside the GIGO, and together they will support hundreds of UK jobs. This supports delivery of the UK Government’s Plan for Change, safeguarding national security while raising living standards across the UK with skilled jobs which foster economic growth.

Later this year, the UK’s Carrier Strike Group will visit Japan as part of the flagship 2025 Indo-Pacific deployment. The group, comprised of Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, her escorts and her aircraft, will work alongside the Japanese Self Defence Forces and other partners to help defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. They will conduct a series of operations and exercises, including a port visit in Japan.

This follows the successful deployment of HMS Queen Elizabeth to the region in 2021, and the Royal Navy boasts persistently-deployed Offshore Patrol Vessels HMS Tamar and HMS Spey operating closely with Japan and regional partners to promote maritime security.

Having a high-readiness forces that can operate across land, air, and sea to respond to emerging threats is a critical component of NATO’s defensive plans. 28 Dec 24. Austria to acquire twelve M346FA Masters. Austria retired its last Saab 105Ö aircraft after a final operational flight on 31 December 2020, after nearly 50 years as the Austrian Air Force’s jet training aircraft with Fliegerregiment 3 at Horsching Air Base. In the interim, Austrian pilots were to be trained by the International Flight Training School (IFTS) at Decimomannu Air Base in Sardinia, Italy, on the T-346A.

Funding for the purchase of a new trainer was allocated in the 2022 multi-year financial framework and the “ÖBH 2032+” development plan, and the Bundesheer General Staff evaluated a number of alternatives, including the Aero Vodochody L-39NG and the Boeing/Saab T-7A Red Hawk, as well as Leonardo’s M346FA.

On 27 August 2024, Klaudia Tanner, the Austrian Defence Minister, said that she was reviewing an ‘interesting’ offer from the Italian Ministry of Defence (MoD) for a joint procurement of Leonardo M346s, with a timeline that she said was ‘not that far off.’

On 28 December 2024, Tanner announced that Austria will buy 12 Leonardo M346FA aircraft for the Österreichische Luftstreitkräfte (Austrian Air Force) under a government to government agreement, and that negotiations are currently underway, with some focus on industrial co-operation and the potential involvement of Austrian businesses, in order to bring added value to the economy and to strengthen Austria’s domestic industry.

Klaudia Tanner said that: “By purchasing these jets, we are addressing a significant capability gap in our air force. This enables us to bring 100% of pilot training back to Austria while significantly enhancing air defence. Rheinmetall supports Bundeswehr in Lithuania with Mobile Combat Training Center ‘Legatus.’ Rheinmetall has successfully tested the technical requirements for interconnected training and exercise operations of the German Bundeswehr involving its forces in Lithuania. The basis for this was the already established and validated live simulation-technology from the Army Combat Training Center in Letzlingen/ Altmark. The Group carried out a successful test of the data and radio transmission connections between the two countries on behalf of the Bundeswehr with its Mobile Combat Training Center (MCTC) “Legatus”. For this, mobile container solutions were used in Lithuania and in Germany. The simulation technologies at the MCTC enable a realistic performance of complex deployment scenarios. The aim was to establish and operate a fully comprehensive connection between Germany and Lithuania using state-of-the-art live simulation. The project thereby relied on the resources of the Combat Training Center based on the Reachback-procedure (service / evaluation). The successful test was thus aimed at supporting the forces of the Bundeswehr directly on NATO’s eastern flank. Almost all of the technical functional chains established at the German Army’s Combat Training Center, also presenting the artillery and engineer support capabilities, were available for the project carried out in November 2024. From the individual infantry and vehicle technology (AGDUS) to the operational coordination via troop radio (VHF) and the live situation map within the evaluation center (EXCON) to the input of exercise support options, almost all tests have been completed successfully. For this, it was aimed at simulating the technical solutions for the troops in Lithuania as realistically as possible in order to create ideal training conditions and prepare the German armed forces in the best possible way. The aim of the test was to make the globally unique, high-quality and validated training standard available in Lithuania. The tested functions were demonstrated for the first time using the so-called Reachback-method, in which the Army Combat Training Center in Letzlingen was connected to the mobile system in Lithuania in real-time via the system.

The Bundeswehr evaluation personnel stationed in Germany were thus able to participate live and interactively in the exercise and prepare the subsequent after-action reviews in parallel. This approach allows an optimum use of the personnel resources already available for conducting and evaluating the exercise. Thanks to precise real-time analysis and immersive simulation, military users can learn directly from their experiences and continuously improve their tactical capabilities.

“Rheinmetall is helping to ensure that our soldiers are optimally trained for the challenges of today and tomorrow. The advantage is that the system technology, already introduced at GefÜbZH, is available on the market and can therefore be deployed quickly to Lithuania,” explains Maik Nienaber, Head of System Technology Networked Training Systems.

16 Dec 24. In 2025 the Irish Defence Force will provide the Mechanised Force Protection Company (MFPC) for the EUROCORPS multinational headquarters, reports Carl Schulze. The EUROCORPS is a multinational corps-level headquarters for planning and commanding military operations of both the European Union and NATO. High Readiness Force (HRF) certified, it can be deployed ad hoc and intervene in and outside Europe in a wide range of missions at any level of intensity, ranging from crisis management, stabilisation and assistance up to full-scale high intensity war fighting.

In 2025 EUROCORPS will serve under the European Union’s Rapid Deployment Capacity (EU RDC) as Force Headquarters (FHQ) for the European Battle Group 2025 (EUBG 2025). Security for the EUROCORPS FHQ is ensured by the Mechanised Force Protection Company or MFPC. We recently visited the unit provided by the Irish Defence Force during the European Union Military Exercise 2024 (MilEx 24) held at the Bergen Training Area in northern Germany.

Like Austria, Cyprus and Malta the Republic of Ireland (Poblacht na hÉireann) is a member of the European Union, but not of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Since 1999, however, the Republic of Ireland has been an active member of NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PfP) programme and has also signed up to NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC). This said the country still maintains a historic strict policy of neutrality in armed conflicts.

The main aim of the PfP membership of the Republic of Ireland is to increase the interoperability of the Irish Defence Force with the forces of NATO member states in order to allow seamless cooperation when both have to operate together during a Peace Support Operation under United Nation (UN) mandate. Since 1955 the Republic of Ireland has been a member of the UN, and as such it has supported many UN Peace Support Operations in that time. During many of these missions troops of the Irish Defence Force closely cooperated with those of NATO member nations.

Participation in the EUBG rotations therefore has to be seen as part of the Republic of Ireland’s broader commitment to international peacekeeping and crisis management. The country has in fact been a long-standing and active contributor to European Union Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions, for example Operation ARTEMIS, EUFOR Chad, EUFOR BiH, EUTMs Mali and Somalia, EUMAM Ukraine, as well as several Naval deployments to the Mediterranean under Op PONTUS/SOPHIA and most recently EUNAVOR MED in 2023.

The participation in the EUBG 2025 rotation is the Irish Defence Force’s eighth since the European Union decided to form the EU Battlegroups (EUBG) in July 2007 and these reached full operational capability in 2007. The Irish Defence Force have previously participated in the Nordic Battlegroups 2008, 2011 and 2015, the UK-led EUBG 2016 and the German-led EUBG 2012, 2016 and 2020.

IRCON: In the EUBG 2025 Force Package the Irish Defence Force are participating with 182 soldiers. While the bulk of these belong to the Mechanised Force Protection Company, this number also includes a platoon-size National Support Element (NSE) plus ten Officers and NCOs that serve in the EUROCORPS FHQ. The staff personnel are performing a variety of tasks, such as Intelligence, Operations, Training, Logistics, Strategic Communications and Political Advisor to the EUBG 2025 Force Commander.

The lead formation for the EUBG 2025 Force Package of the Irish Defence Force, also known as Irish Contingent (IRCON), is the Dublin based 2nd Brigade of the Irish Army. IRCON falls under command of the brigade while in Ireland. 18 Dec 24. Gaming tech used to support Defence decision-making.

Dstl has worked with partners from the computer games industry to develop a new generation of tools that are helping military leaders make effective decisions.

The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) utilises the creative talents of the gaming industry to reinforce strategic and high-level decision-making by defence leaders.

Dstl and Slitherine (a computer games company) have developed a new generation of professional wargames. They provide military leaders with better tools to make effective decisions, which help make the UK safer and more prosperous.

These wargames aim to:

  • inform the military’s force structure
  • assess capability
  • support operational and contingency planning

Commercial games provide a better user experience compared with traditional analytical tools. These tools can require significant experience to operate being mainly focused on the algorithms over usability and engagement.

This novel approach has generated a 50% reduction in analysis time and costs. It has successfully been used to support military contingency planning, help wargame the British Army’s structure, as well as to analyse the potential of remote and autonomous systems and other novel technologies.

Slitherine/Matrix Pro Simulations, a UK-headquartered small and medium-sized enterprise based in Epsom, Surrey, has grown from 25 to 96 staff since its partnership with Dstl starting in 2019. Its 300 recreational products include huge maps of simulated battlefield areas and modelling of modern and historic combat operations, vehicles and weapons.

Dstl has also worked with Slitherine to boost representation of ethnic and cultural diversity in its games to reflect not only the changing face of the defence workforce but of society at home and abroad.

Last month, a joint QinetiQ-Inzpire team delivered SHARPSHOOTER, a training exercise at sea designed to improve a ship crew’s response and ensure they are as well prepared as possible for a wide range of evolving surface and aerial threats, like those they could face on operational deployment.

SHARPSHOOTER was conducted 20 miles off the coast, within the Cardigan Bay Danger Area of the Ministry of Defence Aberporth Range. The QinetiQ team based at the Aberporth Range manage the overall Range capability and provided the support to this training exercise under the Long-Term Partnering Agreement (LTPA). Using static sea targets and, for the first time at SHARPSHOOTER, dynamic aerial targets – QinetiQ’s Banshee Whirlwind, operated under the Combined Aerial Target Service contract – the exercise also included an array of synthetic training scenarios.

Originally a weapons functionality exercise, SHARPSHOOTER has evolved substantially since its inception in 2019, and is delivered for the Royal Navy, in collaboration with its Fleet Operational Standards & Training (FOST) team. The successful delivery of the exercise this time round comprised multi-domain warfare training scenarios, continually tailored to meet the requirements of the crew on board HMS St. Albans, a Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate, across the three days.

Each day started with a briefing with the ship’s captain and crew that included updates from the Met Office and National Air Traffic Services (NATS) teams based at the Range. The team then went on to deliver over 100 threat profiles across the day and into the evening, allowing the ship’s crew to practise firing at threats using live ammunition, as if on frontline deployment.

The team used a variety of static surface targets pre-positioned in the bay, as well as QinetiQ’s Banshee Whirlwind aerial targets – these being highly representative of the threats that are seen in the operational theatre. The aerial targets were launched from Aberporth Range Head and integrated with synthetic threats designed by the Inzpire team to test the teams in the ship’s operations room. These immersive scenarios enable the crew to enhance its decision-making processes under complex conditions, and to defend against a variety of threats representative of a real-life, operational environment, using the ship’s medium and close-range weapon systems.

Commanding Officer of HMS St. Albans, Cdr Matthew Teare, said: “The quality of training has been better than I have ever seen. It has been a career highlight thanks to the realism of the scenario. A fantastic experience and one which has been hugely beneficial to my ship’s company.”

Simon Galt, Managing Director, Air, QinetiQ, said: “Our aim with SHARPSHOOTER is to ensure as immersive, comprehensive and dynamic a training experience as possible, preparing the ship’s crew for the very current evolving threat landscape. Thanks to our trials planning and delivery expertise, from Range clearance through to advanced Range safety knowledge, our joint QinetiQ-Inzpire team delivered over 100 threat profiles across day and night, tailoring the complexity of each scenario as we delivered, according to the ship’s evolving requirements.

“We’re proud of the strong partnership we have with the Royal Navy and the invaluable experience delivered to its ship and crew, to ensure they remain as safe as possible in operational environments, and achieve wider maritime security for the UK and our allies.”

Nick Borbone, Director of Collective Training, Inzpire, said: “Taking the training objectives for the exercise, we designed and implemented scenarios that allowed the ship’s team to train as they would fight. We are proud of our close integration with the FOST team and the QinetiQ Range staff, which enabled us to present an array of live and synthetic threats to test the ship’s warfighting capabilities, meet the training objectives and provide evidence for after action review.”

Contracted until 2028 to facilitate and deliver multiple SHARPSHOOTER events a year, QinetiQ will continue to provide an enhanced combination of live and synthetic threat profiles at the next exercise in March 2025.

13 Dec 24. Babcock France strengthens fighter pilot training. Babcock France (Babcock) has purchased 11 L-39 “Albatros” aircraft as part of its international fighter pilot training academy.

The acquisition, from Apache Aviation, strengthens our capabilities to support the training and development of air force pilots.

The academy, located on a former military base, will offer programs including the training of future fighter pilots, L-39 pilot instructor certification, retraining of already qualified fighter pilots, and training for pilots and advanced controllers (JTAC) in close air support missions.

The courses, designed and delivered by former fighter pilots from the French Air and Space Force, will be specifically tailored to the needs of international air forces and aligned with NATO’s standard operational procedures. Advanced training will also be delivered on the L-39, based on realistic combat scenarios.

With this new operational capability, Babcock France aims to support fighter squadrons, military ships, and French and European army units with training missions in the form of aerial targets.

The L-39 aircraft acquired by Babcock France have flown previously as part of the “Breitling Jet Team,” the only civilian aerobatic team in the world to fly jet aircraft. The “Breitling Jet Team” has performed numerous demonstrations in Europe, North America, and Asia.

 

08 Dec 24. On Sunday, Dec. 8, the active phase of Exercise PIKNE concluded with a field training exercise including offensive and defensive battles. The coming week will include live-fire exercises for Allied units at the Sirgala training area.

“French Armed Forces have demonstrated the ability to deploy its units very quickly when needed, and integrate them into our operations, including covering us during mobilisation,” said Major General Indrek Sirel, Commander of the Estonian Division. “During the exercise, Reservists from the division’s air defence battery had the opportunity to practice air defence operations, which they were very satisfied with. Additionally, the Estonian Navy benefited from training alongside French ships.”

The first week of Exercise PIKNE focused on operations in northern and northeastern Estonia as well as the Gulf of Finland. During the exercise NATO practised rapid deployment of its forces to notional conflict zones, integrating them into a multinational battle group in Estonia, and collaborating to counter threats on land, in the air, and at sea. The exercise will continue with live-fire training involving French, British, and Latvian units at the Sirgala training area.

In addition, based on the proposal of the Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, Reservists from the Engineer Battalion of the 1st Infantry Brigade and the Short-Range Air Defence Battery of the Estonian Division were called up for snap Exercise OKAS from December 3-15 and December 3-8, respectively.

The Short-Range Air Defence unit, using recently acquired Piorun man-portable air defence systems, was demobilised this morning after six days of training. Reservists refreshed their skills to achieve combat readiness, calibrated their firearms, and performed tasks simulating wartime operations. The tasks included supporting the Engineer Battalion’s movement, defending the airspace over the units of Regional Command North-East (Estonian Defence League), and honing tactics against fighter jets and helicopters.

“There was a lot of action. Our active-duty commanders and Allied air force service members did an exemplary job creating an engaging exercise, which added significant value for our wartime unit,” said Junior Sergeant Toomas Erapart, a Reservist from the Air Defence Battery. “We observed real-life air assets, how quickly they change direction, and learned how to position ourselves to avoid detection. We also practised how to relocate after launching a missile to maintain operational readiness.”

“We are very grateful to the Estonian Air Force and our Allies for helping us train for the tasks air defence will conduct during wartime,” said Master Sergeant Aaron Lee Baum, senior non-commissioned officer of the Air Defence Battery (Estonian Division). “We set various challenging training goals and scenarios, including situations this team had not previously practised. Thanks to the dedication and readiness of all participants, especially the Reservists, we accomplished them all.”

The air defence training was supported by the Estonian Air Force with Robinson helicopters and the French Air Force with Dassault Rafale fighter jets.

The international military Exercise PIKNE, conducted from December 2-15, 2024, is led by the Estonian Division and nearly 2,000 troops from Estonia, Latvia, USA, France and United Kingdom participate in it. During the first week of the exercise, the focus was on deployment of units and increasing interoperability. During the second week of the exercise, a Live Fire Exercise (LFX) will be conducted at the Sirgala training area.

06 Dec 24. US Air Force’s F-35 JSE likely to reach IOC in 2025. The JSE is a simulated battlespace designed for training on fifth-generation aircraft. The US Air Force, alongside Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) and the Navy, is accelerating the development and integration of the Joint Simulation Environment (JSE) technology, aiming to surpass the capabilities of adversaries.

The JSE, a simulated battlespace designed for training on fifth-generation aircraft like F-35 joint strike fighter, is predicted for initial operational capability (IOC) by 2025 at the Joint Integrated Test and Training Center Nellis (JITTC-N) located at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

Full operational integration is anticipated by 2028, according to HII specialists.

Construction of the JSE facility at Nellis Air Force Base commenced in 2020 under the direction of the US Air Force Test Center.

In the following year, the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center completed the accreditation process for the JSE.

This milestone was marked by the completion of 64 missions in September 2023, enabling the Joint Strike Fighter Operational Test Team (JOTT) to finalise the F-35 initial operational test and evaluation.

In May, Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) engineers implemented core software within the JSE facility at Nellis Air Force Base, setting the stage for future operations.

As the primary contractor at JITTC-N, HII is responsible for conducting capability studies, integrating battlespace and platforms, and developing software.

The JSE is built upon six foundational elements, including a modular software battlespace environment that leverages existing Department of Defense modelling and simulation technologies.

It also features a physical computing infrastructure to execute the battlespace simulations, ownship simulations that serve as the system under test, and pilot interfaces such as cockpits and visual display systems.

Additionally, the JSE incorporates planning, control, and briefing rooms to support mission execution.

HII Mission Technologies Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC) vice-president Mike Aldinger said: “[JSE] is so critical for the warfighter because today’s training ranges just can’t keep up with the fifth-gen platforms and how they need to train.

“These platforms can’t train systems high—they don’t have the space required on ranges. You don’t get the threat densities, and you can’t keep up with the adversary threat evolution.”

06 Dec 24. British soldiers deploy to snowy Estonia for major Nato warfighting exercise. The British Army have joined Nato allies in Estonia for Exercise Pikne which is seeing them train under the alliance’s Vigilance Activity Brilliant Eagle.

Over two weeks, British, French, Latvia, American and Estonian troops will deploy on the Sirgala training ground in the northeast of the country to take part in the international military exercise Pikne, which translates to mean lightning.

During their stay in Estonia, British soldiers are taking part in combat drills with their allies in simulated war situations.

The exercise is being led by the Estonian Division, which is acting alongside units from the Estonian Defence Forces and the Estonian Defence League.

The main activities of the exercise, running until 15 December, will involve land and air forces.

The first week will focus on the deployment of units and practising combat activities, while the second week is planned for live fire exercises by allied units at the Sirgala training area.

Various combat and cooperation exercises involving the Estonian and French navies will take place on the Gulf of Finland.

Approximately 2,000 servicemen from Great Britain and allied countries will participate in Exercise Pikne.

“We are putting the synergy and cooperation to test across different countries, branches of service and units,” said the Chief of Staff of the Estonian Division, Colonel Janno Märk.

Col Märk said: “The French forces are practising their ability to rapidly deploy units to Estonia by air and sea at short notice and to jointly defend Nato territory alongside us and other allied units.

“The Defence Forces have long-term experience of cooperation with the armed forces of France, the United Kingdom and the United States in crisis areas.

04 Dec 24. UK defence tech disruptor, Hadean, has signed a commercialisation agreement with BAE Systems to increase the scale of Project OdySSEY deployments.

The agreement marks a significant milestone for the project, combining Hadean’s AI and synthetic capabilities with BAE Systems’ deep expertise in defence to enhance operational readiness for NATO and allied nations.

Project OdySSEy surpasses traditional synthetic training by providing users with a real-time synthetic environment directly reflecting real-world operations. The programme empowers near-limitless training scenarios across land, air, sea, space, and cyber domains simultaneously, allowing for more realistic and accurate training planning and decision-making across all domains.

Hadean will be providing the cognitive layer, using its machine learning to develop real-time pattern-of-life simulations. Being able to anticipate, prepare for, and train against realistic human actions, and evolving threats, will give allied nations a competitive advantage in the facing or new and emerging threats.

Both BAE Systems and Hadean will be exhibiting at I/ITSEC in Orlando, Florida between 2nd and 6th December. The businesses will be undertaking demonstrations to show attendees the future of synthetic training at this year’s event which is focussing on assuring deterrence through integrated training and readiness.

04 Dec 24. Elbit Systems UK (ESUK), a defence technology business, has completed the System Acceptance Trials (SAT) for the mobile component of the Joint Fires Synthetic Trainer (Mobile) (JFST(M)). JFST delivers high-fidelity immersive training for troops who direct fires from artillery, combat aircraft, helicopters, or Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles – known as Joint Fires Operators. With the completion of these final trials, ESUK has delivered its sixth and final JFST training platform type to Front-Line Commands.

This milestone means that ESUK has delivered all six capabilities of the JFST platform to the British Armed Forces. ESUK previously delivered five of the six different variants of JSFT systems to bases across the UK including at the Royal School of Artillery, Larkhill, and the Air Ground Operations School at RAF Leeming. The systems fielded include a 285-degree dome for JTAC training, versions to provide mounted and dismounted training as well as the capabilities to provide the training needed for personnel to conduct battle group level exercises. To date, JFST has delivered over 12,000 hours of training to British Armed Forces and NATO allies.

The inaugural deployment of JFST(M) training has been delivered to 3 Commando Brigade Fires Personnel in Scotland. With further training exercises planned, the family of JFST training solutions offers users a fully immersive experience, allowing users to sense, decide and control joint effects without the need for expensive military assets – bearing cost efficiencies for all branches of the Armed Forces and boosting training capacity.

The JFST training system is part of ESUK’s solutions-based approach to working with the British Armed Forces. 02 Dec 24. I/ITSEC: Saab reveals UAV live training developments. During the I/ITSEC event in Orlando, Florida, Saab has revealed a UAV training capability which can act both as an asset or threat during military exercises. Saab has also recently received an order from an undisclosed customer to deliver a number of prototype UAV live training systems. Saab’s new UAV trainer is used as an add-on within live training. It connects to Saab’s exercise control software EXCON and it can be equipped with sensors and simulated weapons as desired by the customer. It also has a laser target system, meaning it can both virtually engage participants as well as simulate getting shot down by ground forces, thereby enabling evaluation of soldier skills and tactical behaviour.

“We see the increased use of military UAVs on the battlefield. The need for a solution that makes soldiers ready to detect, engage and hide from these is crucial. Saab’s UAV live training capability has already received a huge interest from the existing live training customers. It was initially offered to the UK Armed Forces, who became our first customer using Saab’s instrumented UAV service for live training scenarios,” said Joakim Alhbin, head of Saab’s business unit Training and Simulation.

Designed to replicate aerial threats from opposing forces, the Saab UAV trainer, utilising an ‘off-the-shelf’ UAV platform, can be engaged and defeated whilst capturing troop activity on video and is able to drop ‘virtual munitions’ on soldiers on the ground.  All data is recorded and used to support objective measurement and feedback to improve counter-UAV survivability.

Saab’s military UAV trainer is initially offered as a service, where Saab supports drone operation during training scenarios. In addition, a large number of customer trials have been ordered and delivered, further confirming the strong interest for this capability.

28 Nov 24. Joint Expeditionary Force successfully completes Exercise JOINT PROTECTOR.

Exercise Joint Protector has concluded in Latvia.

The Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) successfully concluded a multinational exercise in Liepāja, Latvia, demonstrating its ability to deploy and respond to an unfolding near real crises scenario in the Baltic and Nordic region.

In Ex JOINT PROTECTOR 24, more than 300 personnel deployed to Latvia and worked seamlessly with staff in the UK at Strategic Command, the JEF’s Operational Headquarters in Northwood HQ.

The exercise scenario, developed by the Command’s Integrated Warfare Centre, included a range of actions designed to simulate the rapid response needed in the face of potential conflict and security challenges in the region; testing how quickly they can deploy together across Europe to tackle emerging threats. They practiced their ability to deploy with key equipment from their home countries and their collective response.

Combining a partnership of 10 nations like-minded Northern European nations – Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK as the Framework Nation – the JEF share a commitment to contribute to international security and ensure regional stability.

Major General Tom Bateman CBE, UK’s Standing Joint Force Commander and JEF Operational HQ Commander, emphasised the value of such exercises in confirming the readiness of JEF forces and their ability to work cohesively with NATO:

As a high-readiness deployable HQ Exercise JOINT PROTECTOR 24 has been a real success, it has improved the integration of Participant Nations and has allowed us to work more effectively together.

25 Nov 24. UK-led JEF completes Exercise Joint Protector in Latvia. The focus was on testing the rapid deployment of the JEF across Europe to address emerging security challenges. The UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), comprising ten Northern European countries, has concluded Exercise Joint Protector in Latvia.  This exercise aimed to bolster Nato’s eastern flank and demonstrate the alliance’s capability to defend Latvia from potential threats.  The focus was on testing the rapid deployment of the JEF across Europe to address emerging security challenges.  Following two and a half years of conflict, one of the major impacts of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been the rising deployment of drones and the evolution of counter-drone technologies, underlining the crucial role of Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS)… The exercise included all nine partner countries – Iceland, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, and Finland – alongside the UK as the designated Framework Nation.  Military personnel from the nations practised deploying from their home countries to various locations in Latvia, bringing essential equipment with them.  The ability to rapidly deploy is seen as crucial for the JEF’s operational effectiveness.  For the first time, Ukrainian military officers attended the exercise, reflecting the alliance’s intent to learn from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.  The Ukraine-Russia war has caused hundreds of thousands of casualties, bns in aid to Kyiv, and the delivery of tens of thousands of military assets since February 2022.   The collective vision for the JEF’s future is to be a cornerstone of Northern European security, supporting member nations and contributing to regional and multidomain defence activities.

25 Nov 24. Italian Air Force receives three P.180 Avanti EVO+ aircraft. The Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana AMI) has received into service three Piaggo P.180 Avanti EVO+ aircraft, the manufacturer announced on 25 November. The light utility and liaison twin-turboprop aircraft were delivered to the AMI Air Transport Training School in Pratica di Mare, Rome, and are the first of 15 that will be received as part of a wider modernisation programme.

“After completing the test flights, Piaggio Aerospace delivered to the Italian Air Force three P.180 Avanti EVO+, the … nine-seater aircraft designed and assembled by Piaggio Aerospace in its facilities located in Villanova d’Albenga and Genoa,” the company said.

EVO+ is a military variant of the EVO specifically designed for the AMI, which features a new dual-zone digitally controlled air-conditioning system, a new digitally controlled pressurisation system, a new cabin interior, and a new braking system. The 15 aircraft are being acquired under a programme which also includes the retrofit of some of the 14 aircraft currently in service (there are 19 P.180s in service with the wider Italian armed forces). The upgraded Avanti I airframes are to be redesignated Avanti II+. Piaggio Aerospace expects to deliver one more new aircraft and a retrofitted one by February 2025. With the demanding certification exercise EUROPEAN FALCON 24, the multinational combat unit of the European Battlegroup has now demonstrated its high level of operational readiness and combat power. In the combat training centre on the Letzlinger Heide, the multinational force showed that it is capable of asserting itself, even against an equally strong enemy. It is five in the morning. Lithuanian and German reconnaissance troops are on their way to clear the way for their own forces. They belong to the EU-Battlegroup (EUBG), the European Union’s combat-ready crisis response force. At an intersection, the soldiers take up position behind an earthen wall. They discover a barbed wire barrier. What they cannot yet see: Behind the wire lurk not only mines designed to target combat vehicles, but also a booby trap containing 45 kilogrammes of high explosives. If it is not discovered, the passage of their own vehicles will end in disaster. The 4th Company, consisting of Dutch paratroopers, has now been tasked with opening this barrier in order to create the conditions for the further attack. To do this, the paratroopers have German and Dutch engineers with them who are specialised in detecting and neutralising such charges, but also in planting them themselves. Creating stability and security: Suddenly, shots are fired. The enemy is monitoring the barrier and is firing at the approaching troops to prevent them from opening the barrier and driving through. But amid deafening volleys from heavy machine guns, our own forces still manage to find and defuse the booby trap. The situation is resolved. Now the combat unit, whose core is made up of infantrymen from the 231st Mountain Infantry Battalion (Gebirgsjägerbataillon 231) from Bad Reichenhall, can advance further to clear an airport in the north of the training town of Schnöggersburg and house by house in the town itself of the enemy. They will then create security and stability on site until the follow-up forces arrive. An association of eleven nations: The Mountain Infantry Battalion 231 belongs to the Mountain Infantry Brigade 23. With four companies and the command post, it currently forms the core of the EU-Battlegroup. The infantry battalion will be reinforced by additional Bundeswehr forces as well as soldiers from Hungary, Lithuania and the Netherlands. The force will then be expanded into a powerful multinational battlegroup and will be deployed as a rapid crisis response force of the EU for one year from 1 January 2025 to be available in the highest state of readiness. The soldiers must be ready to move within five to ten days. The battlegroup is the core of the EUBG 2025, with additional support forces there will be a total of up to 5,000 soldiers from eleven nations. In addition to Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden are also participating.

“By leading the European Union Battlegroup, Germany is visibly assuming responsibility for the EU ’s ability to act and react as well as for its credibility in the EU area of security and defence. We mountain troops are highly flexible and are able to cover a wide range of conflict potentials with the equipment we have.” Colonel Holger Peterat, Commander of Mountain Infantry Brigade 23 ‘Bavaria’.

National and alliance defence is fundamentally provided by NATO whose military orders could realistically be assigned to the EUBG. These could be, for example, initial operations carried out by the EU. In an emergency, multinational operations are also possible for the rapid stabilisation of crisis regions.

The commander of the combat unit, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Werner, explains: “In the combat training centre, we have the 231st Mountain Infantry Battalion together with supporting units of Electronic Warfare, CBRN Defence, the medical service and operational communications as well as multinational forces from the Netherlands and Lithuania. In this way we are proving our high level of combat capability and showing that we are ready for the EU ‘s mission, ideally suited and fully operational.”

Protecting the population: The infantrymen from Bad Reichenhall can also fulfil their core mission of national and alliance defence thanks to their enormous resilience. Mountain infantrymen are a combat troop, belong to the light forces in the army and can be deployed in every conceivable region of the world due to their high level of mobility, flexibility and professionalism. They are specialised in infantry fighting at high altitudes, in the mountains, in hot and even Arctic regions in summer and winter. This also includes holding their own against a professional, equal military enemy and against irregular forces such as terrorist opponents.

At the end of this year, the troops will then move to the Bergen military training area to train under the leadership of the Force Headquarters, embedded in the overall structure of the EUBG, to practice. The Force Headquarters in turn will be formed from forces of the Eurocorps in Strasbourg. After the preparatory year in 2024, the readiness year in 2025 will include another year of exercises and training at the base as well as further exercises in Europe in order to maintain the high level of training. 23 Nov 24. Ten nation military partnership successfully completes major exercise in Latvia. The UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force partnership has completed an exercise on NATO’s eastern flank. Britain and close European allies have exercised rapidly bolstering NATO’s eastern flank, demonstrating the Alliance’s ability to defend Latvia from any threat.  The UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), a partnership of ten northern European nations, has successfully concluded Exercise Joint Protector, across multiple locations in Latvia, on NATO’s eastern flank over the last month.  The exercise is a vital part of testing how quickly the JEF can deploy together across Europe to meet rapidly emerging threats. 26 Nov 24. British Army and KDF Test Cutting-Edge Military Tech in Joint Training. The British Army and Kenya Defence Forces conducted a joint training exercise (Ex. Haraka Storm Bravo) in Laikipia County using new state of the art training technology to better monitor and train soldiers – a vital part of the UK-Kenya defence partnership to make the region safer and more secure.

The British Army and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recently concluded a six-week joint military training exercise dubbed Haraka Storm Bravo. The annual exercise, which ran through October and November 2024, took place at the Ole Naishu training area in Laikipia County.

This year’s exercise introduced advanced Tactical Engagement Simulation (TES) equipment: an innovative training tool designed to enhance tactical effectiveness. TES technology uses computerised vests that record and transmit tactical data, allowing control units to track and analyse the position, movement, and actions of each soldier during field exercises. Key metrics such as firing accuracy, speed, and direction are captured and reviewed to refine tactical techniques and improve overall operational efficiency.

The exercise was witnessed by senior UK and KDF officials, including: the UK Defence Adviser, Brigadier Olly Bryant; KDF General Officer Commanding (GOC) Eastern Command, Major General Kutto; Commander 2 Mechanised Brigade, Brigadier Kamoiro; Kenya Army Chief of Training, Brigadier Mzee; and Commanding Officer 5KR, Lieutenant Colonel Mulwa.

This joint training exercise was part of the UK-Kenya defence partnership, which enables up to six light infantry battle groups to conduct annual training in Kenya. These exercises are designed to prepare troops for global deployment.

Brigadier William Kamoiro highlighted the benefits of TES in improving training outcomes: “The technology to review the exercise, enabled by the use of TES equipment, not only introduces realism into the exercise but also saves the battle group from wasting live ammunition as the team perfects their skills. The British Army’s 2 Rifles and KDF’s Bravo Company of 5KR have demonstrated well-trained battle groups who know what they are doing and how to target and clear the enemy to achieve the set objective. I can confidently report that through the joint exercise, the soldiers are ready for deployment.”

Major James Athow-Frost, overseeing BATUK’s Tactical Operations, highlighted the unique opportunities Kenya’s terrain offers: “Kenya offers an incredible terrain for the British troops to train – hot and arid locations and living in basic camps in the bush. This enables the units to be prepared for operations in demanding terrain. The combined training offers the two battle groups an opportunity to exchange experience and use technology like the TES program which brings all battle groups’ activities into a virtual world.”

Major General Kutto acknowledged the mutual benefits of the collaboration: “There is a lot of knowledge and skills that we borrow from each other. The demonstration by the two battle groups working together to clear the enemy is a clear indication of the symbiotic relationship between the two forces. The enemy that we are facing is amorphous, it keeps on changing and we must also be able to match and even be smarter. The introduction of TES technology is a huge step towards this.

Kenya remains one of UK’s leading defence partners in East Africa. The UK and Kenya share a long and proud history of military cooperation, working together across land, sea, and air to address shared challenges and ensure the safety of their citizens.

Beyond military preparedness, the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) also invests in community projects, collaborating with National and County Governments, non-governmental and community organisations to address community needs.

  • BATUK TacOps designs the training module, ensures the training happens safely and the training areas are safe for training, and that the troops leave the training areas in good condition as they met them or even better, and that no human being or animal is harmed during the exercise.
  • The British Army has contracted Ravenswood Solutions Kenya to provide the TES equipment. The Company works with other contracted companies like Cubic to help bring in wider capabilities for the exercising troops.
  • The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) supports BATUK in setting up structures and systems that ensure physical safety in the training areas. DIO works closely with Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS), Community elders and local rangers to enable authorised training to be conducted safely. Before any training takes place, DIO coordinates with landowners, managers, and communities to ensure the training plans are understood.

19 Nov 24. UK marks 1,000th day of full-scale invasion of Ukraine as training programme hits 50,000. The UK is expanding military support for Ukraine with funding to provide new drone capabilities, on the 1,000th day of Putin’s illegal full-scale invasion.

  • New UK military support of £7.5m for attack and surveillance drones
  • Comes as allies invest further money in drone coalition, co-led by the UK and Latvia
  • Number of Ukrainian recruits trained on British soil under Operation Interflex passes 50,000

The UK is expanding its military support for Ukraine with a major funding package to provide new drone capabilities, as the defence against Putin’s illegal full-scale invasion enters its 1,000th day.

It follows confirmation from Defence Secretary John Healey MP on Monday that the number of Ukrainian armed forces recruits trained by the UK on British soil has passed 50,000. The Operation Interflex training has been delivered since the summer of 2022 and is now supported by 12 other countries.

The Prime Minister and Defence Secretary have been clear that the defence of the UK starts in Ukraine and are committed to stepping up and speeding up deliveries of military support.

It comes as spending by the UK Government on military support for Ukraine is now at its highest ever level since the start of the full-scale invasion – spending £3bn this year and every year for as long as it takes, as well £2.3bn from profits on frozen Russian assets.

Today, the Government is announcing further military support of £7.5 m of funding for new attack and surveillance drones, which will be invested through the drone coalition led by the UK and Latvia and drawn from the £3bn annual funding pool. This is on top of the £120m of funding announced by the Prime Minister last month for Ukraine’s Navy and maritime capabilities which will fund uncrewed surface vessels, and maritime ISR drones.

In a show of unity between the UK and its allies, the drone coalition will receive an additional £16m from countries including Germany (£10m), Canada (£3m), and Luxembourg (£3m) who have pledged to purchase drones through the coalition. This brings the total fund to £67m, including a total of £15m from the UK.

This additional support provides another significant boost for the capabilities of Ukraine’s Armed Forces in the face of Putin’s illegal war of aggression. Over the weekend, more than 120 missiles and 90 drones were launched by Russia at Ukraine’s infrastructure, killing civilians in eastern Ukraine.

The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Adrian Bird, will also be delivering a recorded intelligence update on social media, providing a comprehensive overview of the conflict. This includes:

  • More than 700,000 Russian casualties (dead and wounded). The daily average of Russian casualties in the first 17 days of November 2024 has now risen to 1,531.
  • Russian equipment destroyed includes 3,558 tanks, 147 helicopters, 132 fixed wing aircraft, 1,750 artillery and more than 8,500 armoured vehicles. A total of 26 Russian vessels have also been destroyed or damaged in the Black Sea
  • Iranian military aid to Russia has included the supply of hundreds of one-way attack drones, artillery munitions, and extensive support to Russian domestic drone production. Iran has also delivered Fath-360 close range ballistic missiles to Russia.

The Minister for the Armed Forces will visit Operation Interflex training in the East of England today (Tuesday). He will meet some of the 50,000 troops trained by the UK and its allies – Canada, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, New Zealand, Lithuania, Australia, Romania, Netherlands, Kosovo and Estonia.

Defence Secretary, John Healey MP, said: “The UK has stood side by side with our Ukrainian allies since day one of Putin’s illegal full scale invasion – leading international support, training 50,000 recruits and supplying weapons, drones and other crucial military kit. 1,000 days after Putin initiated his full-scale invasion, our commitment to Ukraine remains ironclad. President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people will have our fullest support for as long as it takes. As we look towards a winter of continued Russian attacks on military and civilian targets, it is critical that international partners and allies come together to back Ukraine and ensure that Putin does not succeed.”

On Wednesday, Parliament will debate the Second Reading of the Financial Assistance to Ukraine Bill, which will confirm the UK’s £2.26bn loan to Ukraine for further military equipment as part of the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) Loans to Ukraine scheme.

Ukraine continues to demonstrate the effectiveness of drones on the battlefield, using inexpensive drones to destroy hundreds of comparatively more expensive Russian tanks and vehicles. By using surveillance drones, the Ukrainians have also been highly successful at using their artillery to destroy Russian artillery positions.

The UK has also been running two competitions with industry to design, develop, and procure advanced new drones, including highly agile first-person view (FPV) drones that can manoeuvre past Russian defences.

The first of these competitions is now complete, with contracts set to deliver thousands of FPV drones in the coming months. The second competition is still open for expressions of interest from industry, and in addition to FPV drones will provide a new capability – interceptor drones which can destroy incoming attack drones and ordnance.

Minister for the Armed Forces, Luke Pollard MP, said: “The training of more than 50,000 Ukrainian recruits on UK soil since the start of Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 is an achievement which cannot be overstated. Supported by instructors from 12 other nations, Operation Interflex has harnessed the world-leading skills and experience of the British Army to provide Ukraine with a reliable source of trained soldiers. Interflex is the perfect example of how we are working side-by-side with allies to bolster the security of Ukraine, which in turn boosts the security of Europe and the UK. Additional funding for naval equipment will provide a boost to Ukraine’s maritime security and support its activities in the Black Sea, where its forces have had significant success in countering Russia’s Black Sea Fleet – allowing it to reopen a commercial grain export corridor vital for Ukraine’s economy.”

Ukraine has damaged or destroyed more than 25 per cent of Russian Federation Navy vessels operating in the Black Sea, and the additional funding would support them in purchasing hundreds more aerial and sea-based maritime drones, as well as surveillance drones to protect the grain corridor.

The Defence Secretary visited Ukraine on his second day in the role, where he announced a new package of artillery guns, hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition, and nearly 100 Brimstone missiles alongside President Zelensky, and to speed up deliveries promised by the previous government.

Since then, the UK has also signed a major defence industrial agreement with Ukraine, allowing to draw from £3.5bn of export finance to procure more military equipment from UK companies, and announced a package of additional air defence missiles.

Operation Interflex has been funded and extended to run through until at least the end of 2025, having provided an invaluable flow of trained soldiers to bolster the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

As one of the largest multinational training efforts of its kind, Operation Interflex came following the initial programme of training provided by the UK, under Operation Orbital, which trained more than 22,000 personnel between Putin’s illegal invasion of Crimea in 2014 and the start of his full-scale invasion in 2022. Australia, Indonesia conduct Exercise ‘Keris Woomera.‘ The Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Indonesian National Armed Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia: TNI) have teamed up for Exercise ‘Keris Woomera’, the Australian Department of Defence (DoD) announced on 3 November. The drills take place after the two countries signed a key defence agreement in August that enables greater military interoperability. The DoD said in a press release that the exercise is the “largest combined joint activity” by the ADF and TNI in recent history, with approximately 2,000 personnel participating in the drills. The DoD said the exercise features a combined joint live-fire exercise consisting of tanks, artillery, infantry, and attack helicopters. The DoD also said 35 TNI personnel will deploy onboard HMAS Adelaide in Darwin to conduct integration training as part of the drills. It added that the exercise, which started in Indonesia, will feature air, maritime, amphibious, and follow-on land operations along with humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
However, the DoD had not responded to Janes request for additional information about the exercise at the time of publication. Australia’s Chief of Joint Operations, Vice Admiral Justin Jones, said, “By training together, our forces build upon shared tactics, techniques, and procedures to enhance interoperability and readiness to respond to shared security challenges in the region.” The exercise is also part of Australia’s ‘Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2023′, which is its largest engagement activity in the region. 25 Oct 24. The 1st [Estonian] Infantry Brigade’s integration exercise BOLD DRAGOON recently took place at the Defence Forces’ Central Training Ground. From October 14 to October 20, the 1st Infantry Brigade’s exercise BOLD DRAGOON took place at the Defence Forces’ Central Training Ground, the main purpose of which was to train the new Allied Battle Group that started its service with the brigade after unit rotation at the beginning of October, practising together with the 1st Infantry Brigade.
“In order to stand shoulder to shoulder on the battlefield, we need to understand each other well and, of course, be able to cooperate. The exercise gives us an excellent opportunity to practice all of this in order to harmonise the procedures if necessary,” said Major Kristjan Karist, the responsible operator of the exercise from the headquarters of the 1st Infantry Brigade.
The main objectives of Exercise BOLD DRAGOON were to integrate the Allied Battle Group into the 1st Infantry Brigade and to practice mutual cooperation. The exercise started with conducting offensive and defensive battles at company level, where cooperation and manoeuvres of different types of weapon systems were practised, and continued with a tactical exercise, where battalion operations were practised within the framework of a brigade. To create a more realistic situation, laser simulators which were added to the weapons were used to imitate the combat situation as faithfully as possible by recording the hits made; this provides accurate and honest feedback to the participants and ensures better training as a whole. In total, nearly 1,000 defence personnel took part in the exercise.
The exercise, which ended on Sunday, was led by the 1st [Estonian] Infantry Brigade. In addition to the Allies, soldiers from the Scouts Battalion, the Anti-Tank Company of the 1st Infantry Brigade and the Defence Academy Hiking Centre will participate in the exercise . 25 Oct 24. UK and US carrier groups flex muscles in North Sea as major exercise ends.

One of the most powerful maritime forces in the UK’s arsenal joined forces with a US counterpart to demonstrate allied resolve, unity and cooperation in the North Sea.

While at sea for Exercise Strike Warrior the UK Carrier Strike Group (UKCSG) – spearheaded by HMS Prince of Wales – and the US Carrier Strike Group 8 (CSG8) centred on the USS Harry S Truman, joined forces to deliver a powerful statement of NATO’s ability to project power from the sea.

Britain’s biggest warship hosted the US Strike Group Commander Rear Admiral Sean Bailey, who watched UK F-35B Lightning stealth fighters launch from her flight deck – then join the Truman’s F/A-18 Super Hornets and an E/A-18G Growler conduct a flypast of the two naval groups.

The UK Carrier Strike Group comprising HMS Prince of Wales, associated air wing, escorts, supporting vessels and almost 2,000 personnel, has been at sea for training as part of exercise Strike Warrior, one of the final milestones in the preparations of the Strike Group to undertake a global deployment to the Indo-Pacific region in 2025.

Lightnings from the UK’s new front-line strike fighter unit, 809 Naval Air Squadron have been operating from the deck of HMS Prince of Wales, training for strike missions that has included the dropping of live ordnance onto the Cape Wrath range in Scotland.

The exercise scenario was choreographed by the UK’s Joint Training and Exercise Planning Staff based in the Royal Navy Warfighting Centre in Portsmouth Naval Base with the activity of the Strike Group in response to the training scenario being directed by the staff of Headquarters UK Carrier Strike Group, embarked in HMS Prince of Wales.

Involving warships and support vessels from the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary along with elements of the British Army, Royal Air Force and NATO warships from six nations – Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Portugal and the UK – Exercise Strike Warrior has seen air and naval power tested in challenging tactical situations.

The RAF supported the anti-submarine defence of the Carrier Strike Group through provision of Poseidon P8 maritime patrol aircraft while other NATO aircraft supported F35s in defending the strike group from “aggressor” aircraft, to fend off threats from the sky.

Between these large scale set-piece activities, participating ships have conducted their own training – fighting fires and floods, dealing with mock casualties, replenishing with fuel and stores while underway. The end goal being to hone both individual and collective skills to forge a powerful yet flexible trike group able to deploy around the globe.

“Strike Warrior has delivered a short and intense period of training for the UK Carrier Strike Group, testing the group all the way from individual responses to a fire or flood through to complex long-range F-35B missions involving live weapon drops in support of Royal Marines ashore,” said Captain John Cromie, Deputy Commander UK Carrier Strike Group.

“Throughout the Strike Group has taken the opportunity to work alongside NATO partners participating in activity concurrent to Strike Warrior, confirming ed our procedures and interoperability with key Allies and demonstrated the UK’s continued and absolute commitment to NATO.”

Commander Nick Smith, 809 Naval Air Squadron’s Commanding Officer, said the maiden embarkation had been “phenomenally successful”, laying “firm foundations” for when his F-35s re-join the task group in 2025 on its first deployment.

He continued: “The training teams have surpassed their targets with 19 pilots completing carrier qualifications within the first weeks of the deployment and flight deck teams receiving their authorisations to safely operate on the deck, both day and night.

“Our integration has also spread beyond the ship, demonstrated by the successful release of live weapons on targets at Cape Wrath; weapons prepared by the ship’s company, loaded and delivered by 809 NAS and 617 Squadron engineers and pilots, controlled by Royal Marine Commandos on the ground.”

Portsmouth-based destroyer HMS Dauntless led the air defence of the strike group. Her Commanding Officer Commander Ben Dorrington said his team had been tested by “a broad range of threats, including enemy air sorties, anti-ship cruise missiles, and the challenges posed by electronic warfare” thanks to the scale and scope of the exercise – and proven the ship’s ability to protect the carrier group.

“The comprehensive training applied during Strike Warrior has thoroughly prepared Dauntless’ ship’s company to handle everything from fire and floods to high-end warfighting.”

Strike Warrior concludes this weekend, further training will be conducted in UK waters before the Carrier Strike Group deploys in 2025.

Since departing Portsmouth last month HMS Prince of Wales has sailed 1,500 conducting training. Her aircraft have conducted 71 sorties accounting for 210 hours (nearly nine whole days) airborne, and the F-35s have dropped four Paveway bombs on the Cape Wrath range during a live ordnance exercise.

Strike Warrior concludes an intensive early autumn of training for HMS Prince of Wales and her 750-strong ship’s company. Her Commanding Officer Captain Will Blackett said it had been “hard work – but all of our benefit. We have made huge strides – from improving our ability to deal with emergencies internal to the ship, to refining task group defensive tactics, all the way through to accurately delivering live munitions on simulated targets at reach. This ship is amazing – and my people are even better.”

Among those benefiting was junior rating Able Seaman Thomas Fobbester who works in the carrier’s operations room who described the exercise as “a very valuable learning experience”.

Thomas added: “This is my first Ship and first time getting involved in this sort of thing. Camaraderie with the lads has been a key point. The air defence exercises have been the best, as the highest activity for me, but there’s also a lot of time living and working with the same people so getting to know them during our downtime has been really good.” (Source: https://www.gov.uk/)

The following statement can be attributed to Ms. Madeline Mortelmans who is currently performing the duties of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy, Plans and Capabilities. Her office is lead for both pillars of AUKUS within the department and is in close partnership with all of the DOD stakeholders.

“Secretary Austin has said several times in the past that our alliances and partnerships are our greatest global strategic advantage. Specifically, AUKUS presents a unique opportunity for Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States to foster a more capable, more combined force of the future. And in so doing, we will strengthen deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.

Through AUKUS, we are working across the full spectrum of capability development, generating requirements, co-developing new systems, deepening industrial based collaboration and ultimately delivering advanced capabilities to our forces. AUKUS Pillar 1 focuses these co-development efforts on delivering an advanced nuclear power submarine capability through the optimal pathway.

Pillar 2 focuses on the development and delivery of emerging technology. AUKUS Pillar 2 is designed to harness the combined industrial and innovation bases of the tri-lateral partners to ensure that our forces are equipped with cutting edge interoperable military capabilities and prepared to face down aggression in whatever form it may take.

In Pillar 2, we’re building a more capable combined joint force for the future, working across the full spectrum of capability development and we’re already delivering. This year, we’re advancing our undersea warfare capabilities by expanding our ability to launch and recover uncrewed underwater systems from torpedo tubes on current classes of British and US submarines, that will increase the range and capability of our undersea forces.

We’re integrating the Stingray lightweight torpedo into the P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, which will support our forces in being more interchangeable while providing resilience to munitions stockpiles across AUKUS nations. At the same time, we’re also implementing a fundamental shift to more closely integrate our systems and break down barriers to collaboration at every stage and in every part of our systems.

We’ve welcomed collaboration with the International Joint Requirements Oversight Council or I-JROC, a critical collaborative forum to identify and validate joint and combined requirements. The I-JROC will ensure that we have prioritized combined and joint solutions from the very start and that the capabilities we develop under Pillar 2 address some of the most pressing challenges our forces face.

A cornerstone of AUKUS Pillar 2 remains the opportunity to leverage the best of our defense industrial bases in combined innovation communities. This year we executed the first office innovation challenge focused on electronic warfare. We announced the winners last month and our teams are working to develop a robust two-year plan to increase the collaboration between and among our innovation centers of excellence.

By the end of the year, we’ll have convened meetings with the Advanced Capabilities Industry Forum in each country. Engagements provide an opportunity for representatives across government and industry to exchange ideas and deepen industrial based collaboration.

This week we’re here in Jervis Bay to observe the Maritime Big Play, which is an important demonstration of AUKUS in action. The Maritime Big Play is a series of integrated trilateral experiments and exercises aimed at enhancing capability development, improving interoperability and increasing the sophistication and scale of autonomous systems in the maritime domain. These experiments address the need to expand the reach, capability and capacity of our forces in the maritime environment through the use of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve been testing and refining the ability to jointly operate uncrewed maritime systems, to share and process maritime data from all three nations, and to provide real time maritime domain awareness to support decision making. The Maritime Big Play allows AUKUS partners to practice fielding and maintaining thousands of uncrewed systems, gaining valuable experience operating in coalitions to solve realistic operational problems such as improving undersea situational awareness.

Our work will inform AUKUS partners’ understanding of how crewed and uncrewed capabilities can be integrated to get an operational advantage, and where we can achieve cost savings and improved efficiencies in acquisition, maintenance and sustainment activities.

Maritime Big Play isn’t just a demonstration for demonstration’s sake. It’s our goal to transition cutting edge technologies into capabilities that give our forces decisive advantage as quickly as we can. This year, Japan joined the Maritime Big Play as an observer. We look forward to deepening their participation in the coming years. All of this together underpins a more strategic approach to ensure that AUKUS and like-minded partners can operate new autonomous uncrewed systems more effectively as a coalition force from the start.

This is only the first in our series of experiments and demonstrations. Over time, Maritime Big Play will grow and evolve to reflect the emerging technologies, new systems and new operational requirements. I want to emphasize that AUKUS is dynamic. It will grow, it will evolve as the world changes around us, and as we break down the old barriers to cooperation and inevitably discover new ones.

22 Oct 24. US Army seeks information on contracted helicopter pilot training, potential UH-72A replacement. The US Army has released a request for information (RFI) seeking to learn how contractors might provide initial flight training for helicopter pilots, including potentially replacing the Airbus UH-72A Lakota as the service’s primary flight training helicopter.

The RFI, issued on 8 October, requests information on both government-owned, contractor-operated and contractor-owned, contractor-operated helicopters.

“The UH-72 is [a] very capable aircraft. It might be too capable to teach a basic aviator,” Major General Clair Gill told reporters on 17 October at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) conference in Washington, DC.

“We look at what we’ve trained on in years past – and we have been through a couple generations of aircraft; they’ve been simpler aircraft, and if that’s what trains a better aviator, then I’m interested in that,” Maj Gen Gill added, referring to the Bell UH-1 and TH-67, as well as the Schweizer TH-55, all of which were single engine; TH-55 and -67 were derived from popular civilian training models.

“The second thing that I want is an affordable model [of helicopter],” added Maj Gen Gill. “I’m agnostic about the platform, but [the UH-72] is an expensive aircraft to operate.” (Source: Janes)

 

23 Oct 24. Exercise Southern Tiger bolsters Australia-Malaysia ties.

Hosted by the 10th/27th Battalion, the Royal South Australia Regiment (10/27RSAR), the exercise took place across several locations in Australia.

Australian and Malaysian military personnel have reinforced their partnership through Exercise Southern Tiger.

The two countries are approaching the 70th anniversary of Australia’s diplomatic presence in Malaysia in 2025.

In 2021, Australia and Malaysia upgraded their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Hosted by the 10th/27th Battalion, the Royal South Australia Regiment (10/27RSAR), the exercise took place across several locations, from 30 August to 24 September.

These include Cultana Training Area, Murray Bridge Training Area, and Edinburgh Defence Precinct in Australia.

During Exercise Southern Tiger, a sub-unit from the Malaysian Army was assigned to an Australian Army unit.

This strengthened interoperability and cultural understanding.

Malaysian Army 14th Mechanised Battalion commanding officer Azllan bin Zainul Abidin said: “This was a very good opportunity to have my soldiers exposed to Australian culture, Australian Army culture, it’s training and training environments.

“Seeing the differences between our two armies and the way we train will be of great benefit to all those involved.”

The training focused on foundation war-fighting and combined arms tactics, culminating in a live-fire in complex combat scenarios.

Australian Army commanding officer 10/27RSAR Lieutenant Colonel Aaron Jackson said: “It’s been a great opportunity for us to train alongside our Malaysian partners. Individual soldiers getting time on the tools is always a good thing. Soldiers are out there training, getting better at their core trades.

“Meanwhile, the soldiers and officers that organised the training and were involved in planning the exercise also benefited from increasing their understanding of how Army is contributing to implementing the National Defence Strategy.”  (Source: army-technology.com)

 

17 Oct 24. SAS Amatola returns to the fight with successful Ibsamar VIII. The sea phase of the multinational maritime Exercise Ibsamar VIII has wrapped up successfully off the Cape West Coast, showcasing the combined efforts of South Africa, Brazil and India.

This latest iteration of the naval drill involved South Africa’s SAS Amatola, India’s INS Talwar and Brazil’s BNS Defensora, which departed Simon’s Town Harbour on 10 October after an alongside phase from 7 to 9 October. Upon departing the safety of the harbour, the ships immediately faced simulated attacks by fast incoming attack craft, setting the stage for a series of complex manoeuvres and exercises over the week-long training period.

The drills included close-proximity ship manoeuvring, helicopter operations, replenishment at sea (RAS) exercises, seamanship evolutions and air defence activities with two South African Air Force Hawks which had deployed to Air Force Base Langebaanweg. The fleet also simulated warfare against each other as well as a live Gunex evolution using a “Killer Tomato” added to the range of training.

For SAS Amatola, the exercise marked a significant milestone. After years of inactivity due to maintenance issues, the ship was brought back into service earlier this year through the dedicated efforts of its crew. Initially, the extensive work required for safe operational readiness had been underestimated, resulting in the cancellation of a planned ambitious voyage in July to participate in the Russian Navy’s anniversary parade in St Petersburg. However, since then, Amatola has regained operational momentum by conducting border safeguarding patrols under Operation Corona off the West Coast of South Africa and participating in exercises with a visiting Chinese frigate.

Reflecting on the challenges and achievements during the exercise, Jones emphasised the remarkable growth of the crew, especially the younger sailors.

“The most rewarding part as a Captain is seeing how my young people have developed over the six days at sea,” he said. “Their knowledge base, competence and confidence have grown significantly.”

Continuing, he said: “We don’t get the opportunity to do these exercises often, so operating at sea in a multi-threat environment with other ships in close proximity really hones the skills.”

“We have skilled warfare operators on board who operate various systems,” Jones noted. “During the exercise, we operated in both Combat State One and Two threat environments, staying in a tense warfare setting for several hours. This involved conducting surveillance, compiling a recognised maritime picture and defending ourselves against simulated attacks. You can’t fully replicate the real thing, but this time it was real, and they did it.”

The crew also gained valuable experience in RAS operations, which involved conducting tight formations and transferring gear between ships.

“These are tasks we don’t often get to perform, so from a command perspective, it was great exposure,” Jones explained, “The precise pilotage required for station-keeping demonstrated the capability of the teams on board.”

The exercise also strengthened the interoperability between the participating navies.

“The culmination of very close manoeuvres showed that we have all grown in our ability to operate together,” Jones observed. He highlighted the camaraderie that developed among the younger sailors, who bonded with their counterparts from the other nations.

“Seeing the youngsters who have never been involved in these types of exercises bond with others from different countries was a positive outcome. When we exchanged personnel or brought visitors on board, it was clear that these experiences left a lasting impact,” he said.

For the Commanding Officer of South Africa’s only operational frigate, this was Jones’ first time leading an exercise of this nature in command.

“It involved a lot of sleepless nights, but it was worth it,” he said. “It provided a clear picture of what is required when operating a warship at sea, and I am proud of how well the crew performed.”

The successful completion of Exercise Ibsamar VIII has not only bolstered the maritime skills of all involved but also deepened the ties between South Africa, Brazil and India. As the ships returned to Simon’s Town on 16 October, they did so with enhanced capabilities and stronger bonds, ready for the next chapter in their ongoing efforts to ensure regional maritime security.

Following a brief rest period for the crew, Amatola is set to undertake a three-month anti-piracy mission in the Mozambique Channel as part of Operation Copper. These deployments underline the ship’s return to active service and its ongoing contributions to regional maritime security.
