18 Apr 24. RapidFlight, a pioneering integrated designer and mass manufacturer of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), is working with the United States Department of Defense (DoD) in support of the Replicator initiative, which outlines the DOD’s plan to field thousands of autonomous systems across multiple warfighting domains.

18 Apr 24. UPDF, Norinco establishing UAV workshop in Uganda as defence indigenisation efforts continue. Uganda is making great strides building up its local defence industry, ranging from armoured vehicle assembly to aircraft maintenance, with unmanned aerial vehicles now in the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF’s) sights.

Uganda’s Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and China’s Norinco (North Industries Corporation) recently signed a cooperation agreement and this resulted in defence minister Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempjjja together with the Executive President of Norinco, Yang Xiaoqing, groundbreaking a ‘comprehensive’ unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) workshop in Nakasongola at the end of last year.

The two also commissioned a Joint Research and Innovation Centre, and ANFO explosives production line for explosives company Kyoga Dynamics, a joint venture between Uganda’s National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) and China Wanbao Engineering Company, a Norinco subsidiary.

Ssempijja thanked the Norinco delegation for their willingness to share knowledge in building the defence capacity of Uganda and said that research and innovation are key to the development of Uganda’s defence capacity.

Xiaoqing said the commissioning and groundbreaking events marked a milestone in the history of the cooperation between Uganda and Norinco. “In six months, a workshop dedicated to the final assembly, testing, maintenance and training of UAVs will rise up here and will be a turning point for Uganda’s take-off of the UAV industry, a new important field for defence modernisation,” he said.

He added that this cooperation will enhance Uganda’s military capabilities, drive economic development and elevate Uganda’s international influence.

The Chief of the UPDF, General Wilson Mbadi, said that partnership with Norinco in the expansion of aerospace and defence facilities is a demonstration of the ever-growing relationship between the Republic of Uganda and the Peoples Republic of China. “As two cooperative sides, we have made major breakthroughs in the theme of developing and modernising our forces to create internal effectiveness and efficiency that has well been tested internally and in the region,” he said.

He commended Norinco for their commitment and speed towards developing and setting up the facilities which will go a long way in creating capacity for the UPDF.

Uganda has been making great strides in developing its local defence industry and in August 2018 officially launched an Armoured Vehicle Manufacturing and Assembly Facility in Maga Maga. Its first product was the Mamba-based Nyoka armoured personnel carrier, created in collaboration with South Africa’s Twiga Services and Logistics via its Ugandan sister company Impala Services and Logistics. Manufacture and assembly of the vehicles began in 2013 under a transfer of technology agreement.

In 2021 the UPDF commissioned the locally manufactured Chui (Leopard) infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), which is based on Twiga’s Nyati. The Chui is manufactured by the Armoured Vehicle Manufacturing and Assembly Facility.

Then in July 2022, the UAE-based Streit opened a new armoured vehicle factory in Uganda in partnership with the National Enterprise Corporation. In mid-October 2021, NEC announced the partnership with Streit Group for the manufacture of armoured vehicles in Nakosongola in central Uganda. The new company, NEC-Streit Uganda Ltd, provides a variety of security solutions, including through technology transfer. Mbadi said the armoured vehicle plant would produce vehicles for Uganda’s military, police, VIPs, and regional requirements.

On the aviation side, Uganda in January 2022 commissioned a helicopter maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility. The first locally overhauled Mi-24 helicopter was commissioned in April the following year.

The facility is a joint venture by the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) and Pro-Heli International, a Russian company. According to Pro-Heli, the company has been partnering with Uganda since 2016. Its core products and services are the overhaul of Mi-17 and Mi-24 helicopters.

The state-owned NEC is the commercial arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF). The NEC was established in 1989 by an Act of the Parliament of Uganda. Its investments and activities include agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, services, and defence industry projects and companies. 12 Apr 24. Military Drone Collaboration for Maritime Defense and Security. Technology company Red Cat Holdings, Inc. will distribute its Teal 2 drones to PowerBuoy® and WAM-V® platforms, enhancing maritime surveillance capabilities.

Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. (OPT) is working with Red Cat Holdings, Inc. (Red Cat) to enable organizations using OPT’s PowerBuoy® and WAM-V® platforms to deploy Teal 2 drones.

Operating in any ocean depth over 20 meters and up to 3,000 meters (3 km), the ocean-deployed PowerBuoy floats over the point of use, moored. Through its Marine Advanced Robotics subsidiary, OPT offers the WAM-V — or Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel — an innovative class of autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) that uses an articulating suspension system to minimize structural loading.

OPT, an industry leader in innovative and cost-effective low-carbon marine power, data, and service solutions, assert that the PowerBuoy can act as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) which constantly recharges itself by harvesting energy from the waves.

Red Cat state that its collaboration with Ocean Power Technologies and integration with OPT’s maritime domain awareness solution adds to its robust tactical ecosystem of partnerships with leading companies, providing leading solutions to clients for their tactical missions.

17 Apr 24. USN begins European Triton operations. The US Navy (USN) has commenced operations of its Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton Broad Area Maritime System (BAMS) in the European theatre, with the first unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) departing Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella in Sicily for its first sortie on 17 April. The milestone was logged by online flight tracking services about two weeks after the USN announced in late March that the first of an undisclosed number of UAVs had arrived in its Sixth Fleet area of operations. Derived from the Block 30 RQ-4N naval variant of the RQ-4 Global Hawk high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) UAV, the Triton has been developed to provide the USN with a persistent maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capability in support of a full range of military operations that includes signals intelligence, communications relay, and search and rescue. 16 Apr 24. Unmanned surface and aerial vehicles move from experimental to operational considerations. Military planners and operators are beginning to consider unmanned surface and aerial vehicles in a more operational light given recent successes in experiments and in the battlespace, according to defence analysts. One case in point is the Long-Range Unmanned Surface Vessel (LRUSV) the US Marine Corps (USMC) plans to use as a semi-autonomous vessel for extended travel and transporting loitering munitions that accurately track and destroy targets on sea or land and serve as an intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platform, according to Bryan Clark, senior fellow and director of the Center for Defense Concepts and Technology at Hudson Institute.

“Marines are looking at that for unmanned logistics,” Clark told Janes on 31 March in an interview in advance of the Navy League Sea-Air-Space global maritime exposition held from 8 to 10 April in National Harbor, Maryland.

17 Apr 24. China has greatly expanded its UAV efforts over the past decade and is now offering a broad range of UAVs in the export market

This article is drawn from Teal Group’s World Military Unmanned Aerial Systems, 2023/2024 Market Profile & Forecast annual sector study.

China has had an active UAV program since the mid-1970s. However, data on the actual extent of UAV production is nearly non-existent, and there is no information on the procurement objectives of the People’s Liberation Army or Air Force. A report from Taiwan estimated that about 280 UAVs were in service in mid-2011. Given the extremely active development programs in recent years, the current inventory is presumably much higher.

Chinese tactical UAVs have been used in traditional roles such as artillery spotting, and some are deployed in army divisions in “Instrument Reconnaissance Companies” of the usual divisional reconnaissance battalions. Another application has been for route security for the mobile IRBM launchers of the PLA Second Artillery strategic missile force. There has been a wide range of experimentation with UAVs in recent years, including naval applications.

Chinese aerospace firms have been displaying an increasing number of UAVs at international trade shows in recent years as well as at the bi-annual Air Show China in Zhuhai. It is becoming increasingly difficult to separate conceptual designs from actual production efforts, as many Chinese firms display models and illustrations for UAVs that have no firm government or corporate backing. Around 2014, ASN, part of the AVIC consortium, claims to have manufactured 90% of the existing Chinese inventory, which if true, suggests that most of the existing force consisted at the time of small, tactical UAVs. Most published sources suggest that most of the UAV force up to this point was under Army control, which may account for the predominance of TUAVs.

An additional source of confusion over Chinese UAVs is the use of different names for the same system by the multiple marketing agencies. Export agencies such as CPMEIC, Poly Technologies, ALIT, and Xinshidai have all marketed the same CASC UAVs, but often under different names. So, for example, the CH-3 UAV developed by CASC, have been marketed variously as the PW-3 and the CH-3, as well as by its name Rainbow, derived from its Chinese name Cai Hong (Rainbow). Norinco has marketed Chengdu UAVs under its own names, usually starting with “Sharp” such as the Sharp Eagle, confusingly renamed (again) as the Sky Saker.

Teal Group Analysis

China has greatly expanded its UAV efforts over the past decade and is now offering a broad range of UAVs in the export market from mini-UAVs through large armed drones. As mentioned above, one of China’s most prominent UAV designers stated that sales in 2015 had reached the “hundreds of ms,” largely through the sale of armed UAVs such as the CH-3 and CH-4. More recently, China has had significant success in the export of Predator/Reaper type drones such as the Wing Loong-1 and -2. If this trend continues, China could emerge as a rival to other major exporters such as Israel. China has been able to encroach in areas of traditional US aerospace sales such as the UAE, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia due to constraints on US sales because of MTCR and other arms-control restrictions. Chinese firms seem to sense that this niche creates a significant opening for worldwide aerospace sales, and they have started to try to exploit this situation by offering an extremely wide range of armed UAS. Recent sales of the newer UAV types such as the CH-3, CH-4 and Wing Loong series have totaled about 170 from 2016 to 2019.

These exports have had their fair share of problems with the Iraqis finding that their Chinese drones had a low serviceability rate, and Jordan selling off their Chinese drones to Libya for undisclosed reasons. This is not altogether surprising due to the novelty of the technology which may take some time to mature. Over the past few years, Turkey appears to be taking over the niche discovered by China by offering its combat-proven Bayraktar TB2 drone.

Chinese UAV developments are confusing outside China, since the main source of information comes from the several competing export agencies such as CPMEIC, Norinco, Poly Technologies and others that advertise at international aviation shows. These agencies often use different names for the same UAV system creating the impression of a very large number of different types.

The Chinese UAVs cleared for export have become better known in recent years. However, the domestic market for military UAVs in China remains largely hidden.

Any assessment of Chinese acquisition of military UAVs is bound to be extremely speculative, given the lack of quantitative data on the Chinese programs. China has shown an interest in keeping abreast with international developments in military technology, and the US use of UAVs in Afghanistan since 2001-02, and in Iraq since 2003, has no doubt been noticed. China is likely to deploy some number of tactical UAVs over the next decade to modernize and expand the PLA’s force. Of more interest will be the effort by the PLAAF to become more deeply involved in endurance UAVs. There has been an assortment of internet photos, suggesting that the testing of MALE and HALE UAVs is well underway, so deployment of these types in the mid-term seems likely. There have been reports of VTUAVs deployed on frigates in the South China Sea, and these may be testbeds for future acquisition. So far, the one area not well exploited by Chinese product offerings has been the field of mini-UAVs, which is very surprising given the number of Chinese commercial mini-UAV offerings. 18 Apr 24. Ghost Shark to deliver a sovereign, autonomous undersea capability under ASCA Mission 0. Anduril Australia’s autonomous undersea capability Ghost Shark will become Mission 0 for the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA), providing the Royal Australian Navy with a long-range autonomous undersea warfare capability.

Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy has today (18 April) announced that the Ghost Shark program, jointly developed and funded by Defence and Anduril Australia, has been selected for ASCA’s Mission 0.

The program is now expected to provide the Royal Australian Navy with long-range autonomous undersea capabilities, operating across intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike mission profiles.

The program will fall under the federal government’s $7.2 bn commitment for development and acquisition of subsea capabilities, the Commonwealth confirmed.

According to a release from Minister Conroy, 10 local companies have partnered with Anduril Australia for the delivery of the capability with 42 benefiting across the supply chain.

Minister Conroy explained that the Ghost Shark program demonstrates the benefits of Defence and industry collaboration.

“Ghost Shark is an exemplar of how Defence and Australian industry can move at speed to develop new sovereign capabilities to respond to the challenges before us,” Minister Conroy outlined.

“By transitioning Ghost Shark to ASCA, a clear statement is being made about Defence’s commitment to the program.

“ASCA is focused on speeding up the transition of innovation into capability that will give our Australian Defence Force an edge, while creating more jobs for Australians commercialising the technology.”

The Ghost Shark program is an example that public-private partnerships can ensure Australia overcomes Defence’s most prominent challenges, Professor Emily Hilder, head of ASCA said.

“ASCA missions address strategically directed priorities that focus on rapidly delivering asymmetric capabilities to Defence,” Hilder said.

“The co-funded and collaborative contract between Anduril Australia and Defence is a fast and innovative way for Defence to pursue new technology that directly relates to capability needs. ASCA wants to hear from Australian companies with solutions to Defence’s biggest challenges.”

16 Apr 24. Israel’s BlueBird Aero Systems to Open Drone Production Site in Morocco. Israel’s BlueBird Aero Systems, which specializes in the design, development, and production of Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and peripheral equipment will open a drone production site in Morocco.

Ronen Nadir, CEO of BlueBird Aero Systems told Zona Militar that the company has already established the local production facility that will start operations in the near future.

50% OF Blue Bird’s shares have been purchased by Israel aerospace industries (IAI) one of the country’s main defence companies.

The Israeli ministry of defence has recently received a new shopping list of Israeli made defence systems. This as a result from the deterioration of relations between This country and neighboring Algeria.

Morocco re-established relations with Israel as part of the US-brokered Abraham Accords in late 2020, and since the relations between the two countries have been upgraded.

Even before the Abraham accords Israel and Morocco had “special defence relations ” that were kept secret.Morocco needs advanced weapon systems and the new reactions with Israel opened some very lucrative options for Rabbat.

In February 2023, Israel and Morocco concluded a $500 m deal  to provide the kingdom with the Barak MX air and missile defence system manufactured by Israel aerospace industries (IAI).  Morocco also purchased the Skylock Dome anti-drone system from Israel in 2021.

Barak-MX is a modular air defence system and is designed to address missile and aircraft threats. It operates both in marine platforms and land, and belongs to the Barak missile family

After purchasing 150 eVTOL drones made by Israeli company Bluebird, Morocco is evaluating more types of Israeli made unmanned air systems.

The deal included a large number of the Spy X loitering weapon systems made by Israeli company Blue Bird.

The SpyX has a 50Km operational range, 1.5 hours mission time, the SpyX is integrated with a revolutionary belly-mounted dual-sensor stabilized payload and advanced video tracker, to enable autonomous and accurate electro-optical guided attack on the target. To increase its effectiveness, the 2.5Kg warhead (like combined Anti-Personnel, Anti-vehicles, or Anti-tank warheads) is loaded to the SpyX Loitering Munition just before launch, as per the required effect-on-target. 15 Apr 24. AV Enters Teaming Agreement with Parry Labs to Develop Modular Next-Generation Long Range Reconnaissance UAS. AeroVironment (AV) has entered into an exclusive teaming agreement with Parry Labs, a leader in Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA), to architect, develop, deliver and integrate digital engineering, software, and mission system hardware into AV’s upcoming P550 uncrewed aircraft system (UAS), purpose built for the U.S. Army’s Long Range Reconnaissance (LRR) program.

Parry Labs’ team of MOSA leaders and digital systems experts have created a foundational platform using an open and intelligent software stack, SWaP-C optimized hardware, and a digital engineering environment for collaborative build, test and integration. 12 Apr 24. Aselsan to start work on second Deringöz AUV variant. Aselsan has outlined plans to start expanding its family of Deringöz autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) this year as the first prototype under development progresses through its trials programme. Speaking to Janes at the Undersea Defence Technology (UDT) 2024 conference and exhibition in London on 9 April, an Aselsan spokesperson told that the first prototype is making good progress following the successful completion of its first diving test in early March, and the company was optimistic that the system would complete development in the first or second quarter of 2025. The AUV will conduct further navigation and guidance testing during April before progressing to trials in deeper water in May, the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, the company is planning to start building a second, smaller version this year, which it aims to complete by 2026, according to the spokesperson. Aselsan is planning a family of three Deringöz AUVs in total, although no timeframe has yet been set for the development of the largest version. (Source: Janes)

 

12 Apr 24. IAI/Aerotor unveil APUS 25 long-range endurance quadcopter. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Aerotor Unmanned Systems have joined forces to develop a novel unmanned quadcopter designed for long-range endurance missions.

The new platform, named APUS 25, was showcased for the first time at the Undersea Defence Technology (UDT) 2024 conference and exhibition, which was held in London from 8 to 10 April.

Speaking to Janes at UDT 2024, an IAI spokesperson said the vehicle incorporates new technology developed by Aerotor that promises greater flight endurance, payload carrying capacity, and manoeuvrability than comparable unmanned quadcopters on the market.

Existing multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) typically have electric motors for each rotor that enable them to independently change their revolutions per minute (RPMs) for manoeuvres.

The Apus concept developed by Aerotor, however, introduces a new steering method based on a central heavy fuel internal combustion engine that powers the four blades working at a fixed RPM with a variable pitch rotor system. (Source: Janes)

The British Robotics Seed Fund is the first SEIS-qualifying investment fund specialising in UK-based robotics businesses. The focus of the fund is to deliver superior returns to investors by making targeted investments in a mixed basket of the most innovative and disruptive businesses that are exploiting the new generation of robotics technologies in defence and other sector applications.

Automation and robotisation are beginning to drive significant productivity improvements in the global economy heralding a new industrial revolution. The fund allows investors to benefit from this exciting opportunity, whilst also delivering the extremely attractive tax reliefs offered by the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS). For many private investors, the amount of specialist knowledge required to assess investments in robotics is not practical and hence investing through a fund structure makes good sense.
