25 Feb 25. EDGE Group entity, KATIM and Nokia’s partnership aims to secure communications for mission-critical defence applications. EDGE entity KATIM, a provider of ultra-secure communications and data protection solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nokia. The partnership aims to develop secure telecommunications networks for mission-critical and defence applications in the UAE. 25 Feb 25. Spain’s MoD Selects Skydio X10D Autonomous Drones in EUR18m Initial Tender. Skydio, in partnership with Paukner Group, will supply Skydio X10D drones to the Spanish Armed Forces for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance. Skydio, the leading U.S. drone manufacturer and world leader in autonomous flight, has been awarded a contract by Spain’s Ministry of Defence (MINISDEF) to supply autonomous small uncrewed aerial systems (sUAS) technology to the Spanish Armed Forces. In partnership with Paukner Group, a Spanish defense and security product distributor, Skydio will deliver Skydio X10D drones in a contract worth up to €18 m ($18.7m USD).

25 Feb 25. Airbus to build the communication network for the French air and naval force, stage 3. The French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) has awarded the contract for the IP Network of the Naval Force (RIFAN) stage 3 to an industrial consortium led by Airbus Defence and Space and also comprising Naval Group. With a maximum value of 480m euros and a maximum duration of 10 years, the contract covers the development of RIFAN upgrades, their deployment and operational maintenance.
“Airbus Defence and Space has been involved in the development and deployment of the network and communication systems of French Navy ships for almost 15 years,” said Eric Even, Head of Space Digital at Airbus Defence and Space. “With RIFAN 3, we are preparing for the next stage, that of collaborative naval combat, networked combat of all assets and platforms involved in naval operations.”
The developments will be carried out incrementally between 2026 and 2030 and deployed on ships between 2028 and 2032. More than 80 vessels will be equipped with the RIFAN 3 network: aircraft carriers, amphibious helicopter carriers, frigates, command and supply vessels, patrol vessels, minesweepers, submarines and support vessels. This new RIFAN 3 contract aims, in particular, to increase inter-ship connectivity to progressively meet the needs of collaborative combat, thanks to new high-speed, low-latency transmission means that will be deployed on front-line vessels. The resilience of the network will also be strengthened by the development of rapid reconfiguration mechanisms to adapt to the available means of communication in different tactical and operational scenarios. In the face of growing cyber threats, the network will also rely on enhanced cybersecurity to preserve the integrity and continuity of operations. The RIFAN 2 system was commissioned by the French Navy and Airbus Defence and Space and its partners between 2012 and 2016. It brings together and operates all the communication resources available on board, such as Syracuse IV, Comcept, commercial satellite constellations (LEO, MEO and GEO) and radio resources. It allows the vessels to communicate on an IP network guaranteeing a very high level of security, and to exchange data with classification levels ranging from ‘unprotected’ to ‘secret’.
21 Feb 25. Space Force bumps Astrion from Resilient GPS program. The Space Force has canceled its contract with one of the four companies developing designs for its Resilient GPS program following an initial design review, Defense News has learned. Last September, the service’s acquisition arm, Space Systems Command, awarded L3Harris, Sierra Space, Astranis and Axient — which has since been acquired by Astrion — each $10 m contracts to draft early concepts for a constellation of small, low-cost, resilient GPS satellites. In December and January, after early design reviews with each firm, SSC opted to “discontinue” Astrion’s contract, according to Cordell DeLaPena, program executive officer for military communications and positioning, navigation and timing.
“There was one vendor that wasn’t quite at the level of maturity, so we discontinued that vendor and we’re going to harvest the remaining dollars and invest those in the three remaining vendors,” DeLaPena told Defense News in an interview Thursday.
Astrion declined to comment on the Space Force’s decision.
SSC is still negotiating the terms of the contract cancellation, so it’s not clear how much funding will be redistributed among the remaining vendors, DeLaPena said. With four companies, the service was able to fund the first six months of the effort, known as R-GPS. The hope is that the additional money will be enough to get the remaining three firms through the program’s first phase, he said, which will culminate this spring with a final design review and demonstration. After the demonstration, the service plans to choose at least two companies to finalize their designs and build prototypes over the program’s next phase. It will then pick one or more firms to build the first eight satellites, which it wants ready for launch by 2028. R-GPS is expected to cost $1 bn over the next five years. At around $50 to $80m each, the satellites are projected to cost a fraction of the $250m the service is spending for just one Lockheed Martin-built GPS IIIF satellite. The lower unit cost and smaller size means the individual spacecraft have less capability than the legacy alternative. But when flying together as a constellation of dozens of satellites, they’ll augment those more exquisite spacecraft with a backup capability that, in theory, is harder for enemies to target. R-GPS satellites will have a range of civil signals as well as M-code, a more secure military signal with anti-jam capabilities. The program was funded with a new Pentagon budget authority called quick start, provided in the fiscal 2024 National Defense Authorization Act and championed by former Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall. The authority — created out of a recognition that it can take more than two years for a new program to get funded through the Defense Department’s budget process — allows the DOD to shift a total of $100m annually from the services’ budgets to begin development on new programs. R-GPS received $40m through quick start and requested Congress realign another $77m in fiscal 2025 for the program. Lawmakers pushed back on the request, citing concerns about whether the effort would have a real impact on GPS resiliency and questioning the Space Force’s plans for fielding ground terminals. DeLaPena said SSC has made some progress in those discussions, and he’s hopeful Congress will approve its fiscal 2025 request.

20 Feb 25. Rocket Lab’s Electron beating Musk’s Falcon 9. Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (Nasdaq: RKLB) a global leader in launch services and space systems, today successfully launched its 60th Electron to deploy the next satellite in the Earth-imaging satellite constellation of real-time space-based intelligence company BlackSky. Satnews February 19th saw the New Zealand-based Rocket Lab, founded by Sir Peter Beck, launch its 60th Electron mission. The company specializes in launching smaller satellites, and its record to date is extraordinarily impressive. Electron is already the world’s most frequently launched small rocket annually. “Now we’re making it the world’s first reusable orbital small rocket too,” said Rocket Lab. Electron is now the fastest commercially developed rocket to reach 60 successful missions, surpassing SpaceX’s Falcon 9.
“By reusing Electron’s first stage, the largest part of the launch vehicle, we aim to increase our already industry-leading launch cadence and further drive down launch costs,” said the company. However, Rocket Lab also has ‘Neutron’ under development which will be capable of returning the first stage to its launch site and handle up to 13 tonnes of cargo.
This 60th mission did not attempt to recover the rocket’s powerful first stage, but the plan is to equip Electron’s first stage with parachutes to slow its descent from space back to Earth, where it splashes down in the ocean for collection by marine vessels and transport back to its production complex for refurbishment, ready for the next flight. Founded in 2006, the company has enjoyed considerable success from its New Zealand base (near Auckland on the Māhia Peninsula) but it also has a launch site at Wallops Island, Virginia. It has enjoyed orders from NASA including one mission to bring samples back from the surface of Mars. Its bouquet of statistics show that it has launched 210 satellites, although some of its satellite-based components including its Reaction Wheels, are present on more than 1,700 satellites. SpaceX is targeting Friday, February 21 for a Falcon 9 launch of 23 Starlink satellites, including 13 with Direct to Cell capabilities, to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Liftoff is targeted for 10:19 a.m. ET, with backup opportunities available until 10:25 a.m. ET. 14 Feb 25. BlackSky and Rocket Lab establish launch window for first Gen-3 satellite. BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) and Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (Nasdaq: RKLB) have established a launch window opening February 18 for the first Gen-3 satellite. The launch, named “Fasten Your Space Belts,” will add very high-resolution 35-centimeter imaging capability to BlackSky’s high-cadence, low-latency data and AI-enabled analytics offerings.
“This launch represents a major inflection point for our global defense and intelligence customer base as BlackSky introduces very high-resolution Gen-3 capabilities to our high-frequency, low-latency monitoring constellation,” said Brian O’Toole, BlackSky CEO. “As more Gen-3 satellites complete production, we expect a regular cadence of additional launches over the coming year.”
