10 Nov 16. Exponent Showcases Live Drone Tracking Technology.
Exponent Technology Services has unveiled its SkyCommander at the UTM Convention 2016. Completely encapsulated and independent of any requirement to be electronically coupled with the UAV, Exponent’s SkyCommander provides near real-time situational awareness of UAV operations via a secured cloud based internet platform and existing cellular networks.
Coupled with Exponent’s UAS Portal, users can now configure flights, manage UAS, and monitor flight times, whilst also tracking live flights via the SkyCommander. UAS managers can set up instantaneous SMS alerts that warn operators and regulators when operational parameters are being breached, including perimeter, altitude, weather, checklists, pilot proficiency and currency.
Currently, UAV operators face considerable challenges in complying with regulatory ordinances and standards regarding UAV operations. The current lack of technology to track independent UAV flight data, and the ability to link this to specific regulator issued approvals, makes compliance a highly non-transparent area.
Thomas Tilson, Commercial Manager said: ”aviation authorities are ultimately responsible for ensuring safety and standards, which means they not only need to formulate appropriate rules governing UAV use, but also a means to monitor and validate compliance. As with any new technology, regulators are struggling to adapt and there has been a “wait and see” approach to UAV regulation to date, however, this needs to change.”
Exponent offers different holistic UAS solutions such as inventory tracking across large open yards, water sample retrievals, security surveillance, surveying, agriculture and 3D mapping, tailored according to its clients’ needs.
SkyCommander key features:
• Compact and lightweight
• UAV independent
• Flight data recorder functionality
• Near real-time tracking
• Three hours of battery life
• Altitude, perimeter and proximity alerts
• Customizable reports
SkyCommander technology:
• Compact and lightweight – measuring 8 cm in length, 7 cm in width and 2 cm in height, the SkyCommander weighs only 130 grams.
• Compatibility – the SkyCommander is easily installed on any UAV in matter of seconds.
• Self-powered – built-in rechargeable battery permits up to a maximum of 100 operational cycles independent of the UAV’s power, with three hours of continuous operation on a single charge.
• Encrypted Data Logging – stored flight data is secured via encryption allowing post-flight data downloads in case of loss of network connectivity.

08 Nov 16. Echodyne Announces the First Successful Airborne Detect and Avoid Radar Test on a Small Drone. Echodyne Corp today announced the first-ever successful test of airborne Detect and Avoid (DAA) radar on a small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (sUAV). Echodyne’s radar was mounted on a small commercial drone which flew multiple missions below 400’ over a period of several days. The drone was of a size, payload, and range well suited for package delivery, infrastructure inspection, and agricultural monitoring.
Echodyne’s detect and avoid technology enables a drone to “see” moving and stationary obstacles using “radar vision” as the drone flies through the airspace beyond line of sight of its operator. The radar tests were conducted with an undisclosed partner using Echodyne’s developer kit radar with its patented Metamaterial Electronically Scanning Array (MESA). Echodyne’s radar is based on metamaterials technology which enables the radar to deliver high-performance electronic scanning
