Echodyne, the radar platform company, today announces a collaboration with Poland’s Military Institute of Armored and Automotive Technology (WITPiS), a leading research and development center in the field of land vehicle technology. Through this collaboration, the teams will work to assess, integrate, and find potential uses for Echodyne’s counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) radars in Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) developed by WITPiS and its industrial partners.

Echodyne will be working closely with its long-time partner and distributor in Poland, Linc Polska, to test, demonstrate, and present the capabilities of C-UAS radar technology with WITPiS’ UGVs. The three entities will work hand-in-hand to identify both civil and military applications for the radar-enabled UGVs in the region.

Allen Control Systems (ACS), a leader in autonomous precision robotics, today announced the release of Treillis, its next-generation Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test platform purpose-built for real-world tracker and fire-control system evaluation. Originally developed to support ACS’s Bullfrog™ autonomous weapon system, Treillis is now available for government and industry partners seeking to accelerate sensor fusion, AI/ML tracking, and closed-loop weapon system development. The HIL system opens ACS’s precision turret and tracking compute platform via the Treillis SDK as a test vehicle for new and legacy counter-drone tracking systems. NATO abandons E-7 acquisition as ‘strategic and financial basis has disappeared.’ NATO has abandoned its plan to acquire the Boeing E-7 Wedgetail to replace its Boeing E-3A Sentry Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) aircraft, citing the loss of the ‘strategic and financial basis’ that underpinned the selection. As one of seven national partners participating in the AWACS replacement effort, the Netherlands announced the move on 13 November, two years after the E-7A was chosen in November 2023 to replace the E-3As under the Initial Alliance Future Surveillance and Control (IAFSC) requirement.

“The Netherlands, together with a number of partner countries, is abandoning the acquisition of six Boeing E-7 Wedgetails,” the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) said. “Under the previous [E-7] acquisition programme, both the strategic and financial basis has disappeared. Therefore, the remaining countries, united in the Support Partnership Committee, [have] ceased the acquisition of the E-7. The members are now exploring alternatives for replacing the fleet, and are looking for new partners.”

In its announcement, the Dutch MoD cited the decision by the US Air Force (USAF) in July to leave the acquisition, following its decision the previous month to cancel its own planned procurement of 26 E-7 aircraft over survivability and cost concerns.

“The commitment remains to have other [replacement] aircraft operational by [the time of the E-3A retirement in] 2035,” Dutch State Secretary of Defence Gijs Tuinman said, adding, “The withdrawal of the US also shows the importance of investing as much as possible in European industry.” (Source: Janes)

 

13 Nov 25. US Army certifies rapid anti-drone response team. Following successful field exercises simulating defense against drone incursions, the U.S. Army’s Northern Command has formed an operational team to rapidly counter drone threats to military bases within the United States.

“The validation and certification of our Counter-small UAS fly-away kit is an important step in being able to support installation commanders within the United States as they defend against drone incursions,” Gen. Gregory Guillot, North American Aerospace Defense Command and USNORTHCOM commander, said in a release.

“Moving beyond an advisory role, we now have a team with equipment that is able to rapidly deploy and provide active and passive detection capabilities and low-collateral non-kinetic and low-kinetic defeat options in one package.”

The Army certified the unit of 11 soldiers as an operational team following high-pressure field tests in Florida and North Dakota, which saw soldiers with various specialized backgrounds from USNORTHCOM and 21st Space Base Delta at Peterson Space Force Base practice defending domestic military sites using NORTHCOM’s Counter-small UAS fly-away kit. The kit, produced by Anduril, forms an all-round web of sensors and effectors to detect, target and disable intrusive small drones. With overlapping layers of technology, the system forms a shield to detect and track drones from all directions. The kit uses Anduril’s Wisp, an AI-infrared system with 360-degree motion sensor, plus Pulsar, an AI-enhanced electromagnetic warfare platform that can detect and deny electronic threats. Added to this is the Heimdal mobile sensor trailer that uses thermal optics and radar to seek incoming targets. The systems work together in synchrony. The kinetic strike element of the kit is Anvil — a flying, self-guided interceptor that hunts down intrusive drones and rams into them, hurling them out of the sky. A flexible air weapon, Anvil includes a munition variant armed with high explosives. The counter-drone fly-away kit team first tested its abilities in September during exercise Falcon Peak 25.2, which saw soldiers of the 10th Special Forces Group play the role of adversaries launching drone threats for military and interagency partners to respond to. Tasked with practicing the defense of the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, the fly-away kit team succeeded in stopping over 100 unmanned aerial targets over a span of several days. Most of the operators had no previous experience with drones, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Joey Frey, C-sUAS response program manager for NORTHCOM, said in a release.

“This team of 11 far exceeded expectations of operators whose first time seeing the system was 30 days ago,” Frey said. “Their ability to adapt to an unfamiliar mission set and learn the tactics of air defenders was a breath of fresh air.” (Source: Defense News)

 

13 Nov 25. Demand for Critical Night Vision Capability Sparks Expansion of Elbit America Facility, Workforce.

Highly skilled labor force and pro-industry climate make Virginia a great place to do business.

Demand for low-light image intensification and situational awareness is gaining. United States and allied militaries rely on complex night vision systems to dominate the battlefield even in the darkest conditions. Elbit America’s Warfighter Systems Division is in Roanoke County, Virginia. The company plans to invest roughly $30 m dollars in into the facility with enhancements, expansion efforts, machinery, and tools. These investments are expected to drive growth, with more than 250 new jobs anticipated and a goal of expanding the site’s workforce to more than 1,000 strong.

Chess Dynamics, part of the Cohort plc Group, has confirmed that its latest high-performance positioner, OMEGA, is now in operational use as part of the Blue Jay Horizon system which was launched at the Indo Pacific International Maritime Exposition in Sydney. Developed by Australian defence specialist Mellori, the system enables crews to train, test and build confidence in their sensors under real-world maritime conditions. It reflects the strength of international collaboration and the growing demand for adaptable, sovereign EW capability. OMEGA forms a critical part of the system, providing precise, stabilised high-torque movement for long-range RF payloads. With a payload capacity of up to 500kg, it delivers the mechanical stability and positioning accuracy required for use at sea, maintaining performance under wind loading, vibration, and platform motion such as roll and pitch. Elbit Systems UK (ESUK), a Bristol based defence technology company, has delivered the first Ground Based Surveillance Radar (GBSR) systems to the Royal Artillery following successful live fire trials earlier this year. The delivery of these 55 units, and associated support solutions, means that ESUK has achieved the first tranche of equipment deliveries. GBSR is a portable radar system that operates in two primary roles: Surveillance and Fall of Shot (FoS) correction. When used for Surveillance, the system can track and classify personnel, vehicles, helicopters and drones – providing troops with an accurate picture of allied movement and an early warning on incoming threats. For FoS correction, GBSR provides mortar and artillery teams with rapid fires adjustments by detecting and locating rounds with a high level of accuracy – increasing the effectiveness and lethality of fires teams.  The system, which is manufactured exclusively in the UK and Europe, was specifically developed to meet the requirements of the British Armed Forces and enables the demand for market leading sense and decide technology. This innovative approach, combined with ESUK’s open architecture, led to the development of a high-tech solution that will enhance survivability of front-line troops and provide operational advantage now and into the future. Following the initial deliveries, ESUK will be working with the British Army to deliver the remaining systems later this year. Poland will begin building its own national anti-drone defense system within months, opting not to wait for the European Union’s broader “drone wall” project, Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk said in an interview with Bloomberg.

“We agree with the idea of strengthening airspace defense over the entire territory of the European Union and are ready to consider external proposals or solutions. But we give priority to national projects,” Tomczyk said.

He added that while Poland supports the EU’s joint defense efforts, its own system will come first, with the European “drone wall” expected to “supplement” the Polish network in the future. “If there are any external tools, we will use them to the fullest,” he noted.

The Defense Ministry plans to announce investments later this month in technologies designed to detect, jam, and neutralize hostile drones as part of a broader air defense modernization program. While Tomczyk did not disclose the total cost, he said Polish companies are expected to receive at least half of the contracts. According to the deputy minister, the first elements of the new system could become operational within three months of the announcement, with full completion targeted within two years. Unlike traditional jamming methods, Merops can deploy small interceptor drones that physically disable or divert hostile UAVs. These interceptors operate autonomously even under GPS denial or electronic attack. The system is designed for rapid transport and deployment, although its performance depends on sensor quality, weather conditions and the complexity of incoming attacks.

“It’s able to target the drones and take them down and at a low cost as well,” said Colonel Mark McLellan of NATO Allied Land Command. He continued, “It’s a lot cheaper than flying an F-35 into the air to take them down with a missile.”

Rising Concerns Over Airspace Violations

Recent incidents have raised security concerns across NATO’s eastern flank:

  • Poland: Around 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace in early September during strikes on Ukraine. Allied jets responded, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk inspected wreckage from downed UAVs. Warsaw has since committed hundreds of ms of US dollars to new air defence systems.

According to NATO spokesman Colonel Martin O’Donnell, the alliance plans to expand “multi-domain vigilance operations” in the Baltic Sea region, working closely with Denmark, Germany and Sweden.

Background on the NCUTC

The FBI’s National Counter-UAS Training Center was established following Executive Order 14305, “Restoring American Airspace Sovereignty,” signed by President Trump on June 6, 2025. It also established a Federal Task Force to strengthen America’s airspace security. From Oct 21-27, an 11-person team from U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) deployed to Minot Air Force Base to provide C-UAS support to the 5th Bomb Wing. Britain is providing military support to Belgium following a series of suspected Russian drone incursions into Belgian airspace, according to Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, the Chief of the Defence Staff. Knighton told the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that his Belgian counterpart requested assistance earlier this week and that British equipment and personnel are now en route. Brussels Airport was forced to close temporarily on Thursday night after drones were spotted nearby. Additional sightings occurred at other locations, including a military base. 10 Nov 25. Thales Delivers a New Naval Drone Equipped With the Latest Generation Sonar to the French Navy. As part of the Franco-British Maritime Mine Counter Measures MMCM programme, Thales has announced the delivery to the French Navy of a surface naval drone equipped with a TSAM towed sonar and on board the SAMDIS multi-view sonar. This new step marks the company’s commitment and industrial dynamic in this strategic programme, managed by OCCAR with the support of the French (Direction générale de l’armement (DGA) and the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD).  This delivery follows the first production system delivered in December 2024, consisting of the surface drone (USV) equipped with the towed sonar TSAM, data analysis software using Artificial Intelligence (AI), MiMap and the M-Cube mission management system. This unmanned system was designed to improve the operational performance of navies that are leaders in mine countermeasures, by minimising personnel exposure to hazardous environments. 04 Nov 25.  DHS seeks input on C-UAS programme and announces industry day. The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of the Chief Procurement Officer, Office of Procurement Operations in partnership with the Science & Technology Directorate has published a draft solicitation for the agency’s counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) programme.   The draft solicitation is intended to provide industry with further information on the in-development, draft DHS acquisition strategy and to elicit suggestions and/or questions to improve the final C-UAS request for proposal.

“Under the C-UAS programme, offerors will provide a variety of commercially available IT commodity products and services as well as a variety of commercially available software solutions, all of which directly support DHS programmes in accomplishing their missions,” DHS states. “A primary goal of this acquisition is to generate cost avoidance and savings by leveraging the buying power of DHS and its components, ultimately resulting in the best value for the government.”

DHS is currently exploring different potential solicitation, evaluation, and award strategies associated with C-UAS requirements. It is anticipated that the outcome of such exploration will result in the release of a single C-UAS solicitation for Information Technology Value-Added Resellers under Track 1 Hardware/Software and Ancillary Services and system integrators under Track 2 Comprehensive Services where evaluations are conducted and awards made separately for each track. DHS established draft definitions for Track 1 that will apply to C-UAS. At this time DHS seeks input regarding the draft definition content. This notice is intended to be the first of several avenues of industry engagement regarding the C-UAS requirement, including a Virtual Industry Day on November 6 to provide industry with additional information to obtain direct industry feedback.

05 Nov 25. Wrap Technologies demonstrates new air-to-air C-UAS entanglement capability. Wrap Technologies today announced the first known air-to-air interdiction using the company’s patented BolaWrap® entanglement system. The test was conducted in partnership with Vector on the Vector Hammer drone platform. Wrap’s patent-pending MERLIN-Interdictor payload and patented non-lethal BolaWrap 150 Kevlar tether and anchor cassette successfully neutralized a moving aerial target mid-flight, achieving interdiction in live conditions.

06 Nov 25. IAA concludes investigation into unauthorised drone operations near Dublin Airport. The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has concluded an investigation into a series of unauthorised drone operations conducted by Wills Bros Ltd. during construction activities at a site in Finglas, located south of Dublin Airport.  IAA said infringements took place in GeoZone U27 (EIDW 27), the Dublin Control Zone. The area of operation was under 2km from the airport perimeter. The investigation found that Wills Bros Ltd. operated drone flights within the Dublin Airport control zone without the required Operational Authorisation and without a UAS (drone) Operator Registration.

“The flights were detected by the Dublin Airport Dedrone detection system. Following detection, the IAA initiated an investigation to determine the extent of the operations, the pilots involved, and the underlying causes of the non-compliance,” IAA said. “In line with the IAA’s safety and enforcement policy, the IAA engaged directly with Wills Bros to achieve early compliance rather than pursue legal avenues. The investigation identified three pilots working for the drone operator who, following instruction from the IAA, have since completed the appropriate training. Additionally, Wills Bros Ltd. has implemented internal procedures to ensure all future UAS operations are conducted under proper authorisation and oversight.”

07 Nov 25. SNORTHCOM’s C-sUAS fly-away kit attains operational certification. A team from US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) deployed at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota between 21 and 27 October to provide counter-small uncrewed aerial system (C-sUAS) support to the 5th Bomb Wing and installation commander, successfully engaging more than 100 targets of interest across several days and attaining certification as an operational team. The exercise also served as a validation and certification event for USNORTHCOM’s C-sUAS fly-away kit from Anduril. It was the first time the newly-formed team deployed with the kit that is designed specifically to detect, track, identify and mitigate drone incursions at military installations within the United States.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Joey Frey, the command’s C-sUAS response programme manager and an Army air defender said the goal was to evaluate the entire movement to the North Dakota base from the call to action to ensuring the equipment was loaded on a military aircraft and transported, completing successful counter-drone engagements, and redeployment back to Colorado Springs, where USNORTHCOM is located. “This team of 11 far exceeded expectations of operators whose first time seeing the system was 30 days ago,” he said, referring to the command’s C-sUAS experiment Falcon Peak 25.2 at Eglin AFB, Florida in September, where the team learned how to set up the system, mitigate drone threats and tear down the system during their time in the Sunshine State.

The fly-away kit is an amalgamation of sensors and effectors including the Heimdal mobile sensor trailer that includes a continuous 360-degree pan and tilt unit, thermal optics and a radar, all working together autonomously for target acquisition ; Anvil drone interceptors and launch box, which operate autonomously to detect, track, shadow and mitigate threats; an electromagnetic warfare effector called Pulsar that features radio frequency detect, track, classify and deny options; and The Wisp, a wide-area infrared system that is AI-enabled and offers 360-degree, full-motion sensoring to provide an accurate sight picture for operators. At Minot AFB, the USNORTHCOM C-sUAS team had to contend with cold, windy and wet conditions during the exercise. Leading the C-sUAS team on the ground was Maj. Austin Fairbairn, an Air Force missileer working in USNORTHCOM’s Theater Security Cooperation office. He said the learning curve has been steep as the majority of the team does not have a C-sUAS background. The team has learned and gained new skills in operating the system’s command-and-control software interface called Lattice, powering up and calibrating systems and creating best practices for C-sUAS tactics. Fairbairn said giving operational support to the 5th Bomb Wing during their exercise “provided a solid foundation of skills” for the team when it comes to “real-world drone engagements.” The USNORTHCOM team’s efforts at Minot AFB went beyond the drone mitigations mission. They also worked through the complexities of federal statutes and interagency partners to ensure the installation commander was operating under appropriate authorities to protect the base from drone incursions. Minot completed a drone defence plan in 2019 and updated it a few years ago. USNORTHCOM’s role in this latest exercise was to help base complete another set of revisions that would allow a wider C-UAS defense plan that includes the fly-away kit, if needed. 07 Nov 25. NATO deploys AI-enabled C-UAS system to counter Russian drones over Europe. NATO is deploying Merops, a counter drone system that can fit in the back of a mid-sized pick-up truck, after a spate of drone incursions reported by member countries. Merops identifies and shoots down rogue drones, It uses artificial intelligence to navigate when satellite and electronic communications are jammed. NATO officials told The Associated Press that the system is being deployed in Poland and Romania, and will also be used by Denmark. “What this system does is give us very accurate detection,” said Col. DroneShield is seeing continued rapid increase in customer order flow, substantially from repeat customers looking to step up the amount of counter-drone systems from a low or no existing base, with the receipt of a package of 3 standalone contracts totalling $7.6m for handheld systems for delivery to the U.S. Government. DroneShield expects to deliver all equipment in Q4 2025, with cash payments expected in Q4 2025 or Q1 2026. No additional material conditions need to be satisfied. There is no obligation for any additional contracts from this customer. DroneShield has previously received orders from this customer, including $5.7m in May 2024 and $7.9 m in September 2025. These repeat orders strengthen DroneShield’s position as a trusted provider of mission-critical solutions to address the growing challenge of drone threats on the modern battlefield and the civilian sector.

07 Nov 25. Polish-UK anti-drone systems prove effective in the Middle East. The ‘Sky Shield’ live-fire exercise – Air Defence Weapons Shooting Exercise as part of the Arab Army Programme – in Jordan confirmed the effectiveness of the anti-drone solution from MSI-Defence Systems Ltd and Advanced Protection Systems (APS). The exercises tested, among others, the APS SKYctrl SKID system and the MSI-DS TERRAHAWK VSHORAD trailerised mobile air defence system, bringing together cutting-edge air defence technologies.

“The implementation of modern and advanced systems has led to a comprehensive modernisation of air defence at the field level, in line with regional and international requirements. Neutralisation can be carried out in a kinetic or non-kinetic way. The anti-drone solution is already actively deployed in service with leading armed forces in Europe and around the world, including Ukraine, and have also been ordered by a country from the GCC region, among others.  The combination of British and Polish experience and technological potential provides a response to the current dynamically changing battlefield conditions and new forms of drone threats. 07 Nov 25. US Army Tests Bullfrog Counter-Drone Turret on Abrams Tank and Bradley IFV for Combat Defense. The US Army is testing Allen Control Systems’ Bullfrog counter-drone weapon station on Abrams tanks and Bradley IFVs. The move reflects an urgent push to give frontline armor its own defence against the fast-evolving drone threat seen in Ukraine and the Middle East. On 30 October 2025, Allen Control Systems announced on X that the US Army had begun evaluating the integration of its Bullfrog autonomous counter-drone weapon station on Abrams main battle tanks and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, signaling a concrete step to shield frontline armour from the growing threat of small, fast and low-cost unmanned aircraft. The disclosure comes as mechanized forces draw lessons from Ukraine and the Middle East, where drones are routinely used like airborne IEDs against even heavily protected vehicles. It is relevant because the Army is not studying a distant concept but testing a system already mounted, even if in non-firing dummy form, on operational platforms. By making the trial public, Allen Control Systems indicated that the service wants a vehicle-level, not just brigade-level, response to drones. The Army’s initial trials concentrate on integrating the system onto existing U.S. ground vehicles. Photographs released by the company show Bullfrog modules mounted on the rear roofline of a Bradley and on the upper surface of an Abrams turret, with the optronics offset to the side and the weapon cradle elevated. Even as mock-ups, these installations indicate the turret can be fitted without a heavy redesign, can clear current sights and hatches, and can be positioned to provide the crew a full arc of coverage with very steep elevation. That elevation capability is decisive because most legacy remote weapon stations on U.S. vehicles were intended to fight dismounted infantry and light vehicles, not quadcopters that descend almost vertically onto an engine deck. The Army is therefore assessing whether Bullfrog can be fielded as an add-on kit that line units could install and sustain with limited disruption. Beyond simple fit, the trial seeks to quantify performance gains over standard machine-gun stations. Bullfrog centers on a 12.7 mm (.50 cal) weapon with an effective cyclic rate of roughly 600 rounds per minute, integrated with sensors and software designed to detect, classify and engage Group 1 to Group 3 UAVs out to approximately 1,500 m. That capability would give an Abrams or a Bradley a local hard-kill anti-drone envelope that can operate in autonomous or semi-autonomous modes and thereby reduce crew exposure in the hatch. Against drones used as loitering munitions, reaction time is critical: an automated, stabilized turret that is already tracking overhead targets will respond faster than a manually slewed CROWS. The approach also aligns with the U.S. Army’s current counter-UAS concept of dispersing small, mobile effects across platforms rather than concentrating protection in a handful of M-SHORAD vehicles. How Bullfrog would sit alongside existing defensive suites and the likely cost of fielding it are also under scrutiny. Abrams equipped with Trophy and Bradleys trialed with Iron Fist enjoy robust protection against ATGMs and RPGs, but those active protection systems were not primarily engineered to pursue slow, erratic, low-signature quadcopters. Conventional CROWS mounts or locally fixed M2/M240s can engage such threats but remain fully dependent on the gunner’s situational awareness. Bullfrog seeks to close that capability gap by offering greater elevation, automated detection and a relatively light 165-lb architecture that could be adapted to allied platforms. Allen Control Systems did not announce a production-scale U.S. Army contract in its 30 October 2025 communication, indicating the effort remains in evaluation or rapid prototyping rather than a program of record. The announcement signals that the U.S. Army now treats small drones as a persistent, platform-level threat to armored formations and is prepared to work with agile new suppliers to restore tactical control. If Bullfrog or a derivative passes live-fire trials, Abrams and Bradleys could gain an organic, always-available anti-drone layer that complements rather than replaces active protection systems and higher-echelon air-defense assets. India has awarded contracts worth 2.89bn rupees (about $32.5m) to Hyderabad-based Zen Technologies to upgrade its counter-drone systems. The upgrades are expected to be completed within a year and are based on operational lessons drawn from recent frontline engagements, including Operation Sindoor. The upgrade effort focuses on improving both the hardware and software resilience of India’s existing anti-drone systems. According to Zen Technologies, the aim is to strengthen defenses against two growing threat areas: physical compromise of system components and software-level attacks, such as malware infiltration. India’s defense establishment has increasingly highlighted cyber vulnerabilities in air defense networks, citing incidents such as Stuxnet and the 2024 pager attacks in Lebanon, which demonstrated the strategic risks of supply chain and software compromise.

The UK Ministry of Justice has launched a new industry challenge to develop technologies aimed at countering drones used to smuggle contraband into prisons. The Counter-Drone Challenge, announced on November 4, will provide up to £60,000 in funding for selected companies to develop proof-of-concept solutions over a 12-week period. The initiative is being run through His Majesty’s Government Communications Centre Co-Creation, which facilitates collaboration between government and private-sector technology developers. The challenge comes amid a sharp rise in drone activity linked to organised crime groups. According to the Ministry of Justice, the number of drone-related incidents in prisons increased by more than 770 percent between 2019 and 2023, with drones frequently used to deliver drugs, mobile phones and other illicit materials to inmates. The government has already allocated £40 m in 2025 to strengthen prison security, including £10 m for anti-drone measures such as reinforced windows and external netting. However, officials say new approaches are needed to keep pace with evolving tactics and modified drones designed to avoid current detection systems.

Lord Timpson, Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending, said the challenge is intended to spur innovation across the private sector: “We have taken decisive action to combat the scourge of drones in prisons – investing heavily in physical security and cutting-edge technology,” he said. “This challenge will help us harness innovation to keep staff safe, disrupt criminal networks and support prisoner rehabilitation.”

Proposals submitted to the challenge must be legally compliant and simple for staff to operate. The Ministry of Justice said the competition forms part of a broader effort to work more closely with industry on prison security technology. It follows a showcase held in July in which companies demonstrated solutions aimed at improving safety and monitoring inside prisons. Winning proposals will be selected early next year, with the aim of transitioning successful technologies into operational use if trials prove effective.

Japan has conducted live-fire exercises to shoot down drones for the first time as concerns grow over unmanned aerial threats and regional security pressures. The drills are part of Rising Thunder, a joint training exercise with the U.S. Army held at the Yakima Training Center in Washington state. The exercise, which began on October 27 and runs through November 12, involves roughly 440 personnel from Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force and about 500 U.S. Army troops. Japanese soldiers practiced intercepting airborne target drones using portable air-defense and counter-UAS equipment provided by U.S. forces. The drills are being viewed as a significant development in Japan’s approach to unmanned threats, particularly as drones have become central to modern conflict, most visibly in Ukraine, where both sides rely on uncrewed aircraft for surveillance and attack missions. Defense analysts in Japan have warned that swarms of inexpensive drones could overwhelm traditional air-defense systems. The training comes shortly after Sanae Takaichi took office as Japan’s new prime minister. Takaichi has long advocated for stronger defense measures in response to Chinese military pressure around Taiwan and in the East China Sea. Her administration is expected to continue strengthening defense coordination with the United States. Japan does not have large-scale training areas suitable for live drone shootdowns, making U.S.-based exercises a key component of its growing counter-UAS training. The drills are also seen as a signal of continued operational cooperation between Japanese and U.S. forces.
