05 Nov 25. Cuashub.com said today that US Army advances plans for new laser weapon to counter small drones. The U.S. Army is moving forward with plans to field a new high-energy laser system designed to destroy small drones, a key step toward the Army’s goal of making directed-energy weapons an operational capability. In a Request for Information (RFI) published on October 30, the Army outlined details for the Enduring High Energy Laser (E-HEL) initiative, seeking input from industry ahead of a potential competitive source selection expected as early as the second quarter of fiscal year 2026. The service also plans to host a technology demonstration at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, in December and January, giving potential vendors an opportunity to showcase their systems in live range testing. The E-HEL effort is being led by the Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO), which has previously developed and tested laser systems under the Directed Energy Maneuver-Short Range Air Defense (DE M-SHORAD) program. However, E-HEL is expected to become the Army’s first official program of record for directed-energy weapons, a milestone that would move the technology from experimental use toward sustained production and fielding.

What is the Army looking for?

According to the RFI, the Army aims to acquire up to 20 E-HEL platforms, using a modular open systems architecture and leveraging “range-proven” laser and beam control technologies. The system is being designed to provide a hard-kill capability against Group 1 and 2 drones, as well as one-way attack Group 3 UAS, by physically disabling or destroying the aircraft mid-flight. The system will be capable of operating in both semi-fixed and mobile configurations, either mounted on the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle or deployed in a palletized form for greater flexibility. It will also integrate with external sensors and command networks, including the Forward Area Air Defense (FAAD) system, allowing operators to track drones under both clear and cluttered battlefield conditions.

Defense officials see laser weapons as a potentially cost-effective counter-drone solution, offering faster engagement times, deeper magazines and a far lower cost per shot than traditional kinetic interceptors. A Congressional Research Service report noted that such advantages could provide “a favorable cost-exchange ratio for defenders,” reducing the expense of shooting down low-cost drones.

However, the report also warned of ongoing technical challenges, including beam control, thermal management and the impact of weather, such as rain or fog, on system performance. These issues continue to shape the Army’s development strategy as it pushes toward operational readiness. The E-HEL program reflects the Pentagon’s growing emphasis on directed energy to counter the rapid proliferation of small drones and loitering munitions on the battlefield. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed the Army to lead a joint interagency task force focused on defeating these threats, which have become increasingly prevalent in modern conflicts. 05 Nov 25. Cuashub.com said today that Russia deploys ‘steel hedgehog’ tanks against Ukrainian FPVs. Amid an extensive campaign of Ukrainian FPV strikes, Russian forces have begun fielding modified T-72 and T-80 tanks equipped with elaborate anti-drone structures made from thick metal cables, according to the Telegram channel Vodohrai, which published images of the vehicles on November 2. The photos show T-80BVM and T-72B3 models fitted with mine plows, the TMT-K and KMT-7, and covered by dense frameworks resembling cages or “grills.” These are wrapped in multiple layers of steel cables extending across the upper, rear and partially frontal sections of the tanks, even enclosing parts of their suspension systems. In one image, a T-80BVM appears to carry an electronic warfare (EW) system mounted above the cable armor, suggesting an effort to combine physical and electronic protection against FPV drones widely used by Ukrainian forces. The makeshift structures, which Russian troops reportedly refer to as “hedgehogs,” are designed to tangle or damage drone propellers and frames, reducing the likelihood that an FPV drone’s explosive payload will detonate on impact. The concept marks an evolution from earlier “grill” or “shed” armor designs seen throughout the conflict, which often provided limited protection against direct strikes from above. However, the new cable armor adds significant weight and bulk, raising questions about the tanks’ mobility and maintainability in the field. Analysts have previously noted that similar modifications can strain engines and suspension systems, particularly when used on older vehicles. The “steel hedgehog” tanks are part of a broader pattern of improvised battlefield adaptations as Russian forces attempt to counter Ukraine’s growing arsenal of low-cost, precision FPV drones. In recent months, Russian troops have also been filmed welding sharp metal spikes to UAZ-452 vans in a similar effort to deflect or prematurely detonate incoming drones.

Belgian authorities have launched an investigation after multiple drones were spotted flying over military bases during the weekend in what Defense Minister Theo Francken described as apparent attempts to gather intelligence on fighter jets and ammunition depots.

“They come to spy, to see where the F-16s are, where the ammunition are, and other highly strategic information,” Francken told Belgian broadcaster RTBF on Sunday.

The incidents reportedly took place above the Kleine Brogel Air Base in northern Belgium, a key defense site that hosts U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets and serves as a location for Belgium’s future F-35 fleet. The base also includes a U.S. military presence and is believed to play a role in NATO’s nuclear-sharing arrangements.

Francken stopped short of directly blaming Russia for the incursions but suggested the pattern of drone activity across Europe points to a coordinated effort:

“The Russians are trying to do this in all European countries,” he said. “Is it the Russians now? I can’t say that, but the motives are clear and the ways of doing things like this are also very clear.”

The weekend incident follows a recent surge in unidentified drone activity across Europe. In recent weeks, Russian drones were intercepted over Poland, while others were tracked above Romania, and drone sightings temporarily disrupted air traffic in Denmark, Norway and Germany. Francken described the latest events as further proof that “war is truly a drone war,” emphasizing the need to strengthen Belgium’s airspace defenses. The defense minister is expected to present a €50 m national counter-drone plan next week, aimed at deploying detection systems, jammers and handheld drone guns to protect critical sites across the country. On October 28, FEMA announced the Fiscal Year 2026 Notices of Funding Opportunity for two major programs: the FIFA World Cup Grant Program and the Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) Grant Program. Together, they provide more than $1bn in federal funding to secure the World Cup and strengthen airspace protection. The FIFA World Cup Grant Program allocates $625 m to 11 U.S. cities hosting matches in 2026. Funds will cover security measures such as training, exercises, staff background checks, cybersecurity defense, and increased police and emergency response for stadiums, hotels, and transport hubs.

A National Security Priority

As part of the announcement, a FEMA spokesperson said: “Nothing is more important to President Trump than protecting the American people. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to be the largest sporting event in history, so it must also be the safest. That’s why DHS is already working with host cities to ensure players, staff and attendees are safe from all threats, including terrorist activities and criminal use of drones. By providing federal funding to state and local communities through carefully crafted grant programs, we are ensuring that taxpayer money is spent responsibly on projects that deliver real safety and security for all Americans.”

C-UAS Grant Program

The FEMA C-UAS Grant Program will provide $500m over two fiscal years to counter unlawful drone use. In FY 2026, $250m will go to nine states and the National Capital Region hosting World Cup and America 250 events. The remaining $250 m will be distributed in FY 2027 to all 56 states and territories to expand national detection and response capacity. Both programs were created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, 2025 and signed into law by President Trump in July.

04 Nov 25. Tech challenge launched to counter drone threats in prisons. A new innovation challenge aimed at combatting the growing threat of drones to prisons has been launched by the Ministry of Justice through His Majesty’s Government Communications Centre Co-Creation.

A new innovation challenge aimed at combatting the growing threat of drones to prisons has been launched by the Ministry of Justice through His Majesty’s Government Communications Centre (HMGCC) Co-Creation. The Counter-Drone Challenge invites industry to find cutting-edge solutions to detect drones designed by criminals to evade current detection methods available on the market. Successful applicants will receive £60,000 funding to develop proof-of-concept systems over a 12-week period.  It comes as the number of incidents at prisons involving drones skyrocketed by over 770% between 2019 and 2023, with the devices increasingly being used by organised crime groups to smuggle contraband like drugs and phones into jails.  The Government is already investing £40 m this year to bolster prison security, including £10 m on anti-drone measures such as exterior netting and reinforced windows.

Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending, Lord Timpson, said: “We have taken decisive action to combat the scourge of drones in prisons – investing heavily in physical security and cutting-edge technology.  This challenge will help us harness innovation to keep staff safe, disrupt criminal networks and support prisoner rehabilitation.”

Solutions put forward for the challenge must be simple to use and legally compliant.  This challenge is part of the Ministry of Justice’s wider ambition to engage with industry to source innovative security solutions. It follows a July showcase where businesses presented cutting-edge technologies to ministers, aimed at tackling prison violence, improving monitoring, and strengthening frontline safety.”

03 Nov 25. Give ’em E-HEL: Army seeks industry ideas for counter-drone laser systems. The Enduring-High Energy Laser (E-HEL) program is the Army’s first program of record for a new family of high-energy lasers.  In the Army’s latest step to beef up its counter-unmanned aerial system capabilities, the service has formally asked industry for ideas to field high-energy laser systems capable of blasting small- to medium-sized drones out of the sky. According to a request for information filed late last week, the Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO) is seeking solutions to protect “semi fixed” and maneuver forces from Group 1 and 2 drones and Group 3 “one way attack” drones for its Enduring-High Energy Laser (E-HEL) program, the Army’s first program of record for a new family of high-energy lasers. RCCTO said it’s looking to acquire 20 E-HEL systems using a modular open systems approach, with an award expected to be “initiated” in the second quarter of fiscal year of 2026 “or later.”

“Interested sources responding to this RFI must have demonstrated expertise in the production of technically sophisticated laser weapon system components, supply chain management, integration, and assembly, a secret facility clearance, strong configuration management and quality controls, HEL weapon system experience, test experience, and the ability to support multiple concurrent weapon system integration activities,” the RFI read.

In addition to the E-HEL having to protect “semi fixed” and maneuver forces, it also must be able to mount on Joint Light Tactical Vehicles and be deployed as a “palletized” unit. It must also be ground transportable and meet requirements for C-17 transport.  Vendors will have to demonstrate their solutions in front of the Directed Energy Project Office (DEPO), which is under RCCTO, if they do not have recent government-witnessed test data, per the RFI. The demonstrations are taking place at the Dugway Proving Ground in Utah from Dec. 8-19 and Jan. 5-30. Responses to the RFI are due Nov. 21.

“DEPO will also witness the key attributes of fluence, tracker performance, engagement track range and laser quality track to determine if systems that do not achieve a hard kill on Group 3 UAS have the potential to scale and be lethal against Group 3 OWA [one way attack] threat UAS,” the RFI read.

Though the RFI does not guarantee solicitations, it does signal that the Pentagon is moving forward with its plans to field more directed energy weapons, which have long held hope that they could serve as a more affordable solution to shooting down drones. However, the Defense Department has struggled to bring the technology past initial development and demonstrations. 03 Nov 25. “Espionage drones” in Belgium as defence minister plans EUR 50m for C-UAS. Belgium’s Defence Minister, Theo Francken, said drones spotted above the Kleine-Brogel air base in Limburg at the weekend may have been used for espionage purposes. The Belga News Agency says it is a public secret that American nuclear weapons are stored at Kleine-Brogel and that F-35s will be stationed at the base from 2027 onwards. The news agency added that drones have also been observed above Deurne airport and the Ostend airport grounds in recent nights.

“When suspicious drones were detected above the Kleine-Brogel air base on Saturday night, a police helicopter gave chase,” the news agency said. “Attempts were also made to bring down the drones by jamming their signal. These attempts were however unsuccessful.”

The article quotes Francken on the incidents at Kleine-Brogel that occurred on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night: “How they operate exactly, where they hover, what they investigate and how long such a flight lasts: these are not accidents.”

On October 30, Francken announced a EUR 50 m investment for drone defence, which he hopes to get approved by Belgium’s Council of Ministers later this week. Sentrycs and Omnisys have formed a strategic collaboration that combines their technologies to improve the planning and deployment of sensor systems in multi-domain operations. 30 Oct 25. US emergency agency announces USD 500m in C-UAS funding. The United States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a component of the Department of Homeland Security, has published a Notice of Funding Opportunity for the Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (C-UAS) Grant Program.  The programme provides funding to enhance state, local, tribal and territorial capabilities to detect, identify, track or monitor uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS).  It will provide USD 500m to communities across the country over two fiscal years. FEMA said states can use this funding to “aggressively combat” the unlawful use of UAS. The FY 2026 C-UAS Grant Program application period will close on December 5, 2025.   In addition, the Department of Homeland Security has also launched a funding opportunity to help secure the FIFA World Cup. 31 Oct 25. Frontex concludes final tests in C-UAS prize contest. Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, has completed the final testing phase of its prize contest focused on countering the criminal use of drones at the European Union’s borders. The trials were hosted by the Portuguese Air Force, at Campo de Tiro base, in Samora Correia, providing real-life conditions to assess the systems in action. Four companies reached the final stage: Adevex Solutiones (Spain), Dat Con (Slovenia), MBDA France (France) and Nordic Air Defense (Sweden). Each demonstrated its technology against simulated drone threats such as smuggling and unauthorised surveillance. The winner of the contest will be announced in the coming weeks. The goal of the contest is to support European law enforcement with non-military tools to detect, track and stop drones used in unlawful cross-border activities. The selected systems were tested for detection accuracy, flexibility and suitability for use by border and coast guard teams across Europe. Russia’s Gumich RTK has exhibited the Impulse-PVO C-UAS uncrewed ground vehicle  at the Interpolitex-2025 International Exhibition of National Security Equipment, according to Linkedin post by Samuel Bendett, Researcher at the US Center for Naval Analyses.

“This system is designed to carry eight Interceptor kinetic projectiles,” said the original Telegram post. “The projectiles weigh 1.35 kg and have a speed of up to 200 km/h (the primary targets are reconnaissance drones). The system can operate in the frequency range from 700 to 6,200 MHz. The developer has also created a version of the system as a stationary air defence system. It is equipped with heating and ventilation systems, allowing it to be used year-round.”

31 Oct 25. Centauri Technologies integrates TriAD C-UAS weapon station into armoured vehicle platform. Centauri Technologies has announced in a Linkedin post that it integrated the TriAD Counter-UAS system onto an armoured vehicle platform, combining the CRx-30, CRx-40, and CRx-7 Remote Weapon Stations with advanced radar, RF, and electro-optical sensors into a unified, multi-layered defence system. The radar system has been supplied by EchoDyne. According to the post:“During recent testing, TriAD demonstrated its capability to detect, track, and neutralize aerial threats across the full engagement spectrum, validating the system’s AI-driven sensor fusion, real-time fire control, and hard-kill accuracy. TriAD represents a new generation of modular, export-flexible C-UAS technology, designed to meet the demands of modern warfare.”

31 Oct 25. DOK-ING and Valhalla Turrets develop uncrewed counter-drone system. DOK-ING and Valhalla Turrets have signed a teaming agreement to jointly develop counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) technologies, very/short-range air defence (V/SHORAD) systems and uncrewed ground vehicles.  The cooperation integrates DOK-ING’s robotic platforms with Valhalla’s turret portfolio and modular weapon and sensor payload architecture. As a direct result of the cooperation, the companies introduced a new C-UAS uncrewed system MV-8 Komodo + Mangart 25 AD at SIDEC 2025, an event organised by the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia. The integrated system is designed to provide capabilities for C-UAS operations, combat support and anti-armour operations. Rostec’s Shvable “exhibits high-power mobile laser C-UAS system at Interpolitex 2025.”  Russia’s Shvabe holding company, part of the Rostec State Corporation, has presented its first mobile laser for countering drones at the Interpolitex 2025 exhibition, according to the event website. According to the show report: “Its powerful, focused beam can disable several drones of various types within a minute,” said the system description. The entire system, including the control centre, fits in the back of a truck.The system is based on an air-cooled high-power laser and an optoelectronic system for target detection and tracking. The equipment is powered by onboard batteries, which can be recharged from external sources. All equipment, including the automated operator workstation, is mounted on an all-terrain truck. This ensures the system’s high mobility and allows for its rapid deployment to the desired location. The laser system can be used as a standalone counter-drone system or as part of a multi-layered air defence system. In this case, targeting sources are supplemented by external radar and acoustic stations, increasing the detection range. The control module can be remote, and the system itself can be highly mobile or, conversely, stationary. The laser system developed by specialists at the Shvabe holding company is capable of engaging several fast-moving UAVs of various types, including small FPV drones, within a minute. Furthermore, high-power lasers are safe for use near civilian infrastructure,” said Bekkhan Ozdoyev, Industrial Director of the Armaments, Ammunition, and Specialized Chemicals Cluster at Rostec State Corporation.

03 Nov 25. Boeing Boosts RAAF P-8A Capability with Major Upgrades, Aircraft Delivery.

  • Australia is first global customer of Increment 3 Block 2 modifications
  • 13th Poseidon increases fleet capability and operational reach
  • Final aircraft scheduled for delivery in 2026

Boeing [NYSE: BA] is strengthening Australia’s maritime surveillance and anti-submarine capability with the first Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-8A Poseidon inducted into an upgrade program as the service also begins to integrate its 13th aircraft into the fleet. Under the four-year Increment 3 Block 2 modifications, the RAAF’s P-8As will receive new antennas, sensors and software to improve computer processing and communication systems, allowing aircrews to search for, detect and target the world’s most advanced submarines. Australia is the first global P-8A customer to receive Increment 3 modifications. The newest RAAF P-8A Poseidon was delivered Sept. 29, with the 14th aircraft scheduled for delivery in 2026.

“These upgrades, together with the delivery of the 13th P-8A, mark two important advancements for Australia’s defence of its vast coastline,” said Naomi Smith, director of Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) Sustainment Operations. “Increment 3 Block 2 will deliver next-generation detection and targeting for aircrews, while the newest aircraft strengthens fleet readiness and operational reach, all while maintaining interoperability with the U.S. Navy P-8A fleet.”

The first two RAAF P-8As will be upgraded by Boeing at the Jacksonville maintenance, repair and overhaul facility. The RAAF aircraft are also the first international planes to be upgraded at the facility where teams continue to upgrade and deliver P-8As to the U.S. Navy.  The remaining aircraft will be modified by BDA at its Deeper Maintenance & Modification Facility near RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia.
