For the first time in over fifty years, Britain will help build military aircraft under contract for the US Air Force. A new contract between the UK and Boeing will create more than 150 new jobs in Birmingham and secures a further 190 jobs across the UK. It will see two existing Boeing 737 passenger aircraft significantly overhauled and upgraded to create two highly advanced prototype early-warning surveillance aircraft. The contract delivers an additional over £36m to the UK economy. The UK has already ordered three state-of-the-art Boeing E-7 Wedgetail early-warning aircraft, which will form a vital cornerstone of the UK’s national defence by using radar and sensors to detect incoming hostile aircraft, missiles, or drones, from more than 300 miles away. Wedgetail is scheduled to enter service with the Royal Air Force in 2026.
Currently, the E-7 Wedgetail programme supports 190 highly skilled jobs in Britain, with 130 of those based in Birmingham. As Boeing expands its production line, the new 150 jobs in the UK will modify two prototype E-7A Wedgetail aircraft using the airframe from new commercial aircraft which will be the first E-7A models received by the US.
The announcement comes after the launch of the Defence Industrial Strategy last week, which set out £250 million of new funding for new defence growth deals across the UK, and £182m to fund a new skills package to be delivered by five new defence technical excellence colleges to train and upskill thousands of workers.
Defence Secretary, John Healey MP, said: “The relationship between the UK and US has never been stronger, and this new deal with Boeing creates and supports hundreds of jobs across the UK – making defence an engine for growth and strengthening our collective security. The deal benefits both UK and US national security by strengthening the special relationship, while developing the fleet of surveillance aircraft both nations will share in the future – building skills among the workforce while ensuring military operations are more coordinated as a result of using the same systems.”
More than 40 UK-based suppliers are involved in the UK E-7 programme, including the construction of two new engineering facilities at RAF Lossiemouth, built with local Scottish suppliers. US companies also stand to benefit from the deal, with several major defence firms building individual parts to contribute to the global E-7 supply chain. Hundreds of American workers and engineers across the US will then continue to support the aircraft when it is delivered for final assembly and check out. 17 Sep 25. Cuashub.com said today that USMC launches drone task force summits to accelerate lethal UAS adoption. The Marine Corps has begun a series of drone task force summits aimed at speeding the service’s ability to operate small unmanned aerial systems at scale, service officials said in a posting on Sept. 8. The initiative draws on recent experimentation across units including Marine Corps Special Operations Command, the Infantry Battalion Experiment, and the Marine Corps Attack Drone Team (MCADT). The task force’s stated purpose is to organise, train and equip Marine Air-Ground Task Force elements to employ both lethal and nonlethal unmanned systems across distributed operations. Officials say the effort builds on years of development and fielding of organic precision fires capabilities for infantry formations and is designed to give small units concentrated effects at operationally relevant distances.
The Secretary of Defense’s “Unleashing U.S. Military Drone Dominance” memo is expected to accelerate procurement pathways that the summits aim to take advantage of.
MCADT, established in January 2025 by Training Command and the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory, has driven much of the Corps’ recent progress on armed FPV drones. Based at Weapons Training Battalion, Quantico, the team has worked to translate lessons from modern drone warfare into doctrine training and fleet integration.
In April, the MCADT carried out the service’s first kinetic live-fire FPV strike at Quantico. The writeup notes that a single FPV strike can cost under $5,000 compared with more than $80,000 for current infantry battalion organic missiles. It also says these drones can reach up to 20 kilometres, substantially extending squad and platoon reach beyond the 1–2 kilometre envelope of existing small-unit systems.
The task force is turning operational learning into formal guidance and training. Initiatives under way include a UAS/C-UAS integration handbook, expanded operator training pipelines, updated procurement “Blue List” systems, signature management training, and creation of communities of interest across the Corps.
The service is also integrating small UAS into marksmanship competitions and working with the Defense Innovation Unit to procure and distribute FPV and one-way attack drones.
To establish a training baseline, MCADT and the Marine Corps Tactics and Operations Group have drafted the Corps’ first Armed Drone Employment Tactics Techniques and Procedures pamphlet.
Squad certification against that pamphlet begins this fall, and the service will host the first Armed FPV Drone Employment Competition in October 2025 at MCB Quantico, followed by events in INDOPACOM at Camp Hansen, Okinawa in December and MCB Hawaii in January 2026.

Electro Optic Systems (EOS) has debuted its new its new high-energy laser weapon dubbed “Apollo,” at the DSEI event in London last week. The Canberra-based company said Apollo is scalable up to 150 kilowatts and designed to counter small and medium-sized drones. EOS describes the system as capable of destroying between 20 and 50 drones per minute, with a rapid retargeting rate and the ability to sustain engagements when connected to an external power source.
The launch follows an August contract with an undisclosed European NATO member for the export of a 100-kilowatt-class laser weapon. EOS said the deal marked the first international sale of a system in that power range, a milestone for both the company and the wider directed energy sector.
Apollo is packaged in a 20-foot ISO container for mobility and can reportedly be deployed in under two hours. EOS states the system can engage drones within a 3-kilometer range and disrupt sensors on larger platforms at distances of up to 15 kilometers. It is designed to integrate into NATO command-and-control and air defense networks or operate as a stand-alone platform.
EOS has been working on directed energy systems for more than four decades, moving from non-lethal dazzlers to higher-powered lasers. Apollo represents the next stage in that development, following the company’s introduction last year of a lower-power laser system for drone sensor disruption.
Dr. Andreas Schwer, EOS Group CEO, said the system is intended to address the growing challenge posed by drones in modern conflicts. He added that the platform is fully controlled by EOS and does not fall under U.S. export restrictions.

16 Sep 25. QinetiQ US has entered into an agreement through an Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) with Consortium Management Group, Inc. (CMG) on behalf of Consortium for Command, Control and Communications in Cyberspace (C5) with the U.S. Army Program Executive Office Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors (PEO IEW&S) to support Phase 0 specification development of the Future Advanced Long-range Common Optical/Netted-fires Sensor (FALCONS) system. This next-generation target acquisition system will enhance the Army’s battlefield sensing capabilities, establishing the foundation for Army sensor capabilities that will serve warfighters well into the 2030s and beyond.
FALCONS is designed to replace the current Long-Range Advanced Scout Surveillance System (LRAS3) and Fires Support Sensor System (FS3). The system will integrate the Army’s third-generation Forward-Looking Infrared (3GEN FLIR) technology with artificial intelligence for enhanced target detection and recognition, more than doubling current detection ranges while reducing soldier workload.
“This OTA enables QinetiQ US to leverage our next-generation sensor expertise from the ground up, shaping a program that will revolutionize Army target acquisition,” said Jonathan Riksen, executive vice president and general manager of QinetiQ US’ Solutions business. “Our deep understanding of soldier needs and proven capabilities in AI-enabled target recognition will be critical as we work with PM Ground Sensors to define a system that more than doubles current detection ranges while revolutionizing how warfighters acquire and engage targets.”
Through this Phase 0 effort, QinetiQ US will help define critical system specifications, ensuring FALCONS reflects both current operational needs and future battlefield requirements through technology assessments, system modeling, and direct soldier feedback.
This latest award builds upon QinetiQ US’s long-standing partnership with the U.S. Army in developing and deploying advanced sensor and targeting systems. The company will apply lessons learned from previous successful Army programs to accelerate FALCONS development, ensuring the system meets both current and emerging battlefield requirements.

DroneShield (ASX:DRO) is pleased to announce it has surpassed 4,000 systems sold worldwide with the receipt of a package of 2 standalone contracts totalling $7.9 m for handheld systems for delivery to the U.S. Department of Defense. DroneShield expects to deliver all equipment in Q4 2025, with cash payment expected in Q4 2025. No additional material conditions need to be satisfied. There is no obligation for any additional contracts from this customer.
DroneShield has previously received standalone orders from this customer. These repeat orders strengthen DroneShield’s position as a trusted provider of mission-critical solutions to address the growing challenge of drone threats on the modern battlefield and the civilian sector.

16 Sep 25. Cuashub.com said today that Oklahoma Guard holds major counter-drone training at Camp Gruber. The Oklahoma National Guard staged its largest counter-drone exercise to date on September 13, as Soldiers of the 45th Infantry Brigade took part in Exercise Thunderstruck 2.0, a capstone event designed to test tactics for countering unmanned aerial threats. The training brought together state leaders, industry representatives, active-duty personnel and emergency management officials to observe how units are adapting to drone warfare. Scenarios included a Chinook helicopter insertion, movement through wooded terrain and the clearance of a simulated enemy trench under multi-domain threats.
Maj. Gen. Thomas Mancino, Oklahoma’s adjutant general, described the effort as critical preparation for future conflicts: “The purpose of Operation Thunderstruck is to place our Soldiers and Airmen in scenarios where they can experience drone warfare firsthand to develop the expertise needed on the future battlefield,” he said.
The exercise follows a July directive from the Pentagon titled Unleashing U.S. Military Drone Dominance, which called for the services to treat drone warfare as a core element of readiness.
Lt. Col. Brent Hill, who oversees the Guard’s counter-UAS and launched effects program, said the training reflects lessons from Ukraine: “We are preparing for the future battlefield and constantly evolving, constantly learning,” Hill said.
Camp Gruber has expanded its infrastructure to support such efforts, including the construction of a trench-warfare lane modeled after positions seen in Ukraine. It is currently the only active trench training site in the National Guard. Work is also underway on a new complex dedicated to unmanned systems and launched effects, featuring operations centers, fabrication facilities and launch pads.
The Oklahoma Guard launched its UAS/Launched Effects Program in 2022 in partnership with state agencies, industry and academia. Earlier this year, it hosted Thunderstruck 1.0 as part of the same series. Looking ahead, the Guard plans Exercise Lightning Strike in April 2026, which will focus on drones in emergency response and domestic operations.
“Oklahoma is having an impact on issues of national and strategic importance,” Mancino said, noting support from state leadership in building what he called a “leading laboratory” for counter-drone development.

DroneShield announced yesterday that it has expanded the capabilities of its DroneSentry counter-drone platform by integrating technology from Sentrycs. This update introduces advanced cyber takeover features, controlled drone landing, and forensic analysis tools to the existing multi-layered system.
The DroneSentry solution already includes detection technologies from partners such as Echodyne, Bosch, and Teledyne FLIR, as well as directed-energy defeat capabilities from Epirus. These components are managed through the DroneSentry-C2 command-and-control platform, which now benefits from the addition of Sentrycs’ cyber-over-RF capabilities.

IPG Photonics has publicly introduced its CROSSBOW MINI 3 kW high-energy laser (HEL) system during the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) event in London this week. The system is designed to address the growing challenge posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS), particularly smaller drones categorized as Group 1 and Group 2. The CROSSBOW MINI is a compact, battery-powered laser platform intended for field deployment. It can operate independently or be integrated with existing command and control systems and radar networks. According to IPG, the system is capable of operating for up to 12 hours on internal battery power, with options for extended use via external sources. Other models in the CROSSBOW product line include the 500 W Dazzler, which is currently available, and the 8 kW HEL system, which is open for pre-orders.
IPG reports that the 3 kW version has been tested in field conditions and has successfully neutralized over 100 drones in various scenarios, including swarm attacks. The system is intended for use in both military and civilian settings, such as protecting infrastructure like government buildings, ports, and public venues.
“The CROSSBOW product line establishes IPG as a complete laser defense systems provider,” said Ben Allison, VP of IPG Defense Products. “It transitions us from a component supplier to a full solution partner, delivering top-tier software, optics, and lasers in a single operational package while leveraging our extensive manufacturing capabilities and laser expertise.”

MARSS and Frankenburg Technologies formalised a new partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at DSEI 2025 this week. The agreement will see Frankenburg’s advanced missile technology integrated into MARSS’s NiDAR Command and Control (C4) platform, creating a layered defence system aimed at countering emerging aerial threats with greater affordability and scalability.
Redefining the Economics of Air Defence
Modern air defence is increasingly shaped by cost dynamics. While adversaries deploy inexpensive drones and loitering munitions in large numbers, defenders often rely on effectors that cost hundreds of thousands of pounds per intercept. This imbalance places a heavy financial burden on defence systems.
Frankenburg Technologies, headquartered in Estonia, is working to shift that equation. Its new interceptor missiles are designed specifically to neutralise class 1–3 drones. These solid rocket-fuelled missiles are lightweight, fast, and built for mass production, reducing intercept costs by over tenfold. Delivered in simple “click-on, click-off” canisters, they allow for quick reloads without specialised equipment, offering a practical and scalable solution for modern air defence.
NiDAR is already deployed at more than 50 sites globally, including ports, naval platforms, and critical infrastructure. It provides multi-domain protection across air, land, surface, and sub-surface environments. The system is sensor and effector agnostic, integrating data from diverse sources into a single, intuitive interface.
With the addition of Frankenburg’s missile system, MARSS is enhancing NiDAR’s layered defence architecture. Operators can now select from a broader range of countermeasures – including RF jammers, Remote Weapon Systems, autonomous interceptors, and affordable missiles – guided by NiDAR’s autonomous threat response recommendations.

Olsen Actuators and Drives have successfully delivered a series of development Commanders Armoured Sight Hood actuators to Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) a leading defence engineering company specialising in the design, manufacture and support of military vehicles used by the British Army. RBSL has a proud heritage, having designed and delivered many of the British Army’s armoured vehicle fleets. RBSL provides in-service support for these vehicles, including one of the UK’s latest vehicle programmes for the British Army, the Challenger 3. The Challenger 3 is a network-enabled, digital Main Battle Tank with state-of-the-art lethality, upgraded survivability, plus world-class surveillance and target acquisition capabilities.
After working successfully on the Bunker Blast Door project, Olsen and RBSL have collaborated to deliver a mission critical vision system for the commander on the Challenger 3. Over the past three years, Olsen has worked closely with RBSL to develop a fully custom solution that meets their specification, fully qualifying the manufactured actuators to specified defence standards.
The custom rotary actuator solution, designed and manufactured in the UK, provides a highly precise, high torque and near zero backlash solution to ensure the safety of the British Army crew in the field. In addition, the longevity and low maintenance of electro-mechanical actuation systems was especially valuable to RBSL, where system failure or downtime can have mission-critical consequences.

L3Harris has signed an agreement with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to supply WESCAM MX™-10D EO/IR sensor systems, enabling the delivery of ready-now land vehicles with effective Counter-Unmanned Systems (C-UxS/ C-UAS).
