12 Sep 25. IPG Photonics displays C-UAS laser system. US-based laser manufacturer IPG Photonics showcased its Crossbow Mini 3 kW laser directed energy weapon (LDEW) for counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) operations at the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) 2025 exhibition held in London from 9 to 12 September. Ben Allison, vice-president of IPG Defense, told Janes that despite this being the company’s first defence product, they believed that their established production base as a commercial supplier of laser modules would mean competitive price points and delivery capability. IPG has worked with unnamed partners to create a 181 kg LDEW system with electro-optic and midwave infrared (MWIR) cameras and command-and-control (C2) software, called Crossbow. The 3 kW Crossbow Mini has a range of 300–1,300 m, effective against group one and two UASs, usually quadcopters under 1 m in diameter. Defeat times are usually under 10 seconds per UAS, Allison said. Lockheed Martin selected Crossbow as the laser weapon for its Sanctum C-UAS and conducted four field tests with it in the United States since February. Allison said the company is working with the US Department of State to register its products to comply with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) legislation for possible future sales. IPG is working on a larger 8 kW system. Allison said increased laser power of that increment contributes more to shorter UAS defeat times and less to increased range. Batteries for the systems can be charged from ordinary domestic 220–240 V power supplies or down to as little as 12 V and are easy to switch for new ones. 09 Sep 25. Cuashub.com said today that US Army trials ODIN for armored vehicles. R2 has announced the first deployment of its ODIN spectrum awareness system on U.S. Army armored platforms during a recent live maneuver exercise. The trial marked the first time passive radio frequency (RF) sensors have been integrated and operated on tanks and armored vehicles under field conditions. According to the company, ODIN was installed, tested and validated over the course of more than a week at one of the Army’s largest training areas. The system was embedded into Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, where it operated on the move in live combat maneuver scenarios against first-person view (FPV) drones. Unlike active sensing technologies, ODIN is passive and emits no signals, which R2 says provides situational awareness without revealing a platform’s position. The exercise tested the platform’s ability to detect, geolocate and integrate data with existing Army command-and-control systems while under operational stress. R2 said the demonstration showed ODIN’s potential to enhance survivability and lethality for armored forces by providing early warning of unmanned aerial threats in contested environments. The company added that ODIN has been shortlisted by the U.S. Army as a candidate passive RF solution for armored brigades, describing the exercise as a significant step toward future fielding decisions.

09 Sep 25. Cuashub.com said today that Argus Interception unveils drone-to-drone interceptor system. Germany-based counter-drone firm Argus Interception has announced the launch of its A1-FALKE system in the UK, presenting a quadcopter designed to detect, track and capture unauthorized drones in flight. Founded in 2023 by former military officers, Argus Interception developed the A1-FALKE as a sensor-equipped interceptor drone that combines radar, lidar and AI-enabled software with a net launcher for physically capturing targets. The system can be mounted on vehicles, deployed at temporary sites, or operated from fixed locations, as well as integrating with existing command-and-control platforms. The A1-FALKE operates by flying to a designated intercept point, where its onboard sensors take over before engaging. Operators retain decision-making authority, with intervention carried out through a single command to direct the interceptor to capture a target. According to the company, the system is designed for ease of operation, maintenance and rearming. Argus Interception states that the A1-FALKE has already been deployed operationally and recognized by European security agencies. 09 Sep 25. Singapore selects Boeing P-8 Poseidon as its next Maritime Patrol Aircraft. Defense Minister Chan Chun Sing told US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth about the decision during a meeting at the Pentagon. according to a government statement. Singapore has decided to acquire the Boeing P-8A Poseidon multi-mission maritime patrol aircraft, according to a statement from the Southeast Asian nation. Singapore’s Ministry of Defence said in a news release that Defense Minister Chan Chun Sing told US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth about the decision during a meeting at the Pentagon on Sept 9. The release said that Singapore will acquire four P-8As as the first phase of Singapore’s recapitalization of its maritime security capabilities, which seek to strengthen its maritime situation awareness and ability to counter sub-surface threats. It is unclear what the future phases of Singapore’s efforts to refresh its maritime security capabilities would entail. The P-8As will replace five Fokker 50 maritime patrol aircraft currently operated by the Republic of Singapore Air Force. Singapore had said in March that it was considering the P-8A, alongside the Airbus C-295, as its next maritime patrol aircraft. Singapore has made a number of naval-related acquisitions in recent years. It is taking delivery of six Invincible-class diesel-electric submarines from Germany’s TKMS and will be introducing six multi-role combat vessels and four offshore patrol vessels in the coming years. It is also upgrading its six existing Formidable-class frigates, including the installation of the Blue Spear anti-ship missiles. Singapore’s economy is heavily dependent on its busy ports, and the island naton is located at the narrow choke point where the Straits of Malacca meets the South China Sea, which are heavily trafficked by commercial shipping plying the shipping lanes between Asia and the Middle East as well as Europe. 09 Sep 25. US Army launches FALCONS programme. The US Army has launched its Future Advanced Long-range Common Optical/Netted-fires Sensor (FALCONS) programme, which once mature will replace the ground service’s legacy Long Range Advanced Scout Surveillance System (LRAS3), service officials said in August. Programme officials from the army’s Product Manager Ground Sensors (PM GS), which is spearheading the development effort, signed three separate Other Transaction Authority (OTA) agreements in August for Phase 0 work on the FALCONS initiative, according to the officials. Phase 0 work will consist of research and development efforts to construct viable prototypes of the FALCONS system, the officials said in a statement at the time. Each OTA industry partner, which includes Leonardo DRS, Elbit Systems of America, and QinetiQ, will receive USD2 m as part of the Phase 0 FALCONS prototype contract, which is anticipated to last for 12 months, programme officials said in the statement. The entire FALCONS development effort is expected to progress across four separate phases, with OTA awards being issued for each phase. The entire prototype development initiative is scheduled to last over 54 months in total, programme officials said in the August statement. Phase 0, specifically, will consist of “technology maturity assessments, preliminary system model development, system specification review, and soldier feedback opportunities” of FALCONS’ prototype technologies, programme officials said. A phased approach to the FALCONS development will “set the conditions for a prototype development phase that will maximise competition” for the overall programme, said US Army Lieutenant Colonel Ryan Welch, product manager for Ground Sensors.(Source: Janes)

Axon (Nasdaq: AXON), the global leader in public safety technologies, today announced that Dedrone by Axon released a comprehensive report, The Current & Future State of Airspace Defense[1] , revealing how low-cost, rapidly evolving drone threats are reshaping battlefields and national security strategies worldwide. The report debuts at DSEI 2025, where Dedrone is exhibiting their cutting-edge counter-drone solutions and also delivering an element of the airspace security for the event. Drawing on comprehensive operational datasets from Dedrone’s global sensor network across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, the report reveals concerning trends in drone behavior across the region, including a 4.3x increase in DIY drone detections in 2025 as compared to 2024 and an observation that 37.5% of all 2025 detections to date occurred in low-visibility conditions.

“The drone threat is evolving faster than most defences can respond,” said Aaditya Devarakonda, CEO of Dedrone by Axon. “At DSEI, we’re not just talking about the problem; we’re demonstrating solutions that are live, operational and ready to scale. Dedrone’s report exposes critical vulnerabilities in current defense approaches. While 83% of 2025 detections were still DJI drones, it shows a meaningful drop from the 95% of detections that were DJI in the year before over the same time period. This growing prevalence of a much broader array of drone types including DIY and even RF-silent flights signals a tactical shift that could blind existing sensor networks.

“We’re witnessing the collapse of the old air defence economics,” said Ash Alexander-Cooper OBE, VP EMEA and APAC at Dedrone by Axon. “A $20,000 Shahed drone can prompt the launch of a $4 m Patriot missile. The asymmetry is unsustainable unless we fundamentally rethink how we detect, classify and defeat these threats.”

09 Sep 25. Sensor solutions provider HENSOLDT is now offering its Spexer radar family as naval solution. An initial contract has already been signed with the navy of a NATO country. The naval version focuses on the detection and defence against drones at sea. In addition, the Spexer radar scans the sea surface for anti-ship missiles and submarine periscopes. The Spexer radar family offers high-performance surveillance radars for various ranges for the automatic detection and classification of ground, sea and low-flying air targets. The Spexer 2000 is part of Rheinmetall Air Defence’s new Skyranger 30 anti-aircraft gun tank (FlakPz). It is also used in the German cUAS programmes for the protection of field camps (ASUL), HoWiSM (high-energy laser for drone defence) and German Armed Forces’ NNbS air defence system for close and short-range protection. HENSOLDT has decades of experience with radar systems in the naval sector and is actively driving forward the further development of key technologies in this area. Various versions of radars from the TRS-4D product family are already in use on board ships belonging to NATO partners.

09 Sep 25. Hensoldt supplies long-range radar for German training facility. Hensoldt has completed the initial delivery of a long-range radar system to the German Navy’s Naval Technical School in Parow. The delivery marks a step in the project aimed to “eliminate obsolescence” of the Sachsen-class F124 ships’ long-range sensor systems. The project, which commenced in 2021, covers delivery of three TRS-4D LR long-range radars for the F124 frigate and an additional system for the Parow school. The system at the Parow school will serve as a facility for testing, reference, and training purposes. It provides a platform for both user and technician training, as well as for advancing system developments. Hensoldt Naval & Ground Radars head Markus Rothmaier said: “The installation of the first long-range sensor at the Naval Technical School in Parow is an important step in the project. Hensoldt has partnered with ELTA Systems, a subsidiary of IAI, for this project. The S-band radars will endow the German armed forces with ballistic missile defence capabilities for the first time. Parallel to this navy project, Hensoldt secured a contract to upgrade land-based airspace surveillance within the Hughes Air Defence Radar Successor programme for the German Air Force. The TRL-4D LR radar systems used here are similar to those for the navy and are also produced in collaboration with ELTA Systems. In both contracts, Hensoldt is responsible for producing transmitter and receiver modules, ensuring component availability within Germany. Additionally, Hensoldt is enhancing the German Navy’s F126 frigate programme through a joint effort with Thales to supply TRS-4D naval radars, aiming to improve fleet surveillance and combat functions.
