21 Jan 25. Poland Showcases .50 Gatling Counter Drone System. Polish industry is making strides in positioning itself as a leading developer and supplier of ground defence equipment with counter drone being a particular focus.

The Tarnów Mechanical Works ground counter drone solution developed in collaboration with the Military University of Technology is intended to offer an effective yet relatively low-cost solution to the small drone and unmanned aerial system (UAS). The system is designed for remote operation either as a stationary towed system, on a vessel or mounted on a vehicle for mobility.

It consists of a .50 calibre four-barrel gatling type WLKM 12.7 mm (.50 calibre) weapon with electrically powered traverse and elevation. Fire controls include top mounted electro-optic sights with either/both high-resolution day TV and/or thermal imaging video, a laser rangefinder and digital ballistic computation.

The weapon is able to accept target detection data from a separate independent surveillance and tracking radar with fifteen-kilometre range. The weapon has a maximum effective range of 2000 meters and rate of fire controlled at between fifty and two-hundred round-per-minute.

Three modes of operation can be offered fully automatic in which the system acquires, tracks and engages entirely on its own once provided a target, semi-automatic which provided auto-track assistance to the operator, and fully manual tracking and firing by the operator.

Field evaluations have indicated that “automatic” has displayed the most effective use of the system especially against small drones. Once the operator initiates clearance to engage, the weapon system itself conducts the entire hard-kill process.

The system has a number of advantages in the adaptability of the system provided for the simplicity and flexibility of using the system, that be easily towed to a firing position to defend a fixed site. It has also been integrated on to a vehicle, in one case on Huta Stalowa Wola’s Waran wheeled armoured personnel carrier, although others are clearly possible.

In addition, .50 ammunition utilized is widely available and with well-established lethality against not only aerial targets but ground threats as well. The electrically powered gatling weapon also is a proven reliable approach.

Its combination of existing proven and readily available technologies, components, and effectors offers a straightforward, affordable, and reliably effective solution that can be fielded in sufficient numbers in addressing the unmanned drone threats.

The system official name is System Zwalczania Dronów (Drone Countermeasures System) but it has been referred to in some media as the “Monster”.

The concept began development in 2018 with hardware live-fire testing at the Central Air Force Training Ground in Ustka in late 2021. Further testing occurred in early 2022 with company officials confirming the existence and progress of the development.

The systems recent public display at MSPO 2024 is understood to have sparked interest from a number of potential military users.

23 Jan 25. Airbus’ A320 ATRA with Eurofighter nose completes first flight. The aircraft has been transformed into a flying “test bed” for the new E-Scan radar project. Airbus has revealed the completion of ‘first flight’ for German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) modified Airbus A320 advanced technology research aircraft (ATRA) for the E-Scan radar project. This aircraft, which now features the nose of a Eurofighter jet, has been transformed into a flying ‘test bed’ to test the new E-Scan radar. Airbus E-Scan radar project manager Thomas Hirsch said: “We are operating the aircraft in close collaboration with the DLR and the German Armed Forces to test a new radar for the Eurofighter and bring it to maturity.” To accommodate the Eurofighter’s nose and the active electronically scanned array (AESA-MK1 radar), Airbus Defence and Space and Commercial Aircraft teams have redesigned the aircraft’s front section and reinforced its airframe. All modifications adhere to the stringent standards of Airbus Commercial Aircraft in Toulouse, the type-certification holder, Airbus said. With the successful completion of its maiden flight, the A320 ATRA is poised to begin extensive radar testing this year. The decision to utilise the A320 ATRA rather than a Eurofighter itself for these tests stems from the former’s ability to undergo a shorter clearance process and remain airborne for extended periods.

Hirsch said: “The A320 ATRA has a significantly shorter clearance process and can stay in the air longer than a Eurofighter.”

As a result, “testing time” in a real-life environment is expected to be earlier, quicker and with a longer time on the A320 aircraft.

The AESA-MK1 radar, following its development, is planned to be onboard the Spanish “Halcón I” and German “Quadriga” Eurofighters to improve their air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities and adding electronic warfare functions. Earlier in January 2025, Germany-based sensor solutions company Hensoldt was selected by the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative (DLR QCI) to partake in the QUA-SAR research project to advance radar remote sensing technology.  The German company will collaborate with the German Aerospace Centre’s Microwaves and Radar Institute and Tensor AI Solutions on the project. 22 Jan 25. Cuashub.com said today that German military to be granted authority to shoot down drones posing imminent risk. In a statement issued on Jan 15, the German Federal Cabinet approved of regulatory proposals that would provide the German armed forces the authority to shoot down drones illegally flying near critical infrastructure sites. The amendment to the Aviation Security Act, which will now go to Bundestag for ratification, will reflect the fact state security forces do not have the technology required to effectively mitigate drone threats and for the first time will grant the military the authority to intervene. In the release, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser reflected that the rapid proliferation of hostile drone usage has outpaced police authorities’ ability to effectively defend against them, meaning that:

“It is therefore necessary that we create the authority in the Aviation Security Act that allows the Bundeswehr to intervene in the event of serious dangers – including, as a last resort, to shoot down illegally flying drones.”

The statement follows reports on Monday, Jan 13 that up to 10 drones had been spotted over the Manching air base, location of Airbus’ Eurofighter System Support Center and a military aerodrome. The legislation permits the Bundeswehr to act only in scenarios whereby it is deemed that a drone that poses an imminent risk to human life or to critical infrastructure site and that armed force is the only viable option to defeat. The inherent subjectivity of the legislation does potentially raise questions as to how, and when, the Bundeswehr will be able to leverage their new powers. Traditionally, this sort of authority would be applied specifically designated areas within a certain radius, as was the case recently in the US, whereby both operators and law enforcement/ military have clear guidelines on when lethal force can be deployed. As this is not the case here, it could lead to uncertainty for operators on at what stage responsibility transitions from law enforcement to the military, and when they can deploy lethal force. Tron Future Tech, a rapidly expanding Taiwanese defense and technology startup, has secured a contract with Taiwan’s military to supply 26 advanced anti-drone systems. These systems will be deployed across Taiwan’s outlying islands to address increasing drone-related threats in the region. The systems feature 4D hybrid beamforming Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, passive RF detection and jamming capabilities. With a customizable detection range of up to six kilometers, they are specifically designed to counter drones employing frequency-hopping technology to evade detection.

Key features include:

  • AESA Radar (T.Radar): Capable of track-while-scan and spotlight modes, enabling continuous tracking of multiple targets.
  • RF Detector (T.Sensor): Detects drones and their operators before takeoff and identifies drone models and manufacturers, aiding preemptive threat mitigation.
  • AI Integration: Optimizes the system’s ability to neutralize drone swarms and manage simultaneous threats effectively.

Strategic implications

The deployment of these systems is part of an ongoing effort to bolster Taiwan’s defense against “grey-zone” operations, including incursions by drones into Taiwanese airspace. The systems are expected to enhance situational awareness and provide a robust response to aerial threats near Taiwan’s borders. This initiative is part of Taiwan’s broader effort to modernize its defense capabilities in light of escalating regional tensions and the increasing use of UAS in reconnaissance and potential hostile actions from neighbors such as China and North Korea. In addition to military applications, Tron Future Tech’s anti-drone systems have been deployed at critical infrastructure sites, including Hsinchu Science Park and key reservoirs. The contract reflects Taiwan’s proactive measures to counter evolving threats, particularly from UAS, as regional security dynamics continue to shift. The deployment of these systems is expected to serve as a critical component of Taiwan’s layered defense strategy.

22 Jan 25. Cuashub.com said today that PGA Tour commits to securing against drone threats. As drone activity increasingly disrupts professional sports, the PGA Tour is taking steps to ensure the safety and integrity of its events. For the Farmers Insurance Open, which will be held at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California, the Tour has renewed its partnership with drone detection firm SkySafe to monitor and address unauthorized drones during the tournament.

The presence of drones above such events is not just a distraction for players and fans, but also poses a potential security risk if these drones were to be equipped for a hostile purpose.

“The safety of our players, fans, and sponsors is our top priority,” said Andrew Harmatys, Chief Operating Officer of the tournament.

This marks the third year SkySafe has provided security for the event. In 2023, the company detected 12 rogue drones during the week of the tournament, leading to the arrests of nine drone operators.

Using the SkySafe system, operators can pinpoint the launch location of rogue drones without requiring additional hardware or infrastructure from event organizers. Approved drones, such as those used for media coverage, are “whitelisted,” ensuring that only unauthorized aircraft are flagged.

SkySafe has also worked with other organizations, including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, to secure major events such as college football games.

“Our technology provides real-time visibility into aerial threats, enabling rapid responses to unauthorized activity,” said Melissa Swisher, chief revenue officer of SkySafe.

The PGA Tour is taking proactive measures during a time of growing concerns over drone incursions across professional sports. According to reports, the NFL recorded over 2,800 drone incidents during the 2023 season, up from about 2,500 the previous year. Drones have disrupted high-profile games, including a recent NFL playoff matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

However, taking direct action against rogue drones remains limited to federal authorities, which are typically deployed only for marquee events like the Super Bowl. Professional leagues, including the NFL and Major League Baseball, are lobbying Congress to grant local law enforcement the authority to neutralize drones during events.

For now, partnerships like the PGA Tour’s with SkySafe, which enable the detection and apprehension of operators, represent the extent to which drone security can be provided for such events.

22 Jan 25. Cuashub.com said today that  U.S. Navy enhances C-UAS capability with modified Hellfires. At least two U.S. Navy Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) are now equipped with additional counter-UAS capabilities following modifications to their Surface-to-Surface Missile Modules. These upgrades, prompted by increasing threats in regions like the Red Sea, represent a significant upgrade to the ships’ ability to handle drone threats.

The USS Indianapolis was the first to receive the upgrade, which was completed in Bahrain during its deployment with the Navy’s 5th Fleet. The modifications integrate Longbow Hellfire missiles – originally designed for targeting small boats – with software and hardware updates to enable anti-drone capabilities. The ship’s mission in the region included promoting freedom of navigation and upholding the rules-based international order.

Capt. Matthew Lehmann, program manager for LCS Mission Modules, shared details of the enhancement with reporters:

“We were able to work with IWS 80 and get Longbow Hellfire with C-UAS capability installed on USS Indianapolis while they were in Fifth Fleet before they transited home, which is an enormous win for C-UAS capability for LCS,” he said.

The Surface-to-Surface Missile Module, which carries 24 vertically launched AGM-114L Longbow Hellfire missiles, has been repurposed for counter-drone operations. This capability builds on the missile’s previous use in anti-aircraft roles by the U.S. Army and Apache helicopters.

Rear Adm. Kevin Smith, Program Executive Officer for Unmanned and Small Combatants, stated in a Naval Sea Systems Command release that the integration “enhances our ability to project power and maintain freedom of maneuver in contested environments.”

While the upgraded system was operationally deployed on the Indianapolis, no drones were downed by the Longbow Hellfires during its deployment. Capt. Lehmann noted that other assets neutralized threats before they entered the ship’s range. The USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul has also received the same capability, with additional LCS platforms expected to follow.

These upgrades are part of a broader effort to strengthen the Navy’s LCS fleet amid evolving threats in the Red Sea, Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions. Other recent enhancements include the Mk.70 Payload Delivery System, a containerized Mk.41 vertical launch system seen on the USS Nantucket and the Independence-class USS Savannah.

US Navy’s USS Indianapolis LCS gets C-UAS capability.  The programme upgraded the SSMM’s software and hardware in 2024 to enhance the ship’s defence during deployment.  The US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Mission Modules programme office has integrated the upgraded Counter-Uncrewed Aircraft System (C-UAS) capabilities aboard the forward-deployed Freedom-class littoral combat ship USS Indianapolis (LCS 17).  USS Indianapolis (LCS 17) was commissioned in 2019 in Burns Harbor, Indiana.  The programme upgraded surface-to-surface missile module’s (SSMM) software and hardware in autumn 2024 to bolster the ship’s defensive capabilities while deployed.   This advancement displays the adaptability of the SSMM in countering diverse threats as well as marks a step in the Navy’s ongoing efforts to modernise its fleet.  Uncrewed and Small Combatants programme executive officer Kevin Smith said: “This rapid integration of C-UAS capabilities enhances our ability to project power and maintain freedom of manoeuvre in contested environments.

“By equipping LCS with advanced, flexible systems like the SSMM, we are not only addressing immediate threats but also strengthening the Navy’s overall strategy for operational agility, deterrence and sustained dominance in littoral regions.”

The SSMM, a part of the LCS Surface Warfare Mission Package, was initially conceived to improve the ship’s engagement range and target capacity with Longbow Hellfire missiles against small boat threats.   However, in 2022, a modified version of the SSMM successfully conducted a land attack demonstration.  The Program Executive Office for Uncrewed and Small Combatants continues to lead the charge in equipping littoral combat ships with these mission-specific capabilities, ensuring they can provide assured access and address threats in littoral zones.   As a class of Small Surface Combatants, the LCS class is said to be a fast, agile platform designed for operations in near-shore environments, capable of countering modern coastal threats.   It supports missions such as forward presence, maritime security, sea control, and deterrence operations.  The class includes two versions: the Freedom variant and the Independence variant, each developed by two different industry teams.   The Freedom variant features a steel monohull design and is built by Lockheed Martin at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin.   The Independence variant, with an aluminium trimaran design, was initially constructed by a team led by General Dynamics Bath Iron Works. 22 Jan 25. AALTO commences Kenya-based operations of Zephyr HAPS. Airbus Defence and Space (DS) subsidiary company AALTO has begun flight operations of the Zephyr high-altitude pseudo-satellite (HAPS) out of its newly established ‘AALTOPORT’ in Kenya. The Farnborough-based company announced the milestone on 21 January, two days after online flight tracker services recorded the first flight on 19 January and six months after the then CEO of AALTO, Samer Halawi, told Janes in July 2024 that the company planned to open up Kenya as its first new operating location (Halawi was succeeded by Hughes Boulnois in October 2024).

“This weekend, from its first launch and landing facility in Kenya, AALTO completed the first successful launch of Zephyr in 2025. After climbing to 60,000 ft, our solar-powered Zephyr has now been flying continuously over Kenya for over 48 hours. It remains the only fixed-wing HAPS to demonstrate day- and night-time operations in the stratosphere,” AALTO said, adding, “The establishment of an AALTOPORT in Kenya is unprecedented in the HAPS industry. Thanks to a pioneering regulatory landscape, a purpose-built Zephyr facility has been developed in Laikipia County in 2024. Through their support, national authorities led by the Kenya Space Agency and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority have demonstrated their vision to champion cutting-edge aerospace technologies. 20 Jan 25. “We need help” – American Correctional Association’s Rob Green on the drone challenge. In a recent interview on This Week in Drones with David Lewin, Rob Green, Executive Director of the American Correctional Association (ACA) discusses how drones are used to deliver contraband to correctional facilities. Green characterizes the issue as a “true crisis,” citing its severe threat to security and major disruption to rehabilitation programs. Drones are delivering large quantities of contraband causing lockdowns and endangering both staff and incarcerated individuals. “These are large amounts of drugs, large amounts of cell phones, weapons, things that are extremely dangerous to our occupation that are being delivered into the systems at a great cost. It is a major criminal enterprise.” Green explained.

A critical challenge lies in the inability to control what flies over a prison. “We do not own the airspace over top of correctional facilities,” Green notes. To combat the crisis, he advocates for a multi-pronged approach combining technological solutions, legislative reform, and public awareness campaigns. He referenced successful operations like Georgia’s Operation Skyhawk to demonstrate the potential of coordinated efforts to deter and prosecute offenders. Green emphasizes the need for education and public understanding, urging recognition of correctional professionals’ dedication: “Our correctional system leaders are doing an incredible job every day.” Collaboration between stakeholders, including lawmakers and technology providers, is vital for cost-effective, sustainable solutions. “We need help,” Green states, calling for collective action to address this growing threat and safeguard rehabilitation efforts.

20 Jan 25. Solar Group tests India’s counter-drone swarm system. India’s Solar Group has tested a counter drone swarm system. Developed by Solar subsidiary Economic Explosives Ltd, the Bhargavastra multi-layered counter-drone system was tested at the Gopalpur Seaward Firing Ranges on January 12 and 13.  The company reports that the system successfully hit designated virtual targets over 2.5 kilometres away, demonstrating a capability to neutralise large-scale drone attacks. Bhargavastra is being developed for the Indian Army, representatives of which were present at the test, for integration on an all-terrain vehicle. It includes a command and control system, radar, and seeker-equipped mini-missiles with a range of 6 kilometres. The system is designed to engage up to 64 targets simultaneously. An additional soft-kill layer will be integrated as part of the product development. French companies CERBAIR and GEOS have announced a partnership to offer accessible anti-drone detection, classification and neutralisation systems tailored to high-risk areas and customers with growing security needs. CERBAIR will extend its market reach via GEOS’ field deployment capabilities, while GEOS will integrate counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) technology into its offerings for customers in sensitive areas The companies said the partnership‍ is in response to calls from the Minister of the French Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, for a “salutary leap forward” in the face of the increasing threat from UAS. At the beginning of 2019, GEOS joined the French group ADIT, a European leader in strategic intelligence and compliance, in which the French state is a shareholder, thereby expanding the range of services offered by GEOS. 15 Jan 25. Spain’s AESA reports drone operator numbers rose 27% year-on-year in 2024. The State Aviation Safety Agency (AESA) has ended 2024 with the registration of 119,712 unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operators in Spain, an increase of 27% compared to the previous year, according to an AESA press release. In 2024, 25,679 new UAS operators have been registered with the Agency, reflecting, once again, the growth and development of the national drone industry.

“The entry into force on June 25 of the new Royal Decree 517/2024 has marked a turning point in boosting the sector, as it has established a national regulatory framework for the civil use of UAS consistent with that of the European Union, providing stability and legal certainty to the drone sector in Spain,” said the press report. “The aim of this regulation is to promote the provision of services and economic activity in the sector, favouring the competitiveness of Spanish operators and manufacturers. Among the new features, the changes and regulations within EASA operations, the creation of a new UAS zoning, the development of the regulatory framework for U-Space, and the application of the legal regime to non-EASA operations stand out.”

Since the European regulations came into force in 2022, AESA has issued a total of 221,340 training certificates to carry out UAS operations. With this, at least 117,909 pilots have received the most basic training for UAS operations (open category A1/A3), 21,876 pilots received it in 2024. “One of the most important points in the new features of RD 517/2024 in this area is the training of UAS radio operators, who must have a theoretical certificate, issued by AESA, and a practical certificate, issued by an examiner authorized by AESA,” said AESA. “Since the entry into force of this regulation, AESA has issued 584 theoretical certificates for UAS radio operators.

“On the other hand, since January 1, 2024, the European standard scenarios (STS-EU) came into force, which currently coexist with the national standard scenarios (STE-ES) until the end of their application on December 31, 2025. Since its entry into force, AESA has issued 1,134 STS-EU certificates, having registered 80 recognized entities for this purpose.”

“This year, AESA has issued the first authorisation for operations with up to 1,000 swarming drones for national territory, an example of the advances in cutting-edge innovation of the Spanish UAS sector, which allows progress in the diversification of commercial drone services. Currently, UMILES Group and Flock Drone Art are the two Spanish operators that hold this authorisation.

“In addition, the Agency has issued the first Light UAS Operator Certificate (LUC) to CATUAV, a success story that allows this operator to assess the risks of its operation and authorize its activity, thus reducing paperwork by allowing its operations immediately.

“AESA also published a new rapid risk assessment specific to phytosanitary operations (PDRA-01-F) with UAS of up to 3 metres, adapted to aerial spraying and dispersion of agricultural/forestry products. Since the publication of this PDRA 01-F, the Agency has processed 160 agricultural applications , authorising 120 of them with this new procedure. This fact is a good example of AESA’s work to streamline administrative procedures in the sector, also contributing to the application of UAS technology to other sectors.

“Another milestone to highlight in 2024 has been the first authorisations issued by AESA to carry out aeromodelling operations above 120 metres in height . With this, the Royal Spanish Aeromodelling Federation and the Spanish Aeromodelling Association have been allowed to carry out operations up to 300 metres, or in some cases, up to 500 metres, in their different associated clubs.

“Lastly, last December, AESA defined two new national standard scenarios specific to non-EASA activities, to adapt the needs of this type of operations, such as police, customs, surveillance or search and rescue, to the new regulation, RD 517/2024.

17 Jan 25. Cuashub.com said today that DJI removes geofencing, allowing operators to enter restricted airspace. Less than a week after a DJI drone collision grounded a firefighting plane battling the Los Angeles wildfires, the Chinese drone manufacturer announced it would discontinue geofencing restricted areas, including natural disaster zones, military bases, airports and landmarks like the White House. Previously, DJI’s software automatically prevented drones from entering restricted airspace by halting their movement near geofenced boundaries. With the new update, the company will instead use Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) data to label such zones as “Enhanced Warning Zones.”

Operators will receive in-app alerts about restricted airspace but retain the ability to ignore the warnings. The change, delivered via a software update, allows users to deactivate geofencing by updating the “FlySafe” feature in the DJI app.

In a blog post, DJI stated the policy change aims to place “control back in the hands of the drone operators, in line with regulatory principles of the operator bearing final responsibility.” The FAA has confirmed that geofencing is not legally required for drones and highlighted that Remote ID technology, which tracks drone locations, has been mandatory since March 2024. However, drones weighing less than 0.55 pounds are exempt from this requirement.

Critics, including Brendan Schulman, DJI’s former Vice President of Policy and Legal Affairs, raised concerns about the potential safety implications of removing geofencing. Schulman posted on X:

“Interesting timing: Ten years almost to the day after a DJI drone infamously crash-lands on the White House lawn, DJI has removed the built-in geofencing feature that automatically impedes such an incident, replacing it with warnings that the user can choose to ignore.”

Schulman added: “There was substantial evidence over the years that automatic drone geofencing, implemented using a risk-based approach, contributed significantly to aviation safety.”

The change also appears to have left some gaps with regard to restricted flight zones in the DJI Fly app, with one user sharing his observations on X:

“My only response to the community note is that DJI’s official DJI Fly app says that my drone can take off right now from Runway 27L at Philadelphia International Airport.”

This will require a level of education from drone operators in the U.S. to avoid unnecessary incursions into restricted airspace. This is something authorities are pushing for, but does not seem to be present just yet

The timing of DJI’s announcement coincides with increased scrutiny of the company in the U.S. Last year, the U.S. government added DJI to a list of Chinese military companies, prompting the company to file a lawsuit against the Department of Defense, alleging harassment and stigmatization. In response, DJI has highlighted its contributions to sectors like public safety and agriculture through a series of blog posts.

The removal of geofencing raises questions about the responsibility of drone operators. The FAA has reiterated that flying drones in restricted airspace or during emergencies, such as firefighting operations, is a federal crime. Over the past 15 months, U.S. Navy forces in the Red Sea have confronted more than 400 aerial threats from Iran-backed Houthi forces, including drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. The extent of this campaign, disclosed by Vice Adm. Brendan McLane, head of Naval Surface Forces, during the Surface Navy Association conference, gives insight into the rate at which surface-to-air munitions are depleting. The U.S. Central Command’s involvement in the region has been marked by increased use of counter-UAS measures. Of the munitions expended, the Navy deployed a range of interceptors and weapons systems as part of layered defenses against aerial threats.

These included:

  • SM-2 and SM-6 missiles: Versatile surface-to-air interceptors capable of engaging high-altitude threats.
  • Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles: Designed for close-to-medium range aerial defense.
  • Five-inch guns aboard destroyers and cruisers: Traditionally used for surface and shore targets but increasingly applied in air defense roles.

Vice Adm. McLane highlighted the USS Spruance, which intercepted multiple threats during its recent deployment with the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group. The Spruance alone engaged three anti-ship ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles and seven drones. McLane described the coordination and decision-making occurring in the ship’s Combat Information Center as unprecedented, testing personnel in ways not previously seen.

The surge in the Navy’s use of counter-UAS defenses stems from Houthi actions starting in October 2023, which have targeted commercial and military vessels transiting the Red Sea. These attacks are part of the Houthis’ stated support for Palestinian militant group Hamas. Navy leaders emphasized the importance of analytical and collaborative advances across operational communities, which they believe will enhance preparedness for future conflicts.

However, the high rate of munitions expenditure has sparked concerns among military leaders about strained stockpiles. These resources are seen as vital for potential engagements in the Pacific. Congress has been approached for additional funding to replenish these depleted stocks.

Argentinian President Javier Milei has signed Decree 21/2025, authorizing the classified acquisition of an anti-drone system to counter the rising threats posed by UAS. This initiative aims to address concerns such as terrorism, smuggling and criminal activities involving drones.

The decree, published on January 13, empowers the Ministry of Security to oversee the acquisition under the authority granted by the National Security Law and related regulations. Minister Patricia Bullrich emphasized the urgency of this measure, stating that drones have become a significant risk due to their accessibility, range and ease of use.

“Drones have been employed for activities ranging from smuggling contraband into prisons to attempts at terrorism. Enhancing our technical capacity to neutralize such threats is paramount,” the Ministry of Security noted.

This decision aligns with global trends, with many nations increasingly looking to advancing their anti-drone capabilities to counter illicit activities. In the UK and Spain, drones have been used for drug smuggling and monitoring law enforcement, showcasing the diverse challenges posed by UAS misuse.

The anti-drone systems to be acquired will include technologies to detect, track and neutralize unauthorized drones. These may involve radiofrequency jammers, radar systems and optical sensors. The Ministry highlighted that classifying the procurement process is critical to ensuring the effectiveness of the systems, preventing adversaries from identifying or countering the technology.

17 Jan 25. Cuashub.com said today that the FBI seeks drone pilot after collision grounds firefighting aircraft. The FBI and FAA are investigating a collision between an unauthorized drone and a firefighting “Super Scooper” aircraft battling the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles County last week. The crash, which occurred Thursday afternoon, caused significant damage to the plane, grounding it for several days while firefighters struggled to contain multiple infernos across the region.

The aircraft, known as “Quebec 1,” was conducting fire suppression operations near Malibu, California, when it struck a civilian drone flying illegally within FAA-restricted airspace. The collision left a 3-by-6-inch hole in the plane’s wing.

“We hit a drone this afternoon – first one,” said L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone. “Our Super Scooper hit a small drone. It put a hole in the wing, and it’s grounded now.”

Despite the damage, the pilot landed the aircraft safely. The Super Scooper, leased from Canada to assist in battling wildfires, was repaired and is awaiting FAA approval to return to service.

FBI and FAA response

The FBI has launched a tip line to identify the drone operator, emphasizing the seriousness of the violation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reiterated that drone incursions near wildfires are a federal crime punishable by up to 12 months in prison and a $75,000 fine.

“The FAA treats these violations seriously and immediately considers swift enforcement action for these offenses,” the agency said.

The Palisades Fire, which erupted on January 7, has seen widespread drone interference, forcing authorities to halt aerial operations on multiple occasions. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna reported that three people have been arrested in connection with two drone-related incidents over the fires.

Since the wildfires began, at least 40 unauthorized drone flights have been reported, and 48 privately owned drones have been detected over restricted areas, according to fire officials.

“Flying a drone near a wildfire is dangerous and can cost lives,” the FAA warned. “When people fly drones near wildfires, fire response agencies often ground their aircraft to avoid the potential for a midair collision. Delaying airborne response poses a threat to firefighters on the ground, residents and property in nearby communities, and it can allow wildfires to grow larger.”

The Palisades Fire has burned thousands of acres and destroyed numerous homes. Drones have become a significant hazard, with some operators using them to capture dramatic images of the devastation despite FAA flight restrictions.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to respect FAA flight restrictions and report unauthorized drone activity to prevent further disruptions to critical firefighting operations.
