09 Jan 25. Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) today unveiled the V200, a body camera designed specifically to help protect frontline workers in stores, hospitals, hotels, schools and stadiums. Workers in these settings regularly face safety concerns – from unwelcome behavior to theft and medical emergencies – and the V200, with its GoLive Audio safety feature, offers a direct connection to help.

The V200 body camera is a discreet, lightweight addition to a worker’s uniform. The recording feature can be activated with the push of a button to document a situation, which also serves as an effective deterrent for unwanted behavior. In more serious scenarios, such as medical incidents or crime, activation of the GoLive Audio feature can engage security personnel or a supervisor, who can access live video and audio and interject via the camera’s speaker. This kind of immediate intervention allows the frontline worker to focus on the situation while directly getting support.

As a leading provider of enterprise security technology solutions, Motorola Solutions explored worker sentiment related to body cameras in its 2024 report on retail worker safety. It found that more than a quarter of workers have considered quitting their jobs due to safety concerns, about half of workers think body cameras could make them feel safer and the majority believe body camera recordings could aid in investigations. In the U.K., where body cameras are more widely adopted, 70% said body cameras are effective in de-escalating dangerous situations.

10 Jan 25. The sensor solutions provider HENSOLDT has been awarded a contract by the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative (DLR QCI) for the QUA-SAR research project. The research project aims to optimise complex radar remote sensing scenarios. In the research project, HENSOLDT is working together with the Microwaves and Radar Institute of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the high-tech start-up Tensor AI Solutions GmbH. The DLR Quantum Computing Initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. Radar remote sensing uses radio waves to collect data about objects or terrain from a distance. Since conditions on the battlefield change in ever shorter cycles, time is an important factor. Radar systems of the future will be multi-platform and multi-sensor networks that must be operational in highly dynamic environments. The best possible distribution of tasks among sensors and sensor networks is becoming a problem that cannot be solved in real time with conventional computers. Quantum computers promise to be able to solve this challenge in the future, which would provide a decisive advantage in the area of radar resource management. By participating in QUA-SAR, HENSOLDT is complementing its ‘Quantum Sensing and Technologies’ technology field, which has existed since the beginning of 2024 and is developing HENSOLDT’s technological orientation in the field of quantum technologies.

09 Jan 25. TSA Launches New Era of Drone Watch at San Francisco International. For the first time in history, TSA used an agency-owned, small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) to test the threat of drones over San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

This achievement was thanks to the efforts of TSA’s Law Enforcement/Federal Air Marshal Service (LE/FAMS) UAS Assessments Unit, which was established to oversee the agency’s role in protecting the U.S. Transportation Systems Sector from nefarious drone use.

“In our mission to protect the nation’s transportation systems, TSA faces a range of growing challenges associated with the threat posed by UAS,” said Acting Supervisory Air Marshal in Charge Ty Fletcher. “Incidents including the December 2018 airspace incursion at Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom and the more recent disruption at San Juan International Airport in January 2024 highlight the severe disruptions UAS can have on aviation and flight operations.”

Assistant Supervisory Air Marshal in Charge Jason Goff said this was TSA’s first opportunity to launch its Skydio X10 drone to assess the UAS climate at SFO.

“sUAS supports UAS assessments by providing photographic evidence of line-of-sight and possible attack trajectories from altitude,” explained Goff. “Assessments like this allow us to demonstrate the capabilities of sUAS by conducting elevated (or aerial) observations of airport operations. They also help us verify viable locations for a possible attack.”

When flying, a Skydio X10 weighs about 5 1/2 pounds, is 31.1 inches long, 25.6 inches wide and 5.7 inches high.

Fletcher said TSA partners with other federal, state, local, territorial and tribal agencies as well as the aviation industry on UAS response policies and procedures.

“Given that a UAS incident can develop very quickly with little warning, the best course of action is to locate the operator and end the disruption,” Fletcher noted. “To do that, it is critical to preidentify likely UAS probable launch sites so airport stakeholders can notify law enforcement if no technical solutions are available.”

He said using unmanned aircraft systems also helps create outreach opportunities for LE/FAMS and determines how communities respond to reporting drone use.

“During the SFO assessment, San Francisco Recreation and Parks employees informed us that UAS operations were not authorized in city parks,” added Fletcher. “These encounters affect the scoring of potential launch sites, as they demonstrate that people are aware of possible issues of drones operating near airports.”

Fletcher said operators of low-cost, highly accessible, off-the-shelf commercial drones may intentionally or unintentionally harm the transportation system, particularly airports.

“UAS also pose a potential threat to surface and other transportation systems,” shared Fletcher. “Surface transportation presents a particularly challenging environment to detect and mitigate UAS. The sprawling nature of railroad rights-of-way, highways, pipelines and the rail transport industry makes oversight challenging.”

Serge Potapov, executive director of the LE/FAMS Flight Programs Branch, said the Skydio X10s are U.S.-made and cyber-hardened sUAS authorized for use through the DHS Blue UAS Program, which the U.S. Department of Defense created to identify and approve drones for government use.

“Launching our inaugural sUAS mission, we are taking an important step toward revolutionizing the tools available to protect the traveling public,” said Potapov. “These cutting-edge capabilities enable us to enhance situational awareness, respond more effectively to evolving threats and uphold TSA’s commitment to safety and security.

07 Jan 25. US Navy Awards $3.5bn Contract to NGC to Develop Successor to E-6B Mercury Aircraft. The U.S. Navy announced today that it has awarded Northrop Grumman Corp. a $3.5bn contract to conduct the mission-systems integration for the E-130J, which will be the successor to the E-6B Mercury for the Take Charge and Move Out (TACAMO) mission. Under the contract, Northrop Grumman of Melbourne, Florida, will serve as the prime contractor to integrate TACAMO mission systems, including the Collins Aerospace Very Low Frequency system, into government-furnished C-130J-30 air vehicles built by Lockheed Martin Corp. The contract is for three Engineering Development Models (EDMs) and options for up to three System Demonstration Test Articles (SDTAs) and up to six aircraft in the first lot of production. Collins Aerospace and Lockheed Martin are directed subcontractors to support the integration and airworthiness.

“Our TACAMO mission is foundational to our nation’s nuclear Triad,” said Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro. “The E-130J will carry on the proud legacy of Navy TACAMO aircraft and keep our nation safe.”

The acquisition effort is being led by the Navy’s Airborne Strategic Command, Control and Communications Program Office (PMA-271) within the Program Executive Office for Air Anti-Submarine Warfare, Assault and Special Mission Programs (PEO(A)).

“Today is a tremendous day for the future of naval aviation’s contribution to our nation’s nuclear deterrence mission,” said Capt. Adam Scott, PMA-271 program manager. “With the selection of Northrop Grumman as the prime contractor for the TACAMO Recapitalization Program, we are ready to move out with developing this critical asset. In carrying on the legacy of the E-6B Mercury, the E-130J will ensure our nation’s leadership is always connected to its nuclear forces for decades to come.”

Work developing this asset in conjunction with the prime contractor begins today.

The contract award is the result of a competitive source selection that included significant engagement with industry. PMA-271 released the request for proposals on sam.gov on Sept. 21, 2023, with proposals due by April 22, 2024.

The Navy selected the winner based on the proposal that offered the best value to the government, considering the offeror’s technical approach and cost. The total contract value is $3,459,276,000.

The E-130J is a critical part of the United States’ nuclear modernization program, which includes new Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines, new bomber aircraft such as the B-21 Raider, and Sentinel, a new ground-based system to replace the silo-based Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles. The E-130J will ensure that leadership can always communicate with those nuclear forces to order or cancel strikes, even if ground-based communications are unavailable.

The E-6B is a communications relay and strategic airborne command post aircraft. It provides survivable, reliable, and endurable airborne nuclear command, control and communications (NC3) for the president, secretary of defense and U.S. Strategic Command. It is a dual-mission aircraft capable of fulfilling the no-fail TACAMO mission and the Looking Glass mission, which facilitates the launch of U.S. land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles using an airborne launch control system. The E-130J will relieve the E-6B of the TACAMO mission.

03 Jan 25. Yellow Sands C-UAS training event focuses on integration with coalition partners. Airmen from the 378th Air Expeditionary Wing, United States Air Forces Central, has joined with host nation partners to conduct Exercise Yellow Sands, a regional training event designed to strengthen multinational integration in Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) and Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD). The series of exercises focuses on detecting, tracking, and neutralising aerial threats utilising the E-11A aircraft, equipped with its Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN).

The Yellow Sands exercise series is part of US Air Forces Central’s Combined Integrated Air and Missile Defense programme, which focuses on the collective defense of the Arabian Peninsula. The exercise evaluates Joint Regional Air Chief member nations’ ability to integrate with coalition partners, engaging regional allies critical to the US Central Command area of responsibility. The E-11A plays a vital role in achieving the exercise’s objectives by serving as a communications bridge, seamlessly connecting the diverse systems used by coalition partners.

“The E-11A is a Bombardier aircraft outfitted with the BACN.” said US Air Force Maj. Giovanni Allevato, 430th Expeditionary Electronic Combat Squadron E-11A elevator pilot. “This payload enables communication relay through the bridging of voice and data system gateways, allowing for real-time and a seamlessly transparent intraoperative flow of communication for warfighters.”

Connecting dissimilar communication networks enhances real-time information sharing, facilitating seamless communication across voice and data networks. The E-11A is participating in the exercise specifically to bridge diverse systems and unite US forces with regional partners.

Allevato said the BACN ‘payload’ has also been placed on other assets.

03 Jan 25. Frontex launches C-UAS prize contest to secure European borders against rogue drones. In collaboration with national European Border and Coast Guard (EBCG) authorities and supported by a host member state, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. Frontex is organising a counter-uncrewed aerial systems solutions prize contest.  The contest seeks to stimulate the development of innovative, effective, and efficient solutions to counter unauthorised UAS activities such as illicit surveillance or smuggling across EU borders. It is in alignment with the Technical and Operational Strategy for European Integrated Border Management 2023-2027, which focuses on future-proofing external borders through innovative technological integration, situational awareness, and operational excellence. Frontex says unauthorised UAS activities “pose significant challenges to border security, including hostile surveillance, smuggling, and other illicit operations”. The contest will demonstrate innovative C-UAS capabilities (UAS detection, tracking, identification and neutralisation) and associated procedures relevant for border management with a focus on the neutralisation / mitigation components of the C-UAS solution. It will identify and assess systems in a simulated operational environment, and result in practical operational systems to be deployed and used by the EBCG community to strengthen border security.

The contest is structured in two phases: Phase 1 covers the submission and evaluation of C-UAS technical proposals. Once the applications meet the eligibility, exclusion and admissibility criteria, they will go through the technical evaluation process. The top five applicants will be selected in June 2025 based on the merit of their technical proposals and will each receive a prize of EUR 20k. The systems should be feasible for deployment and operations in phase 2, if selected in phase 1. Phase 2 includes live operational trials in October 2025 in a simulated border environment at a designated test site in Europe. The top five finalists from Phase 1 will be invited to participate as contestants in these trials over a period of 3–4 weeks. The solutions will be ranked based on the performances against the Phase 2 Prize award criteria. The prizes are EUR 270k, 220k, 170k and two prizes of 100k.  The final winner is expected to be announced in November 2025.

Systems must be capable of detecting, tracking, identifying, as well as neutralising off-the-shelf and custom-made UAS, including those equipped with advanced counter-countermeasures. Proposed solutions must be able to be safely used in a border environment by border management authorities, either in a remote border area or in a populated area with considerations of local critical infrastructure.

Submissions are invited by March 17, 2025. The contest is open to all legal entities registered in EU Member States, Schengen-associated countries, and EEA countries. Joint applications are welcome, with a lead applicant coordinating submissions. (Source: www.unmannedairspace.info)

 

06 Jan 25. SRC announces Japanese certification and deployment of air surveillance radar. SRC, Inc. has announced the first deployment of its Gryphon R1410 radar system in Japan, in partnership with Nippon Kaiyo Co., Ltd. The radar recently passed certification by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, which SRC says makes it the first counter-uncrewed aerial system (C-UAS) radar of its kind to receive official approval in the country. The Gryphon R1410 is a 3D active electronically scanned array radar designed for air surveillance and multi-mission capabilities, with a focus on detecting small, low-altitude targets within a 10-kilometre range. The system is capable of operating in harsh weather conditions and supporting both static and mobile applications. It includes intuitive interface software that aims to simplify configuration. MITRE: “The US must increase resources to defend crowded places against UAS threats.” There is a lack of resources in the United States to effectively safeguard soft targets and crowded places against uncrewed aerial system (UAS) threats, says a new report from MITRE’s Center for Data-Driven Policy. MITRE analysed existing UAS threat-response mechanisms, countermeasures, and policies and authorities to identify barriers to conducting effective counter-UAS (C-UAS) protection and developed recommendations that address the challenges and opportunities identified.

“Technological advancements in areas such as imaging, construction, composition, speed, autonomy, and artificial intelligence, coupled with higher UAS proliferation due to factors such as increased affordability, private and public sector uses, 3-D printing, and do-it-yourself kits, make UAS more attractive as potential threat vectors for nefarious actors,” MITRE states.

The report notes that UAS threats “may include deploying dangerous chemical, biological, or other substances over crowds or using the physical device to cause harm” and calls for nationwide training and funding for federal and state personnel as well as the necessary equipment to defend against these threats.

MITRE also says there are opportunities in UAS Traffic Management (UTM) for federal security partners to “invest in, improve, and enforce the use of UAS Remote Identification, as well as to closely collaborate with safety partners to develop and deploy UTM solutions”.

The report suggests that the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice (DOJ) should lead an effort to identify, assess, and prioritise locations in the country to receive C-UAS protection. “Locations may be selected based on factors such as population density, infrastructure, national or homeland security criticality, economic or financial value, aviation nexuses, and current levels of UAS activity.”

Other recommendations include developing data and information exchange standards for C-UAS systems, increasing legislative authorities and DOJ working with the Federal Aviation Administration to enact stronger penalties. For more information: mitre.org (Source: www.unmannedairspace.info)

07 Jan 25. Cuashub.com said today that FAA expands New Jersey drone flight restrictions. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has broadened its temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) to encompass parts of nine additional municipalities in New Jersey, citing continued concerns over unexplained drone activity. These new measures, issued Monday, follow similar restrictions enacted earlier in December and will remain in place until January 19.

The newly affected areas include:

* Gloucester County: Paulsboro, Westville

* Hudson County: South Kearny

* Middlesex County: Port Reading

* Monmouth County: Atlantic Highlands, Belford, Fort Hancock, Highlands

* Union County: Linden

These restrictions prohibit unmanned aircraft operations below 400 feet within one nautical mile of the designated airspace in each of these towns. Certain exceptions exist for first responders and specific commercial drone operations authorized by the FAA.

The FAA’s expanded restrictions come amidst heightened public concern and widespread reports of unidentified drone sightings throughout New Jersey and neighboring states. Federal authorities have emphasized that there is no evidence of a direct threat to public safety. However, the surge in reports – with more than 5,000 submissions reviewed by the FBI – has raised questions about the nature and origins of the drones.

According to federal officials, most sightings have been attributed to misidentifications, such as airplanes, other manned aircraft, authorized drones or even stars. Around 2 percent of the reports have warranted further investigation, however.

Among the newly restricted areas are sites near sensitive infrastructure, such as Naval Weapons Station Earle’s nearly three-mile pier along Sandy Hook Bay. This location reported two unauthorized drone incursions earlier in December, which likely influenced the decision to extend restrictions to nearby towns, including Fort Hancock and Highlands.

Public response

The FAA’s actions have drawn mixed reactions from local officials and residents. A recent poll by CBS News revealed that 78 percent of Americans believe the government is withholding information about drone activity, while 53 percent perceive drones as a potential threat to national security. These figures reflect growing unease and a demand for greater transparency from federal agencies.

Efforts to address these concerns have included an FBI-led investigation and interagency collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security. However, both agencies have largely referred inquiries back to the FAA, leaving many questions unanswered.

The wave of restrictions highlights the challenges of balancing national security with the increasing use of drones for recreational and commercial purposes. As the FAA continues to navigate these complex regulatory challenges, drone operators have been urged to stay informed about the latest TFRs and adhere to regulations to avoid penalties.
