22 Aug 24. SNC wins Army contract for HADES spy plane. An Army official previously told Breaking Defense that a baseline HADES configuration will include moving target indication, high-end signals intelligence and other capabilities.
Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has won a high-flying Army contract to convert a business jet into a deep-sensing spy plane, beating out an industry team up featuring L3Harris, Leidos and MAG Aerospace, the service announced today.
Under the High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System (HADES) program, SNC will now be charged with integrating sensing technologies aboard the Bombardier Global 6500 business jet for airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions as the service phases out a legacy fleet of turboprop aircraft.
“HADES is the centerpiece of the Army’s long-promised aerial ISR transformation strategy,” Lt. Gen. Anthony Hale, Deputy Chief of Staff for intelligence, or G-2, said in a press release today. “HADES allows the Army to fly higher, faster and farther, which directly impacts our ability to see and sense deeper, delivering an organic capability in line with the Secretary of the Army’s number-one operational imperative – deep sensing.”
“A couple years ago, we made a critical decision to really invest and put skin in the game in terms of this program, and to buy completely, 100 percent into the Army’s vision of what they wanted to achieve. And that alignment ultimately led to where we are today with the award of HADES,” Tim Owings, SNC executive vice president for the company’s mission solutions and technologies division, told Breaking Defense in an interview today. “So we couldn’t be happier with the decision, and we believe the Army made a great choice.”
The HADES award notches another big win for SNC after the company’s successful bid for the Air Force’s Survivable Airborne Operations Center program, a multibillion-dollar effort that is militarizing Boeing 747 jumbo jets to become the service’s next “Doomsday plane.” SNC’s wins reflect not only the company’s strengths, Owings said, but also a “willingness” by the Pentagon to look beyond top-tier defense primes to mid-size, privately-held firms like SNC as well as non-traditional sources.
SNC will largely carry out HADES work at the company’s facilities in Hagerstown, Md., where the firm is also building its HADES-related RAPCON-X offering. Under the effort known as ATHENA-S, SNC was awarded a contract to convert two Bombardier Global 6500s into “ISR-as-a-service” platforms. MAG Aerospace and L3Harris separately won a contract to convert two other Global 6500s for the ATHENA-R effort. Josh Walsh, SNC vice president of mission solutions and operations, stated that SNC plans to reuse “about 90 percent” of the ATHENA-S engineering package for the HADES offering.
According to the Army, the HADES award initially provides $93.5m, but has a ceiling of $991.3m over the course of a 12-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract. The service announced earlier this year that it had contracted with Bombardier for one Global 6500 to serve as a prototype, with an option for two more jets over a three-year period. The program was recently approved as a middle tier of acquisition effort for rapid prototyping.
The Army eventually plans to field a fleet of 14 HADES aircraft, according to Aviation Week. Owings added that the program could generate foreign military sales in theaters like Europe or the Indo-Pacific.
Andrew Evans, the director of the Army’s ISR Task Force, recently told Breaking Defense that once the new integration contract goes out, the first plane should be operational around 12-18 months later. Evans said initial packages for the aircraft’s baseline configuration include moving target indication, high-end signals intelligence and other capabilities. The Army is also interested in adding hardpoints to the wings of the aircraft to mount additional features.
While other services like the Air Force are seeking to shift tasks like ISR to space or even drones, Evans emphasized that unmanned platforms have their own pitfalls, like being susceptible to jamming, while space-based platforms can be expensive.
“So we have to balance all of those things — endurance trade offs, payload trade offs — with link dependencies. And so we determined inside the Army that we need a mix of assets, right? We can’t be all manned. We cannot be all unmanned. We need the value and benefit of both systems,” he said. (Source: Breaking Defense.com)

This includes developing systems that can seamlessly integrate with existing border security infrastructure, ensuring that they can be deployed rapidly and without disrupting legitimate operations. By opening the LRBAA to industry and academia, DHS is aiming to tap into a wider range of C-UAS expertise and innovation. The goal is to create advanced C-UAS solutions that can enhance border security, adapting to the evolving aerial threat landscape. This initiative reflects DHS’s commitment to staying ahead of emerging challenges and maintaining a robust defence against unauthorised drone activity along the U.S. borders.
The LRBAA program manager, Dusty Lang, highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that the process is designed to allow innovators to gauge DHS’s interest early on, thereby reducing the effort and expense of developing full proposals. Benelli, the Italian firearms manufacturer, has introduced the M4 Advanced Impact Drone Guardian, a new weapon designed for short-range drone defence. Based on the M4 semi-automatic shotgun platform, the Drone Guardian is specifically configured to neutralise UAS using 6.1 mm buckshot, commonly known as No. 4 buckshot. The weapon is intended to be a cost-effective, user-friendly solution for defending against low-flying drones at distances up to 50 meters.
The rise in drone usage in military conflicts, particularly for reconnaissance and armed missions, has highlighted the need for accessible countermeasures. Benelli’s new offering aims to address this need by providing a straightforward, reliable option for dismounted forces and asset protection.
The M4 Advanced Impact Drone Guardian is categorised as a personal defence weapon, with a role similar to that of the HK MP7, but specifically designed to counter UAS.
The M4 platform
The M4 platform, developed over 20 years ago, has gained widespread adoption by military and law enforcement agencies due to its durability and effectiveness. The short-stroke gas piston system with an auto-regulating gas system has made the M4 a versatile tool, now repurposed for anti-drone operations. The 12-gauge M4 has already seen use in drone defence, including by the Belgian armed forces and Ukrainian forces on the front lines.
Benelli reports that the Drone Guardian has an effective combat range of 50 meters, with a potential maximum range of up to 100 meters. The weapon’s modified choke allows the buckshot to maintain velocity and impact power at these distances. The shotgun is equipped with a front sight and an aperture sight mounted on a full-length MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail.
Drone Guardian capabilities
Users can also opt for a Steiner MPS red dot sight. Two barrel lengths are available, an 18.5-inch version for dismounted personnel and a 26-inch version intended for asset protection, which also makes it suitable for law enforcement use.
Kinetic weapons like shotguns offer an advantage in drone defence, particularly against drones that are resistant to electronic jamming or operate autonomously. However, the short reaction time and the challenges of detecting and tracking small drones remain significant obstacles. Despite these limitations, shotguns have proven to be a valuable component of short-range drone defence strategies, as seen in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The versatility of the 12-gauge shotgun, widely used across military units for various tasks including breaching and neutralising threats, has led to its adaptation for anti-drone efforts. Several countries, including Belgium and France, have experimented with using standard-issue shotguns in this role, adding another layer to their existing defence capabilities against UAVs.

16 Aug 24. Thor’s Hammer 2024 C-UAS exercise ‘yielded critical changes to operational aspects.’ The United States Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) has published details of the biennial North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military exercise it hosted in May and June.
The 2024 Thor’s Hammer NATO exercise was an electronic warfare (EW) event testing compatibility and effectiveness of Counter-Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Devices (C-RCIED) and Counter-Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-sUAS). This is the first time the United States has hosted Thor’s Hammer, which began in 2015 and has been held in Norway, Sweden, and Australia. Since the inception of Thor’s Hammer in 2015, the event has grown from five participating nations to 14 in 2024, when the event hosted more than 200 personnel.
The two main testing sites for Thor’s Hammer 2024 were Camp Atterbury and Muscatatuck Urban Training Center. Camp Atterbury supported test events to improve effectiveness and compatibility against small UAS and IED threats. Muscatatuck Urban Training Center provided simultaneous UAS and IED testing in an urban environment that enhanced collaboration among partner nations and a better understanding of how to optimise employment of diverse electronic countermeasures (ECM) systems.
Thomas Talbert, an NSWC Crane employee, was the Trial Manager for 2024 Thor’s Hammer. He said the event enabled collaboration. “Thor’s Hammer presents the opportunity to understand how systems will behave when operating together,” said Talbert. “The understanding gained concerning the compatibility and interoperability of the multiple nations’ systems has saved lives and will continue to save lives into the future. The ability to collaborate with other engineers, scientists, and operators allows for the improvement of each countries’ ECM systems performance.”
Thor’s Hammer systems were tested alongside each other to identify collaborative opportunities to improve performance of systems in coalition environments. In a battlefield increasingly more defined by electronic warfare, ECM de-confliction has become an essential pre-deployment activity.
“Thor’s Hammer allows the participating nations to test in an environment that is not available in their home country, test against different devices, and collaborate in an atmosphere that occurs when personnel understand and trust each other’s skills and abilities,” said Talbert.
NSWC Crane said on August 14 that intensive ongoing collaboration among the Thor’s Hammer participants has yielded critical changes to operational aspects that will further protect deployed forces. Lyndon Theodore “LT” Snider, TH24 Focal Point Lead, emphasised that while the event bolsters security cooperation with partners, the efforts are intended to keep warfighters safe.
“In a time when the criticality of international military cooperation cannot be overstated, Thor’s Hammer 2024 brought participating nations together to sharpen coalition capabilities in ground electronic warfare,” said Snider. “The event exemplified the cooperative spirit of partner nations who share the common goal of ensuring success on the battlefield and the survivability of troops and equipment.”

16 Aug 24. Russian C-UAS tech ‘captured by Ukrainian military.’ Ukrainian military forces have reportedly captured a Russian electronic warfare system in the Kursk region, complete with documentation detailing how it operates.
As Unmanned Airspace previously reported, the Volnorez (which translates in English as Breakwater) counter-uncrewed aerial system (C-UAS) technology was first seen in public at the Russian Army Expo 2023, and later mounted on T-80BVM main battle tanks in Ukraine, according to social media reports circulating in mid-September.
Volnorez spans the frequency range from 900-2,000MHz and is able to disrupt drone signals from ranges in excess of one kilometre, providing the jammer-equipped vehicle (and its immediate neighbours) with enhanced levels of protection in an increasingly intense conflict. The jammers – which are magnetically attached to the host vehicle, thus increasing operational agility-are omnidirectional, thereby providing 360° coverage.
According to Ukrainian news site Militarnyi, the captured C-UAS system was still in its factory packaging when found.

The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has chosen products from MyDefence, a technological leader in counter-drone equipment, to accelerate access to critical drone detection technology for NATO member nations. The agreement marks a historic milestone in military procurement and enhances NATO’s operational readiness. The historic procurement agreement, signed between COBBS BELUX, a company specializing in marketing and selling defence and military equipment to NATO armed services, and the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), is the first in NATO’s 75-year history. It allows COBBS BELUX to distribute products to NATO member nations. In the agreement, COBBS BELUX and NSPA selected the Wingman drone detectors from MyDefence for this 3-year framework agreement with the option to renew the framework.

The critical role of drone technology in modern warfare
A 2023 report cited by Russian state media claimed that 3,500 FPV drone operators had been trained by the Russian Ministry of Defense. Furthermore, it appears that 1,700 more operators are undergoing training to operate various other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Russia is believed to produce tens of thousands of FPV drones per month, which suggests that the number of UAVs being used in combat is increasing[1]. Effective countermeasures are, therefore, more important than ever.
The new procurement framework allows NATO member nations to acquire MyDefence’s radio-frequency technology for drone detection to help armed forces counter the extensive use of UAVs in conflicts.
