10 Dec 13. As Xantrex wraps up 2013 on a high note following its integration into $36bn conglomerate Schneider Electric, company officials announce additional investment in product development for 2014 and beyond, crossing all lines of business while expanding its global footprint. Poised for significant growth over the next two years, Gaudet reports that the company plans to launch multiple new products in 120V and 230V power outputs in the marine, truck, RV, EMS, military and work vehicle segments it serves. Xantrex is implementing a new regional-based sales approach to be closer to our end customer; to further enhance relationships and to add more value with partners at all levels. It also will introduce a new aftermarket merchandising program to support in-store sales of its recreational-based products and educate consumers. It continues to expand its end-user-focused educational initiatives including the popular Tech Doctor print and video editorial series which is featured on its website, and reproduced by media organizations throughout North America.

04 Dec 13. ATK announced that its Planar Unfolding Modular Array (PUMA) solar arrays were successfully deployed on Orbital Science’s SES-8 satellite, which launched last night and will carry communications for SES S.A. of Luxembourg. This marks the 90th successful on-orbit deployment of an ATK solar array wing. The PUMA solar array used on SES-8 is based on the same mechanical and electrical design used to power all of Orbital’s Star 2 satellite family, of which more than 23 satellites are currently operating in geostationary Earth orbit (GEO). Besides the company’s heritage PUMA solar arrays for GEO, ATK has flown multiple array designs that have powered missions for science, exploration and defense, including missions to Mars. ATK’s innovative solar array design line includes UltraFlexTM, selected by Orbital for the enhanced Cygnus resupply services vehicle, plus past and future Mars missions and the Orion multi-purpose crew vehicle. In addition, ATK’s much larger MegaFlexTM solar array is designed specifically to meet the anticipated power demands of 350kW and higher, with very low mass and small stowed volume for future space exploration using solar electric propulsion. 11 Dec 13. Congressional budget cuts have forced the Army to scale back its efforts to become more energy efficient and generate more renewable energy, a top Army official said. Richard Kidd, the Army’s deputy assistant secretary for energy and sustainability, said Nov. 20 at a panel discussion in Arlington, Va., that the Army had to cancel $250m in energy projects in fiscal 2013 because of budget cuts. He said the Army has also had to slow down its replacement of aging coal-fired boilers and plants because of a lack of funding. But he said one of the most pressing issues is that sequestration has cut into the Army’s ability to maintain and repair its equipment and facilities — and those facilities will become less efficient over time and cost more money to maintain.“Ex
