17 Jan 13. BAE Systems has, successfully completed the Power Operational Concept Demonstration (PowerOCD) at the British Army Training Unit in Kenya under a £1.5m contract from the DE&S Technology Delivery Team. The trial demonstrated up to 30% fuel and maintenance cost savings can be achieved at a forward base using existing defence generators and savings can also be made at a main base using commercial generators. At the heart of the demonstration is the Deployed Energy Management System (DEMS), which has been designed and developed by BAE Systems; it is an innovative plug-and-go solution that has been proven at a series of trial locations in UK, Cyprus and now Kenya and is proposed for further operational use. Incorporating an energy management system that controls generators, maintains storage and intelligently manages demand to meet operational requirements and energy use patterns; It simply integrates equipment currently in use by the military yet is designed to have the flexibility to accommodate commercial generators and current and future fuel saving technologies such as solar power and wind. The system works by being seamlessly plugged in between the generator and distribution system. The generators charge a battery system controlled by the DEMS console which switches the generator off when the batteries are fully charged. Power on demand can be drawn from the batteries resulting in increased efficiency and fuel and maintenance savings. The benefits to customers using DEMS are great in number. It is simple to use for deployed operators and can be controlled in theatre or remotely from MOD sites in the UK; being desirable for all locations where there is a requirement for power not available from the main grid. It is also highly configurable to enable locations of small operating bases or large operating bases to plug in the necessary components to get the most efficient power solution for any type of deployed operations. Power is distributed in a more efficient way and in conjunction with the generators the system can also use alternative energy such as solar power and wind energy making it a more sustainable option.
