To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what steps her Department is taking to tackle global cyber terrorism.

In November 2016 the Government published a new five year National Cyber Security Strategy, which is supported by £1.9billion of transformational investment which includes a programme of active cyber defence; the creation of the National Cyber Security Centre, and a dedicated ability to counter-attack in cyber space.
The Home Office works closely with both the National Cyber Security Programme and the National Cyber Security Centre to ensure that we have a consistent and joined up understanding of, and approach to the terrorist cyber threat. As set out in the Gracious speech, our counter-terrorism strategy will be reviewed. We will look at our whole counter-terrorism approach across Government, police, local authorities and the security services to ensure they have what they need to protect our country.

Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the plan adopted by NATO following its meeting in Brussels on 25 May; and what will be the contribution of the UK to the measures included in the plan.

In addition to delivering on the commitments made at the Wales and Warsaw Summits in 2014 and 2016 respectively, NATO agreed in May 2017 to do more to contribute to the fight against terrorism, and ensure fairer burden sharing across the Alliance. The UK already meets the Defence Investment Pledge target of spending more than 2% of GDP on Defence and welcomes the commitment of all Allies to include this in their national plans. The UK’s significant contribution to NATO activities includes an enhanced Forward Presence in Estonia and capacity building work in Partner countries to build resilience against threats such as terrorism; the UK fully supports NATO’s membership of the Global Coalition against Daesh.

Her Majesty’s Government what is their assessment of the benefits and costs to the UK of membership of the EU Satellite Centre.

The EU Satellite Centre produces satellite imagery and analysis in support of EU missions and operations in fulfilment of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defence Policy. The UK is able to draw on the Centre’s output for defence and security purposes. This year the UK’s financial contribution is approximately 2.17 million Euros.
