13 Feb 26. Department of War Partners With Department of Energy in Historic Nuclear Energy Initiative. The Department of War (DoW) and the Department of Energy (DoE) are partnering to mark a historic milestone in advancing America’s nuclear energy landscape and strengthening national security. This groundbreaking collaboration with Valar Atomics is directly aligned with President Trump’s Executive Order to reshape and modernize America’s nuclear energy landscape. On Sunday, February 15, 2026, a next-generation nuclear reactor will be transported via C-17 from March Air Reserve Base in California to Hill Air Force Base in Utah. The reactor will then be transported to Utah San Rafael Energy Lab (USREL) in Orangeville, Utah, for testing and evaluation. The successful delivery and installation of this reactor will unlock significant possibilities for the future of energy resilience and strategic independence for our nation’s defense, showcasing an agile, innovative, and commercial-first approach to solving critical infrastructure challenges. 13 Feb 26. DOW Aims to Accelerate Advanced Materials Processing. The Department of War (DOW) announced today the September 17, 2025 investment on a five-year contract totaling nearly $9.2 m to the national advanced materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute, LIFT, to address manufacturing challenges associated with ceramic matrix composites (CMC). This announcement was delayed due to the government shutdown. This effort, funded through the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Policy (OASW(IBP))’s Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) Program, supports White House and Secretary of War priorities in advanced composites manufacturing research and development and defense industrial base workforce development.
“This project aims to disrupt manufacturing affordability through advanced materials and processing technologies,” said Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Policy Michael Cadenazzi. “I believe its location in Detroit, Michigan at LIFT’s new Ceramics Manufacturing Center will help revitalize economic growth and industrial capacity in a state with a rich history in building America’s industrial might.”
While composites have been used for decades, they’re relatively new to the centuries old metallics manufacturing industry. Recent advancements in carbon-fiber technologies have impacted CMCs, which are known for their ability to withstand higher temperatures as compared to their polymer composite counterparts. This capability is currently being employed in technologies used in the production of commercial products and defense-critical systems such as stealth aircraft, jet engines, and hypersonic weapons. LIFT is 1 of 18 Manufacturing USA Innovation Institutes designed to foster innovation, enhance domestic supply chains, and forge a skilled workforce to reestablish U.S. leadership in advanced manufacturing across the globe. Since the IBAS Program’s inception in 2014, the Innovation Capability and Modernization (ICAM) Office has invested over $2.6 bn across 206 projects to restore domestic manufacturing capacity and capability. ICAM is part of OASW(IBP)’s Manufacturing Capability Expansion and Investment Prioritization (MCEIP) Directorate within the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Resilience. 13 Feb 26. US: Homeland Security shutdown will increase partisan divisions, government stability risks. On 12 February, Senate Democrats blocked a spending bill that would have funded the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) beyond the 13 February shutdown deadline without any new reforms to immigration enforcement. Negotiations remain gridlocked amid entrenched partisan divisions over restrictions on federal immigration agents. As both chambers of Congress have now been dismissed for a week-long recess, DHS will almost certainly enter a shutdown on 14 February. In this scenario, the Republican leadership will likely push for another stopgap funding bill to keep the department running while negotiations continue. In a shutdown, all DHS essential missions and functions will continue, mitigating any broader national security risks. It is also unlikely that immigration enforcement operations will slow down. However, operations will possibly be moderately reduced at other DHS agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Still, we assess that a shutdown will likely be resolved in the short term, reducing longer-term travel and operational disruption risks. (Source: Sibylline)
