05 Sep 25. Military deployments to other cities remain possible, despite lawsuit. On 4 September, the capital Washington DC sued the Trump administration over the deployment of National Guard troops to the city. DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb is seeking a court order to block the deployment on the grounds that it violates the Constitution; the lawsuit describes the presence of troops as a ‘military occupation’. On the same day, reports indicated that the House of Representatives’ leadership does not plan to hold a vote to extend President Donald Trump’s takeover of the capital’s police before it expires next week. However, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser will likely co-ordinate with federal law enforcement on an indefinite basis going forward. Nonetheless, the lawsuit will increase supervision quality risks related to Trump’s growing tendency to deploy the US military on domestic soil. While the case proceeds, we assess that military deployments to address crime in New Orleans (Louisiana) and/or Chicago (Illinois) remain possible in the short term.
