03 Sep 25. Despite court ruling, military deployments to major urban centres will remain realistic possibility. On 2 September, a federal judge ruled that the Trump administration illegally used thousands of military troops in Los Angeles (California) to quell immigration-related protests in June. The judge specifically accused President Donald Trump of turning nearly 5,000 marines and National Guard soldiers into a ‘national police force’. However, the ruling only applies to California and allows time for the administration to appeal. On the same day, Trump stated that he was ‘going in’ to Chicago (Illinois) and would deploy National Guard troops; this will remain a realistic possibility in the coming days, despite the ruling. Any further use of the National Guard in major urban centres will significantly compound concerns that federal law prohibiting the use of the military for domestic law enforcement is being broken. If federal agents are deployed to Chicago, we assess that targeted activism and demonstrations against the security forces will be likely, increasing domestic unrest risks. Nevertheless, an augmented security forces presence would likely mitigate violent crime in Chicago in the short term, though long-term crime trends will be sustained. (Source: Sibylline)
