General Dynamics Land Systems Force Protection Europe (GDLS FPE) was established in 2009 to provide a UK-based vehicle support organisation for the world renowned Cougar vehicles (Mastiff, Ridgback and Wolfhound). Over 700 of these vehicles are in service with the UK MoD and continue to save heroes’ lives. Since its formation, GDLS FPE has developed a revolutionary light protected patrol vehicle, Ocelot. In 2010, Ocelot was awarded the contract for the UK’s Light Protected Patrol Vehicle Programme and named Foxhound by the MoD. It is the best protected vehicle for its weight and size available today. 16 Jun 12. Afghanistan: OP HERRICK. Tornados of 617 Squadron were involved in three Shows of Force (high-speed, low-level flights) during the past week: all were successful in dissuading insurgents to cease hostile action. (RAF Ops Update, 16 Jun 12.)
Afghan policemen accompanied by members of the King’s Royal Hussars and 1st Bn Welsh Guards cleared insurgents from the village of Pulpazay, East of Lashkar Gah. (MoD, 19 Jun 12.)
As at 31 May 12, UK Reaper had flown over 34,750 hours on Operations, the majority of which were in the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance role. Reaper aircrew have also deployed 281 weapons in response to requests for support from commanders on the ground. (MoD, 19 Jun 12.)

Comment: The Defence Select Committee announced (18 Jun 12) a new Inquiry: ‘Securing the Future of Afghanistan’. The Inquiry is to examine progress towards a secure and stable Afghanistan within the wider region and the plans for a smooth transition of responsibility for security to the Afghan Government. The Committee will take oral evidence during the remainder of 2012, with the first session at 14.30hrs on Tue 26 Jun 12 in the Wilson Room, Portcullis House. 15 Jun 12. France and Germany sign wide-ranging defence co-operation agreement. France and Germany have signed a wide-ranging letter of intent (LoI) that will broaden military procurement and development co-operation in areas ranging from unmanned aerial vehicles to future land combat systems: an agreement that points to greater multi-lateral co-operation in Europe, with Paris as a hub.
