19 Jun 25. NATO and Systematic mark Initial Operational Capability for SitaWare Headquarters – NATO’s future land C2 capability.  The NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency) and Systematic have formally marked the achievement of the Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for SitaWare Headquarters – NATO’s new command-and-control (C2) software for land forces, delivered under the DEMETER FLC2 project. The IOC declaration marks a significant step in modernising NATO’s land C2 capabilities. It supports the alliance’s transition towards more agile, data-driven decision-making with SitaWare Headquarters playing an integral role in strengthening C2 infrastructure across the land domain. The solution supports information superiority across strategic and operational levels, enabling NATO land forces to share accurate, real-time data in dynamic and contested environments. The Initial Operational Capability status reflects successful delivery across several core areas, including the deployment of SitaWare Headquarters at NATO sites, its integration into the alliance’s operational command framework, the provision of user training, and the availability of long-term support services. To mark this milestone, representatives from NATO and Systematic met at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on 18 June. The meeting included NCI Agency General Manager Ludwig Decamps and a delegation from Systematic, led by Founder and Chairman Michael Holm.

“The declaration of IOC marks a significant step in NATO’s ongoing efforts to modernise land Command and Control capabilities. SitaWare is a robust, interoperable solution, developed hand-in-hand with NCIA and NATO Allies, that will help strengthen our ability to operate together in the current complex environment,” stated NCIA General Manager Ludwig Decamps.

“With IOC now achieved, we are ready to support the continued operationalisation of SitaWare across NATO structures – ensuring users have the tools they need to plan, decide, and act in demanding environments,” said Michael Holm, Founder and Chairman of Systematic.

16 Jun 25. HENSOLDT group is unveiling its new IFF Mode 5 QRTK77 cryptographic module at Paris Air Show 2025. In a context of geopolitical uncertainty and changing priorities for the US administration priorities, and at a time when European leaders are talking about the need to strengthen the sovereignty of the European defence industry, the French subsidiary of the international HENSOLDT group is strengthening its range of IFF (Friend or Foe) equipment with the launch of a new mode 5 cryptographic computer, the QRTK77, unveiled this Monday at the Paris Air Show. Like the entire range of HENSOLDT France IFF products, this latest model complies with STANAG 4193 Ed. 3, guaranteeing interoperability within NATO and with its allies. The electrical and mechanical interfaces comply with DoD AIMS 04-900 option B. Designed to work with the American-format transponders, interrogators and CITs that equip many European and international platforms, the QRTK77 features a series of innovative features guaranteeing operational and maintenance simplicity. Capable of storing the equivalent of 3 months of encryption keys, the QRTK77 features a standby mode that extends the platform’s autonomy, and a battery designed to keep the time of the day (TOD) for up to ten days – almost three times longer than other models currently on the market. With no timer, this battery has the added advantage of being replaceable without a time limit, which means that operators run no risk of blocking the system if the manipulation takes longer than expected. What’s more, the QRTK77 incorporates a removable, external CIK (Crypto Ignition Key), making the system inoperable once removed and reinforcing the security and ease of use of the solution in theatres of operation. The QRTK77, made in France and ITAR-free, is compatible with a wide range of IFF subsystems, for all types of platforms: naval vessels, combat aircraft, ground radar stations, air defence systems, etc.

“HENSOLDT France SAS, a subsidiary of the HENSOLDT group, is currently the only European player to have the complete IFF chain (cryptographic calculators and hosts) and the only supplier of mode 5 cryptographic modules in France. With our recognised expertise in embedded cybersecurity and the design of high-security systems, we are very proud to have developed this innovative new model, which demonstrates the technical excellence of our engineers,” explains Philippe Guibourg, President of HENSOLDT France SAS. “At a time when the issue of protecting national sovereignty is being revived by current conflicts, we are delighted to announce that this model can be made available very quickly. We are ready to meet the growing needs of our customers, so that we can play our part in rearming Europe.” Come and see the QRTK77 and the wide range of sensors from the HENSOLDT group at the Paris Air Show from 16 to 22 June 2024, Hall 2b on stand G121.

16 Jun 25. Resilient fuel for a resilient Europe: Rheinmetall and INERATEC forge strategic partnership for decentralised fuel production. Europe’s fuel supply is entering a new era: critical infrastructures are to be supplied with safe synthetic fuels in the future. INERATEC, a leader in synthetic fuel production, and Rheinmetall, a global technology leader in the defense sector, have signed a strategic partnership to deploy scalable Power-to-Liquid (PtL) solutions across defense and critical infrastructure sectors. This collaboration marks a milestone in building resilient energy systems that operate independently from fossil fuel supply chains and vulnerable infrastructure.

Europe needs secure fuel supply

Modern defense strategies depend not only on technology and logistics but also on energy resilience. As fossil fuel supply chains become increasingly vulnerable in case of conflicts, the ability to produce carbon-neutral synthetic fuels on-site becomes essential. Hospitals, critical infrastructure, and armed forces alike require a stable, independent, and clean fuel supply – in peacetime and during crisis. The Giga PtX solution delivers secure, redundant and consistent access to high-quality fuel, independent of geopolitical dynamics. Giga PtX lays the groundwork for establishing a sustainable carbon-neutral fuel network all applications that are currently depending on fossil fuels. Fuel is an everyday essential. In military operations, fuel consumption can reach 20 to 60 liters per soldier per day. Yet fossil fuel logistics, designed for peacetime, are increasingly fragile. Synthetic e-Fuels are the only scalable solution that match the energy density, storability, and versatility of conventional fuels – making them indispensable for modern defense readiness.

“INERATEC makes an important contribution to resilience – and the defense sector is a powerful catalyst to scale resilient, clean technologies,” said Maximilian Backhaus, Chief Commercial Officer at INERATEC. “This partnership proves that energy resilience and defossilization go hand in hand. By delivering scalable Power-to-Liquid solutions for systemically important operations, we demonstrate how European climate tech can play a pioneering role – not only ecologically, but strategically.”

“e-Fuels are more than a technological solution – they are a strategic necessity. With Giga PtX, we are creating a scalable network that strengthens energy autonomy for Europe’s defense forces,” said Shena Britzen, Head of Hydrogen Program at Rheinmetall. “What matters is not just energy security, but the ability to act independently – in logistics, in operations, and in times of crisis.”

With this partnership, INERATEC and Rheinmetall are sending a clear message: Fossil fuel supply chains function in peacetime, but security requires resilience. Giga PtX will demonstrate how synthetic fuels is set to become a cornerstone of energy sovereignty. By providing access to INERATEC’s PtL systems through the current fuel logistic infostructure, militaries can decarbonize this critical sector with no changes to current vehicle technologies while increasing their flexibility in logistics.
