23 Oct 25. NioCorp, Lockheed partner on Pentagon‑funded scandium alloy work. Rare earths miner NioCorp  said on Thursday it is working with U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin (LMT.N), opens new tab to develop a scandium and aluminum alloy for use in military equipment as part of a Pentagon‑funded program. Colorado-based NioCorp received $10m from the Pentagon in August to develop a Nebraska mine that will produce scandium, one of the 17 rare earths. Lockheed is a key supplier to the U.S. military, including for fighter jets and other weaponry.  A portion of that funding is being used by NioCorp and Lockheed to develop an alloy of scandium and aluminum, with tests slated for 2027 for use in a range of equipment. An alloy of aluminum and scandium appeals to the Pentagon because it is lightweight, conducts electricity well, is corrosion-resistant, and holds all of those characteristics at a range of temperatures. Scandium is already used widely for defense, aerospace and energy applications, but nearly all supply comes from China, Russia and Ukraine. The U.S. has not mined scandium since 1969. NioCorp plans to extract the scandium from the Nebraska deposit and process the metal into an ingot form that a third party would use to create a powder that can be used in 3D printing to make replacement parts for Lockheed. 21 Oct 25. IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), the world’s leading quantum company, today released the technical papers that demonstrate 99.99% two-qubit gate performance, setting a new quantum computing world record. The performance of quantum computers today is limited by the error rate of its two-qubit gates, called “two-qubit gate fidelity.” This single number largely defines quantum computing performance – measuring the accuracy of quantum operations. As fidelity improves, fewer errors must be addressed and more complex algorithms can be run. In a landmark technical result, IonQ has achieved the world’s highest two-qubit gate performance, with fidelity exceeding 99.99% – the first and only quantum computing company to cross the ‘four-nines’ benchmark. The demonstration released today, achieved using IonQ’s proprietary Electronic Qubit Control technology (EQC), surpasses the previous world record of 99.97% set in 2024 by Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ. This new world record represents a critical technical milestone that advances IonQ’s leading quantum technology roadmap. By engineering qubits with record-level fidelity, IonQ has now achieved the hardware performance required for it to scale to ms of qubits by 2030. This is a historic achievement that positions IonQ well ahead of its competitors.

IonQ’s ultra-high qubit performance accelerates the company’s path to large-scale fault-tolerant systems and unlocks major advantages:

  • Error-corrected performance improves dramatically: IonQ’s unparalleled qubit performance means customers will be able to run applications with a 1010 (10,000,000,000x) performance increase over the previous gold standard of 99.9% on the same size device*
  • Complex, break-through use cases can be addressed: High-performing qubits enable complex algorithms that lower-performance systems simply cannot address
  • Products can be delivered faster: Fewer physical qubits are needed to build large-scale fault-tolerant quantum systems and IonQ’s time to market decreases due to fewer errors per operation.

IonQ’s qubit performance result was achieved using prototypes in its R&D labs, which will form the basis for its 256-qubit systems that will be demonstrated in 2026. These devices rely on the company’s novel EQC technology, which uniquely uses precision electronics instead of lasers to control its qubits. By integrating all qubit-control components onto classical semiconductor chips, IonQ can manufacture its quantum computers via existing semiconductor fabrication – yielding systems that are easier to scale, more stable to operate, and significantly more cost-effective to build.

“Reaching four-nines fidelity is a watershed moment for IonQ’s quantum leadership,” said Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ. “This level of quantum performance has been the industry’s north star for decades and crossing it brings fault-tolerant quantum systems years closer to mass market adoption. For our global customers, it means unlocking more value from quantum computing sooner, while dramatically lowering the cost and complexity of large-scale systems.”

“This is a pivotal moment for the quantum computing industry, as we have now hit world-record quantum computing performance on mass-manufacturable technology,” said Dr. Chris Ballance, co-founder of Oxford Ionics, an IonQ company. “In exceeding the 99.99% threshold on chips built in standard semiconductor fabs, we are now on a clear path to ms of qubits whilst unlocking powerful new commercial applications sooner.”

IonQ is already delivering quantum advantage for industries in areas such as drug discovery, with a 20x speed-up in quantum-accelerated drug development announced in June this year and an up to 12 percent performance improvement compared to classical computing in computer aided engineering unveiled in March. IonQ has also announced the development of quantum applications in areas such as object detection for autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence.

10 Oct 25. Modern operations depend on connecting systems and sharing information between those systems. Disparate systems are not always designed to work together — the successful use of one technology does not guarantee integration with another. Integration of multiple systems, or the lack thereof, could determine the outcome of a future fight, and it must be solved with urgency. This is especially true on land, where unstructured terrain, response time, and comms-denied environments introduce real operational constraints. Last month, Anduril worked with Overland AI to conduct a joint field demonstration to explore how autonomous ground and air systems can coordinate in real time to detect and respond to emerging threats. The test showcased how autonomous uncrewed ground vehicles, operating as part of a connected system, can share information, coordinate actions, and deliver a rapid response from standoff in a counter-UAS operation. The setup began in a convoy formation. Two of Overland’s ULTRA ground vehicles, running Overland AI’s OverDrive autonomy stack, carried a suite of Anduril sensors, radars, and electronic warfare payloads, alongside a crewed vehicle. Nearby, an Anduril UAS provided overwatch — connected through the same network, ready to act on any threats it spotted. The scenario began with the Anduril’s Ghost-X spotting incoming enemy drones in the distance, out of line of sight from the manned vehicle. The operator tasked both ULTRAs to drive up nearby hills to grab a read on the enemy drones. Designed for aggressive manoeuvre and unstructured terrain, Overland AI’s autonomy enabled both vehicles to rapidly reposition into elevated overwatch without human intervention. The integrated Anduril sensors on the ULTRAs began to detect and track drone activity. Within moments, that data flowed across the network, alerting operators and providing all necessary information to respond with EW countermeasures. Every step — manoeuvre, detection, tracking, and response — happened through one shared interface without manual coordination or data transfers. The goal was to see how autonomy behaves when different vehicles with different jobs operate as one system. The result was clear: the network held, the handoffs worked, and both air and ground systems responded in sync. It’s one step in a larger effort to understand how connected autonomy can extend awareness, shorten reaction time, and make complex operations simpler to run. With efforts like these, Anduril is connecting the future fight one system at a time. (Source: joint-forces.com)

20 Oct 25. US Army Names 8 Winners of Inaugural Tech Competition. Eight companies were announced as winners of the Army’s xTechDisrupt competition Oct. 15 at the Association of the U.S. Army’s 2025 Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, D.C. A total of 375 companies participated in the event, giving one-minute pitches to three-judge panels in one of four key areas: electronic warfare; power generation, management or storage; unmanned aerial systems; and counter-unmanned aerial systems. Thirty-two finalists then pitched their solutions before the winners were selected. Each winner will receive $62,500 and an opportunity to participate in the U.S. Army Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center experimentation event in Hawaii scheduled for Nov. 7–16. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll lauded the companies that participated in the event, an Army effort to find agile, adaptive and lethal technology solutions from eligible small- to medium-sized businesses.

“To the companies that participated: You are the innovators that will make the Army great and strong for the next 250 years,” he said.

Matt Willis, Army FUZE director, acknowledged the “exceptional talent and innovation we have across the small-business ecosystem.”

FUZE is an initiative that provides funding to startups to purchase and field equipment to soldiers in weeks, instead of years. The xTechDisrupt competition at the AUSA meeting was the first competition in the program.

“The xTechdisrupt program that we’ve run here at AUSA is a clear example of how the Army FUZE program is not just talk—we’re delivering on the secretary’s imperative to identify, test and accelerate innovation on operationally relevant timelines,” Willis said. “It’s about moving ideas quickly from concept to operational reality.”

The eight winning companies are:

* R2 Wireless, which pitched passive radiofrequency detection, classification, geolocation and tracking.

20 Oct 25. Advanced Navigation, a global leader in assured positioning, navigation and timing (APNT) and autonomous systems, has introduced a new line of defence-ready inertial navigation systems (INS), featuring integrated Electronic Protection (EP) capabilities. Purpose-built to counter electromagnetic warfare (EW) threats, the EP product range ensures mission continuity and confidence amidst a global surge in GNSS jamming and spoofing engagements.

The EP range includes:

  • Boreas D Series – including the Boreas D50, D70, and D90 fibre-optic gyroscope (FOG)-based INS. Engineered for high-threat operational theatres, the Boreas D series supports multiple vehicle types, linking to Battlefield Management Systems (BMS) and Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS), enabling comprehensive logistical and combat management of PNT.
  • Certus Evo – an ultra-high accuracy MEMS GNSS/INS system. Delivering superior performance in a compact, low-SWaP-C form factor, the Certus Evo is ideal for applications demanding navigation, stabilisation and pointing under high-dynamics conditions.

The rollout builds on Advanced Navigation’s announcement to establish PNT Centres of Excellence (COE) across the UK, US and Europe, a strategic move to directly address the evolving operational needs of NATO forces, and turbocharge collaborations with regional defence and technology leaders to build onshore capability from within allied nations.

Maximilian Doemling, Chief Product Officer at Advanced Navigation, said:  “Countering signal jamming and spoofing requires solutions that are several steps ahead – we must evolve our defence systems to align with battlefield realities. This means embedding Electronic Protection into the foundation of every system. Our new Electronic Protection range takes our proven inertial navigation technology and combines it with advanced capabilities to detect and neutralise interference in real time. The array of options allows integrators and primes to tailor the navigation solution to their platform’s mission profile, threat environment, and SWaP-C requirements. For defence operators, this means more reliability and resilience in high-threat situations.”

17 Oct 25.  The U.S. Army is working to provide soldiers with new technology that can transform air into potable drinking water. The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center and AirJoule Technologies Corporation announced a partnership Oct. 7 that will see new systems developed to provide soldiers with clean water in deprived environments. The three-year cooperative research and development agreement will build upon existing nanogrid technology fielded by the Army and AirJoule’s moisture extraction system to create new resources for soldiers.

“AirJoule can operate in a wide range of environments, particularly when surface water and ground water sources are unavailable or contaminated,” Matt Jore, AirJoule Technologies chief executive officer, said in a news release. “We believe this collaboration will help secure a reliable source of pure water for our troops, and we’re excited to work with ERDC on this research initiative.”

The AirJoule system is a new twist on de-humidification, extracting moisture from the atmosphere and transforming captured water vapor into clean water with energy efficiency. The Army’s nanogrid, unveiled in January, is the first of its kind used by the service. It is a small, self-sufficient energy system powered by hydrogen fuel that can operate noiselessly and independently from electric grid power. Combining it with AirJoule’s technology could enable soldiers to have a constant and reliable source of clean water while on the move in hazardous and undeveloped areas. An off-the-grid system capable of transforming air moisture into water would potentially eliminate a multitude of logistical hurdles for troops in the field. Access to clean water has been an essential for successful field operations throughout history, and lack of it can cause catastrophes. The crusaders lost the Battle of Hattin to Saladin in 1187 largely due to a water supply crisis. Centuries later, during World War II, Merrill’s Marauders were plagued by dehydration and disease from contaminated water sources while conducting irregular warfare operations in Burma, with some resorting to chopping bamboo into pieces to alleviate their thirst. The U.S. Marines at Peleliu suffered from both dehydration and sickness from drinking contaminated water transported in oil drums, or from stagnant puddles amid the gory island battlefield. Existing water purification technology often requires complex efforts to use effectively. In May, the Missouri Army National Guard’s 935th Aviation Support Battalion (ASB) deployed a water purification team to Trinidad and Tobago in support of a multinational exercise. Although lightweight, their water purifiers relied on existing water sources plus four different filters plus added chlorine to clean. By contrast, AirJoule’s system, relying only on the atmosphere, can effectively produce water in areas where water is nonexistent. Its metal organic framework can hold more than half its weight in water vapor. It requires minimal energy to convert vapor into liquid, potentially expanding soldiers’ range of mission capabilities in addition to solving existing problems. (Source: Defense News)
