24 Sep 25. Emerson announced the signing of an agreement with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) to advance wideband characterization methods for active electronically scanned array (AESA) systems. This joint effort aims to accelerate innovation, improve test coverage, and reduce risks for industries adopting next-generation AESA technologies, including aerospace and telecommunications. AESA architectures are rapidly transforming radar, communications, and navigation systems, driving the need for more sophisticated and real-world-relevant test methodologies. To address this demand, Emerson will work with VUB to develop innovative approaches for wideband characterization of RF and microwave components and subsystems used in AESA systems.  As part of the collaboration, Emerson is providing NI PXI test hardware and vector signal transceiver (VST) instruments to VUB. These tools enable multichannel, high-fidelity signal generation and analysis, allowing researchers to validate component behavior under realistic wideband conditions. This joint effort aims to accelerate innovation, improve test coverage, and reduce risks for industries adopting next-generation AESA technologies.

Nuessgen and Professor Dries Peumans of VUB’s Electricity Department signed the agreement during an official ceremony held at European Microwave Week.

Solus Power, a pioneering UK energy technology company, has secured a contract with the Ministry of Defence’s Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) to develop its novel, dual-use battery technology, ‘Kratos’. Having successfully won funding through DASA’s competition to find innovations that enhance operational advantage through improved self-sufficiency and energy innovation. Solus Power has been awarded funding to accelerate the development of its military-grade portable battery unit. Solus Power will work with DASA and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) to advance development and enter field testing of the dual-use technology. As technical partner, Dstl will ensure the technology meets the needs and operational requirements for the Royal Navy’s Future Commando Force which is funding the work. Kratos has been recognised for its ability to enhance deployed self-sufficiency and endurance across maritime, land, and air domains, while reducing logistical burden and optimising power and energy use. 22 Sep 25.  First F-47 now being built, will fly in 2028: US Air Force chief. The Air Force’s first F-47 fighter is now being built by Boeing, and the advanced jet is expected to have its initial flight in 2028, Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin said Monday. Allvin, speaking at the Air and Space Forces’ Air, Space and Cyber Conference, said that Boeing’s team worked quickly to start manufacturing the sixth-generation fighter after their selection was announced in March.

“It’s the platform that, along with the rest of the [accompanying family of] systems, is going to ensure [air] dominance into the future,” Allvin said. “In the few short months since we made the [F-47] announcement, they are already beginning to manufacture the first article. We’re ready to go fast. We have to go fast.”

The F-47, previously known as Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD), is intended to replace the F-22 Raptor. Little is known about the highly classified aircraft, but it is expected to have state-of-the-art stealth capabilities, weapons and engines and fly with autonomous drone wingmen known as collaborative combat aircraft. In May, Allvin posted a graphic online that said the F-47 will have a combat radius of more than 1,000 nautical miles, and be able to fly at speeds greater than Mach 2, or more than 1,500 miles per hour. In that May post, Allvin said the Air Force plans to buy at least 185 F-47s, which would match or exceed the size of the F-22 fleet. For the Air Force to succeed in a future war, Allvin noted that it must be able to overwhelmingly dominate adversaries in the sky, and said the F-47 will provide that capability.

“It’s not enough just to be able to stick the jab,” Allvin said. “You’ve got to be able to let your adversary know you can put them on the canvas.”

During his AFA keynote, Allvin lauded the people working on the F-47 and said their enthusiasm will ensure the program will be successful. He showed video of Boeing employees at the company’s fighter production facility in St. Louis, Missouri, cheering loudly the morning they found out President Donald Trump was about to announce they will build the F-47.

“Those aren’t people who just show up to work,” Allvin said. “Those are people who are committed to do something great for the nation. This milestone confirms the software’s design is robust and ready to advance into system integration. The innovative modular architecture empowers the Air Force to add new applications swiftly—without costly rewrites – transforming how mission systems evolve in the field.

The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) demonstrated its important role within UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) at Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) 2025, showcasing exciting innovations and strengthening innovator engagement.

New competition launch addresses critical battlefield medical challenge

Minister of State, Lord Coaker, officially launched the Novel Technology for Intervening in Non-Compressible Haemorrhage competition during DSEI’s opening keynote. This £1.5m competition seeks innovative medical device technologies to treat non-compressible haemorrhage, a leading cause of preventable battlefield deaths as well as in the civilian world. The initiative highlights DASA’s commitment to developing life-saving technologies for on the battlefield and beyond. DASA’s Innovation in Support of Operations competition team hosted a successful event, bringing together cutting-edge Innovators with key defence stakeholders. With over 100 applications for just 20 available pitch slots, the overwhelming response demonstrated the sector’s appetite for collaboration and innovation. The forum provided innovators with dedicated 15-minute sessions to present their technologies, receiving direct feedback and guidance from MOD and DASA representatives. The event generated promising connections and fresh ideas, with plans already underway for similar regular sessions.

Regional investment strengthens UK defence capabilities

UKDI announced a significant £1.5m investment over 2 years in Regional Defence and Security Clusters (RDSCs). Speaking to over 100 industry and defence representatives, officials outlined how this investment will foster collaboration across sectors and ensure innovation reaches where it is most needed. RDSCs help bring our world-leading primes together with our innovative SMEs and start-ups, academia, and local and devolved government to solve the military capability challenges we face. UKDI will work closely with the Regional Defence and Security Clusters to foster collaboration across sectors and ensure innovation is delivered where it’s needed most. UK-funded suppliers from DASA’s Electronic Warfare competition presented their innovations on the AUKUS stand, demonstrating the collaborative nature of the AUKUS partnership. The presentations attracted significant interest, with packed attendance highlighting the importance of electronic warfare capabilities in modern defence.

DASA-funded suppliers demonstrate commercial success

DASA’s exhibition stand, which also hosted the Futures Lab team, featured innovative technologies from NW PRO, a DASA-funded supplier specialising in airport scanning technologies to improve security. Their presence highlighted the practical applications of DASA’s investment in UK innovation.

One significant milestone was achieved when Uplift360, originally funded by DASA to develop body armour recycling technology, signed a major contract with Babcock to recycle Typhoon jet components. This expansion from their original DASA project demonstrates how DASA funding enables companies to scale and diversify their capabilities across the defence sector.
