AX-FORCE™ Bidirectional power converter sets new standards in aerospace and defence power conversion. Delivering unrivalled efficiency, compactness, and configurability, this bidirectional power converter is engineered to support a broad range of electrification and mission-critical applications while ensuring reliability under the most demanding conditions. Enabling seamless AC/DC and DC/AC power flow with efficiencies exceeding 96%, AX-FORCE™ is scalable to 150kW and delivers up to five times the system power of traditional solutions in a lightweight, modular design. 09 Sep 25. Industry partners form GCAP Electronics Evolution consortium to deliver sensing and communications for next generation fighter. The defence electronics industry champions representing Japan, the UK and Italy have formed a consortium, readying the partners to embark on the design and development phase of the integrated sensing and communications component of the GCAP, the Global Combat Air Programme. The companies: Mitsubishi Electric representing Japan, Leonardo UK representing the UK and both Leonardo and ELT Group representing Italy, originally announced the signing of a collaboration agreement at DSEI Japan in March 2023 and, following extensive trilateral work, signed a consortium agreement this August. The forming of a consortium formalises that collaboration as a commercial construct, representing substantial progress at an industrial level and reinforcing the partners’ long-term commitment to GCAP. The consortium, named GCAP Electronics Evolution (G2E), is standing up in readiness to accept a contract from Edgewing, the business joint venture between BAE Systems (UK), Leonardo (Italy) and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. (Japan), representing the lead systems integrators for the GCAP combat aircraft. The four companies will work together to deliver the next generation combat aircraft’s advanced sensing and communication system, known as Integrated Sensing and Non-Kinetic Effects & Integrated Communications Systems (ISANKE & ICS), as well as the system’s decades-long Through-Life Support Service (TLSS). ISANKE & ICS is at the heart of the GCAP endeavour. The integration and exploitation of the vast amount of information that will be available in the future operational environment will be one of the key differences that will set the GCAP core platform apart from previous generations of combat aircraft. The consortium is being designed to deliver in line with the ambitious timescales set by GCAP while ensuring accountability at every level and supporting each country’s freedom of action and freedom of modification. The consortium leadership team will be based in Reading, UK, close to the GCAP International Government Organisation (GIGO), representing the three national ministries of defence, and Edgewing to ensure the closest possible collaboration with these organisations. As a consortium, GCAP Electronics Evolution is committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to advance the common security, economic and skills goals of the partner nations. It will continue to leverage the expertise and resources of each participating country, through deepening trilateral cooperation, to enhance security across Europe and Asia-Pacific for decades to come.

 

09 Sep 25. Anduril to develop mixed reality system for US Army. The system is being developed as part of the Soldier Borne Mission Command (formerly IVAS Next) programme. Anduril has secured a $159m contract from the US Army to embark on a prototyping phase aimed at building an advanced helmet-mounted night vision and mixed reality system.  The effort, part of the Soldier Borne Mission Command (SBMC) programme, focuses on providing soldiers with better situational awareness by integrating advanced night vision, augmented reality, and AI. Anduril is joining forces with Meta, OSI, Qualcomm Technologies, and Gentex to develop a helmet-mounted mixed reality system that blends night vision technology with augmented reality. The system will provide soldiers with a comprehensive visual experience by merging imagery from various light spectrums daylight, nighttime, and thermal with live battlefield data. The company’s approach includes a modular component framework designed to allow soldiers the flexibility to tailor their equipment based on mission-specific requirements. The SBMC-Architecture (SBMC-A), originally known as the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS), serves as the software infrastructure essential for integrating new helmet-mounted displays and edge computing hardware into a deployable soldier-ready system. Anduril leads this SBMC-A effort alongside partners such as Palantir Technologies and L3Harris Technologies, among others. Leveraging more than260,000 hours of soldier feedback from the IVAS programme, Anduril said it has successfully conducted multiple field tests with the Army using IVAS 1.2 headsets integrated with its Lattice platform. These tests have included four soldier exercises and combat training scenarios that showcased the potential of meshed heads-up displays and distributed edge computing devices. SBMC-A has the ability for individual soldiers to command drones directly from their helmets without needing a dedicated pilot. This capability was demonstrated over a 3km distance using a line-of-sight radio connection to an IVAS 1.2 headset integrated with Lattice. The SBMC-A programme has engaged 14 industry partners and welcomed third-party developers through the Lattice Partner Ecosystem. Ploughshare, the Ministry of Defence’s trusted commercialisation partner, has launched The Technology and Growth Alliance, which will aim to create an ecosystem that accelerates innovation, unlocks new technologies that can improve our day to day lives, and drive long-term economic growth.  The alliance was launched today at the DSEI defence and security conference in London, and will bring together defence firms, academia, investors, accelerators and organisations from across the industry. Founding members – ADS Group, BAE Systems, CBI, Cranfield University, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), Future Planet Group, Gallos Tech, Helsing, IoT Tribe, Leonardo, NPL, QinetiQ, Thales, The D Group, and UK Defence Investor Network – have pledged to turn cutting-edge IP into commercial success, driving growth and ensuring it spills over into the wider economy.  The defence sector has a rich history of creating innovations that have become integral to our daily lives, from GPS navigation and microwave ovens to the internet and life-saving medical devices like EpiPens, technologies initially designed for military purposes that have seamlessly transitioned to benefit society at large. History has shown that these ideas can be commercialised, but pathways to market are often beset by challenges.   Ploughshare, drawing on two decades of experience turning defence technologies into real-world solutions, will act as the alliance’s convenor – bringing members together to overcome these challenges. The alliance will provide a framework for jointly stewarding and exploiting intellectual property. Its vision is to translate defence R&D into commercial opportunities that strengthen sovereign capability, create new businesses and high-value jobs, boost exports, and ensure public investment delivers long-term economic and societal benefit for the United Kingdom.  The government has invested more than £20bn in defence R&D over the last twenty years, with a significant proportion of that funding going to private industry, academia and research organisations. This funding has helped developed groundbreaking technologies designed to protect frontline troops. Yet many of these innovations have remained confined to military use. This means their potential to save lives, transform industries, and support public services like the NHS has gone untapped.

Ploughshare CEO Hetti Barkworth-Nanton explains: “We are sitting on a goldmine of technology that can transform the world around us, but we’ve traditionally struggled to get these solutions out of defence and into the wider world. The alliance aims to be the catalyst that releases the full potential of defence-born technologies – ensuring innovation spills over into society, boosts the economy, and supports services like the NHS. At present, barely a handful of spin-outs emerge from defence IP each year, but with so much cutting-edge work happening in UK firms, there’s no reason we shouldn’t see 20 to 30 new companies launched annually.
