22 Jan 25. New patent search tool to boost UK innovation. Today’s launch is part of the UK Intellectual Property Office’s major digital transformation. A new online search tool for UK patents launched today will make it easier for businesses and innovators to search and access patent information, supporting UK growth and innovation.

One IPO Search, developed by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), replaces the previous Ipsum service, which has served UK innovators well for 13 years – handling approximately 200,000 patent searches in the last 12 months alone.

The new service offers enhanced features to help IP professionals and the public search for UK patents more easily. It represents a ‘generational leap’ which will transform how customers can search for and discover patents, opening up the IPO’s data to all UK citizens.

Its launch marks a significant milestone in the IPO’s ambitious ‘One IPO’ transformation programme – a comprehensive modernisation of UK intellectual property services. In addition to One IPO Search, the transformation programme will deliver a suite of new digital services in the second half of 2025, including streamlined patent applications services and innovative customer account management systems.

Key features

The new service makes UK patent searching more accessible through:

  • simple keyword searching – find relevant patents by describing your product or technology in everyday language
  • visual data analysis – spot market trends without needing specialist knowledge
  • downloadable patent information – share findings easily with your team
  • clear, user-friendly interface – navigate patent information without requiring technical expertise

Positive early feedback

Early testing has shown strong results, with 82% of users agreeing the service met their needs and 86% saying they found it easy to use.

Future developments

Several additional features will be coming to One IPO Search in the future, including:

  • save searches and get patent notifications (2025)
  • AI-assisted searching
  • integrated trade mark and design searches (2026)
  • new APIs for bulk data access

  1. The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) is the official UK government body responsible for intellectual property rights including patents, designs, trade marks and copyright.
  2. The IPO received nearly 20,000 patent applications in 2023 alone.
  3. One IPO Search is now available on GOV.UK.
  4. The One IPO transformation programme represents the largest modernisation of UK intellectual property services in a generation, delivering new digital services throughout 2025 and 2026.
  5. An API (Application Programming Interface) allows different computer systems to communicate with each other. In this case, it will enable businesses to automatically receive patent data directly into their own systems rather than manually searching for it.
  6. A Supplementary Protection Certificate (SPC) extends patent protection for up to five years on pharmaceutical and plant protection products that require lengthy testing and clinical trials before they can be marketed.

16 Jan 25. Lockheed Martin recently approved the use of Synthetic Aviation Turbine Fuels (SATF) in the F-35 Lightning II. The new fuel sources will improve readiness by reducing reliance on the extended supply chain.

“Lockheed Martin is committed to ensuring the F-35 is always ready for any customer mission,” said Chauncey McIntosh, vice president and general manager of the F-35 programme at Lockheed Martin. “Adding new fuel sources helps make this happen by diversifying the supply chain while maintaining operational excellence. As the cornerstone of the joint fleet, the F-35 will continue to lead the US and allied air dominance mission for decades to come.”

What it means:

  • The approval allows F-35s to operate with synthetic blends at currently approved limits of up to 50 percent, depending on the type of raw materials and production pathway, combined with conventional jet fuel.
  • Lockheed Martin completed comprehensive technical and strategic analysis to ensure SATF meets the strict performance and reliability standards required for the F-35’s complex, high-demand missions.
  • The integration of SATF supports the [US] Department of Defense’s objectives for energy substitution and diversification while enhancing energy resilience and operational flexibility.

What are Synthetic Aviation Turbine Fuels? SATF are derived from various raw materials, including fossil-based sources such as coal and natural gas, as well as renewable or sustainable sources like waste oils, agricultural residues and other non-fossil-based sources.

About the F-35: More than 1,100 F-35s are currently operational around the globe, and the fleet has surpassed 971,700 flight hours. F-35s operate from 33 bases worldwide, including ten nations operating on home soil. 17 Jan 25. Americans Bring 3D-Printed Gun Content to Chinese Social Media App Amid TikTok Ban. As the United States grapples with the impending ban on TikTok, a growing number of young Americans have begun flocking to RedNote, a Chinese social media platform, some with the singular intent to propagate content about 3D-printed firearms. Known as Xiaohongshu in China, RedNote is traditionally used for lifestyle content, but it has recently become a stage for niche American users advocating for gun rights and sharing instructions on manufacturing “ghost guns”—untraceable firearms built using 3D printers. Prominent among this niche wave of users is an individual operating under the alias “YZY Prints,” who has used the platform to promote 3D-printed gun content. First reported by the Daily Dot, YZY has uploaded videos demonstrating the creation of plastic firearms, alongside links to platforms like “The Gatalog,” a repository of blueprints for these weapons. In one RedNote post, YZY declared, “Learn to 3D print guns like an American.” YZY and other enthusiasts have framed their activities as a form of advocacy for universal gun rights. The content has sparked a mix of reactions on the platform. Some Chinese users responded with the slang term “666,” which means “awesome” or “cool,” while others expressed concern about potential repercussions from Chinese authorities. One Chinese user commented, “It is best not to show too much 3D2A [3D-printed firearm content] on this platform, otherwise the authorities may separate us into Chinese and foreign nations.” While 3D-printed guns exist in a legal gray area in the U.S., China enforces strict bans on private firearm ownership. 17 Jan 25. The future of ‘invisible war’ has been trialled on SPECTRAL PROPHET by UK Dstl using emerging and next generation electromagnetic concepts. The future of ‘invisible war’ has been trialled by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) using emerging and next generation electromagnetic (EM) concepts.

Supremacy in the EM environment is as crucial to warfighting as any of the traditional domains. Overwhelming the adversary through degrading and defeating their command and control systems provides commanders with significant strategic advantage. Dstl’s ‘SPECTRAL PROPHET’ trial was an ambitious demonstration of prototype EM activities that combined previously separate disciplines. It also demonstrated other emerging EM technology that could be integrated in future work, including deception and countermeasures, in both offensive and defensive capacities.

By sharing data, status and tasking across a distributed command and control (C2) infrastructure, existing and new radio frequency (RF) transceivers can be employed to better effect and allow new ways of working that are currently not possible. Combining the data from multiple sensors and effectors provide a more automated process to give commanders greater strategic awareness and operational advantage.

Dstl technology lead, Chris, said: “We are building the technology that allows information to get to where it needs to in near real time whilst filtering out information that isn’t needed.”

Dstl SPECTRAL PROPHET technical lead, Jon, said: “The trial and supporting programme draws on years of Ministry of Defence Chief Scientific Adviser funded research. We have funded a lot of work, for example, our university-based EM Hub. We’re building UK skills which supports the government’s growth agenda.”

SPECTRAL PROPHET was supported by a range of suppliers from prime contractors, small and medium sized enterprises and academia. Defence funding in EM research helps develop and maintain highly skilled jobs across the UK. The results of the trial will help inform decisions around the Strategic Defence and Security Review and demonstrate how new capability can be integrated more rapidly and better value for money achieved. Conceptual architectures and specific technologies have been developed to experiment with and de-risk this integration; as well as to identify lessons and requirements for subsequent procurements.
