23 May 24. Airbus takes superconductivity research for hydrogen-powered aircraft a step further.

Airbus UpNext, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus, has launched a new technological demonstrator to accelerate the maturation of superconducting technologies for use in electric propulsion systems of a future hydrogen-powered aircraft.
Knownas Cryoprop, the new demonstrator will integrate and mature a two megawatt-class superconducting electric propulsion system cooled by liquid hydrogen via a helium recirculation loop and developed by Airbus teams in Toulouse, France, and Ottobrunn, Germany.
“Our previous demonstrators have shown that superconducting technologies would be a key enabler for the high-power electrification of future hydrogen-powered aircraft. I truly believe that the new demonstrator will lead to performance improvements of the propulsion system, translating into significant weight and fuel saving potential” said Michael Augello, CEO Airbus UpNext.
Airbus has been developing superconducting technologies for high-power electric propulsion for several years, culminating in the power-on of an integrated 500 kW cryogenic propulsion system last year.
Cryoprop will confirm the potential of superconducting technologies for future aircraft applications, assessing all aspects related to safety, industrialisation, maintenance and operations. This demonstrator will also give Airbus the opportunity to develop high-level, in-house expertise and foster a new ecosystem to accelerate the introduction of new products in areas such as superconducting cables, motors, cryogenic power electronics and cryogenic cooling systems.

Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE: NOC) B-21 Raider continues its flight test campaign at Edwards Air Force Base, California, led by a Combined Test Force (CTF) comprised of Northrop Grumman and U.S. Air Force personnel. CTF test pilots indicate the jet is performing as expected with the aircraft flying like the simulator, reflecting the precision of the digital environment on B-21.
22 May 24. Sikorsky Flight-Tests Scalable ‘Rotor Blown Wing’ UAS for DARPA Project. The VTOL tail sitter features proprotors for flight efficiencySikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company (NYSE: LMT), is conducting flight tests to mature the control laws and aerodynamics of a novel vertical takeoff and landing uncrewed aerial system (VTOL / UAS). The flight tests are intended to prove the efficiency and scalability of a twin proprotor ‘rotor blown wing’ configuration that sits on its tail to take-off and land like a helicopter, and transitions easily to horizontal forward flight for long-endurance missions, such as intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting.
The ongoing flight tests support the Ancillary initiative by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which seeks to develop a Class 3 UAS VTOL X-Plane that can operate in most weather conditions from ship decks and unprepared surfaces without infrastructure. Sikorsky is one of several competitors down-selected to advance their UAS conceptual designs into the next development phase.
The term ‘rotor blown wing’ refers to the constant airflow from the proprotor wash across the wing. Sikorsky chose the design to reduce drag on the wing in hover mode and when transitioning to forward flight, and to increase cruise efficiencies and endurance.
The design is just one of the many ways Sikorsky is advancing 21st Century Security® technologies and innovations, said Igor Cherepinsky, director of rapid prototyping group Sikorsky Innovations.
“Flight tests are underway to verify our tail-sitting rotor blown wing UAS can launch and land vertically with high stability, and cruise efficiently on wing,” said Cherepinsky. “Key enablers to flight maneuverability, and future vehicle scalability, are our MATRIX autonomy flight control system, and an articulated rotor system similar to those in traditional helicopters.”
For the flight tests now underway, Sikorsky is flying a proof-of-concept vehicle powered by a battery. If selected to produce an air vehicle for a future ANCILLARY phase, Sikorsky plans to build a 300-pound hybrid-electric version to include a 60-pound ISR payload.

Marshall has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Romanian manufacturer, Bluespace Technology that will see them explore opportunities to partner on the design, development and integration of electromagnetic shielding and TEMPEST capabilities within containerised solutions. The agreement was signed on-site today at the Black Sea Defense & Aerospace International Exhibition (BSDA) taking place in Bucharest, Romania.
The MoU covers areas where the two companies’ capabilities, products and services complement each other, and where their defence and business focus can be jointly expanded to provide end-to-end solutions to military customers.

21 May 24. US: State-level AI regulation signals rising regulatory framework, compliance risks for tech sector. On 20 May, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed a law that requires developers of artificial intelligence (AI) to avoid algorithmic discrimination in high-risk systems. Furthermore, the law requires developers to conduct impact assessments and to disclose information about the systems to regulators and the public. The law marks the US’ largest attempt at regulating the AI industry so far. Additionally, on 15 May, two bills aimed at regulating the impacts of AI on elections advanced out of a Senate panel. Nonetheless, sweeping federal regulation on AI remains unlikely in the near term as lawmakers remain divided on the issue. As such, we assess that state governments are increasingly likely to advance their own regulation, driven by sustained concerns over consumer protection and the potential impacts on November’s election.
