07 Sep 23. Quaze Technologies introduce autonomous wireless power transfer technology to the defence sector at DSEi 23.

Quaze Technologies, a Canada-based innovative technology company and the creator of wide-surface wireless power transfer, is introducing their revolutionary autonomous wireless power transfer capabilities to the defence sector at DSEi 23. Quaze have partnered with Rheinmetall to bring this innovative technology to life via an agnostic unmanned wireless charging solution for autonomous robotics.

The Quaze concept demonstrator remote charging solution, named Drone Swarm Tactical OverWatch (DSTOW™), will be featured as part of Rheinmentall’s innovation portfolio at DSEi on Stand H5-110 where they are showcasing the Quaze DSTOW on the Mission Master SP autonomous unmanned ground vehicle.  It will be active and will wirelessly recharge 3 Parrot ANAFI USA drones.  Within this collaboration, Quaze is responsible for the recharging plus the automated drone relays and, Rheinmetall, the software that controls the drone missions.

The DSTOW addresses a critical need in the world of drone operations, enabling the continuous aerial support of tethered drones with the flexibility and freedom of untethered flights. With just one Quaze DSTOW, up to three drones of any make or model can charge wirelessly and simultaneously, ensuring reliable charging even in the most hostile environments. This reduces the constraints associated with battery levels, connecting charging cables, or swapping batteries. It’s seamless, efficient, and paves the way for autonomous and uninterrupted drone missions. The DSTOW’s versatility extends across platforms and applications. Whether mounted on various vehicles or employed in static operations, such as mobile command centers, the DSTOW remains a dynamic solution. Its adaptable form factor accommodates UAVs of all sizes and seamlessly integrates onto diverse platforms, ensuring the readiness of drones for extended missions or remote swarm operations.

07 Sep 23. ST Engineering and Ultra develop new vehicle architecture. ST Engineering and Ultra Precision Control Systems (PCS) have formed a partnership to market a new commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) electronic vehicle architecture, which will be launched at the DSEI 2023 exhibition in London.

Chua Jin Kiat, head of international defence business for ST Engineering, told Janes that the partnership had developed as part of ST Engineering’s plans to grow its global presence and expand its share of the international market. He observed that the UK defence market was more open to international involvement compared with some others.

Chua said ST Engineering’s aim was to grow partnerships that combine ST Engineering and UK technology with UK manufacturing capability. He added that a presence in the UK, as a “strong NATO member”, could also offer a bridge to other NATO countries’ defence markets.

07 Sep 23. DOD opens proposal window for $48bn tech research on-ramp. Companies that are a part of the so-called IAC-MAC vehicle also support the sharing of knowledge gained from their research-and-development work with customers. The Defense Department has given industry the green light to put together and turn in proposals for the on-ramp process to join a potential $48bn technology research-and-development services contract vehicle.

Bids to become a part of the vehicle known as IAC-MAC are due by 5 p.m. Eastern time on Oct. 20, DOD said in its Tuesday notice to release the final solicitation.

A total of 28 companies hold positions on the Information Analysis Center Multiple-Award Contract, which focuses on the R&D work itself and the subsequent sharing of knowledge gained from those efforts.

For the on-ramp process: DOD plans for up to three on-ramp awards for the unrestricted pool and two selections for the small business set-aside track. IAC-MAC also has a third group of awardees that are nonprofit organizations, a pool that is not part of the on-ramp.

DOD uses the contract to acquire support for a pair of its flagship field activities in the Defense Technical Information Center and Information Analysis Center.

DTIC manages the preservation and distribution of research information related to military technology, while the IAC network provides technical analysis and data support for uniformed and civilian leadership.

06 Sep 23. BAE Systems Successfully Flight Tests Next-Generation Vehicle Management Computer for The F-35 Lightning II.

  • Flight control technology upgrade maximizes processing power for added mission capabilities and safety enhancements

BAE Systems’ next-generation vehicle management computer was successfully flight tested on the F-35 Lighting II aircraft. The test demonstrated a technology upgrade for all three F-35 variants that will increase computer performance and addresses obsolescence issues. Testing occurred at Naval Air Station Patuxent and Edwards Air Force Base.

BAE Systems’ Vehicle Management Computer (VMC) enables advanced control modes and improves mission efficiency and safety. Its distributed architecture allows the aircraft to operate reliably with enhanced mission effectiveness in demanding environments. The upgraded VMC will not only help to mitigate obsolescence but will also improve safety, maintainability, and availability of the aircraft for the U.S. military and its allies.

“The VMC provides the high integrity processing required to implement the advanced control algorithms that enable this platform’s critical missions,” said Corin Beck, director of Military Aircraft Systems for Controls and Avionics Solutions at BAE Systems. “This upgrade leveraged BAE Systems’ technology roadmap to ensure the F-35 will advance its mission management and flight control capabilities today and into the future.”

This technology upgrade incorporates a quad-core advanced processor for both a high-performance and efficient solution. The new level of computing power allows for additional aircraft capabilities while reducing pilot workload. It also adds advanced mission capabilities to the VMC such as the Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) and Auto Ground Collision Avoidance System (AGCAS).

BAE Systems has more than 40 years of experience developing and integrating flight control technology for military and commercial platforms. Work on the VMC occurs at the company’s state-of-the-art engineering and manufacturing facility in Endicott, New York.

05 Sep 23. Getac today announced it has successfully embedded LiFi technology into its rugged devices as part of a new innovation project with Signify, the global leader in lighting.

At the forefront of LiFi innovation

Getac has been at the forefront of LiFi innovation for a number of years, having previously been the first manufacturer to engineer rugged devices with integrated LiFi via the use of external dongles. Now, the company has taken this a step further by fully embedding the technology into its devices, achieving another industry-first in the process.

05 Sep 23. Hadean Signs MoU with ST Engineering to Break into New Markets with Joint Offering. Hadean, a British spatial computing company, has signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MoU) with ST Engineering, a global technology, defence and engineering group, to explore opportunities for collaboration in the public and private sectors.

The collaboration capitalises on the current commercial success and integration of ST Engineering’s VR Forces, a 3D simulation toolkit, and Hadean’s spatial computing platform, harnessing the synergy between these technologies. The joint offering will enable a large-scale virtual environment with comprehensively populated activity that modelled on real-world phenomena to simulate scenarios for incident response planning and command training, offering a complex and ultra-realistic common operating picture.

05 Sep 23.  A veteran British Army surgeon is using fish skin to heal war wounds with techniques he developed while treating soldiers during the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Dr Steve Jeffery, a burns surgeon and professor of wound study at Birmingham City University (BCU), who has worked with casualties from the Iraq War and Afghanistan, found he had to think outside the box after leaving the forces in 2020 before travelling to Armenia to help injured soldiers.

Without military support, Dr Jeffery needed to think of more innovative ways to treat wounded combatants and found that the skin of the north Atlantic cod, a by-product of the seafood business, could be used to carry out a skin graft.

He began developing the use of fish skin to heal war wounds.

Dr Jeffery’s work in Armenia has earned him well-deserved recognition, with the Armenian government acknowledging his dedication in instructing others on harnessing the potential of fish skin grafts.

He is now teaching future surgeons at Birmingham City University how to use cod skin to treat combat injuries.

The current gold standard for healing serious wounds is a human skin graft, but is it is not only expensive, but also requires refrigeration, which is impractical when operating out of a field hospital in a war zone.

To prevent any transmission of disease, skin from humans and other mammals must be intensely processed, which often removes many of the beneficial lipids that help speed the healing process.

Fish skin, meanwhile, is full of beneficial lipids, but does not need to be processed as much, nor does it require refrigeration.

Dr Jeffery said: “To get over that problem, what they’ve done previously is they’ve taken that skin graft and they’ve heavily, heavily processed it. Boiled it up to within an inch of its life.

“It turns out there’s no virus that affects fishes that can also affect humans. Because it’s been processed less, it keeps more of the goodies in there.”

Cod skin, before it is used for a graft, must still undergo a meticulous process involving descaling, reduction, freeze-drying and sterilisation.

But once carried out, this eliminates the need for refrigeration during wartime deployments, where maintaining such facilities might be impossible.

Under a microscope, cod skin appears remarkably similar to human skin. When applied as a graft, it creates an ideal environment for healing, allowing human cells to migrate and multiply effectively, accelerating the healing process.

“The patients would keep this dressing on until they return to the UK. By the time they took this dressing off, they would be healing underneath, and it would be a simple operation just to get that closed,” Dr Jeffery explained.

The broader implications of this innovation are profound. Cod skin grafts not only provide a practical solution for battlefield medicine, but also hold promise in other medical contexts.

They offer a versatile and readily available option for patients who require skin grafts due to burns, trauma or chronic wounds, particularly in resource-constrained environments.

“We have done our best to try and learn some of the lessons from experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, but I think we have a duty of care actually to try and make things progress,” Dr Jeffery added.

“I feel that it’s my duty to try and use some of the experience I have in the lessons. That is still what drives me.” (Source: forces.net)

Thales Australia has signed a university-wide Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) to increase the impact of collaboration between the two organisations. The MoU builds upon the long-standing relationship between the two.

By fostering ethical, transdisciplinary, practical, and critical skill development, the partnership will provide UTS students with cutting-edge experiences while creating a pathway for potential careers at Thales Australia, the company says.

Boeing and its Australian subsidiary Insitu Pacific has demonstrated operational applications of its autonomous search, detection and classification capabilities at EX Talisman Sabre.

The pioneering technology delivers near real-time intelligence to the warfighter. It combines Boeing’s machine learning, AI and uncrewed aircraft systems capabilities to rapidly find and classify targets, while simultaneously reducing risk and cognitive load on soldiers.

“This was the first time we were able to integrate our AI-enabled technology into an Australian Defence Force exercise, which provided an operationally-relevant terrain environment to test and demonstrate machine learning capabilities,” said Emily Hughes, director, Boeing Phantom Works Global.

“The demonstration advances our partnership with the [Australian Army’s] Robotic and Autonomous Systems Implementation & Coordination Office (RICO), and along with the recent AUKUS trial in the United Kingdom provides a clear pathway from innovation to operationalisation for the Australian Army,” she said.

During the test, two Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles were simultaneously deployed and paired with automated object detection and optimised route planning software, while effectively communicating with the ground station.

“The field demonstration by Phantom Works Global and Insitu Pacific helps us understand and evaluate the application of technology-driven solutions such as AI and machine learning and how they can be used within complex and contested environments,” said Colonel Robin Smith, director RICO, Australian Army.

Early and effective threat detection technologies have the potential to revolutionise Defence’s land combat activities said Andrew Duggan, managing director Insitu Pacific.

“The tests validated our ready-now sensor capabilities and software solutions, and the technology increases the effectiveness of uncrewed aircraft systems in modern battlespaces.”

The Helmet Display and Tracking System family (HDTS) features enhanced situational awareness capabilities including color symbology and Line-of-Sight technology for improved mission effectiveness and survivability. BrightNite TM unique night vision pilotage solution overcomes visibility limitations and enables pilots to safely and effectively fly mission helicopters in pitch dark nights and in DVE conditions.

Unmanned Aerial Systems and Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems

Skystriker fully autonomous loitering munitions (LM) locate, acquire and strike operator designated targets with an up to 10 Kg warhead installed inside the fuselage, enabling high-precision performance. Its electric propulsion generates a low acoustic signature.

Skylark 3 tactical mini UAS has up to six hours endurance and a range of 100km. With an electric engine, it enables performance of ongoing covert operations and provides real-time intelligence during the day or night to division, brigade and battalion levels. The company will also display the Skylark 3 operations tray.

Bird of Prey is an agile, compact and fully stabilized weapon system for drone platforms, designed to enhance infantry squad lethality beyond its detection and engagement range with stand-off warfare capabilities.

Counter UAS – a modular, multi-sensor and multi-mission C-UAS solution for the detection, identification, classification, tracking and defeat of drones in all relevant commercial frequency bands. Comprised of Elbit’s advanced DAiR™ multi-mission 3D tactical radar that can simultaneously detect and classify thousands of threats in the area of various sizes and velocities, SIGINT sensor, and COAPS EO payload which provides enhanced integrated aerial picture , along with high-end Electronic Attack techniques, all fully controlled  by a  unified C2 environment.

Unified Modular Airborne EW Self-protection Suites

The Spectro™ multi-spectral electro-optical payload with unique spectral signature recognition technology that can be integrated on airborne, naval or ground platforms. The lightweight playload system provides continuous target scanning capabilities for enhanced situational awareness and is designed for day-and-night and all weather extended-range surveillance.

ALL-In-SMALL™ next generation unified and modular EW self-protection suite for airborne platforms. Elbit’s EW suite comprises of EW Controller, Digital Radar Warning Receiver, IR Missile Warning System (MWS), Laser Warning System (LWS), Counter Measure Dispenser System (CMDS), DIRCM and Electronic Counter Measures Jammer, operate individually or in concert to provide maximum platform protection and aircrew survivability against advanced threats.

The mini-Music™ is a compact  and advanced DIRCM system with a powerful laser for small to medium helicopter and fixed wing aircraft ensuring protection against heat-seeking portable air defense systems (MANPADS).

SPEAR™ AECM Pod is a Self-Protection & Electronic Attack (EA) solution that is part of the SPEAR family for aircraft defense with powerful modular self-protection, EA and reconnaissance capabilities. Nano SPEAR™ expendable RF decoy designed as a countermeasure to RF-guided air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles and other threats. Overcoming gaps and system vulnerabilities, this ultra-smart decoy deceptively lures away hostile radar guided missiles.

Land EW

Tactical Integrated Mobile EW Solution (TIMES) integrated SIGINT and EW solution comprises of COMINT, ELINT, COMJAM and Command & Control systems. With communication and radar Electronic Support Measure (ESM) and Electronic Attack (EA) measures, TIMES provides an automatic, integrated situational awareness picture and allows for extensive mission planning, tasking and reporting, meeting a full range of operational support across the entire electromagnetic spectrum.

Maritime Solutions

Seagull™ Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) is a fully autonomous 12m USV and has both manned and unmanned modes. It can be easily deployed from port or mothership, operating at cruising speed for more than 4 days at sea. The Seagull USV incorporates MCM, anti-submarine warfare (ASW), martime security (MS), electronic warfare (EW), maritime domain awareness (MDA) and other innovative technology.
