10 Sep 19. Oxley Group Is Launch Signatory of The Women in Defence Charter. Oxley Group has become one of the first companies to sign the Women in Defence charter that seeks to create a more gender-balanced defence industry in the UK. The Charter is launching at the Defence and Security Equipment International Exhibition 2019 in London (DSEI) where Oxley Group is exhibiting.
Oxley is a leading designer and manufacturer of LED lighting, night vision products and electronic components that are used across worldwide defence platforms to enhance the capability of aircraft and vehicles, and safeguard personnel. The company’s product range includes EMC filters, LED indicator lamps and interconnect products; all designed for challenging military applications.
The Women in Defence Charter is an opportunity for the UK’s defence sector to make a powerful commitment to work together to build a more balanced community that is not only fairer for women but ultimately improves the defence sector and its output.
The Ministry of Defence, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Government Equalities Office have all welcomed the initiative. Organisations signing up to the Charter commit to being the very best at driving inclusion and diversity and providing fair opportunities for women to succeed.
Oxley Group is already a signatory of the Women in Aviation and Aerospace Charter which supporters gender balance and opportunities for women in that sector. More than 50% of Oxley’s 200-strong workforce are women, and the company actively promotes career opportunities with women holding key positions at every level of management within the company, from the board of directors through department management and team leaders.
Group CEO Darren Cavan explains: “Oxley Group has for decades consistently employed a high proportion of women, and from the outset has been an enthusiastic and committed supporter of gender balance initiatives. We support and value all of our workforce, but we recognise that women face challenges within the traditionally male-dominated defence and aerospace sectors, and offer particular encouragement to women entering our industry and building careers within it. Our business is on track to double its turnover within a five year period and treble it within ten years. It will be impossible to achieve those targets without initiatives like the Women in Defence charter to encourage more women to succeed within our industry”
Hannah McGarry is just one example of how women can take advantage of career opportunities within the sectors. She left school and worked as a hairdresser before joining Oxley Group six years ago to work on product assembly.
Hannah started an engineering apprenticeship three years ago and with the company’s support she has completed levels 2,3 and BTEC in electrical engineering and technical support, retaken Maths, English and ICT GCSEs and completed further computer software courses. At present she is completing her final year HNC and hopes to start her HND in September.
Hannah explains: “When I left school I could not envisage creating a career within aerospace or defence – it simply was not on my radar, and there was very little information to demonstrate the exciting opportunities for women within engineering. That has to change and I am proud to be working within Oxley Group and to be part of the process to encourage more women to take up the challenge of building careers in defence and aerospace businesses.”
10 Sep 19. SEA, the UK’s defence and security electronic system specialist, has partnered with innovative navigation provider, iXblue, to develop an autonomous anti-submarine surveillance system, SeaDrix™, for long endurance surveillance patrols. The system was launched at the DSEI exhibition in London and can be deployed as a standalone asset or as part of a wider anti-submarine warfare (ASW) surveillance system.
SeaDrix™ combines SEA’s low-profile acoustic sensor, KraitArray, with iXblue’s unmanned surface vessel, DriX, to create a system that can operate in open ocean conditions and for up to ten days un-refuelled or much longer with at-sea refuelling system.
KraitArray is a thin 20mm modular array that detects acoustic signatures from submarine contacts. Optimised for use with autonomous systems, the KraitArray consists of up to 150m sections that can be tailored to meet the objectives of a specific mission. When attached to DriX – an unmanned surface vessel with a wave piercing hull that acts as a stable towing platform thanks to its outstanding seakeeping capabilities – the technologies offer a persistent autonomous anti-submarine surveillance system. Both technologies are proven in operation.
Steve Hill, Managing Director of SEA said: “We’re delighted to have partnered with iXblue to develop our latest sophisticated autonomous anti-submarine surveillance capability, SeaDrix™. The integration of the two technologies results in a system that will allow naval forces to complete surveillance missions without the need to rely on military vessels and support teams being in the immediate area. The system was initially developed for the Ministry of Defence for deployment in October 2019 and we look forward to discussing the solution at DSEI this month.”
As well as its long endurance capabilities and rugged design, SeaDrix™ has a range of other powerful attributes. It is modular, coming with standalone mission planning, collision avoidance, sonar processing and situation awareness systems, along with comprehensive communication (including long range HF LPI) and the ability to operate with other SeaDrix™ or manned/unmanned systems.
It is also highly deployable. SeaDrix™ is 7.7m long x 3m high, meaning that it can be transported globally in an ISO container. It has its own deployment system (DDS) that can launch, recover and refuel SeaDrix™ at sea from a single point crane or davit either onboard or on a jetty. SeaDrix™ can self-deploy at up to 14 kts and multiple SeaDrix™ systems can be shipped globally to form a multi-static system as and where required.
SEA is now able to offer complete modular ASW solutions – ‘ASW in a box’ – delivering packages to suit operational needs, built from the following elements:
- Lightweight ship’s (or dockside) passive sonar system (reel-able array complete with standalone sonar processing and displays)
- Lightweight active sonar solution to enhance the passive capability above
- Autonomous ASW system (SeaDrix™)
- Lightweight UW decoy launcher system, complete with control system and interfaces with any/all of the above
- Lightweight torpedo launcher system, complete with control system and interfaces with any/all of the above
Steve Hill added: “By providing customers the ability to ‘build their own system’, we are offering improved flexibility, an entry into ASW alongside the potential to grow the capability, and ease of use for navies, which are now tackling increasingly diverse threats in a range of scenarios.”
Guillaume Eudeline, Business Development Manager at iXblue, said: “This is an exciting development. Bringing safety and efficiency to the warfighter, the unique combination of SEA’s KraitArray and our autonomous surface vessel DriX brings a new, durable anti-submarine surveillance capability to naval forces around the world.”
For more information on SEA, please visit: www.sea.co.uk. SeaDrix™ will be available to view at the DSEI exhibition on stand S8 120.
