20 Oct 17. Virideon unveils air-transportable Li-ion power cell. Virideon has developed the Virideon Intelligent Power/Energy Router (VIP/ER) to overcome restrictions imposed in 2016, which discourage transport of Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries by air. The new regulations classify Li-ion batteries as Class 9 hazardous cargo, restricting their carriage as air freight and limiting their carriage on passenger aircraft to a 30% charge. This includes standard BB-2590/U Li-ion batteries that are used in a wide range of military applications, presenting a challenge for troops deploying by air. The company claims that VIP/ER is the only Li-ion power source that complies with the latest restrictions, enabling it to be transported fully charged on passenger aircraft. (Source: IHS Jane’s)
19 Oct 17. Beeper upgrades cellular bonder. Israel’s Beeper has developed a system for combining different cellular networks to provide greater capacity and data throughput, and showcased its latest version at Association of the US Army 2017 in Washington, DC.
The IE-5000 provides a secure software-defined wide area network bonding router that can aggregate up to four separate 3G, 4G, and LTE links into a unified high-bandwidth connection, spreading transmissions across the different networks. Capacity can be further increased by connecting two IE-5000s in a daisy chain. This will provide sufficient bandwidth to enable live streaming video, data, and voice to be transmitted from a field location to a command centre over cellular networks. (Source: IHS Jane’s)
18 Oct 17. Northrop Grumman to Provide Air-to-Ground Voice and Data Capability for Airline and Civil Aviation Communications. Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE: NOC) U.K.-based air traffic management subsidiary, Park Air Systems, is providing next-generation VHF radios to Rockwell Collins for its air-to-ground voice and data link services supplied to airlines and air navigation service providers. Under the contract, Park Air will provide its latest T6 radio from the Sapphire family of products for Rockwell Collins’ growing air-to-ground voice and data link network that delivers airline and civil aviation communications worldwide. The Park Air T6 radio supports the two key data communication standards – aircraft communications addressing and reporting system, and VHF Data Link Mode 2. This will enable the communication of aeronautical operational control messages and ATC data link programmes such as Controller Pilot Data Link Communication. These data links form a critical part of the FAA’s Data Communications Programme, under the NextGen initiative, which seeks to reduce delays, improve controller and pilot efficiency, and enhance safety through an advanced data communications infrastructure.
“Our latest T6 radio builds upon many years of experience. It is now one of the most advanced products of its type in the world, with an installed base of users growing significantly each day,” said Danny Milligan, managing director, Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems.
The new T6 radio delivers industry leading performance while also being smaller and lighter than comparable products, allowing Rockwell Collins to install multiple radio channels in half the space of their current radio.
“Rockwell Collins is proactively addressing the growth in air traffic and more data being generated by modern aircraft by expanding the number of VHF ground stations in our network,” said Chris Mackey, director of Aviation Datalink Services. “These radios will help support that initiative by providing additional network capacity for our airline customers.”
The T6 radio is designed to meet stringent environmental demands which, as an added benefit, reduces life-cycle operating costs. Significantly lower power consumption not only cuts electricity usage but also allows the use of l
