23 Feb 17. PIDS+ and Flare-Up for Dutch F-16s. The Dutch F-16’s current Pylon Integrated Dispenser System, Universal (PIDSU) with MIL-STD-1760 capability will be upgraded to PIDS+ with Flare-Up. The system detects incoming missiles and dispenses flares to decoy the missile. The system counters heat-seeking missiles via six sensors and one processor. Three sensors are installed in both the left hand and right hand pylon so they provide almost full spherical coverage, and the processor is installed in the right hand pylon. The AAR-60(V)2 provides the threat information to the Terma ALQ-213 Electronic Warfare Management System in the cockpit. The ALQ-213 selects the most efficient dispense sequence which it executes from the Flare-Up installation – also in the PIDS+ pylon. (Source: Shephard)
23 Feb 17. DoD Announces the Launch of “Code.mil,” an Experiment in Open Source. The Department of Defense (DoD) announced the launch of Code.mil, an open source initiative that allows software developers around the world to collaborate on unclassified code written by federal employees in support of DoD projects. DoD is working with GitHub, an open source platform, to experiment with fostering more collaboration between private sector software developers and federal employees on software projects built within the DoD. The Code.mil URL redirects users to an online repository that will house code written for a range of projects across DoD for individuals to review and make suggested changes. This is a direct avenue for the department to tap into a worldwide community of developers to collectively speed up and strengthen the software development process. In exchange, DoD program code hosted on GitHub will be open and available for individuals to reuse and repurpose for personal and public projects. (Source: US DoD)
