14 Sep 05. Thales UK has developed a new state of the art Stabilised Indirect Panoramic Sight (SIPS). SIPS is a combined Commander’s and Gunner’s sighting system with a 360o panoramic view. It features dual-axis stabilised indirect viewing/aiming sensors, comprising both Day and Thermal cameras, each of incorporates an Eye-Safe Laser Range Finder, which is designed to operate in conjunction with the platform’s fire control system for accurate target ranging and to improve first-round hit probability.

07 Sep 05. The first dual seat flight of VSI’s Night Vision Cueing and Display (NVCD) was completed earlier this month in a demonstration at the Naval Air Warfare Center, China Lake, Calif. The NVCD provides the daytime advantages of VSI’s highly successful Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS) for night missions. For this demonstration, an F/A-18F Super Hornet was equipped with JHMCS in both cockpits.and the pilot’s and weapons systems officer’s independent lines of sight were integrated into the aircraft weapons and sensors. The JHMCS with the NVCD modules allowed both pilots an unprecedented wide field of view night visual scene and the ability to cue the Super Hornet’s weapons/sensors via the JHMCS interface.

15 Sep 05. GKN has successfully developed and applied a new ‘sector leading’ third generation of technology for its “GI” tripod plunging joint product family. This joint type can be used on the gearbox side of sideshafts to smoothly transmit engine power and accommodate length and angle changes in sideshafts that are a result of steering and suspension movements, the company says. 13 Sep 05. Barco has been selected by EADS Air and Naval Defence, Ulm, Germany, to develop a sophisticated, custom-made visualization solution for its OMADA console concept. The solution provided combines two advanced 19” auxiliary displays with a 46” large area display that is horizontally integrated into the console. The leading edge console design allows a team of 4 operators to manage complex military operations on a single screen.

20 Sep 05. Nexor announces the release of Nexor Vanguard, a tactical messaging gateway which conforms to the NATO STANAG 4406 Annex E Standard. For the first time in the UK, Nexor Vanguard showed STANAG 4406 Annex E in action at the Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) in June 2005 on behalf of UK MoD and NATO. The first implementation of the system is due this month.
Recent times have seen a significant increase in ‘out of area’ military operations. The majority of these operations are of a tactical nature, characterised by a requirement for mobility, coupled with the lack of a strategic communications infrastructure. As such, many armed forces are now considering tactical messaging as the next step in the development of their communications systems. STANAG 4406 Annex E is a draft standard that describes a tactical MMHS protocol to be used for the interconnection of MMHS over networks with reduced throughput capacity. The Annex identifies a set of interoperability protocols that cover all of the identified tactical MMHS interfaces. It includes both application level messaging protocols and the related lower layer protocols that need to
