26 Nov 12. Reaction Engines Tests Hypersonic Air-Breather Rocket. Seeing is believing, as the saying goes. That’s certainly what Reaction Engines hopes as it moves deeper into advanced tests of a novel pre-cooler that it believes could revolutionize air-breathing access to space. Designed to chill engine inlet air by more than 1,150C (2,100F) in less than one hundredth of a second, the pre-cooler is one of the key enabling technologies at the heart of the Sabre (synergetic air-breathing rocket engine). The hybrid propulsion system is designed for either atmospheric transport at speeds around Mach 5 or as the air-breathing element of a single-stage-to-orbit spaceplane dubbed Skylon. 04 Dec 12. PEI-Genesis, Inc., one of the world’s fastest assemblers of precision connectors and power supplies, has been named by Amphenol Aerospace, a global leader in interconnect systems, as value-added assembler for their micro-miniature 2M connectors. This series provides more power throughout and consistent coupling by incorporating more electrical connections in compact form factor. Available in shell sizes from 5 to 23, the new high-density 2M series weighs 72% less and is 52% smaller than standard MIL-DTL-38999 connectors. The 2M series of connectors are intermateable and intermountable with existing micro-miniature high-density connectors typically used in aerospace and defense applications. The lightweight 2M Series maximizes SWAP (size, weight and power) in a variety of high-reliability, harsh environments.

30 Nov 12. IFS™, the global enterprise applications company, has released a new module to help companies in the Aerospace & Defense (A&D) market manage the complex timing and legal needs associated with product export compliance. The extension manages compliance with ITAR, EAR and UK Export Controls. As part of the IFS Applications suite of enterprise resource planning software, the Export Control extension is designed to give users peace of mind that their exports comply with trade regulations within their markets. IFS Export Control is a complete customizable export control system which allows suppliers with multi-site operations in different geographies to create a fully integrated database of export products and regulations. By entering the parameters of the exporter’s product developments, current licenses and the relevant trade regulations, exporters of military or dual-use items can have complete control over supply chain compliance according to their own needs. Instead of the costly and time-consuming process of individually checking each order against current licenses and regulations, Export Control automatically flags up potential breaches of export regulations and a series of alerts warns exporters of non-compliance issues.

05 Dec 12. The Space Tracking and Surveillance System (STSS) demonstration satellites, built by a Northrop Grumman and Raytheon team for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), collected data during an Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense test June 26 that will be used to create a concept of operations for future space-borne, operational missile defense sensors. Designated FTM-18, the combined Aegis Launch on Remote and Engage on Remote exercise involved the successful intercept of a medium-range target by the newest variant of MDA’s Standard Missile-3 interceptor, the SM-3 1B. The pair of STSS demonstration satellites collected data in infrared wave bands similar to those planned for MDA’s proposed Precision Tracking Space System (PTSS), said David Bloodgood, STSS program manager for Northrop Grumman’s Aerospace Systems sector in Redondo Beach, Calif.

04 Dec 12. e2v aerospace and defense, Inc. announced that qualification has been completed and production units have been shipped on the first device in the Maxim Life Extension Program,
