12 Nov 12. Raytheon Company has achieved two significant milestones on the Cobra Judy Replacement program, meeting critical performance requirements to advance ongoing system integration. For the first time, the company demonstrated the full-power radiation capability with the high sensitivity CJR shipboard X- and S-band active phased-array radars. In addition, both the X-band and S-band radars successfully acquired and tracked satellites under the control of the CJR common radar suite controller. Both critical firsts were realized at sea during testing onboard the USNS Howard O. Lorenzen (T-AGM 25). The milestones are the latest in a series of achievements for this true dual-band, active phased-array radar suite. In late 2011, Raytheon completed the shipboard installation of CJR mission equipment at Kiewit Offshore Services (KOS), Corpus Christi, Texas, ahead of plan. Shipboard testing of the X-band and S-band arrays with the common radar suite controller commenced directly thereafter and continued as part of the preparation for these critical operational exercises. The program’s success can be attributed to the collaborative working relationship among Raytheon, Northrop Grumman and the Navy, all executing to a robust incremental development, integration and testing strategy as they advance toward delivery in 2013.

GE Intelligent Platforms announced the bCOM6-P1100 Rugged Type 6 COM Express Module, a board designed for deployment in challenging or harsh commercial environments such as mining, forestry, construction, oil & gas, food & beverage, networking, industrial automation control and power & energy. The company has incorporated its extensive experience in developing high performance rugged solutions for military applications into this new product. The bCOM6-P1100, which expands GE’s COM Express portfolio by adding a Freescale™ PowerPC™ processor, also takes advantage of GE’s expertise in the optimization of thermal performance. GE specifically selected on-board components for their reliability in demanding conditions, and, unlike solutions designed for benign environments, processor and memory are soldered to the board for maximum resistance to shock and vibration. Extended mechanical construction protects the module, which is designed for optional conformal coating for even greater resistance to moisture, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes.

Lockheed Martin has submitted its final contract proposal to build Space Fence, an advanced ground-based radar system that will improve the way the U.S. Air Force identifies and tracks orbital objects. Space Fence will provide much-needed enhanced space situational awareness capabilities for the Air Force and allow the service to decommission the aging U.S.-based Air Force Space Surveillance System, originally installed in 1961. The Air Force plans to begin construction at its first Space Fence site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the fall of 2013 to meet the program’s 2017 initial operational capability goal. The contract value is estimated at $1.9 billion over a seven-year period of performance. Using powerful, new ground-based S-band radar technology, Space Fence will enhance the way the U.S. detects, tracks, measures and catalogs orbiting objects and space debris with improved accuracy, better timeliness and increased surveillance coverage. Earlier this year, Lockheed Martin demonstrated its prototype Space Fence radar proving it could already detect resident space objects.
