Northrop Grumman Corporation successfully completed a series of ground and flight tests demonstrating its SmartNode Pod linked with the U.S. Army’s High Antenna for Radio Communications (HARC) system can enhance information communication connectivity between ground, air and remote network nodes. During the tests, Northrop Grumman’s aircraft-mounted SmartNode Pod enabled HARC to connect with other ground radio networks to form a unified network that operated across different radio systems, including currently deployed legacy systems and radios based on new waveforms. The SmartNode Pod is based on Northrop Grumman’s highly successful Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) technology that exchanges real-time information among disparate military and commercial radios and data link systems, a critical capability for deployed warfighters. It is designed for use on a variety of aircraft and provides critical range extension and gateway capability controlled by the lowest level commanders. The HARC system – developed by the Army Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. – is an innovative approach with six antennas on an aerostat that connect to ground radios via fiber optical link. HARC floats above an area where line-of-sight communications are hindered by mountainous terrain or urban canyons.
10 Sep 12. Boeing and the U.S. Navy on Sept. 6 successfully flight tested a new mission computer that will expand the performance of the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler. The new Type 4 Advanced Mission Computer (AMC) increases computing power and accelerates image and mission processing functions. Those advances will support new systems being incorporated onto the aircraft, including a Distributed Targeting System, Infrared Search and Track, and a new high-definition touch-screen display. The new AMC was tested on a Navy F/A-18F during a 90-minute flight at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, Calif., verifying that it met critical safety and system requirements. Additional testing is planned. Boeing will deliver to the Navy the first Super Hornets and Growlers with the Type 4 AMC in 2014. General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems is Boeing’s principal supplier for development of the AMC.

Northrop Grumman Corporation unveiled ReadyBlue™, a mobile app with the capability to give flight line personnel, military leaders and depot operations staff secure, real-time insight into aircraft readiness, fleet readiness and mission capability rates. It has the capability to connect maintenance personnel on the flight line and the depot shop floor to an entire enterprise of fleet knowledge. Northrop Grumman developed ReadyBlue™ with its product development partner, 3Pillar Global, a Fairfax, Va.-based small business.
13 Sep 12. Harris Corporation received Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Certification for its Falcon III® AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack radio operating SRW v1.01.1. As a JTRS-certified product, the AN/PRC-117G is considered compliant with the standards set forth by the JPEO JTRS and proven to be compatible with the Department of Defense network objectives. JTRS Certification is part of an emerging process designed to enable competition while facilitating the development of tactical networks that are low-risk, secure and interoperable. To become JTRS certified, a tactical device must fulfill seven separate requirements, including testing or certifications for waveform conformance and Joint Interoperability Test Center interoperability, National Security Agency information security, programmable cryptography, National Telecommunications and Information Administration spectrum compliance and Software Communications Architecture compliance.
