13 Aug 12. Rubicon Technology, Inc. announced a ground-breaking project, dubbed Large-Area Net-shape Crystal Extraction (LANCE), developed to produce large-area sapphire windows of optical quality for military sensing applications. The project is supported by a grant from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), with a total value of $4.7m over three years. Existing methods used to produce sapphire windows do not meet all the demands of military applications. Rubicon Technology has developed an entirely new growth platform specifically to produce very large polished sapphire infrared (IR) windows for the Air Force Research Laboratory. Production will be scaled to meet the current and future requirements of the Air Force, beginning with intermediate sizes and progressing to windows as large as 36 x 18 x 0.8 inches. These sapphire windows will meet a variety of needs in both government and private sector applications. Sapphire is a desirable material for military and other high-performance applications due to its hardness and strength, transparency in the visible and IR spectrum, thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, abrasion resistance, high melting point and chemical inertness. As a result, it is ideally suited for IR windows in extreme environments where material durability is just as important as optical clarity. (Source: Yahoo!/BUSINESS WIRE)

13 Aug 12. Smiths Detection announced a partnership with Mirion Technologies that will allow it to offer a full radiation detection and identification product line to U.S. customers. Its technology suite will now meet all the needs of multiple security markets, including: military/defense, homeland security, ports and borders, aviation and emergency response. RadSeeker is a next-generation radionuclide identifier with enhanced capability to distinguish radiological and nuclear threats and eliminate the background “false positives” produced by naturally occurring radiation or other legitimate everyday radiological materials. 15 Aug 12. HYPRES, Inc., the Digital Superconductor Company™, announced the spinoff of +n (PlusN, LLC), a new company focused on developing intelligent capacity management solutions for data communications. +n retains the team members who were influential in developing the core technology and is backed by HYPRES lead investors Franklin “Pitch” Johnson of Asset Management Corp, Chris Brody of Vantage Venture Partners and John Levy, chairman of the board at HYPRES.
“We are pleased to announce the +n spinoff as it represents an exciting culmination of the development of this unique capability born out of our advanced RF technology”
With the continued proliferation of worldwide mobile communications, operators are facing critical spectrum availability and capacity issues with their current infrastructure. In response to this problem the team at HYPRES created, and now +n will further develop and productize, innovative signal processing techniques based on pioneering algorithms and software for all commonly used processor platforms that enable mobile operators to significantly increase the mobile data capacity in their networks without deploying additional infrastructure or acquiring additional spectrum.
“We are pleased to announce the +n spinoff as it represents an exciting
culmination of the development of this unique capability born out of our
advanced RF technology,” said Richard Hitt, CEO at HYPRES. “At HYPRES we are always developing innovative solutions for industry’s most challenging performance issues and technology gaps. Creating +n is the first step in providing industry with an exciting new solution that addresses maybe the most critical challenge facing wireless operators. Spinning out this spectrum management capability that is not dependent on our superconductor techno
