The American Helicopter Society (AHS) International awarded its annual recognition for helicopter technology improvement to Eurocopter’s team that developed its X3 hybrid demonstrator aircraft, which Eurocopter announced will be presented to both civil and military customers during a United States tour this summer. Presented at AHS’ 68th Annual Forum in Fort Worth, Texas, the society’s prestigious Howard Hughes award acknowledged Eurocopter’s successful validation of its helicopter hybrid concept, which uses two turboshaft engines to power a main rotor along with two propellers installed on the tip of short-span fixed wings. The result is an advanced, cost effective, VTOL transportation system offering the speed of a turboprop-powered aircraft and the full flight capabilities of a helicopter.
02 May 12. Cassidian, the defence and security division of EADS, has successfully completed all certification measurements of its MSSR 2000 I (MSSR = Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar) secondary radar by the AIMS Program Office of the US Department of Defense.
Concluding extensive tests and documentations since 2008, the certification guarantees the interoperability and reliable operation of MSSR 2000 I according to the future “Mode 5” standard and all other Modes (1, 2, 3/A, C, 4, S). The new “Mode 5” standardized process of distinguishing hostile from friendly aircraft (Identification-Friend-or-Foe, IFF) will be obligatory in all NATO Armed Forces from 2014. Therefore, the certification is a prerequisite for delivery of IFF equipment in the future.

The US Army is planning to test Microsoft’s motion-tracking game technology as a potential solution for installation into the conventional helicopter’s cockpits to perform body-tracking and movement recognition during combat operations. According to the US Army’s solicitation for the small-business innovation research (SBIR) programme, the service seeks low-cost intelligent systems where pilots could direct helicopters with head movements and crew members can track objects outlined by the pilot. The army’s futuristic intelligent cockpits are expected to feature virtual controls and displays to help aircrew automatically identify targets present outside the cockpit. It can also report on damage to the cockpit and help in assessing the physical condition of the pilot, such as consciousness, fatigue, tunnelling and injury based on their movements. Microsoft’s Kinect system, developed for the Xbox 360 console, provides three basic capabilities in advanced gesture recognition, facial recognition and voice recognition under almost any ambient light conditions.
