06 Mar 2025. UK Ministry of Defence and industry collaboration breaks new ground at the Digital Manufacturing Centre. The Digital Manufacturing Centre (DMC), an industry-leading production facility and additive manufacturing (AM) innovation hub, hosted the latest UK MOD Strategic Command’s Additive Manufacturing innovation event, on 5 March 2025. This MOD/industry collaborative event was held at DMC’s state-of-the-art AM production facility, located at the world-renowned Silverstone Park. The event was also supported by the Buckinghamshire Enterprise Zone.
Project TAMPA is a UK Strategic Command Defence Support sponsored project that is exploring the advantages of integrating the very latest AM (3D-printing) technology “from factory to foxhole”. From the outset, DMC has been intimately involved with Project TAMPA and is working in close partnership with the MOD and key defence players such as NP Aerospace, Babcock, Thales and RBSL, to support the development and delivery of this high-technology manufacturing capability, into the defence supply chain. Fully aligned with the MOD’s Land Industrial Strategy (LIS) and the Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS), TAMPA is a spearhead initiative that is driving forward proactive collaboration with industry to rapidly find and integrate the very latest manufacturing technologies.
TAMPA Spiral 1 validated the ability of AM to produce non-safety critical NATO Stock Number (NSN) parts to the appropriate quality and Spiral 2 is expanding the requirement to include safety critical parts and demonstrate the ability for AM to add value to the part production process. DMC is also working in partnership with NP Aerospace to investigate the additional AM benefits possible by using Direct Energy Deposition (DED) methods to create large metal structural parts leveraging the benefits of AM to reduce lead times, reliance on tooling and cost. The advantages of AM in the defence supply chain are numerous and include: weight saving; cost reduction; speed and agility; innovation in design, obsolescence management, inventory management and potentially, forward deployed additive manufacturing support.

At the heart of the JetSys-2010 is the NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX SoM with 16 GB and the NVIDIA JetPack software development kit (SDK). Northrop Grumman continues to deliver strong performance across test and production on the B-21 Raider, with an LRIP Lot 2 award late last year signaling further confidence in the program’s technical performance and progress. In partnership with the U.S. Air Force, Northrop Grumman prioritized adaptability, affordability and producibility from program inception, with a focus on long-term successful outcomes and delivering the U.S. Air Force a strategic deterrent to project peace through strength.
“Northrop Grumman’s decision to build the test jets on the actual production line is one example of the program strategy that’s paying dividends. We entered Production Lot 2 in Q4 of 2024, with a B-21 workforce that’s come down the learning curve earlier in production. Not only have we learned how to build B-21, we’re learning how to build B-21 better and at scale – optimizing several areas of the build for long term efficiency and affordability,” said Tom Jones, corporate vice president and president, Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems.
Digital Ecosystem Burns Down Risk, Drives Efficiency
Early in the design phase, the B-21 digital ecosystem enabled engineers to conduct agile testing on production hardware and software, first in integration labs and later in a flying test bed. Before the B-21 ever took to the sky, the flying test bed completed more than 200 test sorties totaling more than 1,000 flight hours, testing production hardware, software and sensors in a dynamic environment and enabling teams to tackle discovery well in advance.
Through the digital ecosystem, the Northrop Grumman team has realized a 50% reduction in time to certify software in the lab. Similarly, flight test teams are validating aircraft performance in real time as opposed to days of post-mission processing and analysis. This speed and efficiency powers a robust flight test cadence.

Factory of the Future, Flightline of the Future
Northrop Grumman’s investment – upward of $2bn in infrastructure and development effort – in its digital ecosystem provides the entire B-21 team enterprise-wide access and integration to a single source of truth in the design and build processes. Where the digital environment meets the production floor, this digital technology expedites configuration management, facilitating communication between technicians and engineers during the build, in some areas already reducing manufacturing hours by roughly a third.
In addition to the benefits of the digital ecosystem in manufacturing, Northrop Grumman’s expanded implementation of augmented reality, advanced robotics and artificial intelligence technologies are further enabling technicians planeside to drive efficiency and quality throughout the build. Northrop Grumman has leveraged commercially available technologies within a secure environment to form the highly sophisticated manufacturing facilities that are scaling into production on B-21.
The tools deployed in B-21 manufacturing today are paving the way for operational sustainment. The B-21 was designed from inception to be a daily flyer, with minimal maintenance required between missions. Decades of experience operating stealth aircraft systems, combined with the Highly Immersive Virtual Environment – or HIVE, that enables engineers to visualize how sustainment tasks will be performed by future maintainers – all informed the B-21’s design to drive affordability and support operational needs. Already, the Combined Test Force (CTF) has demonstrated ability to conduct multiple test flights in a week, a positive early indicator for B-21 as a daily flyer.
Sustainable Success

Innovative digital technologies and advanced manufacturing processes have resulted in the B-21 coming in below the government’s affordability targets, all while successfully scaling into production and achieving technical and performance requirements. More than a bomber, the B-21 is adaptable for the future threat, able to execute its mission independently or as a force multiplier operating within a family of systems advantaging offboard sensors and platforms.
With the balance of production and test still on the horizon, Northrop Grumman is seeing less discovery and risk realization that historically drives cost due to change, driving confidence the B-21 Raider will continue delivering strong cost and technical performance. 04 Mar 25. Poland to strengthen security with new AI Implementation Centre. The centre’s remit will encompass coordinating rapid AI project deployment. Poland has announced the creation of the AI Implementation Centre within its Cyberspace Defence Forces.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, along with Ministry of National Defence State secretary Cezary Tomczyk, briefed on the role of AI in enhancing the Polish Armed Forces.
Cezary Tomczyk said: “Artificial intelligence is the future, but the future begins now – it is happening here and now. We have to be in the vanguard, we have to be at the forefront when it comes to artificial intelligence and implementing the most important solutions.
“When we talk about companies dealing with artificial intelligence in Poland and around the world, in almost every one of them, among the leading programmers you can find representatives of our country – Poles. We want them to be able to develop their skills here and contribute to building modern technologies in our country.”
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has outlined a long-term strategy for AI development that extends to 2039, with emphasis on the next five years as pivotal for establishing Poland’s stance and utilisation of AI.
The Artificial Intelligence Implementation Center is seen as an integral part of this strategy. The centre aims to fortify Polish security by advancing and integrating AI technologies across operational domains of the armed forces. These include intelligence, reconnaissance, autonomous combat systems, decision-making support, and logistics. The centre’s remit will encompass coordinating rapid AI project deployment and ensuring that commercial products are suitable for military use through collaboration with industry and academia. A report by GlobalData titled ‘Poland Defense Market 2024-2029’ projects an increase in Poland’s defence acquisition spending, from $21.5bn in 2025 to $26.3bn by 2028, accumulating to $120bn from 2025-29. Aitech, a leading provider of rugged embedded systems for use in military aerospace and space platforms, today announced it provided the avionics computer system in support of the Intuitive Machines IM-2 mission to the Moon’s south pole region. The mission is sending its Nova-C class lunar lander, Athena, to test technologies and collect data to enable future exploration. IM-2 is set to demonstrate lunar mobility, resource prospecting, and analysis of volatile substances from subsurface materials—a key component for establishing a sustainable infrastructure on the lunar surface and in space.
Intuitive Machines aims to provide the diverse space services required to commercialize the Solar System, starting with the Moon. The Houston-based company used Aitech’s space-rated computing system to help facilitate critical data processing for Intuitive Machines’ lunar lander. Athena incorporates enhancements including the integration of lidar technology and advanced autonomous landing through machine learning and artificial intelligence enabled through Aitech’s space-rated computing. The IM-2 mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, helping lay the foundation for human missions and a sustainable human presence on the lunar surface.
“With trns of miles flown in space successfully, Aitech has supported the most demanding space applications,” said Ralph Grundler, space director of Aitech. “We are proud to take part in the IM-2 mission to support its objectives, yet another proof point for Aitech’s rugged space system solutions that provide reliable performance for the most unforgiving environments.”
The space-rated system developed by Aitech includes its SP0-S space-rated single board computer, S740 radiation tolerant communications PMC board, and S730, a rugged space-rated SpaceWire card. Aitech provided the complete conduction-cooled hardware for the Nova-C avionics system for use as both a payload controller and image data processor. Intuitive Machines utilized this dual SP0-S setup to respectively run both VxWorks RTOS and Linux to execute its time-critical software while processing video data streams down to a NAND flash storage module. This unique dual SBC system leverages RS-422, SpaceWire cameras, and NAND flash storage in an all-in-one space-rated avionics system.

A key objective of IM-2 is the deployment of NASA’s TRIDENT Drill and MSolo mass spectrometer to probe up to 1 meter beneath the lunar surface, demonstrating the technology needed to detect life-sustaining volatiles like water and CO2. Additionally, the mission introduces innovative mobility capabilities with Intuitive Machines’ Micro Nova Hopper, named Grace, enabling up to 2 kilometers of traversal from the lander, capture detailed surface imagery and crater exploration.
Supporting the overall IM-2 mission deliverables, Aitech’s space-rated system includes the SP0-S, a radiation-tolerant 3U CompactPCI SBC developed to handle high-performance processing and enhanced memory storage in orbit. In addition, Aitech’s SP0-S architecture supports up to seven additional cards on the CompactPCI backplane providing clock, arbitration, and interrupt servicing, including additional SP0-S SBCs as peripheral processors, as implemented on Athena.
The system for IM-2 also features Aitech’s S740 rad tolerant communications conduction-cooled PCI mezzanine card (PMC) designed with 16 input and 16 output differential channels of RS-422 and utilizes the onboard FPGA logic to interface to external spacecraft sensors and devices for the mission. To reduce bottlenecks as information is collected via detailed surface imaging, the S740 is designed with a protected onboard PCI Bus DMA controller for input and output data packet buffering. Rounding out the computing requirements, Aitech’s rad tolerant S730 SpaceWire PMC Card offers three SpaceWire ports with initiator and target capability and has provisions to add on RS422 serial interfaces and 32 GPIOs for complete system communication.

The first ever Challenge Fund launched under the AI Security Institute today (Wednesday 5 March) will focus on areas critical to the UK’s national security such as AI misuse, bolstering public confidence in the technology and leading to greater AI adoption across the economy as a central pillar of the government’s Plan for Change.
Researchers covering a range of AI security threats, such as protecting critical systems from failure and preventing AI misuse, can now apply for fresh funding to strengthen UK defences, as part of a £5 m programme. As AI capabilities advance, so do the risks, making investment in robust security research more urgent than ever. By tackling these risks head on, the government will also boost public trust in AI – helping to remove barriers for those looking to adopt the technology to drive forward growth, innovation, and new opportunities in all areas of the economy.
Led by the UK’s AI Security Institute, the Challenge Fund will award grants of up to £200,000 per project to address pressing, open questions in AI security and safety – with researchers being called on to put their proposals forward.
This initiative reinforces the Institute’s renewed security focus, building a strong evidence base to understand and mitigate the most serious threats posed by advanced AI systems. It will also ensure the UK’s critical infrastructure is protected as the government looks to unlock AI’s full potential and boost adoption across the economy – ramping up productivity and ensuring more innovative AI is developed on UK shores as part of the Plan for Change.

AI is at the heart of our Plan for Change – driving economic growth, creating jobs, and transforming public services for people across the country. But to unlock its full potential, we must ensure AI systems are secure, resilient, and trusted – with safety baked in from the start.
This fund supports world-class research to tackle the toughest safety and security challenges in AI, protecting critical infrastructure and removing barriers to adoption. By addressing these challenges head-on, we’re laying the foundations for AI to boost productivity, strengthen public services and power a decade of national renewal.
The fund will focus on supporting research tackling 4 critical AI security and safety challenges. As AI integrates into financial markets, healthcare and energy grids, failures or misuse could cause systemic disruptions and security risks – as such, the research will help boost confidence in AI and make sure our economy is better protected.
Ensuring human oversight is another priority, as AI takes on complex decision-making roles. The fund will support research into robust controls which will allow humans to reliably monitor and intervene to prevent any emerging risks, even as AI systems operate autonomously. This funding will support research to strengthen protections and reduce these risks.
AI Security Institute Chair Ian Hogarth said: “This fund directly supports researchers seeking to understand and address the most urgent AI risks – whether that’s ensuring AI systems remain resilient against misuse, ensuring human oversight over autonomous systems or strengthening our society against emerging threats.”
Making sure AI systems are aligned and operate with human oversight are 2 of the key open questions in technical AI safety. By funding high-impact research across these priority areas, we’re building the evidence base needed to develop a robust understanding of, and real-world solutions for, the most urgent security risks AI presents.
By advancing AI security, the fund will bolster public confidence, drive long-term economic growth, and cement the UK’s leadership in responsible AI development. This aligns with the government’s Plan for Change, accelerating AI adoption to enhance productivity and improve public services nationwide.
The AI Security Institute will provide grants to researchers and non-profit organisations worldwide with clear, tangible security solutions. Proposals will be assessed on their potential impact, with priority given to innovations that would not be realised without this support.

04 Mar 25. An affordable voice and data interoperability solution could transform today’s tanker platforms. The KC-135 Stratotanker has an undeniable legacy in the history of the United States military, with nearly seven decades of providing mid-air refueling, cargo and medical aid transport. Tankers like the KC-135, as well as other currently fielded tankers, operate in non-combat environments due to limitations in their onboard situational awareness and communications capabilities. However, an affordable yet robust voice and data interoperability system could significantly expand the role today’s tankers play in the battlespace.
Northrop Grumman, in collaboration with the Utah Air National Guard and Air Mobility Command, demonstrated a data interoperability system that could rapidly increase the KC-135 platform’s survivability through enhanced situational awareness for the tanker. This system can also allow for airborne data translation amongst various warfighting platforms, providing a common operating picture. The system translates and distributes imagery, voice, and tactical data from disparate elements in the battlespace, allowing all warfighters in the area to sense and make sense of their environment. This not only makes the tanker more effective but also allows it to relay information to an extended network on the connected battlefield, so more resources have the critical information they need to make key decisions.
The system shown at the demonstration included elements of the new NG InSight™ product line and combined them with Northrop Grumman’s legacy end-to-end advanced communications and networking capabilities. NG InSight™ provides next-gen connectivity and secure communications, seamlessly linking defense assets across air, land, space and sea. This advanced system allows joint and coalition forces to operate as a unified force, enabling warfighters to make fast, informed decisions.?
The demonstration was a pathfinder and risk reduction exercise to evaluate viable combat capabilities focused on improving air tanker platforms’ ability to meet the demands of facing near-peer threats.?The customizable and portable solution can be easily added or removed as needed from most tanker platforms and would transform the aircraft into a force multiplier in the airspace.

03 Mar 25. Collins Aerospace EPACS Power and Thermal Management System Ready for Aircraft Integration. Technology will provide increased cooling to enable enhanced capabilities on F-35 and future defense and commercial aircraft
Collins Aerospace, an RTX (NYSE: RTX) business, has successfully tested a fully functional demonstrator of its next-generation power and thermal management system (PTMS). Targeted as a replacement to the F-35’s current PTMS, Collins’ Enhanced Power and Cooling System (EPACS) will provide more than double the platform’s current cooling capacity—enough to support planned upgrades for the life of the aircraft. This latest milestone follows Collins’ announcement in 2024 that EPACS had successfully demonstrated 80 kilowatts of cooling capacity.
