28 Jul 04. Advanced Micro Devices will on Wednesday open a new front in its battle with Intel by launching a line of low-cost microprocessors that undercut comparable products from its larger rival. The new processors, branded Sempron, will compete directly with Intel’s successful Celeron line, which is found mainly in desktop personal computers priced below $600. AMD will announce that Sempron-based PCs will be available in the fast-growing Chinese market withing the next few days. Manufacturers including Hewlett-Packard, Sharp and Acer are commited to launching Sempron computers in the US in time for the important Christmas holiday selling season. The launch marks the latest phase of AMD’s campaign to make inroads into Intel’s dominance of the market for PC microprocessors. The Texas-based company has this year increased its share at the top end of the PC market with its Athlon 64 processors and scored a big success in the corporate server market with its Opteron line. The PC market overall is expected to grow by about 15 per cent this year, with less expensive machines showing the fastest rates of growth. (Source: FT)
