07 Jul 15. Indian Army cancels rifle, carbine tenders. The Indian Army scrapped its December 2011 tender for 66,000 multi-calibre assault rifles for around INR48.48m (USD764m) on 15 June, official sources said.
Instead, it has opted for the Excalibur 5.56×45 mm assault rifle, which is being developed by the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), to meet the army’s long-postponed requirement for 220,000 rifles. The Excalibur is an upgraded variant of the DRDO’s 5.56×45 mm Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) assault rifle, rejected by the army in 2010 – 15 years after it was inducted into service – for being ‘operationally inadequate.’ The DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune, which was responsible for designing the INSAS rifle, has dubbed the Excalibur prototypes the Modified INSAS Rifle (MIR). 07 Jul 15. Tests of Extended Range Missiles for S-400 almost finished. Official tests of extended range missiles for advanced S-400 Triumf air defense systems are in the final stage, the head of the Russian Air Force’s anti-aircraft missile troops said Saturday.
“The official tests of this missile are in the final stage. I think that in the near future they will be successfully completed,” Maj. Gen. Sergey Babakov told the Russian News Service radio.
The S-400 Triumf (SA-21 Growler) is a Russia’s next-generation anti-aircraft weapon system, carrying three different types of missiles capable of destroying aerial targets at short-to-extremely long range. Russia is currently undergoing a $325bn rearmament program for a 70-percent modernization in its military’s weaponry by 2020. (Source: MPI – Hawk Information/ Sputnik News)

04 Jul 15. KBM unveils decoy-resistant Verba MANPADS. Key Points:
* New multispectral seeker enables clearer, faster discrimination between targets and decoys
* Enhancements extend the missile’s engagement envelope by a factor of 2.5
Russia’s Konstruktorskoye Byuro Mashinostroyeniya (KBM) unveiled its next-generation 9K333 Verba (Willow) man-portable air defence system (MANPADS) at the Army-2015 International Military-Technical Forum in Kubinka. KBM designer General Valeriy Mikhaylovics Kashin said the Verba system significantly improves upon the accuracy and performance of the earlier 9K338 Igla-S (SA-24/Grouse) MANPADS, primarily through the integration of a new multispectral optical seeker, which uses three sensors – ultraviolet, near-infrared, and mid-infrared – as opposed to the dual-waveband infrared used in the Igla-S system. Kashin said the multispectral sensor enables faster discrimination between appropriate targets and decoys, and decreases the chance of disruption from infrared countermeasures, including high-power flares and lasers.
The Verba’s kinematic kill range remains practically the same as the Igla-S (slant range up to 6,000m (19,680ft) and altitudes of up to 3,500 m) but KBM said the engagement envelope has been extended by a factor of 2.5, and protection from high-power flares improved by a factor of 10. The company says that these improvements optimise the use of the missile’s energy consumption with lower quantities of missiles now required to defeat an aerial target and deliver a general increase in performance by a factor of 1.5 to 2. A typical 9K333 Verba MANPADS system comprises a 9M336 missile with the new multispectral optical seeker, developed by LOMO of St Petersburg, and a new warhead developed by the RFNC- VNIIEF facility in Sarov; a 9P521 launcher; a Maugli-2M (1PN97M) infrared imaging sight (also developed by LOMO); and 1L229V ground-based IFF interrogator. The systems are integrated and produced by the Degtyarev Plant in Korov.
