29 Jan 15. Russia selects new assault rifles. The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has selected two assault rifles manufactured by Kalashnikov Concern as new standard issue firearms for the Russian Ratnik soldier modernisation programme. “We have already made a deal and selected assault rifles from Izhmash. It won in cost to effectiveness terms. The quality is also acceptable for us,” Deputy Minister of Defence Yuriy Borisov stated on Russian radio on 24 January. Borisov stated that two assault rifles manufactured by Kalashnikov Concern were selected by the Armed Forces: the AK-12, chambered in 5.45×39 mm, and the 7.62×39 mm AK-103-4. “We also increase the number of ordered Ratnik systems from 50,000 to 70,000”, Borisov added. 05 Feb 15. FN Herstal delivers SCAR-H precision rifles to Lithuanian Army. FN Herstal has delivered FN special operations forces combat assault rifle-heavy (SCAR-H) precision rifles to the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The semi-automatic rifles have been delivered as part of a €2.7m contract secured by the company in December 2013 and will be used by the Lithuanian Land Force. Lithuanian Defence Minister Juozas Olekas said: “Our focus in the modernisation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces is the soldier, while we aim at providing them properly with modern equipment as we seek to ensure that soldiers’ tasks are completed. The semi-automatic rifles use Schmidt & Bender rifle scopes and are expected to increase combat capacity of the land force. A modified version of the SCAR-H battle rifle, it features a 20in heavy barrel and an improved two-stage trigger module, and is designed for use as a sniper support rifle. The 7.62mm rifle is fitted with mechanical precision sights with a range of up to 600m, as well as an extended top rail that can accept the in-line assembly of night and day sights. A length-adjustable folding buttstock and height-adjustable soft cheek rest are included for user comfort. Originally developed for the US Special Operations Command, FN SCAR-H rifles are also used by Belgium, Chile, Croatia, France, Germany, Georgia, Kenya, Malaysia. (Source: army-technology.com)
