21 Dec 17. Colt shows ADF Spec M5 enhanced carbine. Legendary weapons manufacturer Colt is at D&S 2017 to support the Royal Thai Army, a long term traditional customer for the company’s traditional M4A1 carbine and M16A4 service rifles.
Colt also has a sustainment relationship with the Royal Thai Air Force where it is supplying M4 conversion kits for the Air Force’s old M16s. It has also supplied weapons to the Royal Thai Navy and the Royal Thai Police. The Malyasian armed forces are also a traditional Colt customer in the region.
“There is a backlog of demand in Thailand which we are now servicing,” said Lt Col. (Ret) Matthew Fehmel, director of international sales at Colt.
“We are now introducing the M5 enhanced carbine into the region,” added Fehmel. “The carbine derives from an original specification developed for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Special Operations Command (SOCOM).”
Features of the M5 include a redesigned lower receiver, ambidextrous controls, low profile gas block in a carbine length gas system and a free float modular rail system. The free float rail is designed to take any handling pressure away from the barrel.
According to Fehmel, Colt has an exclusive Foreign Military Sale (FMS) contract with the US government which could be applicable for sales to countries such as Indonesia.

21 Dec 17. S&T aims high for Next Gen ROKA weapon. South Korean firearms developer S&T Motiv, formerly Daewoo Precision Industries, is seeking to expand its footprint in the Asia Pacific, particularly in the Southeast Asia region where it has enjoyed some recent successes.
S&T Motiv has delivered around 400 K7 9mm calibre silenced submachine guns to Indonesia. The K7 is a derivative of the company’s K1A 5.56mm assault rifle but chambered to fire 9x19mm ammunition. It is fitted with a large multi-baffle sound suppressor unit that is permanently secured over a short perforated barrel. The company said this reduces the noise signature of the weapon to 111 decibels.
Also being showcased at Defence and Security Thailand are the latest variants of its K2 5.56mm assault rifle which is in service with the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA).
The K2C1 is being produced in short (310mm) and long barrelled (465mm) models and features a quad-rail type MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail barrel shroud which replaces the polymer grip found on the original K2. The long barrelled K2C1 has an unloaded weight of 3.68kg, while the short barrelled model weighs 3.3kg. In contrast, the original K2 assault rifle weighs 3.37kg unloaded.
The company has also developed the K2 Carbine which is already in service with South Korea’s special forces. The weapon weighs 3.3kg unloaded.
S&T Motiv is aiming to secure a contract to build the next generation service rifle for the ROKA, which is expected to enter production around 2018 and introduced into service by 2021. (Source: AMR)
21 Dec 17. Russian bombers to be armed with new Kh-50 theatre-level cruise missile. Russian sources in early December disclosed the designation ‘Kh-50’ for new Russian airborne theatre-level (substrategic) cruise missile. Purchases of production Kh-50 missiles are planned under Russia’s State Armament Programme for 2018–27 (GPV-2027), the sources added.
Developed by Raduga Design Bureau of Dubna within the Kh-SD (Sredney Dalnosti, medium-range) programme, the Kh-50 is expected to be a subsonic cruise missile utilising the guidance system of the strategic Kh-101 missile but with a smaller, low-observable airframe, similar to the US AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Stand-off Missile (JASSM). Research and development work on the Kh-SD began in early 1990s, but was subsequently suspended for a number of years. Designed to fit in the weapon bays of the Tupolev Tu-22M3 th
