• Blue Origin will start testing its BE-4 engine ‘soon’
• The engine could power future US national security launches
Blue Origin will ‘soon’ start testing its BE-4 rocket engine that could serve as the first stage booster for future US Air Force (USAF) launches.
Blue Origin CEO Bob Smith made the remark on 5 October at the first meeting of the US National Space Council in Chantilly, Virginia. While he didn’t provide more context, Smith’s comment on testing is significant as it is unclear whether the company resumed BE-4 testing after a mishap earlier this year. Blue Origin said in a 14 May Twitter post that it lost a set of powerpack test hardware on one of its BE-4 test stands on 13 May. (Source: IHS Jane’s)

The Defender is a 1,000 mm by 100 mm vertically mobile countermeasure system that defeats torpedoes by luring it either upwards or downwards. The system transmits an acoustic signal to seduce torpedoes in a 360-degree direction horizontally, and can ascend and descend at a rate of about 1 m per second. (Source: IHS Jane’s)
