28 Sep 17. BAE Systems progresses Project Centurion with Brimstone milestone. BAE Systems has completed a major milestone in its efforts to roll out the Project Centurion configuration for the United Kingdom’s Eurofighter Typhoon force by the end of 2018. Speaking to Jane’s on 28 September, Eurofighter Delivery Director Andy Flynn said the summer flight test campaign of the MBDA Brimstone air-to-surface missile had been successfully concluded three days previously, resulting in the low-yield missile now being safe for carriage on the Typhoon.
“Over the past 18 months we have done a number of Storm Shadow [cruise missile], Meteor [beyond visual range air-to-air missile], and Brimstone releases in the UK. There have been nine Brimstone jettisons and nine firings from 13 July to 25 September,” Flynn said, adding: “We have now completed the aerodynamic integration and the stores release and jettison – this means it is now safe to fly and fire through the required performance envelope of the aircraft. 28 Sep 17. USAF issues RFI for directed energy weapons. The US Air Force’s (USAF) Strategic Development Planning and Experimentation (SDPE) office has issued a request for information (RFI) to industry partners for directed energy weapons that could be used in an experimentation campaign. The RFI seeks input on the industry capability to provide a directed energy weapons system for targeting group 1 and group 2 unmanned aircraft systems (UASs).
The USAF will use directed energy technology to counter UASs as part of an upcoming experimentation demonstration.
The testing is in line with the Air Force Directed Energy Weapons Flight Plan signed in May.
USAF chief scientist Dr Greg Zacharias said: “We identified directed energy as a game-changing technology area in our airforce strategy and pressed forward with developing a Flight Plan to define what we needed to do to get from the laboratory to operational capability.
“Experimentation and prototyping are critical tools to help make this happen.”
The directed energy weapons such as high-energy lasers and high-power microwaves can provide the ability to precisely engage targets of interest with little to no collateral impacts, while they can also provide protection to USAF assets, the USAF stated.
USAF experimentation campaign programme manager Dr Michael Jirjis said: “Forward base defence was one of the used cases for directed energy outlined in the Flight Plan.
“We’re looking to assess capabilities and maturity of directed energy technologies available today and in the near-term.”
The SDPE office is expected to conduct the experimentation campaign next year. (Source: airforce-technology.com)

28 Sep 17. Escribano offers add-on SAL section for 70mm artillery rockets. Spanish engineering house Escribano is developing a new, add-on semi-active laser terminal guidance section for integration with government-furnished equipment (GFE) surface-launched, fin-stabilised, unguided 70mm artillery rockets. Escribano’s Semi-Active Laser Kit (SALK) section comprises two main component modules – an electro-optic spot detection (EOSD) main sensor, and a guidance and control section (GCS). The EOSD module comprises an objective for a laser spot detection (OLSD) component: the optomechanical set (weighing about 300 grams), containing the optical lens for detection of the laser spot, and a laser spot processor unit (LSPU) that contains a segmented quadrant position-sensing detector and the signal-processing electronics.
