17 Nov 16. Expal launches new “one-stop shop” concept for mortar systems. Spanish explosives manufacturer Expal has launched a “one-stop shop” concept for mortar systems, in its bid to expand its presence in the market. Speaking at a live-fire product demonstration in Spain on 15 November, area manager Javier Rodrigez Villa highlighted the company’s vertically integrated approach to working with customers, which starts with identification of system needs and requirements, transitioning through to manufacturing, integration, the provision of training, and integrated logistics support, before offering demilitarisation of explosive systems. The company breaks down the chain of operations for mortar systems to create a systems approach, integrating its Shepherd-mil unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), Techfire command-and-control (C2) and battle management system (BMS), as well as Expal Integrated Mortar System (EIMOS) and conventional dismounted mortar systems. 17 Nov 16. Russia fires new cruise missile at Syrian rebels. Russia has tested a supersonic cruise missile that was designed for use against ships as a land-attack weapon in Syria — the latest indication that the war zone is being used as a trial ground for military hardware. At least two P-800 Onyx missiles were fired from Bastion-P coastal defence launchers, one of them thought to be situated 19 miles inland from the Mediterranean. The Russian defence ministry published satellite images said to show a rebel warehouse storing arms and vehicles being destroyed by the missiles on Tuesday. Konstantin Sivkov, a Russian specialist in military affairs, told a state news agency: “This was the first time the Bastion complex, equipped with Onyx missiles, has been used against targets on the ground. I assume that it was fired not so much in order to destroy some important enemy position but to check, under combat conditions, the possibility of using this weapon for land attack.”IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly said that, based on its analysis, one of the Bastion-P launchers seen in the defence ministry footage was deployed at a Syrian early-warning radar site 19 miles inland from the coastal city of Baniyas, in Tartus province. The strikes were part of a wider Russian offensive that included jets flying from the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier and Kalibr cruise missiles being fired from the Admiral Grigorovich frigate. The Syrian conflict has proved an important showcase for Russian aircraft, ships and arms that are sold abroad.
